Has anyone noticed any long term disadvantages to overclocking the Wizard? Does the battery life permanently decrease? What speeds are you running yours at, and how long have you been doing it? Have you noticed anything at all which indicates it's not good for the hardware?
Cheers
reply
i believe that it's safe to overclock the mda...just set it at an acceptable rate (264mhz for me) and make sure not to run the battery all the way down...if you overclock the settings too high the device will freeze and reset (this is a fail safe procedure it goes through), so there is no need to worry...also don't overclock the settings too low as the phone becomes disfunctional when too low (about less than 132mhz for me)...the screen flickers because it's not being refreshed quick enough (my guess)...hope this helps...
I would set it to 240. I have done before, i'm just wondering if it's a bad idea leaving it permanently set to that level?
Cheers
yea you should be fine at that speed, but if you want you can overclock it higher if it will let you...just make sure that the phone is stable when using it...like i said in my earlier post my device is oc at 264mhz
Cool, thanks for your replies. How long have you had yours overclocked for? Do you use Smartskey?
Cheers
My self i ownly use it when need the extra speed, only with some games and wmv video files. I think it definitely lowers battery life and i would have worries about overclocking all the time and the long term effect it has on the processor (not so important if you only keep your wizard for a year and then change with a new contract - what i do new device once a year!) I found good speed gains with the registry wizard - http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=39725
have not found overclocking produces that much extra speed.

Mine is also set at 264 24/7. Battery still lasts me all day. Been doing it since the oc program was found which I guess has been a couple of months.
Don't forget, you're wizard is only overclocked when it is active (i.e. not in standby mode). When your wizard goes into standby, it automatically goes back to the default 180mhz. Only when you bring it out of standby does it overclock again (assuming you're running it with smartskey with the option of overclocking on wakeup)
i'm using smartkey to constantly run at 264mhz...i have been doing this for a month now...like i said there is not really any problems with the batt unless you run it down totally...there was a post about this in the overclocking thread...the process is set low so that the phone will have a longer batt life...this was also stated in the overclocking thread...theoretically there is more wear if you overclock it since you are making the processor work harder, so use it at your own risk! if you want to be on the safe side then use smartkey and the overclocking prog in the same directory...then use total commander's note pad (while the ini file is highlighted) and change the value lower when you don't want it to constantly run at 264mhz or whatever speed you want to overclock or underclock at...just use it when needed, but i overclock mine constant 264mhz with great results combined with tweaks2k2, registry wizard, and of course the tmobile custom rom ...internet is a blast...just wish i could get it to run like the IE in a pc
anyways hope this helps out a bit further...
activesync
your activesync will hang allot if you overclock, I have noticed this.
DOnt know why.
For some reason i stumbled onto something, im sure its been mentioned b4 but when running Wisbar advance with a Windows vista skin done by xcillion, i am able to overclock my cingular 8125 to 288mhz at a stable rate with no problems at all, can run warcraft 2 full speed with over 50 units battling it out on screen, almost doubles browsing speed and i can run all the emulators including SNES at full speed with sound. when i dont have wisbar advance running i cant go past 240mhz clocking speed. I wonder has anyone else noticed this or gone higher than 288 without a freeze. Also, my battery life runs steady for a full day of browsing the internet talking on mobile messanger and listening to music at half volume for a full day.

hey sonic, where did you get your copy of warcraft 2 for windows mobile ?
I've never heard of warcraft for Windows mobile, how does it run on a 240 MHz overclock?
I got it from the Wargus engine. i can email you the files if need be, i dont want to jeprodize this sites reputation. The game last time i checked was free though...
Actually I'm not sure if it's the overclocking issue or not but ...
For couple of weeks now my Wizard's red led is on all the time, not like it is when your battery is very low but about half of this brightness. I'm not really worried about that, it doesn't change much but it may be connected with overclocking (it was 240 for about a month).
Another thing - once I had sth like 110% speed of every tone played, either a phone call or an incoming message.
It doesn't really matter to me since it's still working fine but it may mean that overclocking isn't that safe as we might think.
TroLoo
Hello,
I bought the prophet 200 (xda neo) hoping it would turn out to be a decent device that provides speed as well as endurance in terms of cpu and battery. Unfortunately was badly dissapointed in both factors.
I installed the newest DOPOD rom.
Here are some apps that I installed:
Pocket Plus
Pocket diary
TCPM
Skype
Resco Explorer
Opera
Agile messenger
spb backup
news break
my problems with the device is that I have the feeling that it operates way too slow. This is the first time I own a PDA so it might be my preception that is deluding me.
a couple of examples: If I scroll down the contact list it goes rather slow and laggy. It takes quite a few seconds if I start up an application like opera, IE or skype. Sometimes the start menue pops down only very slow.
