I have a real dilemma in that I think the HTC is so much better than other devices I've had but it's terrible in terms of one feature - answering phonecalls. Initially, I spent several days inadvertently calling friends and colleagues from my pocket. A bit of research and I installed the S2U2 locker. That work insofar as I stopped calling people at random but S2U2 - or S2U2 and the other software I have installed - conspired together in such a way that it was almost impossible to slide/tap/punch/kick my phone when an incoming call was shown to speak to the person. I missed 90% of incoming calls due to my device ignoring my attempts to answer the call. I've since uninstalled this and installed LockMeLite which was a gem for a couple of days. And then today the same thing happened. I couldn't unlock my handset as the "incoming call" pop-up was covering it. And another (this time, pretty important) call went to voicemail. I really can't go on like this. Does anyone have a better solution or is it time for me to go back to Nokia? I need a smartphone, not a PDA...
Thanks.
HD Tweak and set it to lock when the phone is on standby, then when a call comes in just press the lest phone key and it answers, works fine for me.
Thanks, I'll try that. I have HD Tweak installed, but that's something I haven't tried changing.
better yet, don't install those locking apps.
Try PocketShield.
It locks your device and has a differente unlocking method on incoming calls that allows you to unlock+answer and unlock+refuse call.
Perhaps Psygnosis84 didn't follow my original post - I installed "those locking apps" because I kept accidently calling people when the HD was in my pocket.
Thanks, syqe, for the tip. What KickAssMoves suggested (the setting in HD Tweak) has worked fine so far, but I'll try PocketShield as well.
This is a critical design flaw in my opinion and suggests the handset wasn't properly tested before being released.

I agreed with you, I also had the same problem before.. IMO, I think what KickAssMoves suggested is not so good compare to Pocketshield.
For me, HDtweak has a backlight problem when unlock it, light doesn't turn on until I press the power button. You also need to tab 2 times to unlock everytimes(not during the incoming call)
Pocketshield gives you free to unlock with light sensor, gesture(shaking) or move your finger..and many more to choose from.. which is much more convinient.
Why don't you just use the standard lock methods (aka pressing the power button or holding the end call button to lock the screen)? I use these methods and i have never had my hd randomly call anyone and when a call comes in the locks automatically disable for you to slide the answer/reject slider
pantyryder69's answer might as well be "well, this doesn't happen to me, why don't you try again?". Maybe I have fat fingers. Or weak ones. Or funny shapes in my pockets.
I tried Pocketshield but two things went against it. The trial's nag - a delay of 10 seconds - had me uninstalling it within a couple of hours. I can't test a piece of software with those sort of annoyances (it's the writers' perogative but their nag actually interfered with me trying to test if it had the funcationality I want). I found I had the same problem anyway, it locked my phone and I had to do a soft reset to get it back working (not sure what it was related to, possibly the nag screen).
I'm back to the HD Tweak solution of using the Windows Mobile screenlock. The screen dimming is annoying, but it does seem to work. I have to say, I'll be looking at an iPhone next time.
Hi telemecko, its known that at some point the "nag" screen caused some trouble, but in the latest builds that has been addressed:
(taken from http://www.pocketshield.net/download.htm)
4/10/09: Builds 2.6.2.X:
•Voice mail icon display issue (Omnia)
•After calls from unkown contacts, caller avatar stayed visible.
•Lock screen issue during process of dialing (fixed).
•Light sensor at dark reading 1 lumen when playing musig caused unlock (Omnia).
•"Evaluation" message caused some issues (fixed).

I'm facing similar problems with answering incoming calls. If it wasn't for the backlight problem, the tweak solution would be the best by far.
Did Pocketshield work fine for you ?
Not sure if anyone is following this now, anyway pocketchield works great. its made my life so much easier, no problem of random unlocking and ghost calls anymore!

I'm sure many people here agree that it's very annoying when you're speaking on the phone and your ear accidentally opens up windows and programs or even worse - ends the call!
Surely one of you very clever chaps can make an app that uses the light sensor so that the Diamond knows you are speaking and therefore locks the screen.
It would help so much,
S.
The clever people already did it but because we, normal people, are too lazy to search through, can´t see it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=425650
...and this is just one example
I'm aware of this software but how does it work within phonecalls? I'm not talking about when the phone rings, I mean post-unlock during the phonecall...
read the post man, it`s not very large and you will find it like I did
The program doesn't do what I describe above, although the idea is brought up a few times in the thread. It can switch off the screen but i'm talking about the light sensor doing this automatically...
The Diamond already turns off the screen when you hold it to your ear (by using the light sensor)...
I thought the diamond shut off the screen on speaking/connecting the call? Plus, it doesn't turn back on without pressing the power button...
the light sensor is not sensitive enough for this use.
:-( Damn! That's a shame.

