How do I change my keyboard? - Touch HD General

Hello,
I've been struggling with my keyboard settings since I got my Touch HD. At first, it was a complete QWERTY keyboard. I wanted to change it to a normal keyboard, like on a regular cellphone. I didn't know how to do this. But suddenly, without knowing what the hell I was doing, I accidentally got the keyboard to change. But now my problem is... Well, you know the layout is as such:
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
Shift 0 Symbol
...I have two problems with this. The first is: I can't type any letters, even if I hold the keys down, so basically, I can't text message to anyone. The second problem is that I have no idea how to change it back. If you could just tell me how to change keyboards, AND how to make the regular cellphone keyboard layout WORK (I have chubby fingers), I'd be really, really grateful.
Thank you for your time.
EDIT:
Oh. I see. How irritating. How am I supposed to know that there are actually two buttons in the center button? Oh well. This still doesn't change my ABC / Numeric problem.

Hi Alfa Jez
Assuming that you have not tweaked your phone in anyway.
There are two ways to change the keyboard settings on your phone.
First, is to go to Settings and within settings your Windows menu option (press window flag top left hand corner of the screen, settings is the second from bottom menu item) and then it gives the option of "Input" showing a keyboard and from there it gives you the option to set your "Input Method" as well as other options on word completion etc.
Secondly, you should be able to change the input settings directly from the middle bottom of your screen once your virtual keyboard has been activated. There is a little up arrow which if you press should give you the option of "Touch Input Settings".
Hope this helps. This information is in the manual.
Best wishes
Kaid

Thank you for taking the time to reply, but I'm afraid this doesn't help me. What you've told me so far, I already know.
Although, I have tweaked my phone with HD Tweak. But no big changes at all.

What does your keyboard look like right now?
Are you stuck on a number-only pad or symbols-only pad or do you see letters on the keys?
Here are some pictures. Tell us which one is the one you have right now.
You should be able to switch through these pads via Sym, 123, ABC keys in the different keypads. You also see that the symbols keypad has 13 different pads to scroll through and it can be "locked" (lock key). That causes it to stay there after pressing different keys. When unlocked, it automatically goes to the normal letters/numbers pad after you have entered one symbol.

Well, my problem is that, even though I have the one with the letters, (of course, it's needed to type letters) I can only type numbers. If you see my problem. I can see the letters and the number, but it seems only to want to use the numbers. Even if I hold the keys down, no letters appear.

Hmm, if you what you have is the second picture above and yet you can only type numbers, then I don't really know what to do. On that screen I only get the numbers if I tap and hold for a second. A quick tap gets me the letters.
Maybe someone else might know what is wrong there.
Did this start recently or have you always had that problem on your HD? Or did it start after you installed a certain program or made some kind of registry change?

I suppose you turned on T9 in HD tweak? If so, turn it off, then soft reset. This problem is being brought up on an almost daily basis.......

Did turn it on, yes. But I read other people having the same problem, and they were also told to turn off T9, so I tried that as well. Haven't tried soft resetting, though. (Soft resetting = Turn off, and back on, right? ) Will do!
EDIT:
After soft resetting, it worked! Thanks to both of you, I'm jumpin' up and down as we speak. ^^

Glad it worked. Just a word of caution: as you don´t seem too familiar with windows mobile (soft reset is one of the most used word/actions as it´s still windows...) just be careful when using different kinds of tweaks (HD tweak, advanced config) or modifying the registry directly. Don´t just change/turn on/off something because it sounds good. If you don´t know what you are doing it can mess up your device real bad......
Been there, done that......

I'll be cautious, and try to control my curiosity. ^^

Are you still jumping up and down? Or has the excitement worn off?
I'm glad it works now.

hi im having problem on my x1 whenever i try to use my keyboard now
even i didnt press the blue buttons i can type in numbers and i try many ways to get my keyboard to function poperly. does anyone has this problem?
and is there any solution?
help please anyone???
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP IM DYING TO FIND THE SOLUTION AS THIS IS VERY ANNOYING, I DO NOT WANT TO PERFORM HARD RESET ON IT EVEN AFTER I READ THE MENU IT SAYS NOTHING AOUT IT
Did the problem start after installing a particular application? Try uninstalling each application you've added from the most recent backwards, soft resetting inbetween each uninstallation in case something is causing a conflict.
As a last resort a hard reset* should sort the problem, assuming it's software related. Of course you'll need to reinstall any applications you've got on the phone, and back up any data you want to keep on the phone (I always forget to copy newly added numbers from the phone onto the sim before hard resets, unfortunately ).
*switch the phone off, then hold both silver buttons closest to the screen either side of the optical joystick and switch the phone on while holding the buttons. Keep them pressed until a white screen with blue writing appears. Now follow the onscreen instructions to reset your phone to it's factory default settings.
e: just noticed that you replied while I was writing this. no need to shout! It's an odd problem, and there's probably no one else who's had it, hence no replies. If the problem hasn't been solved after a soft reset, then more than likely a program that's been installed has either taken over a keyboard function, been configured incorrectly, or has overwritten a system file when installing. In which case, like I said, uninstall each program you've installed. If that doesn't work, I think you'll have to hard reset it.
e ii: does the "Fn" icon appear at the bottom of the screen, to the left of the middle, right next to the SIP icon?
I HAVE SOLVED IT BUT I HAVE NO IDEA WHY IT IS FIX
first i slide out my keyboard keep preesing the numbers on microsoft word then i go to dail pad and keep pressing the keyboard numbers then i close the keyboard and began to type with compact qwerty later i slide the keyboard out again and it works............... wtf?????????? is this some bug or what if anyone experience it please tell me. no idea what the hack is happen............ btw thanx anyone who helped me, at least now i dont need a hard reset. (i have been hard resetting my x1 more than 10 times within 3 weeks time................)

