Hi All,
I have a tough one to solve for a colleague..
He is wanting to use his HTC Snap (WM6.1) Data connection to allow his laptop to connect to office VPN(VPN client is on laptop).
ICS works great via USB for internet access only. The VPN subnet is the same 192.168.0.x subnet as the default IP assigned via ICS.
I changed the ICS DHCP assigned IP range to 192.168.10.x (via reg hacks) and internet works ok from Laptop still.
VPN connects successfully from laptop (Netgear Prosafe VPN client) and stays connected only I cannot access, ping or anything on the 192.168.0.x subnet through the VPN..
Internet continues to be accessible from laptop whilst VPN is 'connected'.
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance.

Anyone get these two to play nice together?
Details:
Cisco PIX 501e at the office
WM6 3g phone (HTC TyTn II)
vista/xp laptop (working properly on either would be great right now )
VPN setup on the pix is, i believe, fine. I could be wrong tho, i set it up by trial and error + reading the manual having never even touched a cisco device before
It works tho and has worked flawlessly for months now with Cisco VPN Client on XP or Vista machines.
Old phone was WM5 and used the clunky and annoying modem emulator to enable a laptop to use it to connect to intarwebs in the middle of nowhere, this was great and after faffing about getting it setup worked fine (required you to be logged in as administrator on vista tho :\ and not just a user account with admin privileges, actually administrator. Annoying.)
New phone is WM6 and uses internet sharing to connect with a laptop, this is a much better solution with no faffing about in vista and XP
Problem: Cisco VPN client connects to the pix through Internet Sharing on the phone just fine, however no traffic gets through.
Cannot ping, web browse, dns, rdc or anything to the network at work. Tried with Cisco VPN client v4.6.00.0049 and v5.0.01.0600 on XP and v5.0.00.0340 on Vista, none work.
This sucks
Now, i know its not a problem with the laptop or the vpn software on the laptop as these work fine when connected over ethernet or wifi.
Its not a problem with the phone's 3g connection, i installed a trial of bluefire vpn client onto it and that connects to the vpn and works just fine when the phone is in standalone mode.
However for the life of me i cannot get the two bloody things to work together.
Plz halp
Hi,
Often times, the inability to ping a local host (computers or other connected devices e.g router, hardware firewall, printer, PPC, etc) or hosts, is due to the firewall not allowing traffic through the router. It can also be that the hosts are incorrectly configured to be on different subnets, even though they are local, as in your own case.
Proceed as follows to troubleshoot:
a). Ping the router
Note that the idea is to see if we can establish communication with the router or hardware firewall such as the Pix.
At command prompt (c:\>) type:
ping 192.168.0.1
(each router manufacturer uses a different default internal IP address for its router) - the one above is for a Netgear or D-Link router - for a Cisco router, you would need to know the Cisco IOS command - see your router manual for this.
b). ipconfig /all
Note: there is a space before the forwardslash.
When it returns the parameters, check to see that the IP addresses are all on the same subnet.
This is crucially important for you to take good note. If you are not able to ping a local host or gateway, it's most likely due to this.
c). Ping the Pix Firewall (using its IP address)
d). Ping a remote IP address, e.g. your ISP's gateway or DNS server
e). Is there traffic? If it returns successfully, then ping the other hosts, including the VPN client.
Pix Firewall
Check to see that the Access Control List is configured correctly by ensuring that the IP addresses of the connected hosts have been entered, with the relevant access rights.
Router
Log on to the router. Whilst there:
Ensure that the hosts (computers, etc) are all on the SAME subnet. If they are on different subnets, you must correct the IP addresses to reflect that they are on the same subnet.
Note: If you do really want them to be on different subnets, then you need to use a default gateway.
Hope this helps.

Hi Folks,
I am having trouble trying to access any SMB shares when connected through 3G(or 2G) to my VPN. The VPN connects, and using VXUtils I can see that Host names resolve correctly to IP for my network, I can ping by host name and IP to my devices and I can do an ip range scan and it finds all the hosts connected to my home network. I can use RDP to connect to my XP machine through host name (With or without using pocket hosts) and I can view the setting html pages of my router through internal ip's but I cannot access any shares! Just to make matters a little more complex, if I connect through a wireless network (using the VPN) everything works fine (assuming it is allowing pptp passthrough)!!!
Oh yes, and the VPN itself and forwarding on the router etc is all fine as laptops and desktops can connect remotely (and of course so can I).
It is a Vario 3 on T-mobile.
Any ideas anyone? All I want to do is be able to access my SMB file shares (on a mybook world edition) whilst out on the move.
Thanks.
Hi, i need help about connecting my Pocket PC and using ICS

