502 apps installed in my HTC Hero.
The phone runs absolutely flawlessly. Everyday.
I'm filling it up to see if/when it falls over. Then when Android 2 is released I will format and only install the apps I really want.... (about 495 of them )
As you can see from my sig, you don't need a lot of space at all for apps, not sure how much I've used but I think I could add another couple of hundred apps yet.
So what is your favorite app(s)?
Hmmmmmmmmm, there's a question.....
Appmanager
Atrackdog
Geobeagle
Hyperspace
Xgalaga
A world of photo
What the Doodle!
Ethereal Dialpad
Magic Marker
Ball
Audio Manager
More Icons Widget
Floating Images
Keepscreen
Sportypal
To name a few!

You know that is cheating right? Using Apps2SD on a 32GB memorycard you probably can download way more than 700 apps... try doing that WITHOUT using Apps2SD...
Apps2SD force closes on me 24/7
How many apps can you get on a stock htc hero and what is the available user memory

I'm not cheating, it's 'tweaking'.
I only have an 8Gb SD Card and only 700Mb is Ext3.
It's like having a car and playing eith the engine a little. Nothing wring with that.
I think with stock Rom, I would get around 200 apps, however it does actually depend on the app size ultimately.
Ok thanks what is the internal memory available on a stock rom like the g1 has 74mb

Stock memory is around 170Mb but the Hero runs a lot different to the G1.
It seems to keep the same speed no matter how full it is.
However my G1 used to slow terribly once it started to get fully loaded.
can you check the total size of your /data/app folder, and divide that by the number of files in it?
for example:
Code:
adb shell du -hs /data/app/
123.8M /data/app/
adb shell ls -1 /data/app/ | wc -l
124
Data/app is:
342 Mb
507 files.
Interestingly, all of the protected apps are .zips in the folder.......

about 15 apps, Use them daily, no issues, Gumbo 1.5c bare
at least 50, I've only had problems with things not holding their settings. Agenda Widget for example must have its calendars assigned after every reboot. I have had apps FC after mounting/unmounting my SD card on my computer, especially if the apps were running in the background (sleeping) when I connected to the computer.
I'm running Pancake 0.1.
What is the point of running from SD? Is it faster or something?
i was running apps2sd for a while, just because when you flash a rom (that supports it) all your apps are back, so you don't have to re-install them.
but now i just adb pull my app folder then push it back after the flash. it only takes a second i think the apps run better from the main memory anyway.
i only use around 15-20 apps so it's not like i'm going to run outta space on my phone memory.
apps2sd was really made for the g1, (i think) they have a tiny amount of storage memory. we have 160 MB so that's a ton of apps.
in my opinion its unnecessary unless you start to run out of space
I use it and notice a definite difference. I usually run about 30 3rd party apps. I am currently on the 2.1 Eris-based ROM.

+2. Can you possibly tell me how to pull the entire app folder? What is the location? I'm a bit of newb as well. ._. Please and thank you!
To pull the entire app directory with adb, you would issue a command like:
Code:
adb pull /data/app/ c:\backup
I also use apps2sd, with about 25 apps right now. Came in really handy when I had to get a replacement phone. I kept my SD card, was on vacation, downloaded the SDK and a ROM to my laptop, inserted the SD card and all of my apps were there. It's not entirely necessary, especially if you aren't installing that many apps, but if you like it you like it. Note, it may become more necessary with the 2.1 builds, as they tend to be larger than the 1.5 builds.
My I9000 is very laggy. Not always, just most of the time.
Closing com.sec.android.app.samsungapps.una & Daily Briefings with TasKiller gets me back around 30 MB, available memory now back around 60MB & phone now useable.
I've found a couple of samsung apps in system/app, SamsungWidget_WeatherClock.apk is 8.9MB, I think that's the culprit. How do I stop it running? Do I just delete it? (I'd probably copy it to the SD card & backup just in case.)
Are there any others i should get rid of/prevent from starting?

I use LauncherPro so I don't (can't) use any Samsung Widgets. However, I was using touchwiz for a while, I didn't have many memory issues with it. If the widget is running you can just click and hold the widget and move it to the trash, you don't need to back it up (it'll still be installed). There are many other things running that the Samsung TaskKiller doesn't pick up, that said, Android from what I read and see myself doesn't need much more than 30-50mb free at any time (though when I'm going to start surfing and doing a lot of activity I do try to free up around 150mb, just incase) and if you happen to push the boundary it'll free up memory for you.
If you want to be able to kill more tasks get ATK (advanced task killer).
After what ive read android dont page memory the way computers do, when it runs out of working memory. Reason is lack of memory i guess. But with several gigabytes of memory in internal storage, whats the problem?
With winmo I had to share working memory with installed software (if not installing on sd).

