PC not recognizing phone. - HD2 General

Hi guys, Recently for no reason my phone and PC cant see each other in activesync mode, it does however see it when its set to disk mode but otherwise nothing happens.
What could be causing this? its driving me insane!

Not sure if you are using a 3rd party firewall, but if so try again but with your firewall off (or in my case unistalled)
I was using Outpost firewall (great firewall), but never managed to get it to work/sync with any of my HTC phones when it was installed!

Well thats the thing, it was working fine, i didn't change anything but active sync just doesnt recognize it, ive tried uninstalling it, using different USB ports, disabling antivirus, reinstalling activesync and checking all the settings on the phone to no avail, might to a hard reset and see if that works :-(

Active Sync Problem after I-Mate Upgrade

I can't perform a sync. My computer recognizes the new device, but active sync just hangs showing a window stating: "retrieving settings..."
Any ideas as to how to fix active sync?
I already tried uninstalling active sync and performing a hard reset on my Exec, but it still end up with active sync hanging.
I have the same Problem and no Idea what to do...
OK, I was able to sync using BT. Now when I connect my Exec using USB, my Exec still won't sync via USB. I already checked the settings if I had the check mark on syncing via USB and I do. I can access my SD Card via USB, but it still won't allow me to sync via USB. Any ideas?
I know I am missing a setting somewhere. Hmmmmm.
OK, another update guys, it seems that active sync allows me to install programs without syncing, so to me this is no hindrance, as long as I can access my SD Card and install applications via USB, it's good enough for me. I guess if I want to sync I just have to use BT. But any solutions on your part is also appreciated.
Hi,
somteimes that's an issue related to firewall or antivirus.
If you're using Sygate or Kaspersky that could happen.
If you use Sygate there's a file in Buzzdev.net to solve the issue.
Hope to be helpful

I don't use Sygate. I do have System Suite with NetDefense Firewall. I'll try and disable my firewall to check if that is what causing me to unable to sync via USB. But how come it allows me to access my SD Card and insatall applications if my firewall is blocking active sync. Shouldn't it be blocking all functions of active sync? I'll post my update once I disable my firewall. Thanks durius.
Hi, it's not the firewall.
BUMP,
I still have this problem.
I had the same problem
1. no Activesync exept the first time
2 no Mailsynch via wireless
3 MSN messenger wouldn't log in
I did a hard reset with the same rom and voila
everything works now.
I jus deleted the wireless remove cab from the xtended rom before the hard reset as i wanted the Wireless Today item back
I also had problems with new Rom , installed ActiveSync 4.1 ,big mistake. Rolled back to 4.0 and now all perfect.

Hi,
I had same problem too after installing i-mate ROM - Activesync just kept saying 'Connecting...'. I went into Device Manager, disabled the Windows Mobile card within network cards, checked for updated drivers (it didn't find any so assume this step is irrelevant) then re-enabled the network card and it all worked like a dream.
Hope this helps.
Steve
I had this same issue, drove me crazy. I managed to fix it, but I'm about to be really unhelpful as I din't fix it in a particularly scientific manner.
I was so annoyed that I did the following 3 things, in this order
1 - Went to Device Manager and unistalled Windows Mobile device #X
2 - Uninstalled Activesync build 4.1.41xx, went into \windows\system32 and deleted rapi.dll, then reinstalled version 4.1.40xx something or other
3 - Turned off my firewall
I then managed to sync the phone again, turned the firewall back on. It now syncs fine, but I do still get the msg on the PPC saying "unable to get an IP address"
I sync with two PCs, my home machine and a work laptop. I don't know if maybe I was running two different versions of activesync, but I was able to sync with the laptop even while this was going on.
From what stevegiraffes says, it appears that it was actually step 1 above that fixed the issue. The strange thing was that my PPC device name had been M5000, but after managing to get the damn thing to sync at home it became WM_Ownername again; minor point.
Very odd, but major panic now over
Happy Pi day everyone!

I stand corrected. It was Windows Firewall that caused the problem. I tried disabling both my firewalls again and it worked. Thanks!
Thanks to everyone that responded. I tried all your suggestions, but in the end it was the FIREWALL after all. I am glad this was over.

