I received my phone yesterday and overall I am generally impressed by the device. My only real problem I have with is that some animations like the weather and the clock seem to be a bit laggy, especially when icons like wireless are flashing. I have installed Chainfire's driver which has improved most things however I still get a lag on the clock and weather. Any ideas on what is causing this or is it normal. I have also upgraded from the T-Mobile 1.43 ROM to 1.48.

Has anyone else had problems with this device locking up / running very slow? It only seems to happen when I launch a new app, but it doesn't seem to depend on which app it is. The device just has a go-slow and usually needs a soft-reset. Opening they keyboard does not rotate the screen any more, but does draw some pretty weird icons on the side of the screen ;-)
Interested to hear other people's experiences before I start digging to try and discover the cause.
Thanks
Daern
Mine seems to be running pretty well. Occasionally it'll slow down a little but not enough to affect running apps etc. I've not really had any more than a one second delay with screen rotation. Have you got the O2 Active UI installed?

Nope. It was awful with O2Active installed (as usual). Mine is configured in "basic" mode.
wizrd running slow
You have an 200Mhz device running WM2005.The ROM is not a final one ... improvments for o2 active are still made ( by the way the software is for unexperienced users mostly if you carefully read the setup panel)...So you just have to wait for the entire software to get improved
hi,
does GfxBoost v1.1 work on the x1.
0.7 seemed to install but did not noticed difference
1.0 made my handset go wrong so had to uninstall
anyone know the result for 1.1?
Hi,
I have had it installed for a week, so far I could detect no problem (maybe my X1 does consume battery faster, but I haven't investigated yet if it comes from this program).
I did notice some improvement in opera and WM6.5 which are just smoother, but do not expect your X1 to turn into an iphone
well... maybe it does work on some roms, however on my r2a generic uk it's enabled and active, but no visible gain in performance. xtract looks and feels the same (fast and fluent even with music on), nothing changed with opera and mobile shell 3 fells bit more choppy. uninstaled that and xperia is even smoother than with it, so...
I am not saying that this doesn't work. the truth is that I cannot notice it.
not sure if im doing something wrong. but i have tested this in itje final 7 and valkryie v1 and in both roms i gain speed in touchflo and album if i disable it. i keep it disabled all the time now. the animations are clearly choppier when enabled
are there any hard numbers that shows any level of improvement
so now we have 3 kinds of accelerators that are not included in stock (and most cooked) ROMs:
-openVG
-ATI openGL drivers
-GfxBoost
TBH, i dont see any noticeable performance increase in any of them. as mentioned above, gfxBoost makes certain things chippier when its enabled
we really need the opnion of an expert here to shed more light on this subject
I recently upgraded to the 1.48 ROM, initial reactions were positive - does seem a bit snapier, SMS is sent quicker, there is noticeably less hissing on phone calls - overall seemed better. Then I tried to use GPS, I always allowed Windows to manage it on this and other devices and it worked very well then and in ROM 1.43 but not after upgrade. Under All Settings - System - External GPS I've always been able to assign a COM other than "none" under the Hardware tab. After the upgrade when I change the value and hit ok, when I return it has been reset to none. Even though Windows is managing GPS automatically (box is checked) no programs can access GPS. Has anyone else experienced this as well - is there any fix?
Thanks
-edit -
A soft reset allowed windows to automatically manage the GPS??? and it does work, though still cannot make changes to external GPS under hardware tab - does not matter though since it does work!
Thread modified - I think it would better serve the community to share experience with users who want to upgrade ROM to 1.48. HTC's upgrade description is cryptic and vague - some wonder if it's worth the upgrade.
I'm pretty sure that it would happen also with 1.43/1.61.
I'd suggest you have a look using HTCs GPS tool (dont have link for it) or any other COM-sniffing application. If that comes out negative, try hardreset or reflash rom.
Just my two cents.
Havent read any other posts about this and it seems that many have flashed 1.48/1.61/2.01 roms and no complaints about about the GPS.
Thanks for the help guys, got it sorted. I changed the thread to help those who want to upgrade.
Some user experiences with the new ROM...
- As mentioned, cannot change hardware GPS com port, though it does work when managed automantically.
- No changes noticed with Opera, it works just the same as before, I don't see any difference in switching between landscape and portrait as HTC claims.
- The new radio brings an improvement, there is noticably less static and hiss before a call is connected, the call clarity is slightly improved as well.
- The home tab in sense operates more fluidly, the clock animation is not as jumpy and weather animation is smoother. overall program swithcing / use seems as good as before (maybe SLIGHTLY better - you'd really have to concentrate to notice any of this snappier preformance)
- SMS messages are sent and recieved MUCH faster than before, when I send an SMS it takes only a few seconds for the receipient to recieve - this is WITHOUT the SMS hotfix.
Will post again with any other comments including any noticed changes to battery life. Hope this helps those who were confused by HTC's ambiguous description of what this new ROM brought to the table.
This morning Kies was telling me my device could not be updated, but I happened to check this evening and a new notification appeared saying that the JM1 update mentioned in a previous thread was now available - I was on the stock O2UK JF1.
Having installed the update, the GPS button in the pull down task bar is a new thing plus the new Samsung task manager, although these have been mentioned in the other thread already. The task amanger shows how much RAM you've used out of 326MB, but early signs are that it's no more efficient in freeing up RAM than was the situation on the JF1 ROM I had previously. Still I'll see how things go tomorrow. Having said that, the task manager widget is quite nice.
The Samsung App store also seems to be working now, as it kept giving me error messages on the old ROM. There's a 70MB full and free version of Asphalt on there which I'll download tomorrow. Another definite improvement is the music player, which previously couldn't handle the 1000+ artists in my digital audio collection. In fact it used to force itself to close when I pressed 'Artists' before. Now it's listing all the artists and grouping all albums/tunes for each artist correctly.
Apart from that I haven't noticed anything else so far, although the phone's reception might be a bit better, but I can't confirm that yet.
hi are you on O2 contract?

