I'm a noob, so please go easy on me. I was just wondering if there is a way to get Android on the Diamond, while keeping Windows Mobile. I really like the TouchFlo interface, but I'd like to have access to the various apps available for Android. That way, Diamond users can have the best of both worlds.
look in the ROM section. It is not fully functional and i'm not sure if you'll be able to install apps. I don't think it will be too useful for what you want just yet, when its further developed maybe...?
You basically want to run both OS' on the same phone at the same time? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that would be impossible; if for no other reason than pure space issues. And even if you could somehow manage it, you'd still be running two completely discrete OS' which you'd have to reboot the phone to swap between constantly, there's literally no way to have the functionality from both OS' available simultaneously so it really wouldn't be all that practical. You'd have to emulate one OS inside the other (as Mac and Linux user sometime do with Windows) but no phone currently has the hardware power for that kind of thing.

How is space a problem? 4 gig is more than enough space. But you're right, it would be very impractical. I think that the Android home page beats TouchFLO anyway.

i think he's talking about the rom/ram, not about the internal storage. the rom/ram is actually just that big to hold one (WinMobile) os!
Yes, hebbe sees what I was getting at: you'll need to store any and all OS' you want to run in the internal ROM, you can't have an OS running from the storage. It would be like running Windows directly from a memory card on your desktop computer (which I realise is probably possible at some level on a proper desktop machine if you do enough screwing around but it certainly wouldn't be easy and I'm not convinced you could do it on a phone).

oh, i get it now lol.
While I wait for my micro sd to get here to root and use my Aria, I have been just playing around with it and checking out various apps in the market. Then I saw an antivirus app and downloaded. Since I am new to Android, I thought I would ask others whether they have had any problems (or if there are problems) that require an antivirus. Or is it just a useless app?
I noticed there are apps that can contain some important information (i.e. mobile banking and e-mails), but is an antivirus really needed?
Thanks in advance for the discussion.
I personally do not use one, and don't plan on using one unless someone supplies a greatly convincing argument. While I don't doubt that it is a possibility in the future it will be needed, I don't believe they are necessary up to this point. From what I've read there are very few viruses/malware whatnot out there written to affect Android. Everytime you install an app it tells you exactly what it needs to access on that second screen. Also, I'm not sure if you have any experience with what a lot of antivirus applications tend to do to computers speed, but I imagine it'd affect the phone in a similar fashion.
You can read a better constructed forum post about it here
If I'm incorrect on anything someone please correct me
Thanks. That was a good read.
I was just unsure if I want to use the online banking app. It is very helpful and useful but I was just a bit hesitant.
No problem In my opinion, I think for something like that (I use Mint personally, if you don't know what it is, you should check it out for banking/credit cards, finance in general) losing the phone and having the information get into the wrong hands is a bigger concern than a virus stealing it. Again, that's my opinion. Although there are apps for the scenario I described also SMobile Anti-Theft is the only one I can think of off the top of my head for no particular reason, but I know there are a few others (possibly better, not using one myself just yet) out there
Mobile Antivirus = Rip off and waste of phone resources. Sad part is, many programs meant to facilitate tracking your own phone (lost/stolen) for some reason include antivirus kind of crap in it. There are alternatives, but none the less it's all complete nonsense.
Works great, never had a virus with it! Or without it.
I dont have one on my android right now It's true I have to download antivirus software now for Cellphones, especialy android phones. Some of them like avast already have this option. I've read ZenOK Free Antivirus is going to release a free version too. which one you recommend
Never used antivirus on my android phone or my Ubuntu laptop. Never had any problems. I think worst case scenario right now is receiving a virus via email and forwarding it on to an unsuspecting windows box. But then again anyone who gets that email on windows And doesn't have antivirus is foolish.
Of course this could all change in the future and it may one day be necessary yo use an antivirus on android.

With your phone it may not be really needed but your laptop?! Do you know how many viruses, malicious software, adware and spyware could be on your laptop right now? I would suggest at least using it on your laptop. Anyways, I do personally use one on my phone as well.

