As the title states, what on earth is it for? Some are saying its for the car kit, some say it's a charging port and I think we're all lost. Sorry I can't get a picture because the HD2 IS my camera! Anyone care to shed some light on this matter? I'm looking into a diy wireless charging solution and if these 3 pins are battery connectors, then I can use this port on the back.

It's for use with in car hands free and GPS. You take the back cover off and just click the phone in and hey presto, it's all snug and secure.

most definitely there must be... since it does charge with the car kit it seems.
You should be ok by checking with a digital tester the voltage output from those metal contacts

Good idea. I'll give that a shot now. If all goes as planned, great! But next, to work out how to jam an inductive coil behind the cover!

You'll be lucky! I think, think, you can get some whereby you need to remove the battery and the cradle fits in it's place. I would Google it, but I am hungover and feeling lazy.

Hmmm. Can't seem to find my multi meter. Anyone able to test if any of these connections have something to do with the battery terminals? At least until I can get my hands on a multi meter.
I modified my Galaxy Note to use inductive charging via a palm touchstone / patch.
Just a quick note. Not a whole lot to contribute here, because I largely followed the examples of the Qian Qi. That guy is awesome.
I don't think I voided a warranty, either. Only minimal teardown required (black plastic back, then the speaker section). Never came across a sticker I had to remove....

Notes:
- Buy a good soldering iron. Weller WESD51, set to 610 deg F, with 1/32" long conical tip, with lots of flux and lots of flux remover are the only reason I could do this. I can't stress enough the value of having good temperature control, knowledge of temperature, and so forth. I stumbled around with an "ordinary" soldering iron for a long time, and in hindsite, I can't believe I did so.
- Do not choke on the price. I already had a lot of soldering gear, and I bought $220 more. Spend the money. It's worth it.
- Watch the curious inventor youtube videos on soldering. This guy. Watch everything, several times. http://store.curiousinventor.com/
- You want 30 gauge wire. It's the only thing that just barely can be crammed in. I used the "Kynar" coated type. Buy at least 2 colors.
- as you look at the phone disassembled, with speaker on the bottom left, the +5 pin on the micro usb (MHL) port is the leftmost. I attached a wire to that, and a ground wire to the housing where the port was soldered.
- routed the wires under the speaker, then back, then into a VERY slight indentation into the battery compartment. used a blue "safe open" tool to help shape the wire / crimp ends. Once in the battery compartment, you're golden. Attach the inductive charging coil to the back of the samsung plastic back, add solder to the pads, and attach the wires.
- Attached is a picture with roughly how I routed wires. Red is +5V, Blue is ground. Be sure and double check if my recollection is right where the indentation is into the battery compartment. (that part is by memory).
- dont leave too much slack. it's really hard to get the samsung black pastic panel back on. Mine very slightly bulges.
- be careful where you put the charging sticky patch, because this phone is a little bit bigger than a palm pre. You have to consider if the phone can sit on the charger and "lock in" with the magnets. If you place it too high, it actually can't (in portrait)!
- Qian Qi had a really interesting point: most articles about how Li-ion batteries behave are wrong, and fully discharging the battery drastically reduces the number of cycles you have. So this is actually a very useful mod--whenever you don't use the phone, toss it on the charger.
Thanks for summing it up! Was actually thinking of doing this mod myself. Question: do you have a protective case on your Note? If so - what kind and how badly does it affect the magnetic properties?
No case. Especially because the note is so big, I think it would be unmanageable.
I took the samsung thin plastic back, and placed the Palm PRE (with charging coil still attached) on top of it, on the touchstone -- to figure out proper placement & mark with a pencil. I noticed a buzzing sound, coming from (I think) the induction coil on the palm pre back itself. I suspect if you use a case, this wont work well.
Also, the size/weight/placement of the galaxy note are such that the magnets are just barely strong enough to hold it. One time my phone was near, but off, the charger. I'm not sure if vibration from the phone did that, or my kids
In summary, I'm not sure how well it would work with a case. You might be able to research this on the net; among the 15 or 20 people that have bought a Pre, you might be able to find some info about the effect of a case on inductive charging.

im wanting to try this mod i have my touchstone on the way not thank you amazon but it seems like to me that the pad from the pre wouldnt fit under the cover of our phablet =/ could you post pics of the finished product and i think this is the only instance that i have seen someone attempt this with the note and i want to try it i love my note but would love it even more with inductive charging.