Interesting, the light sensor of my phone can do this. Initially, the screen turned off whenever I picked up a call. I found it annoying because many a times, I need to use the screen to key in some numbers (pin, a/c numbers, whatever). Then, I used Adv. Conf. to turn this feature off. And I found it even more annoying as I actually hanged up twice by my ear accidentally touching "end call" button. Now, I turned this back on again.... still annoying but less....
I think your light sensor should be able to do this. Maybe you can check this feature on Adv. Conf. to see if it's turned off by accident.
The only things that were turned off in adv.config were 'sleep during call' and 'fast sleep'. I have switched these on and the screen does switch off but is this due to the light sensor? I now use S2U2's feature to switch the screen off as it's faster (screen switches off on connection)...
But, with all these options, I also find it annoying when I have to key in my pin etc. That's why utilising the light sensor so when you take the phone away from your face it switches back on, would be great.
this is really funny! some ppl want this thing off and some ppl want this thing on.
for the record:
the diamond is by default switching off the screen after a few seconds. when i said the diamond i meant the light sensor.
now, from the history:
long, long time ago (about 3-4 months ) the devs here were trying to switch off this feature because if you have to dial one more number or want to switch yr speaker you'll face a black screen (just touch the middle/enter button and you are back in business). some said it is the light sensor, some said it is a timer.....mostly they tried by registry tweaks, don't even remember who was the first to succeed but it was a great victory ...hahahaha
today we have a few options. one of them (the most popular one i think) is schap's advanced configuration. another was is the famous twaek 3.2 (today is 5?).
on the last month we have a few ROMs that already had this tweak built in. i think our friend here has one of those ROMs of them (because he ha sit tweaked already).
m8 i think you can switch this option back to default (switch off the screen) with the advanced config tool.
this one is an example (i think this one was the first):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2278799&postcount=1-tweak no 8.
you can also look at this thread:

one more:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=415356&highlight=screen+call
and so on ....everything a search away (i used "screen+call")
Thanks for the post, my issue wasn't how to get the screen off during a call. It was what causes it to go off and if it is the light sensor, could an app be made so that when the phone is taken away from your face, the screen switches on again.
I agree. I would love it to switch off as default, but also TURN ON when I pull the phone away from my face... I can't understand why this is not the default behaviour. I have some time later on this month I will look at this more carefully and possibly program the solution.
Sprint Diamond
I agree that would be great. My screen on my Sprint Diamond has never turned off during a phone call. I didn't even know that was a feature on some diamonds until this thread. I have tried making a call and then covering the light sensor but nothing happens. So, here is my vote for the ability to get a screen that turns on and off as you put it to your ear and take it away.
just work exactly the same as iphone and the problem will be solved.......
I am considering finally upgrading form my old TouchPro to the new Diamond2 or TOuchPro2, however before doing that I would like to hear from people who has already got one of those models wheter the two most irritating issues with those phones have been solved?
1. Does the new Diamond2 includes a proximity sensor and handles correctly the turning the screen off during a call? It shoudl work like the iPhone, when you take the phone to your face it turns off and when you take it off it turns the screen on again.
2. Is the locking mechanism been improved? I.e. can you do the following without installing extra utilites:
a. Enable locking after a period of time when idle
b. When locked, alarms and sms should not unlock it to avoid accidental presses when in your pocket
c. Must be able to answer the phone while locked (slide to answer or other)
Thanks.

It has a curtain that blocks for you chin to push different buttons by mistake, which works well in my book.

Haven't tried that, I always lock my phone manually when needed.
b. When locked, alarms and sms should not unlock it to avoid accidental presses when in your pocket
They don't...
c. Must be able to answer the phone while locked (slide to answer or other)
Yes that's possible. Been possible on every HTC/Qtek device I have owned for the last many years... Maybe you just need an upgrade on your current device?
Thanks.

i called HTC and they said nothing they can do and that there is a 3rd party app to fix this....well i am to "stupid" cause i cant find it..
plz help.
2:Very sensitive screen and i have dificulty figuring out hoe to change that..
thnx allot guys for "listening" hope to get some answers...esspecially for nr1 its a pain....
Hi,
I know you are new on here but a few threads up from yours you would have found this one...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638
Take time out to read it and you should find answers to at least some of your problems.
Good luck

The screen is capacitive, so it shouldnt be possible for anything to be pressed in your pocket.

