are you talking about the insurance on your phone?

no it will not

It will make it more unlimited...your minutes will double and your life will force will quadruple.
totally worth it

no it won't affect it, unless u wifi tether too much and go over 5gb, its a low chance but sprint could charge you for it. chances are they wont tho

thanks for the replies guys sorry i was not clear enough on the post i was just scared they would charge me more if rooted.

They can't tell if you are rooted unless you hand over your phone to them. Otherwise, just watch how much you tether. Your phone doesn't pull 112 kbps (where I am at) like your laptop will. They can tell by how much data/over time you pull.

Installing a theme on an un-rooted phone

Forgive me if this is a stupid question.....Can I install a theme on my G1 if my phone is not rooted/jail broken?
Themes are rom specific so if you are not rooted to flash a rom than you also can not flasha theme. If you want a theme I would suggest going with a home replacment app like dxtop or something of the like.
And there are no stupid ?s just some where we can point and laugh at

Yea, I've had the phone less than a week and will probably root it. Problem is, I've never done it before. I watched the video on youtube and read about it but am a bit weary.
If anybody lives in or around Detroit and wants to do it for me, hit me up with a PM. Obviously, there's compensation involved

PLEASE don't go by youtube videos. We've seen to many people come here from getting lost on some bs video. There are plenty of guides here and people to help. Rooting is so simple if you just take your time and read. And in the long run it will be worth it cause when you run into a problem you will understand it. And hey you can give us some of that COMPENSATION.
I want some compensation too

HOLY CRAP!!!!!
Someone who is researching and learning. These are the type of people that I love helping. My Gtalk address is in your PM inbox, you are free to ask questions with no compensation needed.
P.S. I like the idea of waiting a couple weeks because then when you root it, you can really appreciate what it offers over stock.
Ok ok, this one is your's than can you at least send a cig my way, I forgot add my phone bill before they shut me off to my todo list so now I am back to poor, I must say they had good timing when they sent me the bill is overdo text when I was right outside the t-mobile store next to the supermarket. Do you think t-mobile is tracking us, next thing you know they will be monitoring my b.a.c. and sending me text like "you know you want to buy a mytouch"
Scary, I think I got one last night, but it erased it self to not leave any proof

Yes. I'm looking for a way to mess up my phone software so I can use my insurance to get a new phone. Is there. An way?
I bricked mine once by flashing a gsm radio.. =(
but if that's what you want, then go ahead!

this wouldn't get you a free phone, you'd have to pay a $100 deductible... you should be careful when making posts like this. Some people are really sensitive about cheating the system and will torch you. Having said that, I would flash a gsm radio like the second post said.

if ur paying for insurance then why don't u just brick it the easy way nd drop an actual brick on it... last i checked monthly insurance covered any cause for replacement even neglect
My first inclination is to flame you, because the day before my phone got stolen, Sprint raised their deductable from $50 to $100 because of people doing things like that. It sucked.
But with that said, if you still feel like being "that guy" just flash a gsm radio

ummm...run the RUU then uplug the device as it is flashing? you ever hear of insurance fraud my man?
Why do you need a new phone? If there is a defect, such as dust under the screen or paint chipping, call up customer service. They'll send you another one. If you REALLY needed to brick it, I would flash a Nexus kernel and radio. If you flash BOTH, that's the point of no return.

You could use flash_image to overwrite the nand with 0xFF's. Or my personal favorite, nuke it for 2 seconds in the microwave. I happen to be one of few people who has heard what it sounds like to be connected to a phone being nuked. You hear a thud, a couple beeps, a loud buzzing and a click...
Granted that guy took me seriously. But in general you should always try to call customer service or take it to a sprint store and argue for a replacement. If you waste enough of their time they will do it for you without your needing to destroy hardware and raise prices for the rest of us.
Use fresh ruu 1.56 sprint stock and unplugged bfre it finishes...anyways u might get the error 110 like me....
Yea because flashing a gsm radio isnt cheating the system. An insurance claim you pay for which is what he said he didnt say under warranty.
Ok, Im sending my phone in for chipped paint guys... Now tell me..
I run a mac, and am on fresh 2.0d
Before sending it in should I brick it using the GSM radio thing so they dont know im rooted.
Because i don't know how to unroot on a mac.
EDIT: Also on my new phone, can i use my existing nandroid backups?
Just run the stock RUU it does it by itself. It gets rid of root and it also may brick your phone which you dont care. I do not know if it works on mac tho.

You are the reason people like me have to pay high premiums. Is anyone honest anymore? You guys who do this crap piss me off!
You have high premiums because you have a high cost device. The cost is 100 for high end devices if you had a regular phone it would still be 50.

Get off your high horse. I suspect you are rooted, therefore I suspect you have some type of wireless tether that you are not paying for. The guy asked a question, if you don't like it then don't answer.
tethering.. is a built-in function of android.. that carriers took out. We are paying for the data... we are only taking back what they took away. wireless tether.. is a different method to transfer data.
sprint tv.. is a service that sprint provides.. and it cost them money to have those services. this site does not allow information to steal applications or services.

