Can I buy applications from places other than Marketplace, what do I need to look for to see if it is compatible. I assumed all on Marketplace would be compatible until I tried to buy spd tv and it said I needed a d pad!
Can I get Iplayer for this phone.
What is a cab file and how do I use it?
Apps
A cab(inet) has lots of files & folders in it.
You copy it to the device, or storage card and run it by clicking it. It then asks you whether you want to install on SD or device, then it installs, sometimes stopping to ask you for input.
You can google for lots of free cabs.
I have been running TomTom for years from cabs I got off rapidshare(free but naughty).
Handango is a website that sells apps.
I don't really know much about buying apps.
I get most of them for free off rapidshare & torrents ; )
I'm having problems when trying to install coreplayer and myplayer from sd card, when selecting cab nothing happens. Has anyone else experienced this or know how to fix this?

My XDA2 now has a Sandisk 512MB card.
I also have Journal Bar, SPB pocket plus, Lextionary, Pocket Atlas, Pocket Stars, Currency Convertor X, a few games, (and a few others which I ran out of memory).
What I want to know is how exactly do I get the programmes to run from the sd card, so that the XDA2 memory isn't used to store them.
I have tried x-backup, and I have tried cutting the files using file explorer to the sd card, but then the programmes do not run from the start menu.
I'm sure it's something simple but please let me in on it!
So near, and yet so far!
well when you install programs using activesync you can choose between
if you want to install it in main mem or storage
some programs dont work though if you install them to the storage
if you dont want to install the programs again you may be able to edit the shortcut and pointing the path to the new location and some programs may also require some regediting for them to work after being moved
if you dont want to edit the shortcuts then you can just make new ones
whats under programs is just which shortcuts that are located in windows\programs
Thanks for the help.. made sure I said no to installing in default directory.. now to see if each programme works.. Thanks for the help!
Similar position
Hi Gumby I'm in a similar position to you in that I just got a 512Mb SD today and I intend to rebuils my system with appropriate applications on the SD. Have you found out yet which work from the SD and which only work from ROM?
It would be halpful for everyone if we could get a list of what should go where.
There seems to be a ton of posters here who know a lot about the Mogul and phones/PDAs in general...so I figured I'd pose the question to you all.
I'd love suggestions for what I should download...so if possible, could you respond with answers to the following questions:
1) What program?
2) What does it do? Please state the purpose/usefulness.
3) How do I download and install it? Link to find the download?
4) What, if any, existing program will be unnecessary once I download it? And can that unnecessary program be deleted?
I've never had a PDA, so any and all suggestions are welcome. I'll be using the PDA predominantly for calls, web-surfing, and messaging.
Also keep in mind that I'm new to all of this, and I'm a complete moron...I don't understand a damned thing. So talk to me like I'm a 5-year-old. I don't know abbreviations like SMS or MMS, or whatever.
Thanks in advance, I appreciate you taking time out to help me.
Well one of the programs I use the most on my phone is The Core Media Player (TCPMP) it is by far the best media player for Pocket PC's and can play most file types. you can get more information from here, and if you want to download it just respond saying yes and ill post a link. Don't download it from the site as I have a newer version than on that site.
http://www.freewareppc.com/multimedia/tcpmp.shtml
i hate to be the one to say it, but after seeing the views on this go up and no replies i'm just going to say what everyones been thinking. look around? theres hundreds of threads with stuff to download for your phone, you just have to look a little
Most of our WM devices are very similar. As such, pretty much everything that's been said before still applies, so check the wiki, where you should find many articles related to this conundrum.

Yeah, can you post a link? Thanks, I appreciate it.
And to you other two, I understand that...like I said, though, I'm a beginner and a lot of stuff goes over my head. So I figured I'd create a thread and can ask questions and whatnot.
It's fine if people don't want to respond, though. Life will go on. And some people have been nice enough to take time to explain stuff to me, so it's ok.

Have you got .8?
I've heard rumors of its existance, but can't find it yet. Still running 0.72... If that's the newer version that you've got, would you mind sharing it?
Here it is v.81, sorry it wouldn't let me upload to the site like normal so i put it on megaupload, to install it just download the file and copy it to your memory card or phone memory, then open it with file explorer on your phone and install it to either the device or memory card. Then open it from start/programs/media player

Thanks a lot killer, I appreciate it.

