i have been reading and searching for over an hour now here and on several pages and do not seem to find any answer froma real proffessional.
why i cant get signal after i insterted my Tmobile Sim card in my unlocked droid pro verizon ? i even tried and insterted my co worker AT&T sim card, same results, NO NETWORK FOUND.
Verizon told Motorola to block GSM networks inside the US. There is nothing wrong with your phone, but right now AT&T isn't going to work.
Check out the Droid 2 Global forums for more info. I believe folks over there are working on a solution.
Have you had the GSM antennas unlocked? When I bought my Pro I was told that in order to actually use it in Global mode (and use the GSM antenna) you have to either take it to a verizon store or call a number for them to unlock it. The GSM antenna is disabled by default.

The GSM antenna is not locked by default, but the SIM card slot is. If you wanted to take the phone to Europe and buy a pre-paid SIM to use over there (instead of Verizon's SIM) then yes, you must unlock the phone.
However, entering the SIM unlock code will not help you connect to AT&T or T-Mobile, because Verizon blocked it on the radio level.

Man, if the unlock has truly been discovered, it's going to be real tempting not to switch over to T-Mobile if Sprint lets me out of contract. I use my Droid Pro strictly as a travel phone, but if I can use it at home, too, I'd love to.
Unlocked Droid Pro for USA GSM!
This other guy on androidforums came across an unlocked DroidPro that worked with his T-Mobile Sim Card for a while until he decided to update the phone and ended up blocking his T-Mobile sim card in the end...
I kind of hope there are some other phones like that out there so I can get my hands on one of them and figure out where to look for that piece of code that blocks the phones ability to use T-mobile/AT&T networks.
I use my droid pro overseas, but travel to the us two or three times a month. It sucks to have a global phone that i can use everywhere (roaming) but not in the US. A verizon plan is simply too expensive to afford to use 4 days a month.
I would be willing to pay, donate, contribute to find a way to activate the droid pro on a prepaid at&t plan. Or even an affordable verizon daily prepaid plan. Any ideas?

You could have it flashed to Page Plus. They operate on the Verizon network.
anyone know if it's successfully been done? Have an XPRT and we might be migrating from Sprint to Tmob. Would love to keep using the XPRT as backup phone or primary if it takes a while to get my hands on Milestone 3.
It won't work on T-Mobile 3G, and I don't know if this works for the XPRT, but the Pro unlock has been released.

well that's a waste. Too many damn gsm bands. Thanks for the link. Might do it anyway. If I end up selling it, it'll be more valuable if it can be used on AT&T. Think getting GSM phones from Bell Canada is the way to go for Tmob phones. Think the Milestone 3 will be in my future if we do the switch.

Unfortunately no. Droid X is a CDMA phone, and most of Europe uses GSM technology, where you can swap SIM cards. There are no SIMs for CDMA.
If you have time and don't mind waiting, there is some info going around about Droid Pro, which is a global version of Droid 2. You'll be able to use that baby in Europe.

Typically Verizon does only use CDMA.
The upcoming Droid Pro is said to have capabilities to do either CDMA or GSM. All of the hardware will be in each phone. Verizon supposedly is going to start using SIM cards around the time of the LTE rollout which could be around the same

You have a global BB model. It has both CDMA and GSM capabilities. it uses cdma while you're here on Verizon and your sim card in europe. There is not that many phones like that though...
hmm and thats f... up... we are living in the jet-age, everything is glocal. within one day you can be every where around the world. and we are not able to fix this problem? and its only because everybody wants to push his standard. thats a nightmare....but well maybe it will be fixed one century...