Active sync problems!!!!!! (with pics)

was going to upgrade to the new exec ROM today.... except Active sync decided to fail on me.
I'm running 4.1 on windows XP (SP2) and when i connect the exec via USB NOTHING happens at all, the little icon doesn't even go green or anything. i just get two "bum" and "bum, bum" sounds lol
However the LED on the exec does turn orange (the charging mode colour)
any help is much appreciated on how i can resolve this issue.
thanks everyone!
Check your ActiveSync connection settings (file -> connection settings) and make sure USB is enabled.
done that, and it is ticked....
i have also tried reinstaling active sync....
Turn OFF all your firewalls and try it again.
done that too........ followed the whole trouble shooting thing aswell... all in vain...
in the device manger from my desktop, under "network adaptors", "windows-mobile based device" is showed with a yellow circle with an explanation in it. it then states uunder "properties"
"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28 )
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."
The usual reason that ActiveSync has is the firewall. I pull out my WiFi card, disable the firewall, then connect the cable.
Once the unit has been sync'd I can put the firewall back on and get back on the net.
YMMV.
If your firewall wasn't blocking it before, then it might not be this.
quck update. when i coneect now, in the task bar a little bubble apears stating "new hardware found"
then a box appears with "Found new hardware wizard" on it.
i have a similar problem:
when i connect, activesync does recognize and attempt to sync, but when it starts 'looking for changes', it never ends! it keeps on 'looking for changes' for ever, or at least VERY LONG, ending up with an error on my PC saying that synchronisation failed and that i should restart my desktop computer, which doesn't solve thw problem..
with my blueangel i never had this problem, although i was using activesync 4.1 already back then too..
ideas, anyone?

i used to get that problem before, it seemed to resolve itself :?
but now nothing happens, not even the swirly motion of the active sync in the taskbar, the LEDs on my exec is the only thing that lets me know its connected.
This is exactly what I have on my computer too. The only solution for me is to turn OFF windows firewall and all other firewalls I have, then active sync works as it should be. You have to remember to turn OFF all firewalls BEFORE connecting your Universal via USB for it to work. It will not work if you connect the Universal first then shut OFF all firewalls. It has to be the other way around.
Ok i have a simlar problem, but let me explain first:
I upgraded to winmobile2005 on my Himalaya which went well and without a hitch. I was on my parents pc and i active sync' without a problem.
Ive now come home, and i cant sync. It sits there saying 'Retreaving settings...' and just doesnt go any further. Ive soft and hard reset device, checked firewalls etc - no luck.
It has identified the old active sync name, but nothing else. I can explore the device before it crashes after looking though about 5 directories/downloading large files.
How can i remove the old sync information from the device (as i guess this is the issue)?
Cheers for your time,
Sam.
have you tried to delete that partnership?

If you already "Hard Reset" your device, then whatever information on it has already been erased clean to factory defaults, unless you are restoring from a backup program after the hard reset. Then I suggest you restore to a file prior to performing an active sync connection to your parents' computer.

Well yes it used to do that on WM2003, but it doesnt on this version. And im not using a backup program. Unless the program auto-saves to my storage card in some way? In which case whats the active sync file im looking for?

Regarding Firewall
I've posted this earlier in another thread, but I guess it is not bad to post here again
Regards
------------
Thank you for your suggestion, I would however say this "Be Careful", I would NOT turn firewall completely if I were you guys, IF I have doubt that it is due to firewall, I would turn the firewall ONLY for the Universal interface
pls find the steps here
1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Security Center
5. Windows Firewall icon in the lower part
6. Advanced Tab
7. UNCHECK the Network Connection that represents your Universal
Note,
A. To be sure that you are not disableing firewall on the wrong interface, please rename your Local Area Connection (x) to your Pocket PC device, so then you would know for sure you are dealing with the RIGHT connection (I use SPV M5000), renaming it is very easy, right click on the connection in the NETWORK CONNECTIONS, then RENAME
B. Disabling firewall for all connections IS VERY DANGEROUS especially IF YOU ARE ONLINE or ON A NETWORK, you might get SERIOUS problems, from viral infections to Hacking (only God knows)
C. The above applies only for WINDOWS FIREWALL on Windows XP Service Pack 2, I have no idea how to do it with Zone Alarm or ANY other software as I dont use any, but I think there must be someway to do so.
All the best & good luck.