Whilst the screen is capacitive, the material of a pocket may be thin enough to still allow a key press to register.
Also I believe the hard keys would still be available to press and could hang up the call.
I think there is an issue with the keypad becoming active while on a call.
I've used this phone since launch and it's driving me nuts.
One of the main problems is the proximity sensor which should turn off the touch screen during an active call intermittently doesn't work.
I called my wife today and cut her off at least twice because of this bug.
There is a reg tweek to reduce the sensitivity of the screen- you have to google it.
SMS is alos occasionally sticking.
I'm going to start a new thread to ask if 1.61 cure these issues.
hi all,
i have Some problem with the proximity sensor.
when i lanch a call, first i put the phone near My head, the phone goes black,
but 2 seconds after, when It start tonning (ringing in the speaker) the phone wake up.
if i put It off and back It goes off.
but when the person answer, It's the same thing, the phone wake up. and i must put It off the head and back.
if i dont do this i cut All people 3 or 4 times.
if i receive a call, no problem.
i know some people have already post same problem with proximity sensor, but nobody explain it.
if someone can help me to fix it.
(sorry for my English )
im sorry but I really need help
Hi ! I`m so sorry but I cant help you. The proximity sensor did act strange on me with no obvious reason and I was forced to hard reset ...
Cordialement ,
Sergiu
Even if i hard reset, there is no change.
If i call someone, on each step the phone switch on :
when start ringing ... and after when the person answer ...
is there a registry to edit, or maybe a ROM update ?? im in 1.43
But if i update the ROM i'll loose my orange tv player app
You may try to flash another ROM at your choice ...
I know this might sound a strange question, but do you have long hair?
I only ask as this issue has been raised by a few other people, and most of them have said it either happens with their girlfriends (who have long hair), or that they have long hair.
I have short hair and I literally couldn't be more impressed with the proximity sensor.
lol, no ...
i' ve short hair.
i tried with the finger hidding the proximity sensor, and i can see when the phone start ringing it wake up, and the same thing when the person answer, or answering machin.
so it's a software problem.
i tried to update the ROM, and it says it can't update
maybe because i'm on French Orange ROM .
i'm sure if i can update with RUU rom, it will work fine after
I have this problem occasionally. It seems the proximity sensor somehow cooperates with G-sensor, because last time I had this problem I was lying in bed while calling, and screen simply did not turn of. But when I turned the phone vertically, and back, it started to work. Very strange.
so i upload the ROM to an officialy 1.48 (i have no orange rom and app now)
but still the same problem.
the phone goes black, but wake up when start ringing, and same when the person answer the call
i need help, because each time i cut always the call if my hear touch "end call".
now to keep the call i put it back from my head and back to when start ringing, and i do the same 5 seconds later when the person answer.
and after its ok, the phone stay off
i love this phone, but i'm sad
I guess it's a bug HTC will have to fix at some time. I've read it can happen to all ROMs.
But for the meantime, there's a workaround. You can install S2U2, it's a nice program. and one of its features allows you to choose "blank screen on talk". Never fails. Try it. No more accidental button clicks.
Thx a lot i'll try it (try to find it before )
maybe someone can make a soft to have a slide to unlock while calling ??!!
but i'll try your soft and tell you
same problem with my hd2....despite I tryied several rom on several build.
just a hint: don't activate "sms wakeup" (BSB allows that), because if u receive a message during a call, display will activate again!
It's a big issue, coz I cut many calls or I push buttons during a call...
I need a cab to lock the screen during a call!
ok i try S2U2, but difficult to configure...
always the same thing.
i found that not all numbers bug !!
i try a friends and all is ok, but my wife or my mother or others it bug
i dont know why some work and other not
i some one can help me trying configure S2U2 ???
or a cab just maybe to slide unlock while calling, something like that.
are we only 2 with that bug ????
it's not about the number u call, it's about simple casistic! try to recall the same number once the black screen doesn't work...try and it's gonna work! it's how sensor application works....just when it wants!
everythin was right with the resistive screen, but the capacitive one needs to a different lock.
i test sevral times on the sames numbers.
always my friend number 1 work nice, and all others not
it's very strange !
after call, press windows key and then lock pad.... I am doing this now cause of occasional problems....
yep, its a way...
but it's so strange.
i see when i try to call a home phone all is ok.
and some operators just bug the proximity sensor !!??!!??
So strange.
i just try another rom (an english one) but the same thing
and i have some trouble to make a god configuration for S2U2
so still no solutions... thats too bad
Hi all,
I come back to you to explain the situation now.
I call the orange center for smartphone, and i explain my troubles, it was last thursday.
So they change my phone last friday.
I tried directly, and exactly the same problem.
i called them again, and explain again, then they change it an other time.
This morning they come change it for the 2nd time, i try directly again,
then the same thing. alwayes the same problem.
so i call them again, and they say someone call me in this week to talk about the trouble.
i try other orange sim card, and same problem.
so in all my contact list, i've only 2 numbers which there is no trouble.
For all others numbers, the phone wake up each time.
PS : the orange service has nobody instead of me who have this trouble
anyone have a solution ????
proximity problems
Hi,
i also have the proximity sensor problem (or rather wife has)
HTC HD2 on UK o2 operator ROM
as i said, wife has a problem of screen activating during calls, it has not happened to me yet ?
noticed she always holds the phone to her left ear (wont change sides she says), i hold it to the right ear !
really need a fix for this as she threw it at me tonight as she cut off a really important call ! !
After two weeks testing I found out that the original screen protector with the two holes for the sensor makes the problems!!!
thake the screen protector out or cut it and the proximity sensor will work perfect.
Kochavy
Hi!
I"m not the only having the problem: during a call unintended taps takes place while screen waking up is not registered during the call. So, you see, I'm not sure a proximity sensor is the reason of the problem as far as screen is kept turned off.
I have tried to reproduce the issue by fingers, but wasn't lucky.
Have you any ideas how to eliminate the problem?
I mean not-rooted official up-to-date stock firmware use case.
And, by the way, I haven't found proximity sensor calibration in service menu for A1. Is it placed somewhere into another place?
That happens to me all the time too.
Yup, me too. While in call I sometimes unknowingly turn on the flashlight and probably look like an idiot. ?
With the rn3p I would constantly end up muted. With mi a1 the problem is much less although I've noticed that numbers are still pressed. I've learned over time to switch to keypad so when something gets touched it's not the mute and at worst the other person receives some key tones.
I also have this problem a lot. I mute myself 9/10. To bypass to problem, I just lock the screen before placing it against my ear.
Yes, a simple soutions is just when you call someone, imidiately press power button to lock the screen (no password or fingerprint requred to unlock)