Basically your blackberry has to be unlocked. That is it needs to be able to use sims other than default carrier. If it is or if you can get it unlocked, then all you do is buy a sim card from a local operator in europe (should be cheap), put it in your phone, and that gets you on a local network.

i think there is a missunderstanding.
how should i explain it: right now i have the blackberry storm 2 but i want to get a droid phone, either droid x or incredible. I am traveling a lot. My plan is to use with vzw my droid phone and when i go on a trip to europe, i will use my blackberry with vzw but on roaming in the country.
the question is, does vzw allow the switch of my phone like that. the best would be if i can activate the desired phone by myself. i think its only a bunch of numbers which have to be dialed.
i want to use both phones with vzw but be able to switch between them.
is this possible?
Oooh I see now, sorry. I didn't realize you wanna stay on vzw in Europe. That I'm not sure, you'll have to talk to them. But usually it's pretty easy to activate new phone. You just dial verizon's activation number and go through automated prompts. I'm not sure if it's any different when dialing from overseas though.
And I have no clue how verizon operates in Europe btw, you'll need to talk to them. They might give you their sim card, or you might have to get one from local operator that's contracted with verizon. I doubt there is a lot of cdma coverage there.
i think the blackberry has already a sim-card in it, it looks like one...and i am able to use it in europe.
my plan is. using droid x in the states and before i leave i will activate my blackberry to have coverage there...

Yes, you can have a Droid X and still use your Blackberry in Europe. I was in Europe this summer and spoke with VZW about this. They just asked me if I would like to activate my Blackberry while I was overseas.

Just recently came across a T8282 for sale, At a local thrift store of all places (lol).
Aside from some screen scratches (I assume these did not come with a factory protector/layer I can just peel off?) and missing the stylus + SIM card, But It works perfectly.
Anyway,
This is my first "Real" cell phone or "Modern" I guess you would say.
I've always used Prepaid service and Phones provided by the Prepaid Carrier, As has my family.
We all use Virgin Mobile, And I already have an established account with funds on it for them.
Also, They just added a very reasonable monthly Data Package Plan that seems to be the best deal around in prepaid.
Would there be any possible way to use Virgin Mobile Service with my new T8282?
I'm aware Virgin does not ussualy use SIM cards (or at all) in there phones, But, I've seen some Virgin Sim cards up for sale on auctions sites that appear to be available from outside the US.
Would I be able to make one of these "Foreign" SIM Cards work properly inside the US?
And if not~
What is a good Prepaid Service Provider that uses SIM cards I could switch over to?
I'm aware prepaid is not really the way to go with a phone like this, But I'm not really a hardcore user, And Non-Contract has always got me through just fine.

The T8282 is a European GSM/UMTS handset and as such won't work on Virgin Mobile in the US (which uses the Sprint CDMA network)
You'll need to switch to a US carrier which uses GSM - AT&T and T-Mobile are the two big networks which do. In addition, you'll only get voice and GPRS data as the phone can't use the 3G frequences used in the US (the T8285 was the version with US bands)
Virgin Mobile is a global brand, but each country runs its network seperatly. You won't be able to pick up a SIM card and expect it to work on the US Virgin network.
As ther T8282 wasn't sold officially in the US, it will already have been unlocked if it has been used with a US network.
There's other people here which have used a T8282 in the US, it's worth searching the forums.

I've been with Sprint for years and have never used a non-CDMA device. I don't want to leave Sprint, but Sprint network coverage isn't the greatest and non-existence outside of the US. Should I purchase a GSM phone as a backup for when I travel to areas I know not covered by Sprint? I'm thinking I should be able to go to a GSM provider and get some type of short-term plan, like a week or month plan. Is that naive?
I'm sure the device has something to do with it, too. What is a best device out there to give me the most flexible support from major GSM providers? I supposed one that at least support voice and SMS, but data for GPS would be good.
Yes it wouldn't hurt you could buy an unlocked gsm phone and just use pre pay sim cards with it! I sell verizon and thats what I usually recommend that to any customers that are traveling outside the country but it applies to everywhere

All Sprint World phones are GSM capable and come unlocked. The one that comes to mind that is blocked from working in the US is the Photon, but Blackberries should work fine.
You could get a phone with both a GSM and CDMA radio. The best phone I can think of is the Motorola Droid 2 Global, which is a good phone if you like slide-out QWERTY smartphones. It's also quite cheap coming in at $320 for a brand new unlocked version.