Resco File explorer starts slow and takes a while to perform an operation.
Using Pocket Informant is almost impossible beacuse it takes 6 Seconds or so until the app is started and the navigation through the app itself is very slow. (if i want to add a contact it takes 4 seconds until the forms are loaded)
Same applies to Fusion Agenda.
Talking with skype almost does not work at all. When I make a call i cannot adjust the volume anymore or it reacts like 20 seconds later and flips out on me. I cannot end a call because the device almost crashes and it takes 10 seconds to get it back. The other person can barely hear me.
There is another thing regarding battery drainage.
Let me give you an example, If I have just finished charing the device and it displays a battery charge of 100% I unplug it and 1 minute later it goes down by 1% to 99 - an additional minute and the battery meter displays 98. By the end of the day i seem to have a charge of maybe 40% while using the device for maybe 1 hour intensly and the rest just phone standby with maybe 2 calls of 2 min avrg length.
On top i noticed that the left side of the device gets a littel warm when I am using the device extensively or charging it. Is that also normal?
Whats the deal with my device? i dont know a whole lot about pda's. Is that a normal power consumption?
How can I measure if my device performs well in terms of CPU speed because I have the feeling it also runs slow.
please help

As for the battery issue, not sure what to suggest.
after I overlocked my XDA neo (with JAMin WWE ROM) to 252 mhz, I found it runs all programs very smoothly. I can open media player, and read novels at the same time, switch between all the running programs is very smooth and fast. compared with my another PDA (intel Xscal 400 MHZ CPU), I could not see big difference.
Times you mention are quite realistic. My Qtek S200 performs at about the same speed (program startup times) and I can live with it. To improve a little, try to use some task manager to see if you have cpu-intensive programs or today plugins running. also, close programs instead of minimizing them (use magic button, gs pocket magic or else).
Concerning battery, mine seem to last longer. Do you have a dual sim adapter? I found out it was draining my battery very fast also in flight mode.
If you do not need voice dial, there is a thread in these forums about uninstalling it and magically getting a fast keyboard switch (no more 6 s waiting for changing from phonepad to handwriting recognition).
Hope that helps.
Poket plus really hog the CPU. especially the today plug in. I had the same isues. just enable only 1 tab, delete all the other plug in tab for pocket plus. use the meter that you need only. I only use storage meter and it sppeds up quite significant. either that or use resco's today plug in if memory meter is all you need.
As with almost all Pocket PCs out there, I bet you are suffering from the well-known-not-too-mentioned bug of Windows Mobile 5 (inherited from WM3) where the notification database starts accumulating duplicate entries and in a few days, you'll end up having hundreds of duplicate entries, rendering the device almost useless.
You need something like Memaid or similar app to get rid of the duplicate entries. (There are some freewares out there).
Also, make sure you move all your data (and install most apps) into SD RAM, not the internal RAM. You'll get better performance when you keep your PDA above 10-13 megs of program memory.
Just a few pointers...
Best regards,
Rayan

Hi, Can you point me to the post you are mentioning? I have been searching high and low for it but I cannot find it.
I have a Dopod 818 Pro and have Cyberon Voice Commander installed. I uninstalled it yet the 6s delay in switching input modes seems to be still there. I have tried to remove all DLLs and traces of it from the registry, yet have been unsuccessful in removing the 6s delay.
Can you please help?
Thanks
I haven't used the dopod rom but with the newest imate rom (from May06 I think?), the SIP delay is gone. Also, it seems that several of your 3rd party apps are resource hogs. The jamin can function quite well if not trying to run too many today plugins.
Hi thank you for the reply
Actually, I won't like to flash an imate rom to my device as I don't want to take any chances with it. It cost me a lot of money and I want to play it as much by the book as I can hehe..
Other than that, is there a way? I know that this delay has always been there, even when the device was brand new and was running no 3rd party today plugins. It's great that imate managed to solve the issue. Maybe Dopod will get on the ball and do something about it too. I hope so.
Help Before I make a mistake.
I Just picked up this 6800 2 weeks ago and im still within my 30 days.
In that 2 weeks I have went from the original 2.17, Beta 3.16, No2Chem5047, Dcd 2.2.6 back to No2Chem5048.
Basicaly I love the phone. I Love the GPS and RevA. I personaly don't use gps because I have a older PPC that I run TomTom6 on. The Keyboard is sweet and the Wifi Is Huge for me.
The problem is the Ram is giving me a huge headache. A clean rom boots for me at 20mb which is ok. I love the software the Touch has and once I start loading it up to make it feel more like a Touch the ram gets crushed. I have tried every Tweak in the book to shut down startup items to shutting down services. I have made compromise with the touch software I can and cannot load because of memory. Basicaly Im sick and tired of this and its giving me a huge headache. Its like I can't make it look the way I want without sacrificing the very limmited memory.