Are you familiar with Linux based systems such as Ubuntu? It works the same way as android, which is also Linux based. It doesn't operate anything like a windows system. Everything runs in its own little 'box' (think .apks) and pretty much all software is downloaded through an Ubuntu download center (think Android Market). Everything has to have permissions, also just like android. It doesn't utilize .exe like windows. All this adds up to a system that is pretty secure. I don't download any software outside of the download center so I know where all my programs are coming from. All I use my ubuntu laptop for is surfing the web and messing with my phone. My laptop doesn't need an antivirus any more than my phone does. And my phone doesn't need any antivirus. People get stuck on that windows mentality (antivirus/task killers/memory managers).

Have never used an Antivirus on my phone I actually don't see how it's really of any use .-.
Everything I download app wise is from the Market and other than that I don't download anything besides a pic here and there
A virus cannot do anything malicious on Android or Linux without permissions, so I think antivirus can only protect a Linux computer or android phone from the user (who has to grant the permissions)...therefore I believe antivirus on android is mostly useless

So after all the hype, the troubles getting an activation code, and then installing WP7 on my HD2, I sit here waiting for my Android DesireHD Nand build to finish re-installing on my device.
I thank the community so much, as I was so obsessed with getting WP7 (i've been a fan of Microsoft's os since my dell axim days) that I was even planning on upgrading my contract early just to get an HD7.
But the truth is.. in which way is this better than WM 6.5?? After two minutes in on this OS i sat there thinking to myself: "Really!!??" Oh wait this is how the dude who made the new Windows Phone commercial got the idea...
Just my two cents.
fair point..
It just depends on what you want to get out of it.
Android may work better for your needs now, WP7 with a bit of development may work for you better in the future.
I tried android for a few months a while back (the SD card builds) and liked it initially but then I found it couldn't do everything I wanted in 6.5. The lack of an equivilant to Softmaker was important.
Granted WP7 cant do anywhere near what 6.5 could (lacking of decent office apps like softmaker) but it does what it does very well. Right now i'm enjoying the ride - It reminds me when I first started palying around with my SPV C500
i had very poor expectations, im a heavy WM6.5 user and i ran Android of SD as a general intrest but since ive got WP7 ive found myself thinking, you know what, it works, it works well, its quick and i dont have this urge to mod the crap out of it.
The only thing WP7 on HD2 lacks is a decent camera app.
Above that, i suppose there is a couple of programs i need from WM which is a real pain, i really think that WP7 needs some kind of advanced mode, every day joe via the carriers wouldnt need it but a hidden setting could open it up for us, that way MS keeps its image, its identity to the world and we get that wee bit more freedom we all want, that setting would apply to business users that may need more access, and again, by checking that option MS removes all responsibility from anything that goes wrong, everyone wins!
Most people just want a phone that just works and it is easy to work with. And I think WP7 is very easy to use, and will appeal to the masses.
Need to say more??? wp7 is easy to use, user frienldy and....AWESOME...
I also love Android because you can customize it, many apps and more! But there is something with wp7 that makes me horny!
Just stick around with WP7 and i think it wont dissapoint you!
i have to agree with most of the positive comments here ... i only tried wp7 out of curiosity and just because our beloved hd2 can!! i was pleasantly surprised at the speed and usability. i love the nice clean interface especially the mail client. sure it lacks a lot of apps at the moment but surprisingly i the angry birds withdrawal symptom went away faster than i expected and i'm finding it hard to go back to android even though i do have it on as dual boot.
Actually the only things I really miss from WM6.5/Android are:
1. Choice of browsers. IE Mobile is fine but some sites are not dispaying properly. Opera usually fixes this in WM6.5 and Android.
2. Some sort of Skype, but I guess this is coming soon to WP7 anyway.
3. Ability to attach any sort of file to e-mails. I'm still to figure out how I can attach and send a PDF i downloaded through the browser
Other than that WP7 has many pluses:
1. Excellent e-mail client. By far the best out there on ANY smartphone.
2. Best Office experience out there.
3. Mind blowing games
4. Very neat and clean interface.
5. It's fast and furious.

Nicely said dude!
Yeah I agree with most of this.
WP7 is slick, and i really like the basic functions.
WP7
+dialer/txt/email
+Zune
+presentation
-slow to load apps
-hardly any apps and the price of apps is high (no skype, no Nav, no flash, no XDA)
-having to reload apps, (no multitasking)
-browser isn't recognised as mobile a lot of the time
- that tile list is going to get very long once more apps come
Agreed. Nice, clean and simple. Reminds us that it doesn't always have to be about 300 different (mostly unnecessary) apps and all the other bells and whistles but a nice simple and effective interface. Wasn't too sure about it at first but it's definitely growing on me!

