Soft reset w/o opening cover possible? - HD2 General

Is there any way to soft reset the phone when it hangs(ie becomes completely unresponsive) without opening the back cover and pressing the red button?
(I know that hard reset is to hold volume buttons, call cancel button and then volume up button)

HD Tweak
If its not totally hung you can use a pgm called HD Tweak which puts another icon called HD reset on the start menu if you press this it will ask reset y/n select y and the device will reset.
Hope this helps.

Sure, just press and hold the power button (lower right corner) for a few seconds, and a screen will come out with several options. Click on "power off", that does exactly a soft reset the next time you turn on the device with the same button.

No way if it's completely unresponsive.

I find it easier to just remove the battery and then pop it back in given the fact that there's no stylus and I've already got the back cover off.

I'm guessing that the op was trying to avoid removing the battery cover and therin stressing the little catches that hold it in place
either way, thanks for the tips guys, will no doubt be needing to do this myself soon as mine arrives tomorrow!

Ah, good point. I assumed he found pressing the button difficult without a stylus or something small enough to fit in the hole.

Actually the reason I asked because I just bought the phone and dont want to scare my classmates by opening the backcover and resetting when it crashes. Uninformed crowds tend to wonder why would anyone buy a phone that isnt working properly. So I try to find an "elegant" way to reset it without attracting attention

Heh; I remember with one of the older palm models, some clever entrepreneur started selling replacement battery covers with a pre-drilled hole on ebay for a couple bucks apiece. "How to make your first million".

hardreset without a stylus

im trying to hardreset my p4350, but nothing is working.
i tried with an earring and i can't really feel the reset button in the hole on the bottom.... i can't get it to hardreset.. i hold down the two softbuttons which i finally figured out are the lines not the red and green and not ok/windows... anyway... i hold htem down, press the reset hole, then nothing.
do you do this with windows trying (and failing) to boot, or with the power off? i've tried it both ways with no sucess =(
so you also cannot softreset????
try a hardreset by "start - settings - delete storage (or so)" i guess.
but i cannot belive that you even cannot softreset. and when you can softreset - you should be able to hardreset

holdin the softkeys for 5 sec and once pressing the reset button should do the trick.
but when nothing happens.....
simply throw off the battery for 10 secs, then put it again, press power button shortly and press softkeys and hold it. it will help you without reset!

The hole in the "bottom" ie. next to the charging / sync port is your microphone - please do NOT go poking around in there, or you will wind up with a non-working phone.
The reset button on a Wing is on the left side, directly below the volume slider. A paper clip or ball point pen should work, if you don't have a stylus.
Good luck!

I erally, really hope that this is not the soulution.....

Were you able to get it to reset by using the correct button? If so, does your microphone still work - have you tried placing a call to see if the other person can hear you?
Good luck!

How To Perform A Hard Reset On X1

Hi folks.
There are two ways to hard reset the X1.
First way - Start>Settings>System>Clear Storage then enter the number 1234 and press Yes.
Second way - Press and hold the two silver keys (left and right) situated just below the screen. Now insert the stylus pen into the tiny hole which is situated around the bottom right of the back of the device for 5 seconds. Follow the on screen instructions.
It is advisable to back up your data before performing a hard reset.
FYI - a soft reset can be performed by ONLY inserting the stylus pen into the tiny hole for 5 seconds.
Thankyou mate, been looking for the tiny hole without success
Thought it was missing.
Very nice! Thanks for the info.
For those who can't find the tiny hole, you have to remove the battery cover.
Sorry forgot to mention that you have to remove the battery cover. Also the hole is situated where the stylus pen sits. So you have to remove the stylus pen in order to use the hole.
Thanks tjex for pointing it out.
Do you have to have a full battery before performing a hard reset?