even the fn sign is not there it just straight away type out numbers, after a soft reset when slide out the keyboard instantly when i type it has numbers..... really weird....
That is very odd. I thought for a while that maybe the phone thinks it's in the dialpad, so I tried to see if the dialpad running in the background would cause the same thing in word, but mine seemed to be ok.

i think im the first xperia user to encounter this problem i just going mad keep pressing the button and think of related applications that relates both so dailer and microsoft word solve my problem. at first i encounter tthe keyboards button starts from opera mini when i try to type in my address and ended up with numbers
I have almost the same problem i have install TOUCH HD Keyboard and after that i couldn't make èòàù (italian) so after uninstalling that .cab all works well again but no more Virtual Keyboard
you probably have press the function key twice, such that it function-lock your keyboard, so all the keys that you hit will yield the numbers or whatever the function+key is supposed to yield.
just hit the function key again to unlock function lock.

At last no solution right?

A few perplexing questions

My HD seems to have the occasional quirk, well two at the moment that are a bit annoying.
Firstly the time on the TF home screen has randomly changed styles twice now. I have no idea why and can't find a way of changing it back (after it changed the first time it changed back again the next day) Any ideas how/why and has anyone else had this?
The other main thing that is now really annoying me is the portrait keyboard has changed from full qwerty to compact qwerty, I have tried changing it back in the "input" setting but it doesn't want to save the setting. Again anyone have an idea why this has changed and any way I can change it back and keep it changed?
Also could anyone tell me what the name of the thin bar at the top of the TF screen is (and where I can find it?) because I would like to delete it if ti's possible.
Thanks

I had the same annoying compact querty problem coming out of nowhere and I found the solution: you can't change it from settings->input, but when you open any app which permits the virtual keyboard(eg: sms/mms) you will notice a little arrow "^" near the virtual keyboard button in the middle. when you press that arrow instead of the virtual keyboard popping up, it will popup a menu where you can select between compact/full querty and there it is, the change remains
for your clock problem, i think you have to slide it back from up to down to show the one you want. And yes the little arrow near sip sign open a finger friendly menu where you can choose compact or not. Hope it helps, in my manual for the HD all about this is tell, but i've read it...
PS: when you have a prob like that post a screenshot, use capsure for example, it work with HD.

Help me get back my original keyboard

Hi guys, i just installed a trial for Lingvsoft English>Farsi dictionary and the first thing i noticed was my keyboard had changed to something more stylus friend but not finger friendly.
I didn't take much notice to it thinking it was only for that program but noticed it was on every screen from SMS to Notes.
Even going to Settings>Input and changing Keyboard types doesn't work. It is on a setting called "Keyboard" and everytime i drop the menu and choose Full Qwerty and press Ok, it doesn't save and keeps the same setting over and over.
I have even uninstalled the program and soft resetted but it hasn't fixed it up.
I want to get back the original keyboard, please help me out.
try selecting something completely different, like block recogniser or transcriber or something and the restart the device. If it sticks choose try the compact qwerty and then restart. If that sticks too goto full qwert. If none of this works then it sounds like your qwerty has been replaced and you might need a hard-reset.
I couldn't change mine from the keyboard options under settings, it kept reverting back.
When you are in an sms press the little arrow next to the keyboard icon at the bottom of the screen and change it there, it worked for me.

Legend! Thanks that fixed it
Fixed my problem too.
I also had the issue that the keyboard was only inputting numbers - disabled T9 in HD Tweaks - reset then all ok.

how can I go in "HD Tweaks" ?

htc sms input problem

hi, not sure where else to ask this but has anyone ever came across the following issue -
whenever im typing a text message the input is only ever a number, even though it shows text on the virtual buttons, this happens with every form of input with the exceptions of using the stylus and full keyboard
it seems to be locked on numbers, i thought it was the shift key but that only seems to make it go to caps but then you press a and the number 2 appears, its driving me nuts and i cant seem to find anyone else having this problem
anyone help please?
cheers
PS
also just noticed whenever you go into input method options the virtual keys change to numbers outright and you cant change it back to text (ie press abc to go back and nothing happens, the abc button is also greyed out)
thanks

Had a similar problem and using HD Tweak disable T9 Mode for keyboard.
Both HD Tweak & Advanced Config have other very useful tweaks which I recommend. Both attached for your information

hi, i have hd tweak, t9 was disabled, i enabled it, tried typing a message again, there was no input this time, the keys were showing but whenever i pressed them nothing happened, its as if text is completely disabled, i switched off t9 (in hd tweak) and tried it again, once again there were only numbers appearing
help!!
UPDATE
The only modes that DONT work are the phone keypad and compact qwerty, the other modes seem to work ok, unfortunately its the phone keypad i want to use!
As I've also suggested to you elsewhere, try uninstalling HD Tweak entirely - it seems to be the root of these sorts of problems.
I had the same issue. I unistalled HD Tweak and "hey presto!" had myself a working keypad. I suggest you try that same. Cheers.

