Apologies for the odd title, it's hard to convey the nature of my question without a long explanation.
I have an Alpine right now. My main peeve with it is the fact that screen & button lock gets turned off as soon as I receive a message or call, allowing me to open any number of programs and connections whilst the device is still sat in my pocket - a real PITA when I have to have it on silent when I'm in uni.
I should be getting a universal in a week or so.
I noticed that the universal can be closed in such a way that the screen is not exposed at all. What I was wondering was if it is practical to keep it in one's pocket like this (yeah I have big pockets), preventing any buttons/icons being pressed when I receive a message/call when it is in my pocket. Can one still normally receive messages and calls when it is like that, and still be able to answer them conveniently? Flipping the screen over to answer a call doesn't seem like a big deal to me.
Bottom line, is there anything I should know about using the phone like this?
With the screen closed you can still answer calls.
If you want to check who is ringing you can lift the screen to check the number and then just close the screen again and answer the call with the answer button on the spine of the Universal.
Another advantage of this is that the screen doesn't gunk up as the exterior of the Universal is pressed against your ear, not the screen as happens with the Alpine.
I think, to answer your question, it is possible that you once the device is "unlocked" active, or in sleep mode, pressing the "call" button that is external on the hinge, can activate and make telephone calls in advertantly. though it is unusual.
in relation to pocket, it just fits into a top shirt pocket. in baggy shorts, with its weight, it tends to bang around a bit. in jeans and pants, its a bit big.
overall, as a phone it is functional for receiving calls, if you just receive all. opening the screen to see is a bit of a pain after a while. Setting ring tones for specific callers helps to ease this. bluetooth headsets are also getting to a point of allowing caller id.
There is a heap of "issues" posted around the website and some dissatisfaction with the device. but i am perfectly happy with it, and does everything i wanted, except sufficient memory.

Not a big deal to me, that is surely much less of an issue compared to my current problem with the unlocked screen. As for the pockets thing I don't think it will be a problem either, I'm used to the Alpine so I'm sure this won't be much of a big step.
Thanks for the responses guys, I'll be receiving mine tomorrow
My brother is getting my Alpine.
Edit: One more thing - does anyone know if my Alpine's car charger (3rd party, very cheap) will work with the universal or do I need to get a new one?
I have a real dilemma in that I think the HTC is so much better than other devices I've had but it's terrible in terms of one feature - answering phonecalls. Initially, I spent several days inadvertently calling friends and colleagues from my pocket. A bit of research and I installed the S2U2 locker. That work insofar as I stopped calling people at random but S2U2 - or S2U2 and the other software I have installed - conspired together in such a way that it was almost impossible to slide/tap/punch/kick my phone when an incoming call was shown to speak to the person. I missed 90% of incoming calls due to my device ignoring my attempts to answer the call. I've since uninstalled this and installed LockMeLite which was a gem for a couple of days. And then today the same thing happened. I couldn't unlock my handset as the "incoming call" pop-up was covering it. And another (this time, pretty important) call went to voicemail. I really can't go on like this. Does anyone have a better solution or is it time for me to go back to Nokia? I need a smartphone, not a PDA...
Thanks.
HD Tweak and set it to lock when the phone is on standby, then when a call comes in just press the lest phone key and it answers, works fine for me.
Thanks, I'll try that. I have HD Tweak installed, but that's something I haven't tried changing.
better yet, don't install those locking apps.
Try PocketShield.
It locks your device and has a differente unlocking method on incoming calls that allows you to unlock+answer and unlock+refuse call.
Perhaps Psygnosis84 didn't follow my original post - I installed "those locking apps" because I kept accidently calling people when the HD was in my pocket.
Thanks, syqe, for the tip. What KickAssMoves suggested (the setting in HD Tweak) has worked fine so far, but I'll try PocketShield as well.
This is a critical design flaw in my opinion and suggests the handset wasn't properly tested before being released.

I agreed with you, I also had the same problem before.. IMO, I think what KickAssMoves suggested is not so good compare to Pocketshield.
For me, HDtweak has a backlight problem when unlock it, light doesn't turn on until I press the power button. You also need to tab 2 times to unlock everytimes(not during the incoming call)
Pocketshield gives you free to unlock with light sensor, gesture(shaking) or move your finger..and many more to choose from.. which is much more convinient.
Why don't you just use the standard lock methods (aka pressing the power button or holding the end call button to lock the screen)? I use these methods and i have never had my hd randomly call anyone and when a call comes in the locks automatically disable for you to slide the answer/reject slider
pantyryder69's answer might as well be "well, this doesn't happen to me, why don't you try again?". Maybe I have fat fingers. Or weak ones. Or funny shapes in my pockets.
I tried Pocketshield but two things went against it. The trial's nag - a delay of 10 seconds - had me uninstalling it within a couple of hours. I can't test a piece of software with those sort of annoyances (it's the writers' perogative but their nag actually interfered with me trying to test if it had the funcationality I want). I found I had the same problem anyway, it locked my phone and I had to do a soft reset to get it back working (not sure what it was related to, possibly the nag screen).
I'm back to the HD Tweak solution of using the Windows Mobile screenlock. The screen dimming is annoying, but it does seem to work. I have to say, I'll be looking at an iPhone next time.
Hi telemecko, its known that at some point the "nag" screen caused some trouble, but in the latest builds that has been addressed:
(taken from http://www.pocketshield.net/download.htm)
4/10/09: Builds 2.6.2.X:
•Voice mail icon display issue (Omnia)
•After calls from unkown contacts, caller avatar stayed visible.
•Lock screen issue during process of dialing (fixed).
•Light sensor at dark reading 1 lumen when playing musig caused unlock (Omnia).
•"Evaluation" message caused some issues (fixed).