Maybe its me but after a while at 13mb free or lower with nothing running it starts to feel a little slugish.
What it comes down to the size of the phone doesnt bug me . The keyboard is a real thing I worry about but I use the touch keyboard on my mogul for 1 handed texting sometimes so im already use to it. The wifi is great but im feeling I would take more memory at this point I dont want to get rid of my mogul but if I dont I feel I may throw it out the window if I get one more memory error.
i have a htc kaiser (tytn ii) and at&t tilt (branded kaiser) and the sprint mogul. kaisers has 128mb of ram while mogul has 64mb. my mogul runs faster, smoother, and less problematic than the other two. at some point i felt like i needed more ram on the kaiser as well, but when i saw how the mogul ran, i even switched to sprint. so i too hope you wont make the mistake of exchanging it!
I don't know lol. Maybe its just the fact that I dont know these new devices very well and how they are suppose to run. Before this phone I was on several palm treos for 4 + years. The only thing I can compare it to is my old ipaq 2200 and that thing is 5 times faster then my mogul. Maybe its just WM6 is a memory hog.
I guess it feels like its a little sluggish when its running 13 mb or lower. If there was something I could overclock with that might help me a little thro the rough parts.
What I cant Figure out is out of 45.2mb of program memory and usaly 60% or more is gone. where is it all goin lol? I have alot of the services shut down and only my startkey is loaded at startup . I can sit there and watch everything running and the math just doesnt add up to 25+ of ram. Maybe i just not understanding how these things run.
I thought a touch would be the quick fix that i needed since it had 128mb. I dont know I guess ill think about it for a few more days or whatever
I've seen ROM's on the Upgrading forum that have 30 MB free at startup. That's huge, and it makes me wonder why the more popular (no2chem, dcd) ROM's don't have that much free.
Don't do it!
I did just what the OP is thinking about and what a mistake. Although the Touch runs very well, the lack of a physical keyboard is too frustrating for words. Also, the touchscreen is nowhere near as responsive or accurate as the iPhone or iPod Touch. Beware!
For me, the most important feature of the Mogul is the wifi. If it wasn't for that, I'd have a Touch.
Are you using the Oxios memory program? That helps a ton! And you have to be diligent about actually closing out programs and not just minimizing it. Sure it takes a bit of diligence, but having wifi is well worth the effort IMHO.
I dont know if you are, but if you are running the HTC Home today screen plugin, try your phone without that. It slowed down my phone so much, just by having that one plugin on my today screen. I have replaced it with UltimateLaunch and now my phone seems to run twice as fast
I went to the 2.3 DCD rom yesterday. Every other rom had a ton of memory leaks and connection problems.
Tip:Try Spb mobile shell and Spb pocket plus. They do just about everything you can hope for out of HTC mods and they use almost no memory, dont lag up the phone, make your Mogul very touch friendly and look a ton cleaner then anything I have seen anyone make so far. You can make your phone so you almost never have to use the menue ever. I have everything on my desktop and the stuff I dont use constantly is one touch away no stylus needed.
I have tried every cab on the web that I could find and any and all roms I can get my hands on. The only rom that runs well is the latest DCD with Spb mods on it. I will never go back to the HTC stuff untill they can get there **** together. ATM there software sucks HUDGE! Honestly the HTC stuff always stinks imo and always has but thats just my 2 cents.
I feel your pain man... was in the same boat as you... I just got my 6800 a few weeks ago and it really took a lot of playing around with software combinations to find a set that works well...
The wifi and keyboard are really really useful the more I use this thing and I know I wouldn't be able to do without them so I pained into trying to work around this memory problem.
The main thing I found that eats the hell out of memory is today plugins. I had good luck with SPB Mobile Shell but recently just went back to plain jane today options with weatherpanel which seems to be very solid memory wise. That combo'd with Quickmenu for quick-launch ability, I can usually stay around 20mb at all times. Today plugins also lag the heck out of switching between apps... like going into a text message from a notification... no flashy today plugins make a much faster and cleaner operating system.
Very disappointed to see all these memory problems but I don't think it's the device... it's the software..... os and apps.
Well after a few more days of thinking about it and going to best buy to try out the touch. I relized how much I would miss a nice keyboard . Yea the ram was nice but it felt just as sluggish as mogul . Im seriously thinking a small overclock would help both of these devices. Its just to bad theres nothing out there.
I tried the Dcd 2.3.1 the memory was great best rom I seen yet for memory . After a day of useage out of the new dcd I noticed the rom was alot more sluggish of all the wm6.1 roms I tried. Today I went to No2Chem5049 and all I installed was pocket plus and mobile shell.