1. Nav = Navigon Select. Works very fine
I agree with the possetive comments too
but the minuses :
there's no GPS and that sucks (hope to find some)
No greats APPs that I love like WhatsAPP, Waze, Skype...
and Not a big fan of the Camera.
But... And this is A Big but...
The OS is Awesome!!! the speed, the clean, the beauty
I'm tempted... but
Is there any solution that's working for WiFi tethering? Is there a multi-client IM app? I also would prefer that there was a better way than through the browser to access gmail and google voice, but I doubt we'll ever see a native app for either of those.
I may load it when I have a couple of days to play just for general interest though.
You don't need a "native" Gmail client. Outlook handles Gmail more than fine and delivers it as push mail if you wish so. WP7 syncs also with Google Calender and GMail Contacts, so switching forth and back between WP7 and Android is very pleasent as all your contacts and appointments are instantly there
I was shocked to see how well WP7 supports Google services
Pros:
WP7 is FAST
Love the GUI
Love integration of social stuff
Zune
Xbox Live
Most of the apps I need are there and are better than anywhere else (Twitter, RSS, Facebook, Ebay etc.)
Games are good
Cons:
Absence of smart dialer!
USB drive! (there is no legal way how to get 55MB pdf to the device)
No data backup!
No multitasking for in app downloads etc (coming)
More customization (backgrounds, ringtones)
****ed up syncing with live (I have horrible problems with my main Live ID)
Poor contacts management (no groups, no favorites)
Absence of some apps (Zinio, proper turn by turn, flash) - they are coming, and I understand, that this is normal with new OS:
I love WP7 and am sticking with it. For me, there is more pros than cons. Everything Windows phone does, it does right. MS just needs to bring us the stuff that WP currently doesnt do
I have been using WP7 since it was made available for HD2 and I love it. Very fast and clean UI.
I agree with everything you have here. Its actually kind of nice to have a OS that just works. I haven't restarted my phone in almost 3 wks now. Microsoft really needs to step up with their Bing turn-by-turn directions and new hardware. If HTC comes out with better hardware for Tmobile soon I will definitely upgrade to windows phone 7.
Wp7 is ok but it really needs a better browser! I'm back to android only because of missing flash and the bad browser experience
Edit: the locked down OS is another no go for me. I need usb storage and teetering.
I prefer WP7 over Android because it offers proxy setting right out of the box. To me Android is just a fancier Windows Mobile. And I quite like the smoothness of IE though I wish it would handle more than 6 tabs.

Hi All
Im a newly converted Android user after purchasing the Nexus 10. Being a newbie to the Android and Tablet world i was just wondering if Antivirus apps are something worth bothering about especially considering im downloading torrents on occasions.
Is Antivirus just something thats not really needed on a tablet, also if you are using one which one do you find is best and doesnt use up to much resources?
Thanks

Antivirus is basically not needed on a tablet, some people like to have it on phones mainly for the all in one security apps that provide antivirus (Mobile Antivirus applications are known for warning you about false positives) plus device recovery and location tools in case your device is lost or stolen. In reality the best antivirus solution for mobile devices is be carefully what applications you download and install, double check the permissions and see if they are realistic for the application that is requesting them. For example, there is no reason a calculator app needs to be able to read your call log's to function. Your less at risk downloading torrents on your mobile device but you still have to be careful with and pay attention to what you download. At the end of the day healthy caution, carefulness, and little research is the best antivirus solution for mobile devices right now.
I've been using McAfee Mobile on tab for over a year and had only one false positive. I contacted them about it and it was corrected within a few days with an update.
Good question. I wonder how they are on battery life and resource hogging........there a lot of choices.
Thanks for your reply shimp208.
Yea i did wonder whether AV was really needed on a tablet or whether it was just a pointless app for the supplier to make some money from ppl being over cautious.
Consider this: It is simply not possible for an antivirus app to detect a real Android virus, trojan or exploit in another app. Since the virus app is an app it is in its own sandbox: it cannot scan the resources of other apps in their sandbox.
Even if if could, it could not remove those resources.
So all it can do is check the permissions of apps, and check media files on your sdcard against a windows virus database.
I've seen the MacAfee app on my friend's phone warn about jpeg viruses. It's silly that anyone would think a windows jpeg virus could affect Android.
It's a scam, folks.