No because Verizon prevents the GSM radio in Droid phones from working in the US. Blackberries work though. It might be a Motorola thing, I'm not sure about the Droid Incredible 2 (HTC).

They MIGHT be a fix but right now there is NOT. Some of the older phones like the Moto Photon its not LTE but its a world phone and people could flash a few things and make it work, But only EDGE in the USA anyway.

Modem patch is not even possible with this phone right now... The phones are ONLY meant to run on GSM for LTE data and NOTHING ELSE

I expect Sprint will provide a method soon to unlock the GSM and UMTS functions in the phone to be able to use it internationally. However, I don't expect the GSM and UMTS functions to operate inside the US. Sprint has always disabld them on GSM capable Android and iOS devices it sells.
I don't see why it wouldn't work for you as long as you can get it unlocked.
Sprint is not going to unlock it for you unless you are a long time customer or have the phone with them for 90 days.
hyelton is completely wrong though.. the sim does authenticate lte on sprint but also acts as a gsm sim internationally.
you can also remove the sim and insert any international sim once unlocked providing the carrier uses the correct bands.

Sprint's GS4 is fully capable of voice and data on international GSM/HSPA+/UMTS 850/900/1900/2100MHz networks. You have to request Sprint to unlock your phone's sim (or find a work around if you're not a Sprint customer), but once unlocked you can pop in any international sim and it will WORK JUST FINE on international GSM networks, they don't have to support LTE. Heck the only thing preventing the SG4 from working on US GSM networks is Sprint locked the Sim from using USofA GSM carrier sim cards.
As long as the OP can get their Sprint SG4 sim unlocked, they can pop in their international sim and use the GSM in their country NO PROBLEM like any other GSM phone.

Well YES you can easily use your phone overseas, But it was POSTED in the Sprint Forum which is ONLY in the USA and in which using it does NOT apply in the USA. And to get the phone unlocked I`m not sure if a regular unlocking company would be able to do it someone with a sprint account would and it would be MUCH more trouble than just to pick up a ACTUAL GSM carriers Version of the phone.( I should had just said that to begin with) Its VERY pointless to TRY and want to use the sprint Version when they are SEVERAL OTHER varrients that are GSM they could have got to use.

I sell on Amazon and Most people wont ship out of the USA on Amazon. Mostly only Candia but Ive tried ordering a lot of things overseas and 90% I cant as they wont ship here
Amazon sells the Sprint for $599 this is probably why. I bought mine at Best Buy and had them price match Amazon for that price.

Looks like everyone here is an expert in this matter but so far haven't seen a single link to reputable sources... OP call sprint international department and get answer straight from the carrier (888) 226-7212
Even IF the phone is capable of being used in GSM bands internationally, you would have to get it unlocked by sprint and they change policies all the time so just call..

I got my phone unlocked for international use. I contacted sprint international services. I was initially told that you have to be activated for at least 90 days before they could unlock the phone but would forward my request to some department. After one day I got a email that my phone has been unlocked.

Yea.... but it ONLY works internationally AND you have to be a sprint customer.
The POINT I have been trying to get across is that people need to understand Sprint is a CDMA carrier and ONLY relies on GSM for LTE. I think what people think is that they are solely a gsm carrier like most of the world is but its NOT

I don't know the answer to your question but I can confirm that the Galaxy S5 that I received from TMobile was in fact LOCKED.
I called the support # and was told that I had to have service and use it for 40 days before it could be unlocked.
I PAID THE FULL PRICE ($720 with tax)!!!
I asked to speak with a supervisor -- after 10 minutes on hold -- no change.
I told the store that I was going to bring it back because I didn't pay $700 for a locked phone. Everyone has been nice but it's locked for policy issues and not for technical reasons. I flew to Canada when I bought my iPhone4.
And, AT&T is worse -- one guy told me 3 months and tech support said it had to be active for 6 months.

