Compact Qwerty not there? - HD2 General

Does anyone else already with a HD2 not have the ability to select a different keyboard type? I'm sure that you only needed to hold down the keyboard icon to choose between the 3 available.. When I do that I get nothing? I am not a big fan of the iPhone like keyboard so want Compact mode.. I just can't seem to get it. I wasn't asked at the start either when setting up the phone which mode I would like.

Just press the small up-arrow next to the keyboard-icon in the center-bottom of the screen to bring up a menu to select between the different keyboards=)

I somehow toggled the compact keyboard and could not figure out how I did it and had to live with it for a day until I found this post. Almost wanted to do a hard reset. whew~!!!

A few perplexing questions

My HD seems to have the occasional quirk, well two at the moment that are a bit annoying.
Firstly the time on the TF home screen has randomly changed styles twice now. I have no idea why and can't find a way of changing it back (after it changed the first time it changed back again the next day) Any ideas how/why and has anyone else had this?
The other main thing that is now really annoying me is the portrait keyboard has changed from full qwerty to compact qwerty, I have tried changing it back in the "input" setting but it doesn't want to save the setting. Again anyone have an idea why this has changed and any way I can change it back and keep it changed?
Also could anyone tell me what the name of the thin bar at the top of the TF screen is (and where I can find it?) because I would like to delete it if ti's possible.
Thanks

I had the same annoying compact querty problem coming out of nowhere and I found the solution: you can't change it from settings->input, but when you open any app which permits the virtual keyboard(eg: sms/mms) you will notice a little arrow "^" near the virtual keyboard button in the middle. when you press that arrow instead of the virtual keyboard popping up, it will popup a menu where you can select between compact/full querty and there it is, the change remains
for your clock problem, i think you have to slide it back from up to down to show the one you want. And yes the little arrow near sip sign open a finger friendly menu where you can choose compact or not. Hope it helps, in my manual for the HD all about this is tell, but i've read it...
PS: when you have a prob like that post a screenshot, use capsure for example, it work with HD.

How do I change my keyboard?

Hello,
I've been struggling with my keyboard settings since I got my Touch HD. At first, it was a complete QWERTY keyboard. I wanted to change it to a normal keyboard, like on a regular cellphone. I didn't know how to do this. But suddenly, without knowing what the hell I was doing, I accidentally got the keyboard to change. But now my problem is... Well, you know the layout is as such:
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
Shift 0 Symbol
...I have two problems with this. The first is: I can't type any letters, even if I hold the keys down, so basically, I can't text message to anyone. The second problem is that I have no idea how to change it back. If you could just tell me how to change keyboards, AND how to make the regular cellphone keyboard layout WORK (I have chubby fingers), I'd be really, really grateful.
Thank you for your time.
EDIT:
Oh. I see. How irritating. How am I supposed to know that there are actually two buttons in the center button? Oh well. This still doesn't change my ABC / Numeric problem.
Hi Alfa Jez
Assuming that you have not tweaked your phone in anyway.
There are two ways to change the keyboard settings on your phone.
First, is to go to Settings and within settings your Windows menu option (press window flag top left hand corner of the screen, settings is the second from bottom menu item) and then it gives the option of "Input" showing a keyboard and from there it gives you the option to set your "Input Method" as well as other options on word completion etc.
Secondly, you should be able to change the input settings directly from the middle bottom of your screen once your virtual keyboard has been activated. There is a little up arrow which if you press should give you the option of "Touch Input Settings".
Hope this helps. This information is in the manual.
Best wishes
Kaid
Thank you for taking the time to reply, but I'm afraid this doesn't help me. What you've told me so far, I already know.
Although, I have tweaked my phone with HD Tweak. But no big changes at all.
What does your keyboard look like right now?
Are you stuck on a number-only pad or symbols-only pad or do you see letters on the keys?
Here are some pictures. Tell us which one is the one you have right now.
You should be able to switch through these pads via Sym, 123, ABC keys in the different keypads. You also see that the symbols keypad has 13 different pads to scroll through and it can be "locked" (lock key). That causes it to stay there after pressing different keys. When unlocked, it automatically goes to the normal letters/numbers pad after you have entered one symbol.
Well, my problem is that, even though I have the one with the letters, (of course, it's needed to type letters) I can only type numbers. If you see my problem. I can see the letters and the number, but it seems only to want to use the numbers. Even if I hold the keys down, no letters appear.
Hmm, if you what you have is the second picture above and yet you can only type numbers, then I don't really know what to do. On that screen I only get the numbers if I tap and hold for a second. A quick tap gets me the letters.
Maybe someone else might know what is wrong there.
Did this start recently or have you always had that problem on your HD? Or did it start after you installed a certain program or made some kind of registry change?

