Verizon/Alltel FL guys... check your GPS, it's working now! :-) - Palm Treo Pro

Hey Guys,
I don't post here often but have come to these forums trying to figure out why my GPS didn't work. I live in Central Florida and for the past year I've had 4 HTC Touch Pro phones and a Palm Treo Pro. None of them had a working GPS. I had thought I kept getting bad hardware. I then got a Droid about a week ago and the GPS didn't work on that one either. VERY frustrated at this point, I started reading a lot of forums and found that there were MANY people in FL that had Droids and no working GPS. I was on my way to the Verizon store yesterday and for the heck of it, turned on the Droid and GPSTest and found that I instantly had a full screen of sats that were locked on. From that point on I was getting a lock while in a metal building and in a couple houses and everywhere I went! I went to post about this on a Google forum and there were a lot of people in FL posting about how they did this or that and that got their GPS working for the first time. I did NOTHING and mine started working. It appears as though Verizon changed something on the network that FINALLY got all the old GPS "issues" for their Alltel customers resolved. I'm not sure they ever acknowledged it was an "issue" on their end but the GPS works now.
I even ran a little test and took my HTC Touch Pro and Palm Treo Pro (both unactivated with no phone number and what I thought to be a GPS that was broken) and turned them on with GPSTest and both were showing 8 sats with a lock!!!
Anyway, if you are an old Alltel customer in FL and think your GPS is broken, check it again!

Co-Pilot 8 Trial/ Garmin Trial.

I had a ROM with a co-pilot trial on it. Unfortunately the ROM wasn't that good. I switched to NRG ROM which is great but now i want to install the co-pilot trial. There is one on the HTC website but only for HTC TP2 - i have T-mobile US version. Any idea where i can get a trial?
Ant Trials available on the Garmin solution?
just install that one and it should work. The beauty of having wm os is that program can work on different hardware as long as the operating system matches. It's the same as installing an app on a dell machine or hp machine.
I purchased CoPilot during the Thanksgiving weekend when they had it on sale for $19.99. I'm very pleased with it so far on my TP2. I think it's $34.99 or something like that now. Watch their website for specials from time to time.

Unfortunately to download you need to enter your serial number and it won't accept the serial numbers from Tmobile TP2, only the HTC branded ones. Tmous want's you to sign up for there $10/month service! This is why I'm looking for a cab.
Co-Pilot 8 is on sale - just $19.99. Decided to give it a go. It works great! Sure, Garmin or TomTom may have a couple of extra nice-to-have's, but they are $100. For the basic get me from A to B and help me find places, Co-Pilot can't be beat!
It will all be downhill for TomTom, Garmin and all those other gps companies once Google Releases Google Navigation for Windows mobile like they did for the droid.
TomTom and Garmin's stock fell the month google released google navigation on the droid.
I just bought co pilot.
I am having issues with it. Anyone else?
It tells me to turn as, or after I am turning... (found this out while testing it, thankfully) I have changed the turn warning to the max.. but still no good. This is no good if I am relying on it for directions, I am bound to get lost. Also, the distance to a turn is always way off.. I can be right at a corner where I am supposed to turn, at a stop sign, and the distance to the turn will say 150 feet ahead. and it keeps telling me "Make right turn just ahead" even though I am right there.
Was testing it again today, and it had me go in circles for 10 minutes! No Lie!! It kept saying "Make a right, then another right" I know, I didn't have to... I just wanted to see how long it would stay in that loop.. finally I had to break it by going a direction it did not tell me to go.. then it recalculated the route.
Frustrating!!!
Haven't had this trouble on mine. Have you had Copilot check for all of the updates inside the application?

I don't think so, they have one HUGE advantage over Google, they work without cell service. That's pretty important up here where I live (Northwestern California), and in many areas across the west.
Good point. I wasn't thinking about that since I am in Southern California and there is basically service everywhere here.
I guess it depends on where you live.
But that Co-Pilot giving the wrong directions thing scares me. Imagine if you were going to an area you don't know well

Well, I was born (Riverside) and raised (West Covina. Proud Grad of the Covina HS Class of 1990) in SoCal, and I know they have plenty of dead spots in the mountains and deserts, but in the urban L.A./OC/IE area, you're definitely right.
I have yet to find a program that doesn't make mistakes, especially in remote or very rural areas, or in very new housing developments. I travel extensively across NorCal for work (everything from just north of Santa Rosa to the Oregon Border, and everything from just north of Sacramento to the Oregon Border and northeast to the Nevada Border), everything from Redding at 100,000 to the middle of nowhere, and have had GPS Programs and even dedicated units be off on occasion, sometimes by miles. The thing is, these programs assume an address should be at a certain point on the map, and most times it is, but sometimes it can pinpoint it at the wrong location, and they can be pretty frustating if you're in a remote area with few or no people around to ask. Or a development can be so new that it's not in any map database yet.
@ ryotgz: No I haven't checked from with in the program for an update... that did dawn on me since I just bought it! LOL I will give it a try. I have contacted ALK (the distributors of co pilot) but have yet to hear back from them....
@ Cali-railroader and kmx:
I understand that an occasional wrong direction, especially in rural areas, is going to happen. It is technology afterall, and none of it is perfect. However, these issues have all happened in busy, and old, metro areas in the mid atlantic region.