You follow the the line where the stylus is inserted. Form bottom to top, you will encounter a rectangle, then the MicroSD slot, another rectangle and finally a round hole. This is it.
SOLVED:
in seconds
Power off you X1.
Hold down the two "Soft" keys and turn power back on to your X1..
Release the two key....
You should see the white screen with blue text asking if you want to restore to the "factory" default setting....Press "r"

Phew...
Needed the second option, as loaded some software on and it conflicted with some other that was on there - oh well bit of a spring clean as well!
Also might be worth pointing out that you need to enter the commands using the keyboard for the second option - me being a plank was hitting the X-panel button for ages before I realised what it was asking!!!
Well, there would be much less confusion if you said that you have to take battery lid out
How someone can not know about the reset hole is beyond me. I noticed in shop, before I actually bought the device.

Nice. thanhk Bro
You can also hard reset using Power button instead of reset button under( :-/ ) the battery cover.
Just turn off your phone, and press and hold both softkeys (silver ones) and just press the power button (do not hold it)
Strangely, when you want to access bootloader you hold the power button with volume down button until the bootloader appears.
Sorry, but I hardresetted it but nothing happens after the SE logo came and went away. I only got a black screen, someone help me please.
EDIT: Nevermind, got it. Had to wait some minutes
any other option to do it? i try both way, but can't... pls help...
I think you have to let go of either the power button or the hole button (depending on which method you're trying) before you let go of the two face buttons.
Thanks to every bodies. I have practised the soft and hard resets. The tiny hole is really not tiny but was hard to find.
Once again thanks!

Crazy volume problem

Basically, it is as if the top volume button is held down, and the volume is continuously going up on my HD, even when I try to turn it down, it shoots back up again, and is stuck on the volume screen. Sometimes, if I turn it down to silent, it will stay silent for a few seconds, then the volume goes up again and keeps going up.
Really annoying as it means the phone is basically unusable as I'm pretty much always trapped in the volume screen!
Any ideas?
I would suppose that a button is stuck!
Take of the back cover and take a good look at the buttons to see if anything could be wrong!

I had the same problem as you but I then realize that when I was putting down the volume while in a conversation was my face pressing the screen and increasing again the volume...could it be your same problem?

Nope, because it happens if I don't touch the phone and just leave it on the table
Have you tried a hard reset?
Do a backup first.
Turn off the phone. If you can't pull the battery out.
Hold the volume up + down at the same time then press the power on button for about 1 second. Let go of the power button while keeping the volume up and down still pressed down.
You should see a blue / green / red screen then just follow the instructions on screen.
If this doesn't solve your problem then most likely something is keeping your volume up button depressed internally. Take it back for repair...
The volume slider malfunctioning is a big one on HTC devices known issues. I've had the same problem with my elf....and I've seen plenty that do too. Your best bet would be to take it to an authorized service rep. Sucks I know
Try to remove the cover and use it... the pressing mechanism is on the cover...

Tried that, still the same problem.
I'm going to try a hard reset today, if I still get the problem, going to ask Orange to replace it. I wonder if they'll let me pick another phone, I'm getting a bit fed up with the HD!
I have the same problem, it occurs randomly and I discovered that if I quickly press the power button to stand by the phone and press it again to exit from stand by, the volume bug disappears and phone starts working well again. I thought it was a software bug but I still have it on 1.19. It rarely happens now on 1.13 was more frequent.

Soft Reset a TP2

Is there a simple, free app to soft reset my phone. I wonder who thought win mo had progressed to the point where an occasional soft reset would not be needed
You can use Advanced Configuration Tool:
Menu - Soft reset
MemMaid has the same option, but it is not free.
Get HD Tweak here, and you get a tweaker that can be used for settings, plus an HD Soft Reset app you can add to the start menu.
http://www.montecristoff.com/hdtweak.htm
Or check this topic.
There is also that little button on the side of the phone... Little hole. Use your stylus... says "RESET" Unless for some reason, that's not on all TP2s...

I find it a pain I need to remove the back cover to do that. On my fuze (touch pro) I just had to use the stylus and I could push the reset button which was at the bottom of the phone.