That's what I've been doing. That and pushing the top part of the mobile on my face just to make sure. lol
Oh and use the Feedback app and send it to xiaomi and hope they fix it on the next update.
i had this problem too, has it been fixed in the latest of updates? its a really annoying bug.
You must be doing something wrong. This issue "must" have been in all smartphone operating systems in the world, if what you are saying is the truth.
There's no way to drop the call, or press anything while you are calling someone. The proximity sensor doesn't allow turning on the screen when it's close to an object. The gyroscope also turns off the screen when you rotate the phone vertically during a call.
But all I can say is that it's not a bug, this is how is your phone knows when you are in a call, and you put your phone to your ear, or when you use your "speaker", and so the phone knows it's supposed to used it's speaker to transfer voice through the call.
Beside my poor English, try to move your phone a bit vertically before putting it close to your ear.
same problem here, also disabling ambient display... i also tested proximity sensor with some apps and it seems ok
I have that problem too from the beginning. None of the updates came up with a solution
Same here: I mute, turn on the flashlight or even open apps sometimes with my face. And thanks for the input @SmallTarzan but i know how to operate a smartphone and did not have any similar problems for the last five years. Apart from that annoying bug it's a great phone.
Wow, i dont know of this bug since i'm using custom rom from very beginning.
Try to make a call then use your hand to cover top part of the phone, screen doesn't lock??
I am having this issue too and it is really annoying
And still nobody came up with a solution???
It's easy to understand why it happens.
Proximity activates while you're in a call, but apparently the touchscreen digitizer remains working (even though the screen is off). Touching the digitizer with your ears or cheeks activates different actions while you think your screen is locked.
I can't believe how this issue is not fixed yet! That's a shame!
Same applies for the network fluctuation issues. You need to either choose 3G or 4G to avoid loosing your data connection.
Xiaomi that's more than LAME! You need to be ashamed of yourselves.
It happens to me quite often, although not always.
It's more frequent during long calls. If the call lasts for less than a minute or so, it doesn't happen.
Proximity sensor works, and screen turns off as soon as I put it at my ear.
Keyboard is off and not responding for a while. Then, all of a sudden the phone comes alive.
In my case it's not the torch. What I activate unknowingly is the handsfree loudspeaker, which can be even more embarrassing, sometimes.
Maybe it's because I am left-handed.
In an attempt to have the proximity sensor fully covered by my face, I tried to make calls by holding the phone with my right hand, but to no avail, after some time the screen wakes up regardless of everything.
Happens to me too. Although I did notice some differences regarding the position of the phone on my ear or which side of my head I put the phone on, I started pressing the power button long ago to turn the screen off. It may not be ideal, but it takes care of it.