If you have spotty GPS in the Southeast for the next month, don't blame your ROM

http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/20/faa-warns-of-ongoing-gps-issues-in-southeastern-us-due-to-defens/
Don't panic, but anyone planning on using GPS in the southeastern US for the next month or so will likely want to make sure they have a fallback option. That's according to a flight advisory just issued by the FAA, which warns pilots that their GPS signal "may be unreliable or unavailable" due to "GPS tests" that the Department of Defense will be conducting between January 20th and February 22nd. Details are fairly light beyond that, but the FAA does note that when the "tests" occur they will be active for 45 minutes, and be followed by 15 minutes of off time -- additional notices to pilots will apparently be issued at least 24 hours prior to any test. Of course, while this particular advisory is directed at pilots, it will presumably will also affect all other GPS devices, as the FAA doesn't mention any GPS issues specific to aviation. The real question, however, is just what those mysterious "GPS tests" are -- if they're, in fact, GPS tests at all...

Thanks for the info!
Whats funny is, this day in age, I wonder how many people will honestly not know what fall back options they have.
A friend of mine brought her daughter to the grandparents house, who has all wireless house lines. The one phone the little girl was using got bad reception, and mom explained "because it's wireless". The little girl then says "You know, they should make house phones that have cords attached to the handset and base". I'm like "Wow, I better get rid of my VHS tapes laying around here before I have kids.

Some of these date back a little farther than myself, BUT I atleast knew about them.
Thanks for the heads up, guess I won't be using turn by turn for the next week.
and we'll never know what the government is testing during this....just hope for no more dead birds or fish :-/

New Firmware: Your thoughts and experiences

With some of the replacement phones beign sent out with the new firmware included and the update out soon, I would like to get your thoughts on performance and also have a place for issues and opinions.
Does your experience match what the beta group experienced? Are you having any issues? What is your opinion on the phone with the update installed?
Thanks for your help.
I am trying to get dell to send me a replacement with the new firmware. I have called 3 times so far: First time it was 209, Second time it was a 16gb SD (I used it since I had 8 before), and now I am waiting for another replacement device to arrive. The rep said he would make a note in the dispatch that I want 212 and said if I don't get 212 then I can return the replacement device. I currently am slightly happy with it since dell cant say my warranty is void as their representative told me to switch the sd cards.
Long story short I want 212 and I am disappointed that there mobility center is only in india now, according to the rep, because the language barrier makes it tough to get your point across.
So I just got a new Dell Venue Pro on the 14th. Everything was going well for the first day but yesterday my data connection would not work unless on wifi. I could still receive pictures but no maps, IE, any app data etc. And another weird thing, when I turn wifi off in the settings menu, my phone continues to use the wifi...I am sending this phone back to dell on tuesday because I just ordered another DVP for .99 cents, I paid 79.99 for this one but I am in my buyers remorse period so dells bout to pay me my 79.99 back.
are there many problem-free DVPs?
I am on my third DVP, 16GB with .206, and for some reason it has been problem free. zero problems. I'm shocked. makes me wonder if there is a silent majority (or minority) of DVP owners that have had problem free phones. wish I knew.
my first DVP, an 8GB model with .206, lasted three months and was locking up 5 times or more on some days but I put up with it. the phone speaker failed and they sent my second phone, 16Gb with .206. it lasted only 48 hours before I got the memory card error message and it bricked.
I've only had the third one for about a week and zero lockups. It's too good to be true. I'm waiting for the first lockup.
No Wifi lock ups at all (212) ...
BUt that is the only thing fixed...
The headset volume sucks big time.. camera remains worst in the world... the lock screen unlocking lag comes at times...
Still not very happy... but great improvement with the wifi
Yes, my experiences seem to match the beta group.
- No wifi crashes. In fact, no crashes at all - the phone feels rock solid.
- Calls since the update appear to sound noticeably clearer and crisper. I haven't seen anyone else in the thread mention this, so curious if this has happened for others too.
- More consistent signal. The phone seems to be on 'H' more often. Will be interesting to see if reception is better the next time I travel to weak signal areas!
Overall, a very nice update
im still waiting patiently for the update
I just got the .212 on Friday w/ NoDo for At&t from the recent Dell sale of Unlocked phones for $300. Not one crash. I've installed at least 30 apps over wifi and set-up my Xbox live and 3 email accounts and have not had any problems.
My only wish list so far....
A mass storage function. Zune interface is kind of limiting. I will have to try that registry edit.
Custom .mp3 ringtone maker.
Headphones could be louder and jack could be flat.
Camera could be better in low-light.
A way to customize basic tiles beyond changing color.
I wish Dell was selling the 32GBs unlocked for $300.
I really like this phone. I'm just a little nervous about exclaiming its greatness after three days.
Just got the firmware update. The first think it does after finished updating is crash after I lock the screen....
Hopefully this does not happen again..
where are you guys getting these updates?
and are they explicitly from dell and how can i tell if its from dell?
Offical Dell Update
I got the update when connecting my DVP up, update available.
Had to take the battery out (hard reset) for it to work properly.
2nd attempt was successful.
firmware version 2250.1800.7392.212
what issues was this new update supposed to address? anyone?

