Hi,
My Hero doesn't function properly with my provider LUXGSM here in Luxembourg. The data connection always gets disconnected after a few minutes in sleep mode.
When the Hero is unlocked, the internet connection is again established after few seconds. Gmail and other apps that need Internet connection doesn't work while the phone is on standby.
My provider doesn't get this issue fixed. Since three months I am in contact with teir helpdesk but they neither have a solution nore they know what exactly the cause for the problem is.
Does anybody has had such problems with his hero?
How does the android system keeps the Internet connection alive?
Thx for you help.
P.S.: always on mobile network is enabled on my hero. ;-)
i also have that problem
dont know if there is a setting or not

its enabled
but i have enabled use only 2G network
i will try for a day disabling that to use 3G and see if that's the problem
Do you get internet connection at all in the "2G only" mode?
How about you try WCDMA only or GSM only and see if one of these alleviates the problem. I'm on 3 ireland and had similar problems until I enabled "WCDMA only" (I don't get any internet in "2G only" = GSM only)
The setting for WCDMA only is hidden, go to the dialler and enter *#*#4636#*#*
any luck finding solution?
winmarc - i am in the US but having same problem - did you figure out a solution?

It started to annoy me lately that whenever my wifi drops for 2sec the phone uses 3G. Although that is a nice option in most cases it isnt for me. I want to be able to select which network I want to use: operator's or mine. I looked for settings to switch off 3G and gprs but only "disable hsdpa/hsupa" is there which I believe will disable 3G and not GPRS too. It also requires restart (
So am I missing something and if phone OS cannot offer this, is there a program to help me with managing connections?
Thank you!

i don't know if this option even exists on hd ... i know it does on kaiser (sorry don't have an hd yet to confirm this).
Under settings isn't there are a tab for connections?? in kaiser i can go to this tab and click on connections and than select the network that i want to use. This is part of the os on kaiser and considering hd runs wm as well should be a part of that too (speculation as don't have a hd).

I don't know why they make it so difficult to work out - very annoying.
To stop gprs frpm automatically coming on go Start/Settings/Connections Tab/Connections button/Advanced tab/Select Networks button. Then in the pop up where it says "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:
Select "MY ISP".
That will stop GPRS and if you ever want it just obviously do reverse and select "Your network name GPRS"
I've never seen an option to switch off 3G - will be interested if there is a way without installing a third party app.
Hope that helps.
Anyway?
if better , perm disable of GPRS will be good .
Try NoData to disble GPRS. Personally I'm not having much luck with it as my TD2 keep closing it down in background.
Alternative is to deliberately set an incorrect APN so it cannot connect even when it tries.
I don't know of any method of setting a default connection type.
NoData.cab works fine in my device, but HD Tweak can do the same job, so I removed it.
Would like to do the same too, and then have my weather and emails be updated via my home network thru wireless only...
any one able to do this?
Of course you can! Using 3g or any other paying data connection when WiFi is available is simply foolish

Done spose you would like to tell me how please...i am not that clued in with the HTC device just yet...and have used alot of my data already...which i have to pay for...
Thanks..
With pleasure:
Some people say they can deactivate gprs,3g etc within windows..but as I emptied my sim credit within a minute when I first started my Topaz, I decided not to worry anymore by installing Modaco's NoData.cab (it's free, google for it) and disabling all costly data connections from my operator. After a few days I realized that nodata.cab was no longer needed because I had also HD Tweak, who can do the same.If you use it go to point 6. and disable the 3 last settings. So it's up to you:NoData.cab or Hd Tweak...and I'm sure even others utilities work aswell.
Or you simply delete the settings for 3g conections and the software will decide to use WIFI it's avaible instead 3G (because it will not work without settings.)
How do you do that? In this case you would have to do the network autoconfig again if you need 3g etc..anyway this discussion is funny because it is rare to find a thread with multiple solutions recently....I was getting bored of unsolved problems . Cheers !

i try it right know to be sure.
I have SPB monitor instaleted to verify the traffic.
If 3G it's active and you enable WIFI the application it will use 3G.
If the 3G it's close and open WIFI the application it will use WIFI and don't open 3G.