I suppose you turned on T9 in HD tweak? If so, turn it off, then soft reset. This problem is being brought up on an almost daily basis.......

Did turn it on, yes. But I read other people having the same problem, and they were also told to turn off T9, so I tried that as well. Haven't tried soft resetting, though. (Soft resetting = Turn off, and back on, right? ) Will do!
EDIT:
After soft resetting, it worked! Thanks to both of you, I'm jumpin' up and down as we speak. ^^
Glad it worked. Just a word of caution: as you don´t seem too familiar with windows mobile (soft reset is one of the most used word/actions as it´s still windows...) just be careful when using different kinds of tweaks (HD tweak, advanced config) or modifying the registry directly. Don´t just change/turn on/off something because it sounds good. If you don´t know what you are doing it can mess up your device real bad......
Been there, done that......
I'll be cautious, and try to control my curiosity. ^^
Are you still jumping up and down? Or has the excitement worn off?
I'm glad it works now.

Help me get back my original keyboard

Hi guys, i just installed a trial for Lingvsoft English>Farsi dictionary and the first thing i noticed was my keyboard had changed to something more stylus friend but not finger friendly.
I didn't take much notice to it thinking it was only for that program but noticed it was on every screen from SMS to Notes.
Even going to Settings>Input and changing Keyboard types doesn't work. It is on a setting called "Keyboard" and everytime i drop the menu and choose Full Qwerty and press Ok, it doesn't save and keeps the same setting over and over.
I have even uninstalled the program and soft resetted but it hasn't fixed it up.
I want to get back the original keyboard, please help me out.
try selecting something completely different, like block recogniser or transcriber or something and the restart the device. If it sticks choose try the compact qwerty and then restart. If that sticks too goto full qwert. If none of this works then it sounds like your qwerty has been replaced and you might need a hard-reset.
I couldn't change mine from the keyboard options under settings, it kept reverting back.
When you are in an sms press the little arrow next to the keyboard icon at the bottom of the screen and change it there, it worked for me.

Legend! Thanks that fixed it
Fixed my problem too.
I also had the issue that the keyboard was only inputting numbers - disabled T9 in HD Tweaks - reset then all ok.

how can I go in "HD Tweaks" ?

Android on Vogue; Keyboard now supersized and unusable

I have tried all the various input methods, but now the keyboard is too huge to use. Only the left half shows on my VX6900. If I go into Landscape mode about 2/3 is visible. I don't know what happened. I was holding the Menu button to bring up the keyboard and suddenly it changed and became massive with some extra icons on the bottom left, like one for settings that were not visible previously on the compact keyboard. Is there a way to get it back to normal without cleaning the SD card and starting anew? I would lose info, if so.

Check the resolution set in you default.txt? That could be causing the issue.
The display is fine. All the apps appear fine. I set the default at 320 height 240 width at 120 lcd density. It's been running great. The keyboard is all that has screwed up, and that had been fine.
Are you using the HTC_IME keyboard or the Android keyboard? I had issues with the HTC_IME in landscape too, so I just stopped using it and have been using the basic Android keyboard.
I don't know. I didn't change anything if that's what you're asking. How would I put it back to the Android keypad if that had happened?
i know this sounds dumb, but did you try restarting the phone?
Yes... Do you think I'd be able to unlock a phone and install another operation system and be that dense?