Yes, both locations have v 4.1 installed. Does no one know of the files i should be removing on my PDA then? :S
Blofse : there are no files to remove - you've already said that you've done a hard reset and returned it to the factory settings which removes all user data and therefore, the device has nothing on it at all about partnerships with computers - i would suggest looking elsewhere for a resolution.
Budo : I think your problem is the yellow symbol on the network card entry in device manager. In this case, I would unplug the exec, righht click on this network card entry and click remove. Then uninstall activesync. Make sure the actve sync folder is deleted and check the windows\system32 folder for files called rapi.dll and ceutil.dll (these might have gone during the uninstall, but check anyway).
Reboot your PC and reinstall activesync before plugging in your exec again.
Hopefully, this will sort you out but post back if it doesn't.
Cheers,
Smiffy.

activesync icon just rotating

my universal and my PC cannot connect through USB, the green icon just keeps rotating. through Bluetooth it's OK. I've upgraded from AS 4.1 to 4.2 beta, the error is the same.. What should I modify? Bluetooth is not the perfect solution, because I'm not using it (i don't have headset or anything)
Remove, disable, kill all firewall that you have installed on your PC.
If it works then, then you need to open some ports in the firewall to let the universal to connect to ActiveSync.

I've already disabled the built-in firewall (I haven't installed another firewall). I've installed this XP today morning  (replacing my Vista, party because under Vista the pda-outlook sync didn't work completely.)
In that case, try this...
On your PDA, go to ActiveSync -> Options, remove your PC from the list and start a new partnership with the PC...
seems to be a bug in WM5.. happens to me sometimes... activesync will need to be killed by taskmanager and restarted... btw, this happens more often in OTA mode, rather than connected to my PC.
happened to me for the 2nd time.
tried everything, starting by disabling firewall, installing ac4.2beta, cleaning up activesync profile on pc and ppc.
is there a solution for this bug without hardresetting my ppc?
last time i hardresetted my pcc active sync worked perfectly again.
One of my big complaints about the WM5 on my Uni is AS 4.x. I don't believe it offers any improvements over 3.8 and in most cases is a lot worse.
As chatbox suggested, this is probably your firewall. I do get this with my setup and I'm completely on top of my system. When I get this I just use the wire *shrug*
I'm experiencing the same thing.
My first thought was firewall, so I started digging through it (I have McAffee). Activesync was set up as approved, so I poked around, found nothing that should be blocking it, and just to be sure, shut down the whole firewall (and double-checked that Windows Firewall was still off).
It still doesn't sync. Not sure at this point what to do; I'm out of firewalls to kill.

HD2, windows 7 64 bit & WMDC 6.1

Hi,
I am in the UK, i just bought my HTC leo (known as HD2 here), reading through the instructions i was guided to install WMDC which i did, i had not plugged in the phone at this point and one error was thrown up saying device not connected which was easily explainable, so now i connect the phone expecting WMDC to jump up, it doesnt and never has, now i am no novice to these things and i have been in this forum a few years ago with another phone so i am well versed on searching for answers to my problem before making posts, so far all i can find on the problem is people reporting not being able to sync using office, this is not my problem as i cant even get the phone to sync with WMDC, i have tried other suggestions such as ...
registry key in question:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Svchost\WindowsMobile
- Right click -> Permissions -> Advanced
- Took owner ship of the registry key
- Gave the Users group Full Control.
Then in device manager:
- Uninstalled my Microsoft Mobile Remote Adapter
- Scan hardware changes
and then it installed properly and am able to sync again
but to no avail, i have uninstalled and reinstalled with the phone connected and unconnected, my pc seems to find the device but i dont think it is reporting it right, in device & printers the phone is seen as 'generic serial', when i do a properties on this it is said to be a 'pocketPC usb sync', when i connect and disconnect it does appear in the device manager under mobile devices, also if i just leave the phone, when the screen goes blank the device disappears from the device manager, i have tried uninstalling it from device manager and also updating drivers but it keeps saying the best driver for the device are installed, i have included some pictures and i am tearing my hair out over this, i bought this phone to replace my iphone but i am not to pleased yet.
Thanks.
Have you opened wmdc and setup a partnership?
Have you tried going into Settings->Connections->USB To PC and uncheck "enable faster synchronization"?
What ROM are you on, btw, Cooked or Stock? and what version?