So it's not about "deleting" anything, you're just using another application (costs USD$19.95). May be a solution
You understand me wrong.
First solution about deleting the connection was the simplest one if you want to use only WIFI.
Second : "I have SPB monitor instaleted to verify the traffic."
I use this app ONLY to verify and to be sure were the app goes to made traffic not for directing the app.
SPB Monitor tell you if you have one or more connections how much traffic you made...
and I see what I tell you if I have 3G closed and WIFI activated the traffic was made on WIFI and 3G remain closed.
But if you have 3G connected and start after that WIFI the 3G will made the traffic.
OK I understand, may I ask you again what are the steps for your first solution?
1. if you don't want to warry about 3G connection and you don't want to use it.
-"Connection setup/menu" disable auto configuration
-"Connections/manage existing connections" and delete all the connections
- enable WIFI and all the programs will use WIFI(will be the single way)
2. If you want to use 3G and WIFI
-when you use WIFI be sure/verify the 3G connection it's closed(click on the status bar-signal strenght icon and if it's active disable it)
-afterthat enable WIFI
Otherwise if 3G it's active will be the first option for applications to acces the internet.
Try to enable Autodisconect (ADV CONFIG or HDtweak) of data connection after you use it to disconnect automatically for you.
I hope I help you.
Solution 1 doesn't work here, wasted a couple of euros ..back to my good ooold system.
i still can't disable it, i just bomb $400 for activating gprs ..
new to WM phone , so ... kinda slow .
If you only want to use wireless all the time, try the following:
Go to Start | Settings | Connections
Click on Connections icon
Click on Advanced tab
Click on Select Networks button
Programs that automatically connect to Internet should use
My Work Network
Programs that automatically connect to a private network should use
My Work Network
Cheers to SEX1 on whirlpool...

Hi, will this solution also fix my issue? My issue being:
-No dataplan, but do not want do disable/delete 3g/gsm, because I still want to use it sporadically on the road, and recieve MMS. But only when I choose to manually.
-At the same time, I want the automatic updates of weather, push-email, stock and such, but ONLY when I'm in a known WLAN.
In simple terms, I want to deny the 3g/E/H from automatically connecting, without deleting them. At the same time, wifi should be allowed to automatically connect, and update selected services.
Is this possible?
Hi,
Anyone know if there is any setting that disables data connection automatically switch on?
I find it quite annoying at some point, i was using wifi to surf the net as well as having window live messenger on. But once i dc-ed from wifi (it auto reconnect back to access point) and the data connection automatically switch on (cost money for data connection), which i don't want it to happen.
Please assist, thank you.
seriously bro...............
use the search feature
you can find it on top. In "search by keywords" type "data connection"
select "search titles only"
in the forum list select blackstone {i presume you have blackstone}
hit search
click on the post closest to your issue
tada
read................
if you still can't find any solution to your problem then post your question

You can also download HD Tweak it allows you to do this, also check what your email etc settings are as It shouldnt connect unless it needs to

Good day gentlemen!
Automatically?
I'm very lazy so is there a solution to automatically block the data-connection while using wifi?
Or maybe you can tell me how to detect wifi being turned on so i can write my own program...
Thanks
i looked pretty hard throughout the settings but didnt find anything on turning just 2G on.

This setting is disabled on my network, I think that's because of the carrier. Perhaps carriers can't disable this on the I9000, however, I can disabled my 3G so it's essentially doing the same thing.
So, if the above method doesn't work, go to the bottom of wireless & network and look for "3G data call settings" and click "disable" (this applies to more than just "calls").
Its not there for me..
only
data roaming
access point names
network mode
network operators.
Are you in Canada with Bell? If so you can't because Bell has no 2g GSM network for the phone to fall back on, it is only 3g. If you do a search you will see there are several already answered threads on this topic.

This setting has disappeared in the newer than JF3 firmwares. It has been replaced by a drop-down menu where you can select 'GSM only'.

Aha, thanks for that. I just updated to JM5 today, and noticed it was gone.
Alternatively,
download from the Market "APN Droid Widget".
It's a button-widget by pressing it enable/disable the 3G connections
Very useful..
If I have both on I can't acess the internet the 3g+ is constantly on as if fetching data but nothing online works.. If I turn off cellular data everything works via WiFi and same goes of I turn WiFi off, cellular data works well..
hi, man

That is not the solution. That is for people that never can connect using 3G connectivity.
Download the Network Profile app, change to another provider then change back to your actual provider.

Try this, i've done it (with the dft freedom rom) and aparently it worked:
1- Install the Diagnosis app by typing ##634# on the phone keypad. For Freedom Rom download it from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22324890&postcount=42
2-

Wait for it to say success, then reboot. This fixed all my data connection issues after applying this patch."
Source: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19083920&postcount=1
EDIT: After a day testing the 3g+ sign keeps showing as the prefered connection was 3g but i could easily receive MMS, and most of the time use internet with 3g+ and sometimes no wifi (even if its connected), sometimes looked like if it has stopped loading like if the phone doesnt know what connection to use or looses connection. Switching off and back on wifi normally solves the problem.
Now i've made another change, set network control aquisition order to automatic, mine was umts_gsm before:
Diagnosis > *#32489# > Back > Back (to Phone Control) > [7] Network Control > [4]Aquisition Order> [1]Automatic
Aparently its fine now, but needs more testing for final confirmation, would be nice if someone tries this as well.
Potential Fix
I had this issue too...
On my phone, this issue was caused by having a custom APN configured for my mobile operator.
Deleting the custom APN entry completely fixed this problem for me.