No lah. Ram & rom, different.
I've recently tried installing the Fruit Ninja (~14mb APK) and the Firefox Beta (~11mb apk) but both are saying I have not enough space to view/install the app.
I've cleared things out on my phone and have 37.5MB free on the internal storage.]
How can 11 or 14mb apps not be able to install with that much free memory?
Using HTC Legend stock 2.1
Not here to answer your question...because I don't know...but, that's happened to me as well. I do believe that I read somewhere that there is a certain threshold...and you may have reached it.
Try and go to application management, and see what apps takes most space and clear the cache. That helped me with my Galaxy S
Yeah I have, none really have any significant cache. The only way I could free up space is uninstalling more apps but I don't see why in would need to when in have that much free space already
Well the firefox beta after install is around 37mb. I thought it was 11mb until i installed. Idk about fruit ninja though.

damn well that would explain it.. how does 11mb extract out to ~40 mb though??
And all other apps listed including Dolphin browser and games etc only have up to a max of about 8mb in the Manage Applications list.
Is there more data to these apps than shown here, or why does the firefox need so much?

Simple, because the app need loads of data to fully operate. A few games requires a lot more that 8MB, for example FIFA10. If you need Firefox Beta real bad, here is some suggestion :
1. Uninstall some apps.
2. Root and get custom ROM with A2SD
Other than those 2 you're pretty much stuck.
Yeah but what i want to know is whether the size stated in the Manage Applications list is accurate, i.e. if I installed the firefox would it say ~40mb there, or lower like 8mb like other apps?
Because there's no reason it should be 5x or more larger than other apps which serve the same purpose and have similar features (Dolphin browser)
I can almost certainly be sure that because fruit ninja needs to unpack the apk before installing onto your phone's internal memory so 14MB is just the installed size, and the unpacking process takes up more internal storage space temporarily.
What I did was I kept uninstalling apps one by one at 35MB free space until I am able to install fruit ninja, and then re-installed those apps I removed.
anyhow I know that sounds stupid and I am on my way to root my legend
I'm having this issue also. Am trying to download Swype installer apk file to install Swype. I've cleared out the old Swype install, and Adobe flash, so now have 39 MB free on the phone, plus a few GB free on the sdcard.
I looked around and found that I do not have a download folder on my sdcard (/mnt/sdcard/download), so Dolphin browser was not able to save the apk file. I manually created the folder, and the download is working now.
Not sure if this fits your situation.

There's actually a very good reason for this. Most of the android browser are just different interfaces to the same engine. It's the one the default browser uses, and it's a part of the android system.
Firefox, on the other hand, uses its own engine, and that takes a lot of space. Opera Mobile also has a different engine and it's over 20 MB as well...
Hi everybody
I have been looking for an Android smartphone with a decent Camera (as I love taking pictures) and it seems I have found it in the Arc.
But one thing worries me, which is the 320 mb of internal memory which I have doubts of not being enough for my Arc to be Smart enough.
Can anybody help on this plz.
Thank you in advance
I have installed all the apps i need (abt 20 apps) and still have abt 200mb left. Also, I move games to SD card.
it's enough i have 150Mb free with all my apps. this was a little issue with Nexus. I even move some system apps to SD with titanium backup (you need root).
right now i have 58 apps installed (excl. system apps) and still have 147MB free. I have 9 games (not big games just casual) biggest games is taptap but after moving to sd save a lot.
If you able to fill up 320mb apps, your arc will be slowest phone in the world.
Given app2sd, most of new version apps support usage of 32gb SD card.

Thank you all
I am definitely going to have the Arc as soon as it is released here in the market (hopefully next week).
Thank you again
I have installed many apps (around 50 ~ 60) now still have 175MB.
Conditions: rooted the Arc, use Link2SD to move apps (cached, library, app) to your SD.
But you must get root to make 2nd ext2 partition and install Link2SD before can do this.

only some. There are a lot that still will not allow themselves to be moved to SD.
Rooting however can force them all over to SD with programs like Titanium backup which is mighty handy, particularly if you have a few gameloft games or big satnav apps

SD card partitioning
Can anyone please advise on what is the right way to partition the SD card?
I've gotten a Sandisk Class4 16Gb; googled around and thought I should partition FAT32/ext3/Linux-swap. But after doing so, the phone cannot see the card anymore.

I've rooted (using Gingerbreak) and installed apps2sd / link2sd. Basically my issue is the pathetic RAM available causing Arc to lag from time-to-time.
I've removed Telco's useless software and I'm still struggling with <100Mb available RAM all the time.