yes i did the disabling of fast sync, this is on stock rom out of the box its spl-1.42.0000, my plan was to install a cooked rom but i cant even get the phone to sync so i cant even do that to see if it will remedy the situation.
You can always install a cooked ROM as long as you can get to the bootloader...
Go to the bootloader...
Flash HSPL...
Use Task29 (Hex modified RUU.exe)
Flash your Cooked ROM of choice
I'm out of possible fixes for your sync problem though... I usually just uncheck "enable faster sync" and all is fine...
try this, if you haven't... as a last resort..
Uninstall WMDC
Reboot
Install WMDC
Reboot
Connect HD2 before your PC boots (with "enable faster sync" unchecked)
worth a try
no luck...this is highly frustrating
any firewalls up and running? I'm on Win 7 x64 and WMDC 6.1 is playing fine with Outpost Firewall

Try to disable your antivirus. I use Kaspersky and I have same problem if I don't disable antivirus.
Disabled antivirus and firewall...strange thing is..if i uninstall it from device manager, when i reinstall it with fast sync enabled on phone it installs as mobile remote adaptor or something like that, if i reinstall with fast sync disabled it installs as pocketpc usb sync
What I did with my HD2 and W7 64-bit was just turn it on and plug it in! Windows downloaded, installed and configured WMDC automatically so I didn't have to do a thing!

Thanks for that...nothing like having salt rubbed in to the wounds lol... thats exactly what i did but not so lucky...anyhow...i just uninstalled the thing again for numpteenth time and scanned for hardware changes and went out the room...when i come back in it was alive...dont know what i did that was different though, i will renable my AV and firewall and see if it was that.
Thanks to everyone for your help
Didn't mean to sound so smart-arse-ish - I just always plug things into W7 and only if they can't get something working do I go driver hunting!
No i know you wasnt, i wasnt offended at all...its so nice to be able to just plug things in though, with windows 7 its been a breeze and this is the first time i have had trouble, hopefully thats the end of that problem and i can get going with some cooked roms....anything you can recommend ? seem to be so many, whats the most popular ?
Personally, take a look at the one in my sig - new version of it is out later this evening and its a great ROM. Gets rid of all the crapware no one ever uses...
Other than that, take a look at Duttys or Miri's ROMs - but the newest version are only on HTCPedia
Well...that lasted all of 3 minutes !....now its not connecting again...no logic what so ever
Right...seems it may have been the USB port, i was initially trying 2 ports, one was a front panel usb port which is connected via a pin header on the mobo, the second one was an extension lead to the back mobo mounted usb port which is usb3...so as a last straw i thought i would try the usb hub i have connected to the other onboard usb port which is usb 2..the hub is powered so i am left wondering if that was the issue.

Usb tethering and 64bit w7

Allright everyone, I'm in serious need of help now becouse I just can't get the usb tethering to work with 64bit w7 and my DHD. So far i've tried several other (RNDIS) drivers including the one that comes with HTC sync, generic one and pdanet driver... So far none of them have worked.
When trying to hook DHD to computer and selecting usb tethering as connection of choice i briefly see htc rndis device popping up in network adapters page but it disappears allmost immediatly without any pop-ups about errors or anything. The only way I have managed to get tethering work on my setup is to use pdanet but I'd rather use it like it was supposed to work, as in without any third-party programs in between...
So please, I'm getting desperate since I've been trying to figure this out for 2 days already and I'm running out of ideas and nerves....
the problem may caused by the firewall u using. i use win 7 x64 too. i had issues with nod/nis firewall. disabling it solves the problem but bring up the risk of connecting to the internet without the protection. since im not an advanced user in configuring firewalls i dont have better solution but im sure it exists. try to search google in the topic of share a computers internet access to another, firewall settings
hope this helps a bit
