Usage VZW Droid X outside of the US

Hi guys,
i am playing with the idea to buy the droid x. i will get it with a verizon contract but can i use the device, if i travel to europe, like germany, swiss, austria...
or does it only work in the states?
any ideas?

Unfortunately no. Droid X is a CDMA phone, and most of Europe uses GSM technology, where you can swap SIM cards. There are no SIMs for CDMA.
If you have time and don't mind waiting, there is some info going around about Droid Pro, which is a global version of Droid 2. You'll be able to use that baby in Europe.

because right now i have a blackberry from vzw and this one workes in europe. i was thinking vzw uses only cdma technology?

Typically Verizon does only use CDMA.
The upcoming Droid Pro is said to have capabilities to do either CDMA or GSM. All of the hardware will be in each phone. Verizon supposedly is going to start using SIM cards around the time of the LTE rollout which could be around the same
time the Pro is introduced.

for me cdma sucks, first you can have either data or voice and next thing is i hate to be dictated by the providers which phones i can use or if i want a specific phone i have to change to a diffrent provider. for example the HTC EVO, good device but crappy provider...doesnt make any sense have a high-tech device on a almost no coverage provider.
but you say verizion is switching over to sim? completely or do the use both then?

You have a global BB model. It has both CDMA and GSM capabilities. it uses cdma while you're here on Verizon and your sim card in europe. There is not that many phones like that though...

hmm and thats f... up... we are living in the jet-age, everything is glocal. within one day you can be every where around the world. and we are not able to fix this problem? and its only because everybody wants to push his standard. thats a nightmare....but well maybe it will be fixed one century...

I thought the phone had to be a quad band phone... or are GSM the only ones that can be?

is it possibly to keep my blackberry and if i go overseas to activate the blackberry (best would be if i can do it by myself, i think there was in one of there brochures a how-to) and in the states use the droid x?
or is it hard to get it activated or maybe vzw doesnt even want that?

Basically your blackberry has to be unlocked. That is it needs to be able to use sims other than default carrier. If it is or if you can get it unlocked, then all you do is buy a sim card from a local operator in europe (should be cheap), put it in your phone, and that gets you on a local network.

i think there is a missunderstanding.
how should i explain it: right now i have the blackberry storm 2 but i want to get a droid phone, either droid x or incredible. I am traveling a lot. My plan is to use with vzw my droid phone and when i go on a trip to europe, i will use my blackberry with vzw but on roaming in the country.
the question is, does vzw allow the switch of my phone like that. the best would be if i can activate the desired phone by myself. i think its only a bunch of numbers which have to be dialed.
i want to use both phones with vzw but be able to switch between them.
is this possible?

Oooh I see now, sorry. I didn't realize you wanna stay on vzw in Europe. That I'm not sure, you'll have to talk to them. But usually it's pretty easy to activate new phone. You just dial verizon's activation number and go through automated prompts. I'm not sure if it's any different when dialing from overseas though.
And I have no clue how verizon operates in Europe btw, you'll need to talk to them. They might give you their sim card, or you might have to get one from local operator that's contracted with verizon. I doubt there is a lot of cdma coverage there.

i think the blackberry has already a sim-card in it, it looks like one...and i am able to use it in europe.
my plan is. using droid x in the states and before i leave i will activate my blackberry to have coverage there...
or is there any droid coming up as global phone, except this droid pro or something.... i am looking for something like the x or incredible...

Yes, you can have a Droid X and still use your Blackberry in Europe. I was in Europe this summer and spoke with VZW about this. They just asked me if I would like to activate my Blackberry while I was overseas.

[Q] Droid Pro on Tmobile or AT&T in the USA

i have been reading and searching for over an hour now here and on several pages and do not seem to find any answer froma real proffessional.
why i cant get signal after i insterted my Tmobile Sim card in my unlocked droid pro verizon ? i even tried and insterted my co worker AT&T sim card, same results, NO NETWORK FOUND.

Verizon told Motorola to block GSM networks inside the US. There is nothing wrong with your phone, but right now AT&T isn't going to work.
Check out the Droid 2 Global forums for more info. I believe folks over there are working on a solution.

Have you had the GSM antennas unlocked? When I bought my Pro I was told that in order to actually use it in Global mode (and use the GSM antenna) you have to either take it to a verizon store or call a number for them to unlock it. The GSM antenna is disabled by default.