Typing a nightmare?

If you find that it's really difficult to type using the hd2 - I advise you Align the screen.
The device doesn't make you do this when you first boot it but I found it solved my problem.
go to....
settings >> menu >> all settings >> system >> screen
I advise you not to use a stylus to do this but your finger - may be a bit tricky but if you can touch the crosses accurately enough with your finger you will find this benefits you when using everything.
I also turned on ClearType as I always had that on and default is off.
hope it's not been mentioned already.

Thats really good to know. A lot of people said that with capacitive screens you don't align them but with my Hero I had to.
Very very good news, thanks for this
I think it has a lot to do with the keyboard manager.
I've tried HTC's, Resco's and SPB's keyboard, and SPB is by far the best for fingers, since it does not change letters after you type them, and it even allows full-screen keyboard when you need to type a lot of complicated symbols.
Resco's is too small and makes it hard to type symbols besides letters; HTC's is overly predictive and corrective to the detriment of productivity. SPB just works.
Wow!!! What a diference. You barely even need the predictive keyboard after aligning the screen.
good to know for when it arrives, thanks!
im pretty sure I posted this, but im dead tired, so since im here...
anyone tried this keyboard, http://www.mobiletextinput.com/about.php
yeah someone who had a HD2 before me told me they had to hard reset after trying align..
so I tested it earlier (just to see) and of course it works fine.. typing is now a joy rather than a bear to use !

hard reset would just clear away the setting causing you to do a new alignment, back and fort
think you mean soft reset?

I know EXACTLY what I meant, thank you very much!
the guy who tried the screen align could no longer use the screen, so resorted to a hard reset to get rid of it.
I'm wondering what they did wrong to cause it not to work...

After posting above I did run into some trouble in landscape mode. However, a soft reset got everything working perfectly.
After using resistive screen we need to remember to raise fingers that little bit further when typing. I'm beginning to type pretty fast now without mistakes.
So are people definately finding improvements in accuracy of typing when using aligning feature or is it best to leave it alone?

problems with typing
I did align the screen and turned on the cleartype.
After doing that it was just a tad better than it was before.
And it was a nightmare !!
But i tried to turn cleartype OFF.
And it is alot better now !!
Does anyone find it annoying how sentences don't actually automatically capitalise after using a full stop?
I have 'auto capitalise new sentence' option ticked under input settings too. Oddly, it auto capitalises after the use of '!' and '?' but just not a full stop...
I too am finding this keyboard hard to use. Sometimes impossible. I have aligned the screen and am trying to be as gentle as possible. In fact I find u don’t even have to touch it to set it off. Just hover your finger above the screen. And even hovering your finger above it can cause it to go mad and press every button in sight.
Sometimes if I press backspace repeatedly, it will press m, n, b, and v buttons too for me. I mean that’s about a finger and a half away from where I’m touching.
I have tried using the keypad as the buttons are bigger and again here I find if I press 7 (pqrs) it can press the one button too, and u can see it twitching all of the place when u hold. I held the power button to get the shutdown/lock options screen up, and without even touching the screen it selected silent. I’m finding it very very frustrating. I have been used to using the iPhone 3GS for few months, which I hate, but so far the screen is miles better.
I even opened notepad and drew some lines and on some swipes u can see instead of producing a smooth line it jaggers all over the place. To me it seems over sensitive/broken, but from what others say is this correct? The touch HD input was better than this. But I have no problems using the phone elsewhere than the keyboard.
The phone is great but currently I’m hugely disappointed with the screen. And so its letting the whole unit down.
Am i being useless or does my unit sounds bust?

My HTC Hero does this also, which is quite annoying!
Ok, when the Touch HD was out there was a program which allowed you to increase the sensitivity of the screen, think it was HD Tweak. This improved the sensitivity of the screen quite well.
Maybe there is a registry tweak we can do to turn down the sensitivity of the screen to help out?
Has anyone informed HTC about this yet?
I found typing accuracy slightly worse after running the alignment process which is weird.
The problem is, we're blazing a trail with the HD2 as there are currently no other winmo devices with a capacitive screen. The HTC full qwerty doesn't seem to be ideally suited to capacitive - the keys register presses far too readily and sometimes, as your finger is lifted from the screen, it's very easy to register a press in an adjacent button.
After a couple of days using it, it seems accuracy and a light touch are the order of the day - until HTC (or another enterprising software house) release a keyboard that's actually tailored to the Leo
Is this setting is what need to be changed for changing the sensitivity?
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GWE\Touch\Filter]