Thank you so much for your post I have my materials on the way but I hadn't seen a detailed guide for the note other than this one and was worried I would have to solder directly to the usb pins which looked scary lol I did have two questions though would your mod work the same way for the at&t note? Specifically the points where you soldered to the phone and can wireless charging be performed through a case?
Hey, OP here. You may want to hold off just a bit. Mine is exhibiting some issues now. As in, it says "charging" but it doesn't do so wirelessly. The phone will stay "charging" but the battery % never goes up. (It was slow before, but would charge fully over a night).
Charging via USB still works.
It may be something simple; I'm not sure. But I need to crack it open and take a peek, and I haven't had time to do that yet because my phone is functional at the moment.
If nothing has conspicuously changed, there may be something about the design that isn't sustainable. Or maybe my solder joint halfway broke, or one of the wires got smashed enough so that it's partially broken...
I'll write back with my findings. Bug me if I don't

No prob I just wanted to see if i could do it and if I can do it with little soldering experience I'm sure most could do it I haven't done this mod to my galaxy note though as there is way less room in its a far more complicated mod than the evo because you have to make room for wires in a device samsung made as thin as possible and the way you have to route the wires I feel like the solder joints would just break

For those who want to try this out but still have warrantee just buy a backcover, a micro usb plug and assemble it according to the directions here.If you need the note just take out the usb plug and the back cover and you're good to go.... Or leave it there.....
For those who don't know what pins to use on the usb plug:
Pin: 1 is 5V+ (red)
Pin: 5 is GND (black)
Works like a charm.......

yes it affects the stylus sometimes it reacts with delay and sometimes it clicks although only hovers over it

I was not a big stylus user; I can't stand the input lag. I didn't notice a difference, but I always considered the input speed unacceptable. Not sure why there would be any difference, anyway.
My big problem that I've never taken the time to address is that after some time, it's as though I can't pull enough current through the wires to charge. One day I need to crack this open & figure out why.

It is slower than normal, but completed in a night. I still have not dismantled my phone to attempt to repair this, but I want to soon
hey guys,
So i noticed 2 extra pins under the battery cover of my GN2 today! i looks like they are for wireless charging similar to what Samsung promised for the gs3. I don't really feel like waiting for the official wireless charging kit from Samsung so I'm going to attempt to make my own wireless charging back! I've seen videos like this before so i know it can be done! i have got the old inductive charger and back from my ancient palm pre so I'm going to give it a shot! just thought id spark up a bit of conversation about the topic and maybe learn a bit from some people who may already have done something similar!

As you can see in his pic the Note 2 has two sets of pins... One set (the upper pins) is for the NFC that lines up with the battery cover and the other set (next to the battery) is "most likely" for wireless charging because I did my own mod for the S3 and it works perfect but until someone does it we don't know for sure??

Just got it working! OMG this is sweet! haha tested it with some spare wires and it regonized that it was being charged wirelessly! now i just gotta make it look pretty and install it in the back panel of the phone! woo!

nope thats just the top pins! the bottom ones next to the battery are for wireless charging i just got it working too!

The whole mod cost me $18.00 on my S3 so that's how much it costs for everything... It's real simple too! I KNEW those bottom pins were for charging but some people just kept saying both sets of pins were for NFC which would be WRONG.... :highfive: Follow this thread and you can get all the stuff on Amazon... You will probably need some of the stronger magnets though which are another $10.00 for 100 of them on Ebay...

magnetic fields only induce current when the field changes(think transformer). It's AC not DC.

How long does it take to fully charge the phone? Because the palm's wireless charging module's output current is far lower than the samsung one as far as i knows.
It's limited in the kernel to .5A, optimally 6.2 hours.

What current? I thought current referred to electrons flowing down a wire. It is wire less.

Mate. Wiki how a transformer works. Its basically 2 coils set next to each other. The coil in the dock has current flowing through it and this creates a magnetic field. This local magnetic field pushes the electrons around in the coil we have put in the back of our phones and tadaaa! Current. Electrmagnetism into Electromagnetic induction. So we dont want more than 0.5A in the case coil.

Dude, I am an electrical engineer. It's more complicated than that. Only changing magnetic fields generate electric fields that induce current in a wire. The current is AC. 0.5A makes no sense, to me.

Has anyone noticed that their wireless charging orb is slipping?
The flatter the desk, the less it will slip. That desk is pretty flat. I wanted to keep the charger on another desk which has a slight incline, but after about 3-4 minutes, my Nexus 4 stops charging. And after another couple of minutes, it will actually fall onto the desk (and hopefully not on the floor). I even made sure there was no oils from my skin on the surfaces by cleaning them beforehand.
Pretty frustrating for a $60 charger. They really should have used magnets in this thing.

It has magnets on it....
There has to ALWAYS be someone with a problem with using the product wrong.
Just find a flat desk to put it on.
I dont know how yours is coming off, but mine lifts with the phone off the desk and i have to use two hands to separate it...

That is a flat desk, and it does not have magnets on it or in it.
Not sure why yours is slipping either...I actually find mine to be gripping too tightly

I have the exact same issue you are having. I got my charger today. I used it at work for about an hour or 2 with no issues then took the charger home and now my phone will not stick to the charger.
After a minute to a minute and a half, the phone is on the night stand no longer charging... (slipped of the charger)
I've had so many issues with my phone which had to be replace 3 times that I am just returning the charger for a refund.
Needless to say that I will never buy LG again nor a "Nexus" branded device.
That's fairly amazing slippage. You should get an Ikea desk with adjustable legs for a special tilt. Is it humid in your location? I wonder what factors cause this because I've tried bumpers and cases and they all stick right on there perfectly.
Had mines on the charger for over an hour with different types of cases (nillkin, official bumper and no case) called phone numerous times and sent messages to see phone. Phone never moved.