The GSM antenna is not locked by default, but the SIM card slot is. If you wanted to take the phone to Europe and buy a pre-paid SIM to use over there (instead of Verizon's SIM) then yes, you must unlock the phone.
However, entering the SIM unlock code will not help you connect to AT&T or T-Mobile, because Verizon blocked it on the radio level.

that's what i was told by a sales rep at the verizon store, so it came from a totally reliable source.
maybe I just got confused as to which was locked (sim card vs antenna)

Man, if the unlock has truly been discovered, it's going to be real tempting not to switch over to T-Mobile if Sprint lets me out of contract. I use my Droid Pro strictly as a travel phone, but if I can use it at home, too, I'd love to.

Unlocked Droid Pro for USA GSM!
This other guy on androidforums came across an unlocked DroidPro that worked with his T-Mobile Sim Card for a while until he decided to update the phone and ended up blocking his T-Mobile sim card in the end...
I kind of hope there are some other phones like that out there so I can get my hands on one of them and figure out where to look for that piece of code that blocks the phones ability to use T-mobile/AT&T networks.

I use my droid pro overseas, but travel to the us two or three times a month. It sucks to have a global phone that i can use everywhere (roaming) but not in the US. A verizon plan is simply too expensive to afford to use 4 days a month.
I would be willing to pay, donate, contribute to find a way to activate the droid pro on a prepaid at&t plan. Or even an affordable verizon daily prepaid plan. Any ideas?

You could have it flashed to Page Plus. They operate on the Verizon network.

anyone know if it's successfully been done? Have an XPRT and we might be migrating from Sprint to Tmob. Would love to keep using the XPRT as backup phone or primary if it takes a while to get my hands on Milestone 3.

It won't work on T-Mobile 3G, and I don't know if this works for the XPRT, but the Pro unlock has been released.

well that's a waste. Too many damn gsm bands. Thanks for the link. Might do it anyway. If I end up selling it, it'll be more valuable if it can be used on AT&T. Think getting GSM phones from Bell Canada is the way to go for Tmob phones. Think the Milestone 3 will be in my future if we do the switch.

HTC Trophy on Sprint?

So I see that it is possible to unlock cdma Android phone for other carriers but I am wondering you can do it with the WP7 devices, I don't want the Arrive because of the keyboard. I am just curious so any help would be appreciated. Sorry if i posted this in the wrong forum but I thought this would be a development question.

63 views and no replies, I guess I will write this off and wait until Sprint releases new WM7 phones, they are supposedly looking at the fall.

There are some listings on eBay purporting to sell unlock codes for the HTC Trophy. Some have already sold and the buyers have left positive feedback for the seller indicating success. Here (link) is the one I found, and I have no affiliation with the seller, eBay, etc. and cannot speak if this is legitimate or not. But apparently, it is possible.

Sprint as of current, will not allow any non Sprint branded phones on to their network. Even if you unlock the device, if it is not Sprint branded, and the ESN is not in their database, they will not allow it on their network.

I just don't get why people would prefer to have the SparkW (VZW Trophy) on Sprint vs the GoldC (HTC Arrive). The Arrive is made out of a nice metal, feels just like a Touch Pro2 but nicer... and its screen is only ever so slightly smaller then the Trophy. The Trophy, I got that thing in a tank of a case just so I know its in my pocket (I HATE small phones).
If anything I can't understand why Verizon didn't get GoldC or ask for a "GoldW" variant with World phone...
@MyNamesTheDoctor's You can't swap Sim cards to Sprint, Sprint is CDMA and doesn't use SIM cards. Due to Sprint's policies.... well.. only an illegal option is available to put the phone on Sprint.
Putting GoldC onto Verizon could probably be done legally, with a custom rom with Sprint software installed, and passing it threw Verizon's program to get the ESN/MIED added to their database... if they still do that. I can't wait for LTE to be the standard, then we won't have these issues with phones and everyone can have a SIM card.. and porting can be done with a simple unlock.
This really should be in Q&A though.

If AT&T was worth a damn where I live, I would be back on them. They have poor coverage here though, so I am almost forced to use Verizon, which works wonderfully I have to say.

For me, Verizon has the best voice service in the area... while AT&T covers the area slightly better, Verizon has 3G data EVERYWHERE (they are 100% 3G), while AT&T has HSPA+ only closer to to Erie, and 1X in the rest of northwest PA.