I'm facing similar problems with answering incoming calls. If it wasn't for the backlight problem, the tweak solution would be the best by far.
Did Pocketshield work fine for you ?
Not sure if anyone is following this now, anyway pocketchield works great. its made my life so much easier, no problem of random unlocking and ghost calls anymore!
hi all,
i have Some problem with the proximity sensor.
when i lanch a call, first i put the phone near My head, the phone goes black,
but 2 seconds after, when It start tonning (ringing in the speaker) the phone wake up.
if i put It off and back It goes off.
but when the person answer, It's the same thing, the phone wake up. and i must put It off the head and back.
if i dont do this i cut All people 3 or 4 times.
if i receive a call, no problem.
i know some people have already post same problem with proximity sensor, but nobody explain it.
if someone can help me to fix it.
(sorry for my English )
im sorry but I really need help
Hi ! I`m so sorry but I cant help you. The proximity sensor did act strange on me with no obvious reason and I was forced to hard reset ...
Cordialement ,
Sergiu
Even if i hard reset, there is no change.
If i call someone, on each step the phone switch on :
when start ringing ... and after when the person answer ...
is there a registry to edit, or maybe a ROM update ?? im in 1.43
But if i update the ROM i'll loose my orange tv player app
You may try to flash another ROM at your choice ...
I know this might sound a strange question, but do you have long hair?
I only ask as this issue has been raised by a few other people, and most of them have said it either happens with their girlfriends (who have long hair), or that they have long hair.
I have short hair and I literally couldn't be more impressed with the proximity sensor.
lol, no ...
i' ve short hair.
i tried with the finger hidding the proximity sensor, and i can see when the phone start ringing it wake up, and the same thing when the person answer, or answering machin.
so it's a software problem.
i tried to update the ROM, and it says it can't update
maybe because i'm on French Orange ROM .
i'm sure if i can update with RUU rom, it will work fine after
I have this problem occasionally. It seems the proximity sensor somehow cooperates with G-sensor, because last time I had this problem I was lying in bed while calling, and screen simply did not turn of. But when I turned the phone vertically, and back, it started to work. Very strange.
so i upload the ROM to an officialy 1.48 (i have no orange rom and app now)
but still the same problem.
the phone goes black, but wake up when start ringing, and same when the person answer the call
i need help, because each time i cut always the call if my hear touch "end call".
now to keep the call i put it back from my head and back to when start ringing, and i do the same 5 seconds later when the person answer.
and after its ok, the phone stay off
i love this phone, but i'm sad
I guess it's a bug HTC will have to fix at some time. I've read it can happen to all ROMs.
But for the meantime, there's a workaround. You can install S2U2, it's a nice program. and one of its features allows you to choose "blank screen on talk". Never fails. Try it. No more accidental button clicks.
Thx a lot i'll try it (try to find it before )
maybe someone can make a soft to have a slide to unlock while calling ??!!
but i'll try your soft and tell you
same problem with my hd2....despite I tryied several rom on several build.
just a hint: don't activate "sms wakeup" (BSB allows that), because if u receive a message during a call, display will activate again!
It's a big issue, coz I cut many calls or I push buttons during a call...
I need a cab to lock the screen during a call!
ok i try S2U2, but difficult to configure...
always the same thing.
i found that not all numbers bug !!
i try a friends and all is ok, but my wife or my mother or others it bug
i dont know why some work and other not
i some one can help me trying configure S2U2 ???
or a cab just maybe to slide unlock while calling, something like that.
are we only 2 with that bug ????
it's not about the number u call, it's about simple casistic! try to recall the same number once the black screen doesn't work...try and it's gonna work! it's how sensor application works....just when it wants!
everythin was right with the resistive screen, but the capacitive one needs to a different lock.
i test sevral times on the sames numbers.
always my friend number 1 work nice, and all others not
it's very strange !
after call, press windows key and then lock pad.... I am doing this now cause of occasional problems....
yep, its a way...
but it's so strange.
i see when i try to call a home phone all is ok.
and some operators just bug the proximity sensor !!??!!??
So strange.
i just try another rom (an english one) but the same thing
and i have some trouble to make a god configuration for S2U2
so still no solutions... thats too bad
Hi all,
I come back to you to explain the situation now.
I call the orange center for smartphone, and i explain my troubles, it was last thursday.
So they change my phone last friday.
I tried directly, and exactly the same problem.
i called them again, and explain again, then they change it an other time.
This morning they come change it for the 2nd time, i try directly again,
then the same thing. alwayes the same problem.
so i call them again, and they say someone call me in this week to talk about the trouble.
i try other orange sim card, and same problem.
so in all my contact list, i've only 2 numbers which there is no trouble.
For all others numbers, the phone wake up each time.
PS : the orange service has nobody instead of me who have this trouble
anyone have a solution ????
proximity problems
Hi,
i also have the proximity sensor problem (or rather wife has)
HTC HD2 on UK o2 operator ROM
as i said, wife has a problem of screen activating during calls, it has not happened to me yet ?
noticed she always holds the phone to her left ear (wont change sides she says), i hold it to the right ear !
really need a fix for this as she threw it at me tonight as she cut off a really important call ! !
After two weeks testing I found out that the original screen protector with the two holes for the sensor makes the problems!!!
thake the screen protector out or cut it and the proximity sensor will work perfect.