It does not have magnets. It uses that sticky silicon stuff on the inner ring to grip to the phone.

All of the sites are contradicting each other. Some say it's magnetized (Android Power), some that it's the tacky stuff (Android Central, Droid Life)

Maybe I should take a video of mine which does not stick at all.... There are absolutely no magnet in this and as nbell13 said, the silicon ring is what is supposed to hold the device just like a suction cup would stick to a piece of glass...
Did you just place the phone on the charger? What if you tried pushing the phone into the charger a bit instead of just placing it on there? The ring is rubber which would deform slightly if you have the phone on there and then apply pressure, and that deformation might act as a suction cup which would give you better grip. I don't have the charger so I can't test this, but for anyone who does can you try this and see if it's any harder to remove (indicating a better grip and less slipping) compared to just placing the phone on the charger?
That's really strange. I got mine today and it holds the phone very well on my nightstand. In fact, I was surprised how well. I also have an Energizer wireless charger that I used on the same nightstand and if I don't use a case, the phone slips right off. I suggest returning it for another one.

I have the LG, Energizer, and now the orb. Best bang for the buck, IMO is the LG charger. Looks cleaner but doesn't angle the phone without being creative like using a tablet stand to hold the LG charger and then the phone will just lay on top of it vertically.
However, having the orb, it does look cool on my desk. The footprint of the orb is really small compared to the LG. For now my LG is at home on the nightstand, the poor Energizer is now stowed away for travel and the Orb is sitting on my desk at work. And for the Energizer, a naked Nexus 4 will def slip off because of it's smooth surface. It literally hydroplanes off the charger. And the Energizer is angled downward as well so having a case or even a back protector will be a must when using the Energizer charger.
Does my orb slip? No. Sux that others have that issue. Not sure why.
Mine is also slipping. I think the magnet is not strong enough on my orb
Why are you placing the phone so high on the charger? Of course it will slide down sitting that high up, you should align the wireless charger with the center of the back on the phone where the wireless charging is. Make a video with your phone sideways and centered on the charger I bet it won't slip.

I don't understand this either. I will say, mine stick, and doesn't slip, but u don't have to put it on the orb that high. Just tested min, and I can put it on the orb, with the bottom of the phone touching the desk, and it continues to charge. I would think this would stop ur sliding. I would still get urs replaced. Along with being sticky, I can feel a slight pull of magnets on mine... Could this be related to phone hardware revision? mines rev 11. I think I read only 11, and 12 are qi certified? Anyone confirm this?
If the phone is charging there will be a slight magnetic attraction, regardless of whether or not there are magnets in the orb or the nexus. When a device is inductively charged there will be a magnetic force between the two coils.

uh that's not true. All Nexus 4s are the same. They're not going to make ones with and without wireless charging.
So I read that this device has wireless charging but I can't find an instance of the problem I'm having. Is there something special you have to enable to get it to charge with a qi pad? Neither the nexus orb nor my og lg pad will charge it. I thought the protective plastic might have caused this but even after peeling it back I don't get a charging indicator. Seems my nexus luck follows me wherever. I got one with a nice display and no physical defects seemingly on the first try. Am I doing something wrong here?

Mine charged wirelessly right away, there was nothing I had to manually enable. I tried it on 2 different LG WCP-700 Qi chargers.
Mine had the same issue, and it was the connectors for the coil on the inside. if you feel like opening the case you can try to clean them. that worked for me or just exchange the unit.

Mine was working and now it isn't as well.
I would check the back and see if it feels like you have space. in the case.
Mine seems to be charging fine on my Nexus 4 Orb.

Can you tell us what tools you used to open the device? I'm guessing suction cups, perhaps from iFixIt? Or did you go the spudger route?
As for cleaning the coils, are you referring to the 2 or 4 gold pressure contacts that are present on the back of the casing once the device is opened/separated?

I used a thin guitar pick and started at the bottom of the Screen next to the USB charging port and slowly opened it to the left side of the screen, ( the Side that does not have any buttons) and slowly went up the screen to the top and keep going till I was able to separate the the device from the back unit. But I caution you to be careful as you can easily break the case as IFixit mentions in.
the 4 connector are the ones, that I am referring to, mine device looked like they were not clean. I cleaned them up and after putting together again the wireless charging works.

Yes same problem with mine. Qi Charging did not work and neither did the NFC, although it did on the first day. Opened it up and cleaned off the gunk off the four contacts and Qi and NFC started working again.
Thanks for the advice... Everywhere was sold out near me. After a 55 mile drive to best buy I exchanged it... Way better than waiting on play store agony. This replacement seems better. Screen so far is the same nice quality and everything actually works. Wireless charging is fine. Good to know that this is easy to take apart. My problem though with opening the device is that I tend to get creaks etc afterward. I did search prior BTW... I guess I didn't look hard enough

I wonder about those units where people have not tried Qi Charging or NFC and how rampant a problem this is.