No - it's a review of .212 beta.
Wifi now works flawlessly for me, which is the most important one. I get a full signal at my desk as is so I really can't comment on if that one is improved - considering my signal was very weak at home (fluctuating between 1 bar of 3G and 2 bars of GPRS), I'll have a better idea of that when I get there. I confirm that there are more camera options, although I haven't actually tried taking a picture.
So far, so good!
The only issue mu DVP had was the fluctuating signal strength indicator when I was in areas of moderate-low signal. So far after the firmware update my indicator stays the same. Hopefully this means the battery life will improve too. Love my phone!

A little while after the update, my phone was blacked out/off and I had to battery pull to fix that, but otherwise it's been awesome with the new firmware. I was in the middle of nowhere last night and my signal went from 1 bar G to 3-4 bars 3G and anywhere in between, but for the most part data was zipping along.
Downloaded an app, lots of photo uploads and FB app checking and checking radar maps.
WiFi has been on most of the time and works well - without freezing. Downloaded Tentacles finally.

Same experience here. This morning the phone wouldn't wake up when pushing the button. Had to pull the battery to get the screen back.

Samsung S4 GPS: How good is it?

I am considering upgrading to S4 after almost 4 yrs on Touch Pro2. I just want to make sure also that the GPS is up to it as I am considering using it with a electronic chart program as a back up navigation for flying. I know that this GPS is also GLONASS compatible. But can it work in unassissted mode without any phone or data signal at all? Does it lock onto GPS signal fairly fast? Much appreciated personal experience regarding this. thanks.
It's a full GPS so it will work just fine without a data signal. I am pretty sure every phone made in the past 3 years can do this. I just turned off all data on my phone and ran GPS Status. It locked in less than 10 seconds indoors. But I did use my GPS earlier today, so it may have some data stored. But in any case, it will work for what you need. Having said that, so will any other modern device.
i would say it's pretty good from my own experience.. it can pinpoint my exact location within a few meters INDOORS! don't recall ever having a problem finding signal after having the device since it came out. And yes, it can work without data..
Works great to a 3 meter accuracy. In doors on a two story apartment complex.

I don't do any navigation for flying but my situation was similar to yours. I'm on SERO, had a TP2 when it came out to replace a Palm Centro, then switched to the EVO 3D (changed my plan to the $40+$10 just like you are about to do), and now on the S4. IMO it's worth the extra $20/month in many ways. For me it was a night and day difference going to the S4. Once Wimax was available in Southern California it was a big jump with the Evo 3D compared to the TP2. But with the S4 on Sprint with a LTE connection it's absolutely amazing.
As far as GPS is concerned, I travel frequently and use the Maps with Me app. A few weeks ago I was in remote areas like Arches National Park and Yellowstone where there is no reception for all carrier but Maps with Me operating strictly on GPS worked great.
Another thing you could do is open a new line and pick up a S4, their trial return policy has changed to 14 days so you can get one and test it in your area. Only issue with this is to watch out for the way they define 14 days.
Hope this helps and good luck!
Cool. Think I am going to make the jump... gonna call their upgrade line tomorrow. Hopefully I can do it in a sprint store also. Hate to have to wait in mail for it, but want to make sure account change done correctly
For SERO I recommend calling 1(888) 882-4030 via Sprint telesales to upgrade. I believe standard is 2 day shipping via UPS for $12.

Google maps issue

Any one have an issue with maps showing your direction of travel 90* or so from our actual travel? So if I am traveling North it will show me driving North but facing West the whole time. I am on clean rom se 2.0 but I noticed it on stock as well. Is there fix for this or a good alternative?
I have. Has been rare (twice[long boots]) and a restart fixed it.
Mine has been doing this ever since I got the phone. When Google went from maps 6 to 7 is when I noticed it on my HTC One and then my G2 did it from day one. So disappointed.

Yeah, annoying. Should be able to tell it to point in the direction of travel instead of using a borked compass setting.
You could calibrate it with GPS status app... there is none in stock. I don't really get this and if mine were that bad I would return the phone. Has the phone been around any magnets?