Just what I was looking for thank you Who needs updates anyhow
FYI, if you disable the Windows Update service you will lose the ability to use the Windows Store.
I didn't know that. But I don't really use the windows store.

@feherneoh
First Microsoft has no right to disable hardware. What if someone makes a game controller at home(which is possible thanks to 3D printing) and just because it isn't authorized by MS it stops working.
Not everyone can afford fancy peripherals and have to use lesser known manufacturers.
Also during the updates MS collects some amount of usage data which most people don't want to provide. Remember the backdoor happily left open by MS? Enjoy being spied on?
What about people with limited internet data? I don't want MS pushing stuff I don't want on my PC. Security updates are important so it is good practice to keep receiving them. But using a third party firewall and antivirus will allow to you keep your security up to date without the other stuff MS bundles in with the updates.
[Moto E 2nd Gen 3G running CyanogenMod 12.1]
@feherneoh
Thanks for the info on the hardware. I was under the impression that hardware from manufacturers not recognized by MS would stop working.
And I did upgrade to Win10 on the third or fourth day.
The problem with data is that you can no longer choose what updates to install. So I'm forced to download ALL updates that I may not want. For example "Get Skype".
With third party security suites you get only new virus definitions, etc. Also automatically checking for and downloading updates hogs bandwidth. I barely get my promised 512kBps downspeed and now I have Windows Update slowing down all my devices on Wi-Fi.
After following the method above, you can always start the process again and install updates at your convince. Only the enterprise edition lets you delay updates. Now you can do it on your home edition as well.
[Moto E 2nd Gen 3G running CyanogenMod 12.1]
Man windows 10 sounds promising, but I hate how they force things on you.. I don't want a Windows store, I don't want Xbox, I want to modify windows to my liking, Cortana would be great on mobile, not at my desktop PC. I bought RAM to handle my applications, but my OS..
I appreciate them trying to stop piracy, but that seems so intrusive, what if I but DRM free games? Does it detect Windows store games only?
Man until they get their **** together I'll stick with Linux /win 7

Oh really, it takes less? I had so many issues when I tried running Windows 8/8.1 on my old PC, only had 4GB of RAM, the OS itself seemed to take 1.8 of my RAM, perhaps it was some harddrive issue, I just switched to Linux Mint and then it ran smooth. Figured it was the OS, never looked too much into that. I know Vista was worse than XP and the newer the OS the more memory consuming it was, 8/8.1 being the most consuming. I'd assumed Win10 was going to be better than 8 but worse than 7.
ah well.
There is SO much rubbish on the internet about W10 'privacy' problems, little is really true.
OS updates are a GOOD thing, why do you want to disable them? No one has yet given a truly good reason for doing so. Its mostly paranoia. I find it funny that for the most part those moaning about Windows updates are those crying out for Android updates, even though Android updates usually introduce a whole boatload of bugs and problems!
Windows has only 1 mechanism for disabling, or scanning anything, the Defender and malware detection software. Defender is designed to look for cracks, hacks and keygens (as is most AV software). If it finds them it will remove them and that may break the pirated software. It does so because a lot of those cracks carry malware and viruses.
It wont disable your hardware because it randomly decides it hates it, it does so because its fake, dangerous, or infringing. It wont disable your cheap games controller as long as its a legally sold product from a reputable source. If you buy from a known manufacturer there should be no problem. Buying from a nameless Chinese manufacturer is always a risk, especially cheap USB memory sticks which often carry viruses and hacked firmwares.
Nah I'm gonna keep it off anyways. I can't afford all that bandwidth being hogged. When Google Fiber comes to my country then I'll sleep good.
Anyways when you want to get updates just start the service again!
Windows is going to be constantly updated now with little or no chance of going back to old versions. Its better to be more informed on what changes the updates brings than automatically installing them.
The basic thing here is that people don't want Microsoft dictating how we use our OS.
[Moto E 2nd Gen 3G running CyanogenMod 12.1]
Anyways I was hoping this forum would help us share other OS tweaks to getting the most our of Win10. Like of you notice a change that's not for the better (in your opinion) you can share how to fix it.