As with a lot of other people on this site, I'm wondering which carrier will be best to pre-order from? I use Verizon but HATE the fact that most of the times it's one of the last carriers to be able to root the phone. I would also hate for this to turn into another Verizon Samsung Note 4 issue. Too bad the rumors where Samsung was going to start making phones that were both CDMA & GSM/UTMS were not true (as far as I am aware of).
This way since I'm now paying outright for my phones (roughly $800 bucks for 7 Edge), I could use it if I moved between carriers. After reading some other posts, now I'm wondering If I'm paying full price (paid in full), Will it be unlocked? I can't be the only one that feels RIPPED OFF when I pay $800 for a device and can't have root = have my own admin access. Can you imagine buying a laptop and not being able to install/change your own OS? not having admin rights/root?
I feel it's a MAJOR excuse for a carrier to even say - if we give you root & you change the ROM, then it makes it more difficult to help you. Guess what?!? I have not ever asked for help and nor would I... Besides, why couldn't they ask for the ROM version your using... if it matches theirs, they assist... if it doesn't, they tell you before they can assist you, you must put their ROM back on? Yes - there will always be that one person... but hey - if they were able to gain root and swap the ROM, they should be able to swap it back or pay to have it swapped back. OR at least pay for insurance and "accidentally drop it" and have it replaced.
It really bites that I (along with so many other people) want to pre-order the phone for several reasons (the free VR and games along with getting the phone first) but don't want to be SCREWED by one specific carrier and not be able to unlock the phone, root and replace the ROM.
So after all that - which carrier (historically) is the best to purchase from?

What I'm going to do is pre-order from eBay.
The phones have a hell of a mark-up (+$200/$300), but there are unlocked Qualcomms that are usually rooted much more quickly with better support for AOSP.
I hate paying that much, but I'm going to have this phone for years, and the hassle from carrier-branded phones just isn't worth it.
Edit: You should still be able to add insurance and such through your carrier too, depending on their policies.
Didn't have an issue insuring previous phones with AT&T even though they were bought off-plan through other retailers.

It is slightly cheaper when buying it from Best Buy, $779 vs $792. I saw the T-mobile version supports band 13 LTE, but I didn't see anything about CDMA support.

I also did follow up with Verizon about placing a phone on their network that was not purchased from Verizon. They said it is currently limited to 2 phones - I don't have the names because I didn't care much......they couldn't tell me the S7 would be added to the list. So does that mean people on Verizon are STUCK purchasing from Verizon?

For my s6 edge I much preferred the unlocked UK version over the US AT&T version. (Which is why I asked in another thread when we can expect to see unlocked international versions).
AT&T not only added crazy bloat but removed really cool features from the phone. Just took em right out. They also removed Samsung deals/bundles from the phone (there was a MS suite and a free TB of storage or something removed). And in exchange for screwing with the phone they had crazy delays on updates (because they had to re-remove and re-screw the phone).
Coming from iPhone I just can't deal with carrier customizations. Unlocked for life. (crazy that Apple is unlocked now and Android isn't -- bizarro world).

Nexus devices are the exception (6, 5X and 6P). The problem with VZW and Sprint is that they use proprietary CDMA technology for voice communication. You can bring just about any device to their networks and have data but you won't be able to make voice calls in most cases.

Tmobile period, not going to lock the boot loader you'll be able to root (provided the community finds a way, but it's a snap dragon and unlocked bootloader so they will most likely before it even releases. ) second if you don't want tmo service you can still root it and use am at&t sim so there's that.

Verizon disabling HD calling on Unlocked HTC 10s

So my father in law upgraded our plan last night to Unlimited Data.
Should be cool right? Lost service for about a half hour, it came back up and they said "The HTC10 associated with phone number XXXX is not a verizon device, so we can't support it"
After some arguing, I got my 4G LTE back, but my HD calling is gone. I spent an hour on the phone when I finally got told "Well there is a work around but the technical team says it will take 3-5 business days, so just wait it out"
What?...Seriously? I guess it is their new policy that if you don't have a Verizon phone, you will have LOTS of issues if you try switching your plan, even though the past YEAR has been perfect for me with HD calling etc.
Has anybody else had this kind of issue?

Welp its been a few days, nobody at Verizon can figure it out. I've been told to just buy a Verizon phone.
I'm about ready to sell this HTC10 Unlocked and never go back, it seems that Verizon has taken some kind of stand and will not or cannot activate HD Calling and advanced calling features on non verizon devices, why I have no idea...

You will never get Verizon to activate a non-Verizon phone for you, not just HTC 10's.
To get yours running, the ONLY way to do it is to have a newer VZN 4FF LTE/NFC sim activated in random newer Verizon phone with your account set to have Advanced Calling enabled on that line. Placing that working sim into an Unlocked US Ten that has had a Verizon RUU or Verizon radios flash will then work fine after a factory reset. Some roms have Advanced Calling enabled, some don't. The Unlocked Ten operates without issues on Verizon, including Advanced Calling - you just have to have the sim setup beforehand in another phone that is supported by Verizon. No other way....