You mean there's 100Mb wasted RAM sitting around doing nothing all the time? Oh no!
As for the partitioning, you have to do it in the right order or the phone wont find the card. First create an ext2 partition for apps, then format the remainder as FAT32. I dont recommend ext3 or ext4 for an SD card, theyre overkill for a simple single user system like a phone, and their fancy features will actually slow everything down on an SD card. You dont need a linux swap partition at all (IIRC this was only useful with early versions of some custom roms on other phones).
Note that i havent any experience with apps2sd on the arc, only on other phones, so everything i just said may be garbage w.r.t. the arc, but i think it probably applies whatever the phone.
Also note that using apps2sd wont help your ram 'issues' at all.
Moving apps to SD
You can move some apps to SD card in Settings > Applications > Manage Applications.
You can use apps like Apps2SD and ZDBox to automate much of the process.
If your device supports debugging in Settings > Applications > Development, enable debugging, install the Android SDK, go to the tools directory connect your device to the computer using USB, and execute this command:
Code:
adb shell pm setInstallLocation 2
This will allow you to move even more apps to SD, although there may be side-effects for some apps, like random crashes or failure to launch. If you see some app not working as anticipated, move it back to main memory.
To be honest i cant really see the need for the old style apps2sd these days, Androids built-in version seems to be sufficient to me.
While not all apps support it yet, the majority of the ones i've got installed seem to (particularly the larger ones, which is key), and the number is increasing all the time.
Maybe if you just *have* to install 200+ apps it will become a problem. I'm struggling to think of 200 useful apps though.
I have about 100+ apps. All the apps that CAN go on SD are on SD. I normally have about 70MB, but it fluctuates between 50~70
I've to install games and storybooks for my child, and these alone add up to about 50 apps. Some of them are not SD-friendly at all.
I certainly don't recall installing many apps, but Titanium Backup says I've some 306 elements.
Arc has only 335Mb available... why did SE take away the precious 177Mb away??

No they don't. Those apps are located in /system on a different partition.
It has no effect on the space available to the user under normal circumstances. Not normal would be a root user moving files into that partition instead of their normal location.
Example would be converting a app into a system app.

Please help me understand how this phone works in terms of space then. It is supposed to be 16GB right? We get the phone and it has 12GB only (I am assuming it is because 4GB is being occupied by the system/stock rom). I installed a few apps and I now only have about 7GB left. I downloaded the system analyzer app and it tells me that TB is occupying a hell of a lot more space (due to an initial back-up I performed of apps and data) than what it was occupying on my previous phone. How do I go about loosing between 5 -6 GB of space?!?
Before removing the update of the Googlea apps and disabling them, current was up to 50MB, magazine was higher, etc...
I really do want to learn more about my phone, how best use my storage, save battery etc.
TIA guys
The phones have 16gb of nand in them.
Many things eat away at the so called 16gb. From the mb to bytes way of counting storage ( like any other drive) to the things you mentioned
The phone has a bit under 900 mb set aside for the ROM. Then there is the other stuff like radio / recovery bootloader etc that take up space / have a partition
The extra space you see being used by the apps you mentioned is just data. Currents for example downloads the stuff that you sync so it can be read offline. Its stored locally and takes up space. Same basic idea for the other apps you mentioned.
Once you update a system app also have two of the apks on the phone. One in /system/app and the other in /data/app. So the updated apk itself takes up a bit of space.
Think of it in simple computer terms. You have one 100gb hard drive that is spilt up into two partitions that you cant change ( got to pretend you can't change them for this). 20gb c partition for windows and 80gb left over for whatever. No matter how much stuff you delete off the 20gb you're not going to gain space on the 80.
In our phones all the pre installed apps would be on the 20gb. Anything that gets downloaded/cached etc would go into the 80gb.
If you need space you can free up space by clearing the caches of apps. Getting the titanium backups off the phone and onto a computer or the cloud. Converting some apps to system apps can gain you a couple hundred mb since they wouldn't be on our make believe 80gb partition anymore. Their data and cache will still end up on your regular storage but the apks won't be there...
It's all a translational from marketing to what a computer sees.
In marketing, (and everywhere else I guess based on the mathematical prefixes) they assume:
1Kb = thousand bytes
1Mb = million bytes
1Gb = billion bytes
(kilo- = 10 to the 3rd power, mega- = 10^6, giga- = 10^9)
Whereas a computer sees:
1Kb = 1024 bytes
1Mb = 1048576 bytes
1Gb = 1073741824 bytes
Now the Nexus 4 is 16 Gb = 16 billion bytes.
16 billion divided by 1073741824 = 14.901 Gb
You say before you used TB you had 12 Gigs. With 14.9 of play space, assume your rom/etc is 2.9 Gigs. After backing that up in TB, assuming there is compression, let's say 9.3 Gigs are left.
idk what apps you installed but 2 gigs is easy to kill with games, apps, music, syncing contact photos, etc. (Not to mention caches)
Heck, I install 1 game it takes up 3 gigs.
Albundy, THNAKS a million for explaining this to me. GREAT info!!!
PcFish thank you for the breakdown. No games. I've got the Advanced Task Killer app that helps clean up the cache