I understand the problem with limited data allowances etc, but thats why there is a setting for metered connections.
As for it being 'your' OS, its not its Microsofts OS, want your own OS, make your own Linux Build.
@ChrisM75
Yeah but since I own a hardware tied/retail licence its up to me how to use my OS within the EULA set my MS. I shouldn't be forced to update my OS if I don't want the changes it brings. Moreover at the cost of limited data.
[Moto E 2nd Gen 3G running CyanogenMod 12.1]
Thats just your opinion, its not the actual situation. If you agree with the EULA (which if you install W10 then you do) then you have to do what they say, if you dont then you have one choice, dont use the OS.
@ChrisM75
Incorrect. The EULA says nothing about disabling updates.
If that was the case then it would violate the EULA to use the OS without an internet connection.
OS updates are a good thing.
Its just that MS forces you install them ALL including completely useless things like Get Skype and Get Office which are basically just advertisements.

Greetings Everyone;
Among everything being said, there's more (or way more " Dark Microsoft Abuses" - I do consider so. Callmit speculation if you
prefer).
No disrespect for any of you nor to Microsoft... As Windows was my Favourite OS since v3.1 - Even MS-Dos)...
I rather don't use Windows 10 at all (Problem Fixed!).
People should consider keeping their privacy Safe.
I disagree a little with most of that anti-piracy protection. And see no reasons for the "Hardware" Part. It's just like saying: "We Own You!".
If that "Untrusted Hardware" is true... You cannot build your own Hardware. Wich doesn't make any sense.
Well... In any case if you feel like being a slave, monopolised, morganized, controlled, etc isn't good for you... Then I guess one should stop supporting such things.
Finally: Honesty and Freedom is one thing. Being a puppet in a greedy world is another.
Of course it's just my opinion. You are free to do as "they" tell you...
A lot has changed since I posted this originally.
Windows 10 now can uninstall your software during major updates(compatibility issues) and I've already seen people who have lost office licences because of this.
It started automatically installing itself over old versions without consent and if you lost power then say goodbye to all your data.
Its pretty sad. I was so hyped for win10 but now have rolled back to 8.1.
I've been on windows since windows 2000 to ME then vista and now 8.1. So I'm a dedicated user, but not a fanboy. If a company does shady stuff don't stick up for them man.

About the stupidity: The update keeps EVERY SINGLE FILE even if it fails, unless the partition itself is destroyed, but that can happen any time when power randomly goes out.
If you cannot find something after update, go and check it in Windows.old, it will be there, be it a file, an "uninstalled" application, a license key stored in registry, or anything else.
Stop being stupid. Read, don't blame. Don't sue MS for things they did not do. Sue them for the things they DID

I cannot understand how you people still cannot get that untrusted HW part.....
It's not about custom devices, it's about clones, those identify themselves as the original piece of hardware
You can build your own hardware, just use an unique HWID, not one already in use
Build a controller, but don't set it to emulate XBOX controller, just use it as a standard HID device, or something

Oh.. Ok, maybe i got it the wrong way then.
I was thinking way ahead, and probably missed out some info on the way.
My idea behind it was: not only custom hardware, but also 2nd hand (maybe stolen) hardware, and harware "clones" (i.e: WiFi Cloned MAC).
For stolen hardware it would make some sense that every piece of hardware would have their ID registered to prevent piracy or theft, yet if someone buys used Hardware (let's say: on Ebay); there's just no way to verify its origin.
Furtherwards..
I decided to upgrade my own System to Windows10 (32 Bit) on a 64 Bit Machine.
Honestly i'm not happy with it.
Those Auto (Hidden) Updates are really terrible..
I'm sure that there is a way to stop & control them.
(Besides Disconnecting the Internet Completely).
About Tthe Privacy related options: so far; those have been a pain to set up properly, and i believe i haven't checked everything. I'll have to dig even deeper.
Aditionally (apart from this thread topic): My System heats up considerably; the Start Menu is really bugged. I have to press "50" times to open it.. Wich is annoying. It feels like the system is trying to prevent click mistakes... But it requires at least 4 or 5 clicks to open it.
I thought it could be some delay, but doesn't seem to be the case.
Overall: Windows 10 was meant for
Performance... but it is kinda slow.
I thing i will Downgrade to the best Windows version ever done (v6.x a.k.a Windows 7").
Now that there's little time left for the free update, how many of you guys have updated? I rolled back 3 months after the initial update, but is it worth it now. Like improved.