Yeah, I'm on a full 24 month contract with O2UK, and I bought the phone directly from them.
As an update to what I said at the start of this thread, I now realise I had test mode activated when I used Kies to update my phone, so this may not have been an 'official' O2UK update after all. It seems test mode doesn't turn off when you close Kies: CTRL+U+P is in fact an on/off toggle for test mode. Nonetheless, the JM1 update I got has all the O2 stuff I had before and settings, so I would definitely recommend it to anyone who's on an O2UK contract with an older stock ROM as it's better for all the reasons I mentioned previously.
I've also noticed that the new stock task manager in the Kies JM1 update doesn't seem to allow the phone's RAM to drop below approx 50MB (or 275MB/326MB). On my previous stock JF1, Advance Task Killer often showed that free RAM had got down to approx 30MB on some occasions, which was when things really started getting noticeably laggy. Now when I leave open 10+ applications, the RAM used won't go beyond 275MB/326MB, which suggests the system is closing background application/services automatically at around this mark to maintain performance. I might be wrong on this, but so far I haven't seen the same lag issues I had before with black screens lasting 5 seconds or more, but others might need to confirm that
The only thing I don't quite understand is what the coloured green/yellow bar is for in the new Program Monitor widget, although the active applications count in this widget is really useful.
Coloured yellow/green bar shows that there is no battery draining app is running at the moment. It will change the colour if there is one or more battery hungry apps are running.

Same here, mine came up with the "this phone cannot be updated" crap. I'm still going to install the lag fix though, it made a huge difference with the jf1 firmware.
I keep reading all the posts here and elsewhere referencing people's overwhelmingly positive experiences with the touchwiz update. Since applying the update, however, my battery life has gotten much worse, even though I have the same homescreen setup (ie., I'm not using any of Samsung's widgets. I also would say the experience has gotten laggier and less smooth. There is often a "catch " at the pivot point between homescreen, very momentary, and but not there for me before the update. The browser too force closes for me often, unless I regularly remember to open up Samsung's task manager and clear memory. I like some features of the update, like being able to type in the forums without lag, for instance, the but wish these other issues hadn't come along with it.

Sounds like something went wrong with your update imo. A lot of people are happy about TW not for the UI changes etc, but for the performance and stability improvements.
Have you tried a factory reset?
Hello doesn't know if it can be helpfull...but i experienced a laggy TW...and in order to try chrome bookmark to sync i tried to delete browser cache and data, and to stop it. The i relaunch the browser...and reconfigure my account for bookmarks sync...now there is a new folder called chrome, but still no my chrome bookmarks...but..tadaaa...i have no more lag on my honeycomb desk, and even the application draxer are very smooth...i was nearly decided to make a full wipe ...but right now i'm not, and i'm really happy with the smoothy interface of honeycomb...i will post a video for new features on my blog so you will be able to see if you consider it laggy or not, but i don't. It's in french but, well videos are videos ;-)

Figured out some things, much happier camper now
Just to update:. I did a factory reset which didn't seem to make all that much difference, but in looking through the settings I noticed the gps was set continuously on and the screen brightness was not on auto. Turned off the gps and set brightness to auto and battery life has more than doubled now. A huge improvement, and and the "catch" when pivoting between homescreens seems gone too. Don't knowing it was any one of those things by themselves or the combination, and but I feel much better about the update now.
I keep the display at what looks like about 30%. I always leave GPS on. My battery life is fine.
However, on the first day after the download it went down much quicker than normal. I believe that's because it was a Saturday and I was spending a lot of time lurking around TouchWiz. Since then I see no difference than before TW.
My battery used to last a couple of days with light usage. Now im lucky if i can get 6 hours. I even wiped battery stats but still battery life is terrible....
UPDATE
I fully charged my battery, reset battery stats in recovery, unplugged and rebooted. After 10 minutes im at 78% battery. I hope its not pershoots new kernel thats causing it....
no issues here; try a reflash
Yeah i went ahead and did that. Went to stock, updated to 3.1, updated to google movie, and now when I go to update, it says no update available. Is the touchwiz update fully available yet? I would rather get the ota instead of a rom version...
