This setting is disabled on my network, I think that's because of the carrier. Perhaps carriers can't disable this on the I9000, however, I can disabled my 3G so it's essentially doing the same thing.
So, if the above method doesn't work, go to the bottom of wireless & network and look for "3G data call settings" and click "disable" (this applies to more than just "calls").
Its not there for me..
only
data roaming
access point names
network mode
network operators.
Are you in Canada with Bell? If so you can't because Bell has no 2g GSM network for the phone to fall back on, it is only 3g. If you do a search you will see there are several already answered threads on this topic.

This setting has disappeared in the newer than JF3 firmwares. It has been replaced by a drop-down menu where you can select 'GSM only'.

Aha, thanks for that. I just updated to JM5 today, and noticed it was gone.
Alternatively,
download from the Market "APN Droid Widget".
It's a button-widget by pressing it enable/disable the 3G connections
Very useful..

Hi,
My Hero doesn't function properly with my provider LUXGSM here in Luxembourg. The data connection always gets disconnected after a few minutes in sleep mode.
When the Hero is unlocked, the internet connection is again established after few seconds. Gmail and other apps that need Internet connection doesn't work while the phone is on standby.
My provider doesn't get this issue fixed. Since three months I am in contact with teir helpdesk but they neither have a solution nore they know what exactly the cause for the problem is.
Does anybody has had such problems with his hero?
How does the android system keeps the Internet connection alive?
Thx for you help.
P.S.: always on mobile network is enabled on my hero. ;-)
i also have that problem
dont know if there is a setting or not

its enabled
but i have enabled use only 2G network
i will try for a day disabling that to use 3G and see if that's the problem
Do you get internet connection at all in the "2G only" mode?
How about you try WCDMA only or GSM only and see if one of these alleviates the problem. I'm on 3 ireland and had similar problems until I enabled "WCDMA only" (I don't get any internet in "2G only" = GSM only)
The setting for WCDMA only is hidden, go to the dialler and enter *#*#4636#*#*
any luck finding solution?
winmarc - i am in the US but having same problem - did you figure out a solution?
I want to get Android (and perhaps my google account) to forget all WiFi networks I've used. I can't remove them from Settings > Wireless and Networks > WiFi Settings because this menu no longer responds when I have WiFi enabled, and I can't see the list of networks when WiFi is disabled.
Anyone got any ideas?

neidlinger, you've just made my day. I've been trying to get this fixed for a while. It's caused all kinds of problems for me - one time it even randomly rebooted and removed all my widgets. Many thanks!
There are no GSM network signal, wifi, bluetooth, gps works .. I tested all of the radio 2.15.50.14 to 2.07.51.22.2. Uploaded nand HyperDroid android v3.0. The phone has no sim lock.
Have you went into Settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile networks and made sure the box has a check mark in it? If this box does not have a check mark in it you will not get any GSM signal on the device.

Ok when you go to Settings>Wireless & networks you will have two Mobile networks options. the first one should say "connect to internet" below Mobile networks and have a check box to the right of it. Make sure that it is checked.
Now the second Mobile networks option should say "Set options for roaming, networks, APN's" under it. I think this is where you went, also I just realized you might want to check Network mode that should be in the same place you found the "Network operators" option. Make sure you have GSM/WCDMA auto checked or you can check GSM only if you want.
I'm having the same issue, but it happened after installing mango on my HD2. Been trying diferent radios to see if it fixes itself to no avail.
have you tried another SIM card from another operator?
Going to try it later, it's a strange issue, when searching for networks it finds all 3 that are available in my country, but doesn't connect.
Sorry for the double post, but after flashing various radios, reverting to WM6.5, task29, back to WP7, my cell phone got it's signal back, my issue was with my network carrier. Thanks anyway, and good luck to the OP.
If I have both on I can't acess the internet the 3g+ is constantly on as if fetching data but nothing online works.. If I turn off cellular data everything works via WiFi and same goes of I turn WiFi off, cellular data works well..

That is not the solution. That is for people that never can connect using 3G connectivity.
Download the Network Profile app, change to another provider then change back to your actual provider.

Try this, i've done it (with the dft freedom rom) and aparently it worked:
1- Install the Diagnosis app by typing ##634# on the phone keypad. For Freedom Rom download it from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22324890&postcount=42
2-

Wait for it to say success, then reboot. This fixed all my data connection issues after applying this patch."

EDIT: After a day testing the 3g+ sign keeps showing as the prefered connection was 3g but i could easily receive MMS, and most of the time use internet with 3g+ and sometimes no wifi (even if its connected), sometimes looked like if it has stopped loading like if the phone doesnt know what connection to use or looses connection. Switching off and back on wifi normally solves the problem.
Now i've made another change, set network control aquisition order to automatic, mine was umts_gsm before:
Diagnosis > *#32489# > Back > Back (to Phone Control) > [7] Network Control > [4]Aquisition Order> [1]Automatic
Aparently its fine now, but needs more testing for final confirmation, would be nice if someone tries this as well.
Potential Fix
I had this issue too...
On my phone, this issue was caused by having a custom APN configured for my mobile operator.
Deleting the custom APN entry completely fixed this problem for me.
I keep noticing that while I'm on my home WiFi that my 4G data keeps popping on and off, what can I use to figure out what the cause/app is?
It seems to be affecting my battery as well as I'm getting some pretty serious battery drain.
For lollipop. You probably have "data network preferred" set. Also, under settings/WiFi/advanced there is a check box for switching to network if WiFi signal is weak. Want to unchecked that.

I don't have that option checked though. Also I can't find where I would select data network preferred.
Have you checked the "Smart network switch" which would automatically switch between WLAN and mobile network when some network is poor?
The option is at Settings - WLAN - Smart network switch.
Maybe you can limit or disable mobile data when you are using wifi at home:
Settings - Data usage - Set mobile data limit
Settings - Data usage - Menu button - Restrict background data

I do have that set to off. I think it's some rogue app on my phone.