Hi all, I absolutely love the HD2. However, I find one really annoying problem about the "auto LCD shut off between dialing and after a call is connected, and this has been really driving me crazy! I'm not sure why no one has mentioned about this, is it because it is my problem of mis-using it or no one has bothered to voice it up?? I apologized if this has been posted but I couldn't find one solution so far.
It is about the auto LCD shut off sensor feature while making a call. My English is not that good, my mother tongue is Chinese, I will try my best to describe the problem written in English. I've tried so many cooked roms, all have the same old frustrating issue. After when I've dialed a number, as most ppl do, I will put the phone near my ear while waiting for the call to get connected. However, in the process while making the call while the phone is near my ear, the LCD will shut off by itself, and when a call is connected, the annoying issue will occur! When a call is connected, the LCD will turn back on by itself even though the phone is still in tack with the ear, as a result, part of our face will make contact on the screen and very often pressing one of the on-screen buttons! Also, it is not only this problem will happen after a call is connected, during a process of calling or during a conversation, if there is a notification prompted out, for example, a sms have been received, or a email has been received or low battery notification, the LCD will always turn back on and make the face accidentally press on one of the on-screen button, this is really annoying, is there a solution to let the sensor shut off the LCD for good until the phone has really get away from the ear and the face???
It's not a problem
It's an advantage
HTC did that to prevent you from touching anything with your ear and you cheek and maybe without this you could end the call accidentally or lunching apps so and so .....
Some people have found that this happens when their screen protector is too close or covering the sensor. Cutting away a small ammount of the screen protector to make sure it doesn't interfere with the sensor seems to be the answer.
Not sure you have read his question correctly - it turns off when he puts it to his head, which he wants, but then it turns back on again when the call connects.
I have the same problem, (incidentally had the same problem with a Diamond and Omnia II with Tachi phone canvas). Only solution was to breifly move it away from your head and back again, which I just got used to.
No idea how to solve it though. Sorry.
[APP] Proximity Sensor for Screen Off v0.2
Maybe you should look for this little app, it could work for you.
I can't post links, so make a search inside xda, there's a topic with that title.....

thank you so much! I will look for it, and hope it is a solution.
I have a problem with my HD 2 thats annoying. When i make phone calls, my cheek is constantly touching the screen which makes the phone beep so bad the caller can't hear me. I tried the sensitivity cab and it didn't help. I installed a screen protector and it didn't help. I thought there was a proximity sensor to keep this from happening. I searched and couldn't find a solution. I have to change phones if I'm expecting an important call right now. This is very disappointing for an 850.00 phone.
the phone should go to "sleep" so to speak when you place it to your cheek if your speaking to someone.
Im assuming this doesnt happen for you?
The screen goes dark, but, my cheek still activates it. DiD I miss a setting or something?
i cant say i've notice this problem myself, and ive not made any changed to settings. Sorry i cant be anymore help, im sure theres someone who can shed some light on this
Thanks for trying.
One annoying problem is also having threads whitout a clear title except for "I have some problem"
j/k
If your screen does go off then it means your proximity sensor is working. While it's off it's also unsensitive to the touch.
If instead you hear keypad tones sounds from your cheek contact, it means that it is being activated because you somehow moved your ear away from the sensor, check the display, it should be lit.
Happens to me as well from time to time, I just have to move the phone to my ear better so the sensor goes off and the problem is solved
No cookies for you, grumpy! Hahahaha! I didn't know about the moving thing. I'll try that next call. Thanks.
Took off screen protector, made a call, and purposely pressed my face onto the screen and no presses.....hmmmmm.