... Am I being punk'd? Like, seriously... is the T-Mobile one some miraculous feat of engineering that they were able to put the reset button on the side of the phone? Seriously. Mine is on the right side... Are certain yours isn't on the side of the phone?
*edit* After doing a little more research, I found that for some reason, the TILT 2 has that behind the battery cover. Sorry for my response. I was seriously just flabbergasted...
yeah very stupid design flaw there... I was flabbergasted when I purchased it!
Windows Marketplace has an App called "Reboot" which is exactly what you're looking for.

google or forum search for psShutXP if the above link doesn't work.
Its a free cab that does soft resets. You hold the power buton for 2 secs and a menu pops up to either display off / turn off / soft reset or cancel.
Can't use just hold the power button for three seconds and tap yes at the dialog box to power off the phone then press the power button again to power on? This works for me on my tmo US phone.
Soft Reset made easy
I contacted HTC to ask the difference between a soft reset using the hard to reach reset button and just powering the TP2 off and then on. They said there was no difference and the red power button would perform a soft reset.
Obvious question then is "what is the reset button for?"

Theres a number of ways you can soft reset the phone.. from powering down the unit to navigating to a soft reset shortcut in the start menu to pressing the red reset button on the side of the phone.
I guess using the reset button on the side of the phone just became habit on the touch pro (fuze) so when I need to reset my mind automatically goes to popping off the cover so I can get at it EVEN though their are alternatives. I'm sure I'll get over it

Sure, powering off and then power on is the same as pressing the reset button. But consider this: what if your device freezes so badly that the power button is no longer responsive? The reset button is now your friend
(or you can pull the battery, but that's doesn't sound very safe to do)
That being said, HTC did a silly job putting the reset button under the battery cover. They should just hide it in the stylus slot like they did with the original Touch Diamond and the Touch Pro.

Check out this.
xdaShutdown a beautiful application...already in the first sticky thread of this section

HD tweak is a tweak program like the Advanced Config tool that has a built in soft reset with it. It is free and is on this forum. Has many other uses as well.
Here Try this, made a cab from Josh Koss's rom. This will place an icon in the start menu that will reboot the device when pressed
u can also use the htc clean ram app i never soft reset my tp2 i just clean the ram @ level 3 twice a day try it ul love it
I prefer Slide 2 Shutdown the best... It gives you the option to Slide to Power off your phone, Slide 2 Reset your phone, or Slide 2 Sleep... Pretty cool UI...

Dropped my phone, no power up.

Help! It appears to still be charging, but after 100s of power button presses, no boot.
Any thoughts?
:-(
Did you take out the battery? If not, try it.
Try holding Power + Vol down + Trackball for more than 30 seconds to do a soft reset. Probably a long shot by who knows.

That doesn't sound good. I don't know if any of this will help but you can try the following: I would say try removing the battery and disconnecting the charger. Try turning on a few times with out power to drain any residual power. Then pop the battery back in and try to turn it back on again.
If that doesn't work, try a hard reset.
I believe the factory reset options are:
1) Turn the power off. If your Nexus One is frozen, pull the battery out and reinsert it
2) Hold the Volume Down button
3) Press and release the Power button
You are now presented with a menu that allows for Fastbook, Recovery, Clear Storage, and Simlock
4) Select Clear Storage by pressing the Volume Down button
5)Press and release the Power button
Now simply confirm your decision: Volume Up for YES and Volume Down for NO
If you selected YES, all data including third-party applications will be deleted from the device. Once
Tried the soft reset, nothing happened.
No screen and no trackball light when I press power button.

Yeah, but a scuff could be from anything... there's no way to know that you dropped the phone and it's no longer working because of that. Just tell them you don't know what happened and you need a warranty claim. They should repair your phone.
Just got off the phone with phoneclaim.com, and apparently after getting a letter saying they wouldn't cover the Nexus One (the same day i broke mine) they have a new one on back order for me. My deductable is like 130. Perhaps I can warranty my current one and keep the new one for backup?
What a day...
I have cyanogenmod on this phone, is that going to change things when I send it in for a warranty claim?