I had enough of messing around with roms for a while. I am running at 14-15mb free and 17.8 bootup. It feels somewhat responsive and im just gonna sit back and enjoy my phone for once
blahhhh
blahhh
I wanted to switch to the touch too. After the new DCD rom I have about 6 more mb than I had before the other ones. I used to have to reboot it about twice a day. Now I could probably do it every other day just to keep things fresh. Right now I'm cooking some roms and testing out NexVision roms to see what one fits me better. Just testing out different things to get it to where I like it.
Is the phone perfect? No but it seems to get better every month. I think it just frustation for me when I want to trade it because it takes forever to get the things you want it. With the UC or cooking your roms, it takes a lot less time to install the programs. I don't notice the ram too much unless I'm down really low. I don't use wifi much and keyboard I'm' fine with either that or touchpal. I would rather have those things than not have them. It doesn't take too long to reset to get my ram back and it is holding better than ever.
With my phone at the Today screen, and no apps launched my WM 6.1 is running at 60-65%....
Is there any way to reduce it other than getting a new ROM? I'm VERY leary about upgrading the ROM, basically because I'm a serious newb with all this flashing and SPL stuff....
Thanks!
*coughs* *shuffles feet*
Bump....
Cheers, all.
The percentages you're talking about are mem usage - not CPU usage
65% isn't that problematic.
Thank for the info!!
it got as high as 84% yesterday, and overnight sucked my battery life with nothing running...is there anything I can do to keep this low?
Thanks!
Are you sure you don't have anything running? When i close all running programs on my NIKI and return to homescreen, i have about 55%, with Win. mobile 6.1.
What have you tried..? Tried a soft or even better, a hard reset of your device?
That's a fair question, because I actually have to soft reset every once in a while after using various apps on my phone. I make sure that there's nothing running in the task manager as well.
Right now it's at about 70%....and that is after a soft reset.
Now, it's not modded (I have a Neon [Bell Canada HTC Touch Dual], so there's no ROM for it yet). Once there's a finished ROM for it, with all of the "muck" out of it, it's probably going to be a little better.
But I question if there's anybody out here who gets the original amount of memory back after closing some apps..?
When I start a lot of apps and close them again, the used mem percentage is always higher than before (I think WM doesn't unload some libraries 'til your memory gets full, because it doesn't hurt to keep them loaded and saves processor cycles)
I've found that as well. If I use enough apps, I have to turn my phone off and back on - eventually It gets over 80% (sometimes It's gone up to 90% with no apps running!)
I have the same problem. The memory kept going up in WM6.1. Any solution to this?
Hello there,
Yes, I'm well aware of the stickied thread that has most of the answers I was looking for, but there are still a few questions in mind:
1) Is it slow on your Blackstone or does it work just as fine as Windows Mobile in terms of speed (opening, closing applications, making a phone call, etc.)
2) I Googled about Android on WinMo HTC phones before I came here and I came across a few posts that said sound isn't that great and text messaging doesn't work most of the time. Is that true?
3) If you can do me the biggest favor and list the MAJOR issues (downsides) of running Android on the HTC phones that came with WinMo?
I am buying an HTC HD in a couple of days and I was really eager to try out the Android OS. I have had bad experiences with Windows Mobile before but I am pretty sure with XDA Developers on my side, everything will be as easy as water.
Thank you very much for taking the time to read this, guys.
PS: Is the HTC Magic worth it? Is it or the HD better?
All
1) It works quite fast - for example i use to draw with skecher and listen some music^^
at same time, applications starts pretty well (but some times crash just after start, but not often!)
2) messeging works fine (as sms gmail gtalk), no questions to browser speed as well
3) camera not working
PS i'v bought HD few weeks ago only because Android works on it
Thank you very much for your quick and thorough reply, Mr. htcrum.
I guess the camera isn't much of an issue as I'm not the type of people who keep taking pictures. That's in addition to the fact that I have a digital camera that I can just use.
By the way, is switching between Android and Windows Mobile fast or does it take a long time? How long does it take to be precise?
Oh and is battery life when on Android way worse than on Windows Mobile or do you not notice a difference?
switching from android to windows takes 1-2 minutes (actualy i never check this)
booting android is mostly similar as windows
about battery - it discharges in about 10-12 hours with slight usage, and I really don't know how it is in windows - i use it for android booting only
and i forgot to say about another issue - usb mass storage might not work

What do you really mean about " about 10-12 hours with slight usage"? I am just interested because I would really like to test some android rom's but if the battery life is so bad I can wait little longer and stick on WinMo.
Just for comparison my average battery live with WinMo 6.1 without touchflo is from 3 to 5 days depending on how much I use GPS and surf around internet.