Some of us are that dense (points to self ). Are you using the black QWERTY soft keyboard, or the white one? The white one with multiple layouts (qwerty, phone keypad etc) is the HTC_IME. I haven't had it work right for me in some time. If you long press on an text box, then you should be able to select the keyboard that you're using. Switch to the Android one and see what happens?
I think you had it right before, I think I downloaded something that had a keyboard with it, a theme that didn't install. And it screwed it up. Since I couldn't use the phone at all, I went ahead and just reset the whole thing. It's working now. Thanks for the help though.

sorry for trying to help, i guess i wont next time
Wasn't trying to be a smart ass. Just was frustrated that I couldn't solve the problem and the system.img for the Vogue for 1.5 doesn't exist online anymore, so now I'm running 1.6 which is nice, but now GPS doesn't work. So had a working machine that was stable, now not so much.
oh well, i have the system.img for 1.5 oh well

How to change default onscreen keyboard?

I'm install alternate onscreen keyboard, but can't shut down defautl keyboard. It suppress alternate by priority in input methods list.
Only solution i can think of is to root your phone and get Startup Manager and turn it off in there, I did.
Just press and hold the textbox or writing area, there you change "input method" to swype or samsung keyboard.
If I understand it right, OP wants the chosen input method to stick, so that it do not go back to a different one during soft reset. I'm interested in the solution too. I do not want to remove the default stock keyboard though, as I still want it in some situation.
If I go to Settings, Locale and Text and tick the newly installed keyboard (in my case the Droid X keyboard), then press and hold in an input area and select Input Options and use the new keyboard it stays the default keyboard, even after a soft reset.
If I then change back to the default keyboard by pressing and holding in an input area and selecting the Samsung Keypad, THAT will then stay as the default keypad, even after a soft reset.
The same works for the HTC_IME.
So I fail to see what the problem is.
The main annoyance I have is that neither the Droid X nor HTC_IME have a navigational arrows keyboard like the stock keyboard does. WHY WHY WHY did Samsung not make that menu button an OPTICAL TRACKPAD? They managed it on the Omnia and other smartphones. Without this feature, despite my love of this phone, I am falling out of love with this handset.

Hey, you're right! It does stick. My bad.
Wow, Droid X and HTC_IME must be so good, that you must find it so difficult to give up. I must try them.
I wouldn't bother with HTC iME if I were you: Droid X keyboard is head and shoulders above anything else out there as it uses multitouch to bolster its already rather solid prediction algorithms. for me it is as good as the iphone keyboard. I have REALLY tried to like Swype but still find it clunky in instances when I need to input numbers and letters or very specific words, and I cant swype a long word as quickly as i can tap out the first few letters of a long word and allow word prediction to finish it for me.
As for the default keyboard....well it has some nice features but I find myself getting terribly irritated by it when I really need it to work.
Hi Eaglesteve by the way. remember our many conversations in the HTC Advantage forums? I hope you've found a better device since then! it's amazing how things have moved on since then.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Leoni. Yes, iPhone keyboard is hard to beat. I'll give Droid X keyboard a go then.
Yes, those days on the HTC advantage forum is memorable for me, and I enjoyed the friendship and conversations with folks there. Yes, technology has really changed within a very short time, and I love it. Glad to be living in this generation. You're far more frequent phone changer than I have been, I noticed, almost never missing out on any device. I think as a result you're one of the most open minded and unbiased persons when making comparisons between them, and I enjoy reading your comments all the time.
Hey Leoni, after installing Droid X keyboard, it is not showing up when I go to setting, locale. When I click on the pass-dx2200 icon, I was given the choice of installing PandaHome2, which I did, although I hate the home screen now.
Is there a special procedure to follow before Droid X keyboard would appear on the setting for it to be ticked?