Can someone help me with this?
I do the same thing as my curent internet is from a usb modem
so i turn on internet sharing on my pc
and set my phone's ip to be on the same subnet in my case 192.168.0.X
set my gateway to the ip on the pc in my case 192.168.0.1
set my dns to the same dns the pc use
if you don't know your dns
you can get it from a console and typing
iconfig /all
on your pc
tnx but i tried that and then i don't have internet on pc1 because of the mac of it is my password to the internet provider
can i somehow fis that?
ok i set my Local connection1(internet) to ics to the local connection 4 (activesync created and it made its address 192.168.0.1)
this seems to be normal but now my active sync can not connect to my device
and my laptop1 ip must be 10.10.16.79
I am able to connect to my home router's PPTP VPN server from my Android phone's PPTP client. I can even see my remote LAN devices; and, my remote LAN devices can see my mobile phone on the LAN.
The problem is when I connect my phone to wifi Internet.... BEFORE connecting to my PPTP VPN server... I can't see the remote LAN; and, the remote LAN can't see my phone. The only thing I can do successfully is get a new public IP (my home Internet public IP).
What can I do so that I am able to use my local wifi Internet connection to connect to my VPN at home?
It might be a route problem.
When you connect to WiFi, some static routes are pushed to your phone.
Those routes might not be refreshed or conserved after a VPN connection.
If it is not a route problem it's a default gateway problem.
Yes, that's what I suspected. I already tried adding routes; specifying the gateway via command-line; however, I didn't have any luck; probably because I didn't know exactly what I was doing.
One thing I noticed; when I use my wifi internet hotspot, I noticed that it gets a private WAN IP.. 10.x.x.x; which then NATs to a temporary real public IP; which no connections instigated from the outside world can make it So, even if I do port-fowarding on my wifi hotspot router, it doesnt help any since the incoming connections are stopped dead in their tracks.
I'm using PPTP VPN; which depends on a TCP port 1723. If that TCP connection is instigated from my remote VPN server into my mobile Internet wifi hotspot based LAN devices, it wouldn't work for the same reason explained above. I didn't see a PPTP VPN passthrough option for my wifi hotspot; only for IPSEC; which I dont have a server for. I'm guessing that if I had a real-world public WAN IP for my mobile Internet hotspot, maybe I wouldn't have this problem for PPTP.??

First, are you talking about a free internet hotspot or from private internet hotspot (@work for example) ?
you'll never gonna get a public IP from your internet hotspot. 1-public-IP-for-1-client on a hotspot is just inconceivable, due to IPv4 exhaustion.
I think you only have to try to do port forwarding on your hotspot.
Your assumption "it doesnt help any since the incoming connections are stopped dead in their tracks" is wrong I guess. If your hotspot has a built-in firewall, it might be stateful. As you are initiating a connection to your server, the returned traffic flow shall be allowed.
If it doesn't work after port forwarding, try to look at firewall rules on your hotspot router.
Problem resolved.
My Verizon wireless hotspot (890L) doesn't support PPTP passthough. More specifically, PPTP's routing protocol: GRE (value 47). Verizon does offer another wireless hotspot that does offer support for PPTP; at least via a firmware update.
This issue actually pushed me to install and configure OpenVPN server on my router; instead of using the existing PPTP server which I already had. OpenVPN is fantastic is working through firewalls.
Great !
Yes, OpenVPN is a delight.
me too
I have the same problem,
but I usually change another ROM until there's no bugs

have you tried to configure the wi-fi gateway to match your vpn router?
settings / wireless & networks / wi-fi / long press your vpn connection / modify network / scroll to show advanced options / select static ip /scroll down to gateway and put the gate address in / save
I run a vpn through a 2 router setup, and even though my phone connects to the vpn router, its gateway by default is always the non-vpn router. changing the gateway to the vpn router allows the vpn to connect to the phone. you can verify the vpn connection by going to ip-score.
That why i can't see my phone using wifi in VPN network..
cant connect if theres no mobile data or load
Hi please help ..when i have load i see its connected..but if i have no load its not connecting please ..anyone can explain this?

Please help me to fix this issue
I'm having issues trying to share my tethered connection with Windows 10 Internet connection sharing. This seems to work just fine on my 2 windows 7 machines. After I had set up ICS on windows 10, The correct IP address shows up with DNS information on my LAN, however It says it has no internet connection when tether is connected. Could this be a result of the using using Win-32 adapter? When I check the other devices on the network, they don't even seem to be getting an IP address. The LAN adapter has the default 192.168.1.1 and is connected to a network hub (not router).