Anyone rooted and using tether for free is already scamming Sprint... And for a lot more than paying for a channel here and there.
BTW, just because a feature is native to the OS and blocked by a carrier for a premium, doesn't mean we should take it back freely. The reason they have to charge more is because of the added bandwidth that is THEIRS. We pay our monthly dues for our device; not for anything else we want to connect onto it. They most certainly have the right to charge a fee for that feature.
I'm not trying to be a hypocrit here by judging people who tether for free, because I'm rooted and I have used it a couple of times in the past. However, I'm not naive enough to not admit that what I did, and probably will do again in the future, isn't wrong.

He asked a question. I answered it. If you don't care for my answer, feel free to keep it to yourself. I am rooted, and I have yet to turn on wireless tether. I have 0 need for it. Just because you feel it's ok to steal, don't assume that I have the same opinion.
If the original question had been "Hey guys, Admorris has a sweet car. How can I use it without his consent?" Would you still be crying about my answer?
EDIT: As far as tethering, I use the paid version of PDANet, which I've had since shortly after I got the EVO, and long before I rooted. Which is why I don't need the wireless tether that came with my ROM.
This thread needs to be locked!!!!!!!!!
My 2cents:
hacking to get free hot spot is fine because android is open source and sprint locked down that feature. Unlocking it is fine and legal any part of the android OS is free for anyone to hack and use to their liking. Apps are a different story
Sprint tv is propritary feature/app and is not really apart of android it is a service they provide for a fee. Also there are a bunch of free channels like Usa, Fox and a few others with full episodes. Just wish it worked atleast over wifi. Hacking sprint tv i guess would be considered warez and xda does not support or allow warez on this site

Whoa Whoa I think this thread is getting a little personal huh guys? no beef here man... I asked a question and Bp3dots answered it. We are all entitled to our own opinion but to be honest I think everyone is getting off topic. If theres no straight answer to my question then just forget it. I truly appreciate any suggestions but I don't wanna start a huge thread of argument. So far I have not found anything on it and although many of you pose good points, I don't wanna steal from anyone especially Sprint. I just thought that it was something that was included and blocked just like the tether function, but I was wrong. Case closed..... And play nice guys

Saw this on Craigslist...

I dont have an EVO, but I saw this on CL
http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/mob/2241065529.html
If your reading this then you must have an EVO. And if you do you already know the battery life is the worst!!! I dies in about 4 or 5 hrs without even using it. Yea mine did that too.....at first.
First you have to root your phone. If your not rooted i can do that too. For extra of course! Then once i drop my addition on your phone you'll have a battery that lasts all day. You think im joking right? Look at the pictures.
**The first pic is of the screen i root your phone on!!**
**The second picture shows at the top when i last plugged my phone in....YES that DOES say over 16 HOURS since i last charged my phone!!! Dont believe me I'll show you on my own phone!!!
**The third is of the wifi screen your gonna use...you can use the internet off your phone on a laptop, ipad or whatever....
**The fourth pic is of me deleting the crap sprint apps wasting memory on my phone!!
....And yes i can make it happen on yours!! By the way I've got many more tricks i can show you if your interested...changing ROMs/operating systems & the whole 9 yards!!
Ok here's a quick off the top of my head list of things I can do. Hopefully I don't forget anything.
1. Root the phone. <<--You cant do anything w/o this $15
2. Do a full Nand unlock. You cant do wifi unless the security/ NAND is unlocked. <<--$5
3. WiFi tether. Can make the phone a hotspot so you dont have to pay sprint for it. Sprint charges $10 a month. <<-- Hit me with $10 and its yours. Dont pay sprint $10 a month
4. Change the way the phone looks. Colors, functions, home screens...everything
5. Change to the ROM of your choice. Like different operating systems. <<--#4 & #5 go together im flexible on this. Make me an offer
6. Change the kernel. Improve performance & battery functions. <<--$10 this is what makes your battery last wayyyyyy longer
7. Set processor speed. Overclock = make it faster. Underclock = slow things down...better battery life. <<--You either get #6 or #7 not both.
8. Backup all your contacts & apps forever & delete sprint apps <--$5 this is easy
9. Backup your entire system forever. <<--$5 this is easy
10. Show you how to get paid apps for free. <<--$5
I can also do any new android phone. Tmobile mytouch 4g's, Samsung EPIC's, Droid's and a bunch more....
I know I'm forgetting something. Email me when your ready. It goes straight to my phone. I'll answer immediately.
Damn lmao what a joke.. ...
Swyped from a galaxy far far away......
Wow what a rip off.
Everything he describes is just normal rooting and flashing. Takes an hour to do. Sounds like he just installs sprintlovers and netarchy and charges you out the ass

I don't see anything wrong. He's just charging for labor and believe it or not but some people don't want to learn how to do it themselves. You have people who go to car washes in the summer because they are too lazy to do it themselves. You have fast food joints for people too lazy to fix themselves a meal.
That's life. The point I'm trying to make is people don't have time.
last summer i made thousands under the table rooting/unlocking phones for $30 a pop.

