Is there a simple, free app to soft reset my phone. I wonder who thought win mo had progressed to the point where an occasional soft reset would not be needed
You can use Advanced Configuration Tool:
Menu - Soft reset
MemMaid has the same option, but it is not free.
Get HD Tweak here, and you get a tweaker that can be used for settings, plus an HD Soft Reset app you can add to the start menu.

There is also that little button on the side of the phone... Little hole. Use your stylus... says "RESET" Unless for some reason, that's not on all TP2s...

I find it a pain I need to remove the back cover to do that. On my fuze (touch pro) I just had to use the stylus and I could push the reset button which was at the bottom of the phone.

... Am I being punk'd? Like, seriously... is the T-Mobile one some miraculous feat of engineering that they were able to put the reset button on the side of the phone? Seriously. Mine is on the right side... Are certain yours isn't on the side of the phone?
*edit* After doing a little more research, I found that for some reason, the TILT 2 has that behind the battery cover. Sorry for my response. I was seriously just flabbergasted...
yeah very stupid design flaw there... I was flabbergasted when I purchased it!
Windows Marketplace has an App called "Reboot" which is exactly what you're looking for.

google or forum search for psShutXP if the above link doesn't work.
Its a free cab that does soft resets. You hold the power buton for 2 secs and a menu pops up to either display off / turn off / soft reset or cancel.
Can't use just hold the power button for three seconds and tap yes at the dialog box to power off the phone then press the power button again to power on? This works for me on my tmo US phone.
Soft Reset made easy
I contacted HTC to ask the difference between a soft reset using the hard to reach reset button and just powering the TP2 off and then on. They said there was no difference and the red power button would perform a soft reset.
Obvious question then is "what is the reset button for?"

Theres a number of ways you can soft reset the phone.. from powering down the unit to navigating to a soft reset shortcut in the start menu to pressing the red reset button on the side of the phone.
I guess using the reset button on the side of the phone just became habit on the touch pro (fuze) so when I need to reset my mind automatically goes to popping off the cover so I can get at it EVEN though their are alternatives. I'm sure I'll get over it

Sure, powering off and then power on is the same as pressing the reset button. But consider this: what if your device freezes so badly that the power button is no longer responsive? The reset button is now your friend
(or you can pull the battery, but that's doesn't sound very safe to do)
That being said, HTC did a silly job putting the reset button under the battery cover. They should just hide it in the stylus slot like they did with the original Touch Diamond and the Touch Pro.

HD tweak is a tweak program like the Advanced Config tool that has a built in soft reset with it. It is free and is on this forum. Has many other uses as well.
Here Try this, made a cab from Josh Koss's rom. This will place an icon in the start menu that will reboot the device when pressed
u can also use the htc clean ram app i never soft reset my tp2 i just clean the ram @ level 3 twice a day try it ul love it
I prefer Slide 2 Shutdown the best... It gives you the option to Slide to Power off your phone, Slide 2 Reset your phone, or Slide 2 Sleep... Pretty cool UI...

There is no timing...
Just press and hold comm. button and the voicedial button.
Than put your stylus for one sec on the reset hole and still hold the 2 buttons mentioned above.
Than the phone will boot and you will see a screen asking you to press the (green) send button to hardreset.

i had the same problem with hard reset yesterday (my first hard reset ever . after a few tries i found that most proper way to hard reset device is:
1) press & hold comm button + voice dial button
2) press reset button (while holding buttons mentioned above)
3) KEEP HOLDING comm & voice dial buttons
4) after a while hard reset is done, so we can release all buttons
big thx eva_d!
arrggh!
This has been the best forum i have come accross. My phone function ends up as being a blank in the task manager and i constantly by mistake quit i while i am trying to quit something else. a proper pain...
I am tryin to hard reset the phone so i can set it up in corporate mode...i just seem to be completely unableto get it...i have been trying to hold the two buttons and press reset while still holding the two buttons....five minutes later still nothing....arrgh. Any solutions....
This is from the manual:
To perform a hard reset
1. Press and hold the Comm Manager button and Voice Command
button on the device.
2. Keep the two buttons pressed, and at the same time, use the
stylus to lightly press and hold the RESET button.

