With T-mobile USA's promise of 21mbps hsdpa next year and the rumored release of the HD2 for T-mobile USA I've gotten to thinking. The HD2 is currently listed as being capable of 7.2 mbps hsdpa, which I realize T-mobile USA doesn't even have yet. So is hsdpa speed a software or hardware issue? And assuming it is software does anyone have any thoughts on how likely it is there will be an update, official or xda. Sorry if this is a dumb question, it just seems dumb to buy an amazing phone like the HD2 and not get the best download speeds around.
Mobile Operators usually limit the HSDPA speeds. On my HD2 in my location I experience some 1.7Mbs via HSDPA, while WiFi provides some 6-7MBs.
The 7.2 MBps is a hardware limit for the HD2, though. Can't get it any faster with software updates.
I'm getting approx 1.25 mbps with 3G here (VF-CZ).

Ok so I was looking online at the HTC site and see its says:
Network HSPA/WCDMA:
* Europe: 2100 MHz
* US:1700/2100 MHz
* Up to 7.2 Mbps down-link (HSDPA) and 2 Mbps up-link (HSUPA) speeds
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
* 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
I honestly do not know what everything means but I know that ATT's 3G runs off of 850 and 1900....am I correct?
If I am then the ATT 3G should work correct? I am trying to figure this all out because I may pick a G1 up tomorrow with my little brothers account seeing that I am with ATT as of now in order to get the Touch Pro.
THANKS
No it will not work on att 3g
well i guess its not down to if I want a phone with no 3G?
Think its worth not having 3G?
No dude, get a phone with 3G. Honestly when I'm stuck in an EDGE area with my G1 it's too slow for me to do much more then IM and stuff, I almost always switch to my Sprint rev. a pda when out of 3G. Also, more and more services will come out that use 3G and you don't wanna get stuck behind the curve.

I've had my G1 for two days now and I am in an edge area (no 3G). I'm sure it is alot slower than 3G, but my phone is fully capable of doing anything that it is suspose to. Loading a webpage takes less than 10 seconds. Loading apps from the Market have taken me less than a minute. I'd say this phone is very capable if only on Edge.

I am also in an edge area (3G starts a few miles away). I cannot stream podcasts, but tbh the only time I find myself doing that is when I'm stuck at the airport. Websites load up quick enough...
Right now 3G coverage is only absolutely required if you are tethering or streaming media. I have wifi for my off time at home so no biggie. Now I know there will be some apps that will require that kind of bandwidth, but hopefully tmo will have expanded 3g to my area by then.
Hello,
I was just wondering if
HSDPA/WCDMA: Europe: 2100 MHz / US:1700/2100 MHz
means the G1 has both the frequencies for Europe and for the US
or it is sold in 2 Versions.
Does anybody know?
Thanks

The G1 is dual-band UMTS; there's only one version.
A tip though, NEVER use frequencies to refer to UMTS bands; they're confusing and ambiguous. Always use the numbered bands.
AT&T uses bands II and V, T-Mobile USA uses band IV, and Europe uses band I.
The G1 supports bands I and IV.
All AT&T 3G phones support II and V, some support band I in addition.
Here's a good article listing the UMTS bands:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands
There are NO phones to my knowledge which support BOTH bands IV and II or V.
What that means is that you can follow a simple rule, at least for the time being:
If it supports T-Mobile USA 3G, it doesn't support AT&T 3G.
If it supports AT&T 3G, it doesn't support T-Mobile USA 3G.

Anyone on T-mobile USA with the x10 getting hspa+ speeds?
im in chicago and im getting about 1mbps
O_O last time I checked xperia x10 doesn't have support for hspa+ but I could be wrong. And I haven't actually checked yet but I seem to be having the same speed, I'll check later and post the results
I get between 4-6 depending where I am
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
from the SE official site, the spec. said it is UMTS/HSPA phone which is upto 7.2 Mbps (correct me if i am wrong) HSPA+ is upto 14.4 Mbps which is double....
I dont think our X10 is HSPA+ phone.
I get about 4Mbps down near millennium park with t-mobile's new rollout. Average speed is about 1.5Mbps down throughout the city.

Even if the phone does not support HSPA+, having the network upgraded greatly improves the UTMS/HSPA speeds.

This is correct. HSPA+ is just HSDPA and HSUPA, but with a faster theoretical cap.

in san francisco i get between 7-14 and late night i've gotten up to 21.
Considering HSPA+ is still only a 3g network, should phones that had 3g capability be able to take advantage of HSPA+? I mean when T-Mobile upgraded their old 3g to HSDPA/HSUPA, every phone got the boost.
And why do phones that are cable of utilizing HSPA+ need a sim card that supports HSPA+

I work Tmo Retail. All 3g Tmo phones can utilize the HSPA+ network. The difference with the newer MT4G and G2 is that they can handle higher speeds depending on your area.
For instance, the Samsung Vibrant can handle up to 7.2 mbps while the G2 can do 14.4. In Los Angeles, I get around 4-5 megs on HSPA+ so both phones would be about the same speeds. However, I've heard in other areas in the country, some people have reached 8-12 mbps with HSPA+. In that case, the higher speed capabilities would make a difference.
Hope that answers your question!

So you're saying that once the average speeds for HSPA+ are say 8mbps that my phone will be capped at 7.2 mbps, but if the average speeds are currently under 7.2 that I would be completely capable of having the same speeds as a phone equipped for HSPA+?
Does anyone know why the hd2 has hsdpa support (hspa+ downloads) before T-Mobile's hspa 4g campaign? It can be considered as half of a 4g device since it only supports 4g downloads but not 4g uploads.
Sent from my HD2 using XDA App
the htc hd2 supports up to 7.2Mbps. But the real 4G t-mobile is coming out is 40+
HSDPA and HSPA+ are 2 different things.
TmoUS HD2 does support HSDPA (when you see the H in the taskbar) but does not support HSPA+
HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) is actually more like 3G+ since I do get insane download speeds on it, and it has the actual capacity to get 14.4 MBPS down (although I don't know anyone who gets that)
HSPA+ (Evolved High-Speed Packet Access) can get up to 42 MBPS down and our phones do not support this.
I need to knew wat means this Sentence
T-Mobile, America's First Nationwide 4G Network Sent by Samsung Mobile
It about HTC HD2 iam in Egypt it means i cant use this device ???
My Best site www.IslamHouse.com
what it means is that tmobile have a nationwide "4G" network setup in the USA, which is bollocks, its not 4G, or at least by the criteria of it. its more like a 3.5G or a Pre-4G it uses HSPA+ which is based on the 3G network but is quite a bit faster
LTE advance and WiMax2 are the only two ideas defined as true 4G, and neither of those is on the market yet.
anyhow, it means bugger all for your HD2 as that only supports HSPA, depending which version of the HD2 you have (which network its setup for) assuming you have had your HD2 working there it will still work there with the "4G" but you wont be able to get the HSPA+ speeds.