nope, i had a no refund policy, even if their phone bricked.
I'm too lazy to do an ad. I thought about it but don't want to have to deal with the people complaining. The best thing if you are going to do it is to meet them somewhere and fix it instead of having them come over your place (retarded idea).
I do this myself... I've made over $100 on a 2-3 span of doing this. My ad is old now and expired, haven't started a new one. Old customers still refer people to me though
I see nothing wrong with this at all, and have been contemplating putting an ad up as a matter of fact. I'm out of work for a few months due to medical reasons, and could definitely use a little extra cash. I'd root evo's all day long for 25 to 30 bucks each. If someone wants their phone rooted for things like tethering and what not, but doesn't have the know-how or the interest in learning, but is willing to spend a little cash to have it done, I see nothing wrong with that at all. They would likely be the one's searching craigslist for something specific like that, which obviously means they are willing to pay for it. I think this thread motivated me even more to do it. I have all the time in the world these days.
Yea I kind dont see it being wrong, you're spending and effort = money. Otherwise the EVO owner would not know about it.

What does 4g idle status mean ??

Sorry for shouting, but I'm getting no answers.
Does everyone here also get an idle 4G icon after a short amount of time ?
What does it mean ?
I was under the impression that it's a phone design to conserve battery life, as explained here
http://www.deepeshpradhan.com/nexus-s4g-is-just-better-and-faster-and-its-is-google-phone
But, when mine does idle, it doesn't fall back to 3G, it just remains off, effectively turning this into a dumb unit. No connection.Nothing.
I'm looking for people to prove me wrong and to tell me that when they are idle on 4G, they receive notification INSTANTLY on apps like google talk.
I'm not talking 3 minutes delayed until 4G kicks back in again, I'm talking instant messaging , as it should be.
If I'm proved wrong, I must have a defective unit, but if this is software related, then somethings amiss ????
I have not noticed this myself... but I have seen at least one other thread saying the same thing.
I'd rather take the battery drain.

Because I don't believe you. I believe you must be getting a connection forced when you're having something polled. Or you get them when the icon goes back to green with bars. Not when it's grey with 3 dots. You cannot be. I've checked *#*#4636#*#* when it's idle, and there is simply NO connection.

4g idle test
from that article in the op:

Appreciate the video, but I think you may have more stuff polling than just gmail. If you revert totally to stock, I promise you will find that idle does not come off for push notifications. I see you have a lot of stiff loaded on your phone. It could be that.
I'm returning my phone tomorrow and getting it replaced. I'll try again.

Ok, do you think I may have a defective handset ? Could it be hardware related ?
I have literally just sent myself another email (at 08:22am) and my phone is sitting idle on my table at 08:29 with no email notification...
It's driving me mad. I literally cannot work like this (I rely on gtalk and gmail for my business)
If this is handset related, I can live with it if it fixes itself when I swap it out. If it's software related, I guess I'm screwed.
I just think that you guys have something that's polling regularly ??
Yet another example.

Why don't you leave it on 3g? I can tell you that from my experience with the EVO, I could never leave 4G on because it'd knock down batterylife to about 6-8 hours.

thats because the evo leaves the connection on. this is the whole point of "idle", so everybody doesnt complain of battery on 4g. now we are faced with a different problem. the video is hard to argue with. lets bug sammy to come up with a solution. until then, those who are affected by this just go back to 3g?

Happy to leave it on 3G for now. Not happy to be paying $10 a month for premium data.

i believe it has been confirmed that 10 bucks isnt for 4g, rather "cool phone tax"
best way to prove it would be to find out if any non 4g phones are paying the fee. again this is what i heard and i could be wrong.

just try another phone then. as far as i can tell i dont have anything else polling, the weather channel widget is the only active item i have.
im clearly not having the same issue as you and of the 5 people responding in this thread only one is having a problem. with 5 threads in 6 days i can tell you 2 things.
1. no one is going to be able to solve your problem if no one else is having iit or can replicate t.
2. no one is going to bother cuz of "oh its that guy again with his same problem" factor.
stop wasting time and go get a replacement before its to late.
try running the widget i got and see if it helps at all. if thats the reason i dont have the problem then i say the fix has been found.
again i refer you to the article you posted
When you call upon it to deliver super-speedy 4G internet, it kicks back on in a matter of seconds.

Dude, stop being a dufus.
It's supposed to kick back in in a matter of seconds.
It isn't, clearly as my video shows.
You have a weather widget which probably polls, plus god knows how many other widgets and apps pulling in stuff every few seconds.
I have stock, with no apps apart from a clock on the home screen.
I will be swapp[ing the phone out tomorrow. I will then do the same tests with stock software out of the box,and see what happens when it idles.
I will come back here and let you know what happens. I will humbly apologise for wasting time if it's seen to be a hardware thing, but for now I will hold judgment.
No need to get snarky.

i know it seems a stupid question but maybe an over sight