It is GSM/LTE unlocked (as are all Verizon LTE devices), but I'm pretty sure it doesn't have T-Mobile's LTE bands (or at the very least it doesn't have all of their bands).
From what I have been reading, on a Verizon phone, calls and data using GSM and WCDMA bands would work. But LTE bands are Verizon specific hence would not work.
Tl; Dr Voice /data using GSM/WCDMA. No LTE.

I also noticed that with S5, there aren't GSM carrier specific versions. Meaning they are going IPhone route with making all GSM phones enabled that for that country's LTE bands. Is that right reading?

I am using the verizon s5 on tmobile. It is unlocked and can be used on tmobile LTE. However there are only set modes. LTE/CDMA GSM/UMTS AND GLOBAL. Which means you can't use lte and gsm at the same time (no lte data and voice calls). I usually keep it on gsm, and when I need speedy data I switch it to lte.

How? If you put a TMobile SIM in the phone, or any other foreign SIM, it boots but receives no service. This is in line with almost all other Verizon branded phones (excluding Apple) -- where the phone works (unlocked) outside the US, but won't roam to ATT/TMo in the US.
Pictures please. For the record, my S5 doesn't register on a network with a TMobile or Australian SIM. The Australian SIM in a Nexus 5 roams to TMobile.

This was probably true about a year ago but the recent releases from Verizon, e.g. iPhone 5/5s and galaxy s4 has been fully unlocked world phones. I'm sure there are a few other phones... I think lg g2? I'm not exactly sure. But I have personally stuck my sim(T-Mobile) into my friend's Verizon phones (s4 and iPhone 5s) and they work right away after a reboot. Only problem might be an edit in APN for data and mms. Just sharing my experience, you should check out your phones again.

Not trying to be a jerk, but unless you tried this process in the actual phone in question, then you don't really know if it works. The phone DOES NOT just magically work on TMobile if you put a SIM in, you receive NO service. Now, I didn't go mess around with APNs -- typically those are only for MMS/Data. This is also true for several other phones:
Razr HD / Maxx HD
Galaxy S3
In the past, when the phones were SIM locked, a foreign SIM would prompt for an unlock code before the phone even booted into "normal" Android. That's not the case here -- because the phone is not SIM locked -- but I do believe it is network locked to VZW only when in the US.
For the record, I did try this in my S5. I will be going to Australia next week and will try a Telstra (or perhaps Optus) SIM over there to see what happens.

I was a wireless agent not to long ago, so I know how these things work, not that it magically just works... It is odd that the apple phones -- and some of the Android phones -- are totally unlocked so that you can use them on ATT/TMobile in the US -- but some (like the S5, apparently) are not. I still am interested to know how some of the other users in this thread got their S5s working on TMobile...
Why would anyone want to buy a Verizon GS5 and use it on T-Mobile? The bootloader is locked and there is currently no unlock method available.

I can confirm the Verizon GS5 is compatible with T-Mobiles LTE network I'm using one now with LTE all you have to do is go to settings mobile network and switch to Global mode some times you'll have to toggle LTE then back to global to get LTE to kick in.
I am able to successfully use my VZ Galaxy Note 3 and my wife uses her VZ Galaxy S5, both devices on T-mobile Edge, HSPA, HSPA+ (21mbps), and LTE (band 4) frequencies. These devices unfortunately will not do DC-HSPA+ (42mbps), but that's not a big deal for us because LTE coverage is good where we live. We have no issues with making voice calls, or sending SMS/MMS, and don't have to switch APN's or toggle between Global Mode or GSM/UMTS mode. We leave them on Global Mode with the correct APN settings.

This is all new info to me. I have an AT&T galaxy S5 that I want to use on Verizon. Is it possible or do I need to trade for a Verizon-specific model?