it is frustrating at first but it is easier with practice. in my experience i released the stylus after about 5 secs and i was prompted with a question if I wanted to format the device [hit send button to start]
Do you really need hard reset?
Did you try clear storage?
Some times it is enough to clear your phone...
If you're feeling generous, can you try hardreset using VJEschaton?
I've never tested it on WM5 hardware, I haven't had a good reason to hardreset yet.
V
VJEshscaton now works on the Wizard, although I think there are easier ways to reset our phones Eg, using them!

how to do hardreset??
I was going to say RTFM but amazingly enough this is not mentioned in the FM...
One way is to press and hold the Camera and Comm Manager buttons simultaneously and then press the Reset button (through the small hole at the bottom of the phone.
Another way is Settings -> System -> Clear Storage.
Before you do this, keep in mind that Hard Reset will wipe all your installed applications and data. Make sure that you have a good backup before proceeding!!!!

I tried this numerous times but instead of hard reset the soft one occured...
EDIT---> It does work indeed!!
Actually, abubasim just forgot one miner detail:
It's camera + comm manager + power, hold those 3 and soft reset. A black screen should come up saying: "press send to restore defaults". Press the green phone button to complete hard reset or any other button to cancel.

That's entirely right. If at the point that you get the display making you choose between reset or cancel, slide out your keyboard and press the given keys Should work just fine, have done it myself several times.

that was hard to perform lol, hard-reset the "hard way" al by myself.
I have also experienced problems hard resetting the device and have resorted to Start>Settings>Clear Storage and it seems to have the same effect, no?

yeah.. clear storage is the same right??? hardreset ya?
can someone take a video on this 'hardreset'

thanks.
just hard reset my xperia after trying so many times like the others out there.
just wanna add additional info, you have to keep on pressing and holding the 3 keys (2 front keys and the reset button) until you get the blue screen.
if you press then simultaneously for just a few sec w/o waiting for the blue screen, you'll just soft reset your unit.
Is there any way to soft reset the phone when it hangs(ie becomes completely unresponsive) without opening the back cover and pressing the red button?
(I know that hard reset is to hold volume buttons, call cancel button and then volume up button)
HD Tweak
If its not totally hung you can use a pgm called HD Tweak which puts another icon called HD reset on the start menu if you press this it will ask reset y/n select y and the device will reset.
Hope this helps.
Sure, just press and hold the power button (lower right corner) for a few seconds, and a screen will come out with several options. Click on "power off", that does exactly a soft reset the next time you turn on the device with the same button.

No way if it's completely unresponsive.
I find it easier to just remove the battery and then pop it back in given the fact that there's no stylus and I've already got the back cover off.

either way, thanks for the tips guys, will no doubt be needing to do this myself soon as mine arrives tomorrow!

Ah, good point. I assumed he found pressing the button difficult without a stylus or something small enough to fit in the hole.
Actually the reason I asked because I just bought the phone and dont want to scare my classmates by opening the backcover and resetting when it crashes. Uninformed crowds tend to wonder why would anyone buy a phone that isnt working properly. So I try to find an "elegant" way to reset it without attracting attention

hmmm.. i dont now.
I asked this in another thread but then thought it should have its own as it is relevant to more than one problem. Apologies if this has been asked, I couldn't find it.
So as the title says, is there any way to soft reset without removing the battery cover, such as some button combination presses a la the iphone (in which you hold the power button and home button down).
The reason I ask is that on my old HD2 the battery cover was loose on one corner and was never flush and was in a constantly 'popped out' position which really really annoyed me and made the phone creak when in my hands. I don't want to keep putting the cover on and off so a button combination would be very useful.
If there is no button combination, would the AE button mapping program ( http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php) work if you assigned for example a reset with a triple press of the back key? Although if the phone has crashed then I doubt any programs would respond, but worth a shot if it happens to anyone to try it
Thanks for your help!
If the device is freezed, any attempt to softreset with a button will be vain, no program will run and softreset the device; Open the cover and remove the battery (it's way easyer than find something to soft-reset, damn htc, once I've removed the back cover, it's all useless!)
If you want to soft-reset when the device is still running fine (or semi-fine) you can use any program you like, such as XDA Shutdown, or keep pressed the end jey to shut down
Yes, if the device hasn't frozen altogether, you just press long on the 'off' button and select 'power off'. When you switch on again, the device will soft reset.
I use PHM Reset. It does just what it says: soft reset! Of course, you can use only if the phone is not completely frozen but it's very helpful when your phone is becoming sluggish or other crappy behaviour we are familiar with...