Sprite Backup
Sprite Backup is a must! Even if you keep it connected to your ActivSync PC daily, it is good to have a baseline you can always restore to, and I'd suggest having it backup to your SD card, and rename one of them every few weeks so you have something to restore from in case it gets completely fragg'd.
Another one is Skyfire (Beta) mobile internet browser.
I'd also suggest you get Microsoft Reader or EReader so you can have pocket novels on your phone (it's a nice thing to have when you're waiting for something). Also, rip your DVD's to your PC and encode them to WMV format and your ActivSync can put them on your SD card...
All of these tricks are discussed here in the forum. Hope this helps.
I will just give titles of some of the apps that I use. Google them to find where and what they do.
PIM: PocketInformant
Wallet: CodeWalletPro 6
Geocaching: GeoScout
maps: Google Maps, Live Search
Bible: Bible Reader
Today Plugin: HHC Home Customizer (will download HTC home plugin)
Shell: SBP Mobile Shell v.2
Browser: Opera Mini
Regedit: PHM RegEdit
File: Resco File Explorer
Video: TCPMP
Navigation: TomTom7
There are a bunch of other little apps that just make life easy, go to Handango.com and find what you need your phone to do for you.

Look for downloads in CAB form and if asked to choose a platform choose ARM.
CAB files you move onto your SD card and then navigate to them in file explorer and tap to run them.
Sometimes a file is an EXE - normally these you run on the PC and next time you sync with your device it gets installed.
Very occasionally you get a Windows Mobile EXE that you run on the device.
If asked where to install the programme choose SD card rather than the device memory. (EXCEPT if it is an application that will run all the time on the today screen - like a special theme, weather application, email application etc.)
With the TyTn I would not load many applications into device memory - it hasn't got that much to begin with.
Always use a tool to properly close running applications. Just tapping the X does not close them, they continue running in the background gobbling up memory. HTC has an app. to do this but there are several Magicbutton etc etc.

There are links scattered across this site, but mainly (though not exclusively) for ROM upgrading.
Hi,
I just bought a HTC HD2 (Leo). I've looked around in all the forums and can't find the info I'm looking for plus all the answers to all the other questions I have.
My first question is, how can I save directly to the SD card instead of the phone memory? I've looked everywhere to find an answer to that and I've even contacted the HTC support (in Sweden) but no luck. Does anybody know? Is it possible? I have a ton more questions, but I can only ask one at a time, if i understood the rules correctly.....
Sorry, but what are you trying to save, an example may help. Usually you are asked where you want to save something. Also treat yourself to Resco Explorer at some point. Makes working with files so much easier.
For example, when I send files from my old phone (photos, music etc.) it just saves it on the phone memory. It fills up my phone completely and at once. I had to move the files to the SD memory but everything didn't fit on the phonememory. I don't get any question where I want to save my files. Is there any way (that someone knows about) where I can change that? And thanks for the tip about the download, I will check that out! And I can't whatch divx movies on my phone - any tips?
Hmmm, see I used Windows Media Player to sync music and photos and it gave me the option where to sync to. I guess the problem is if you are going direct from Phone to phone you aren't getting the same level of configuration.
I believe Coreplayer is for DivX.
Free DivX layer here
Thank you for the link!! Been looking for that one. Since I'm new to windowsphones, do you know of any link (tutorial) where I can learn how to install coreplayer (and other apps - like flash and others)?
Things will either come as Install packages that are run from your PC while the device is connected via Activesync or WMDC. Alternatively applications are downloaded as .cab files which you stick somewhere on your storage card and run them from within File Explorer.
Thank you for helping a novice out! I'm gonna try it out!
I'm new here so please bare with me. I just bought a used Sprint Mogul and I'm looking to "play" with it a bit. Nothing real crazy as I've been scanning this forum over the last few days waiting for my phone to come in the mail and I just want to keep it simple. I have the programs that I want to load on the phone and I don't need to flash the ROM or anything like that to use these. My question is this. Do I need to unlock my phone to add these programs and how do I load them to my phone ? Do I need a special program to do this or can I just use active sync ? The instructions I have to load the programs are pretty simple but they do not tell me how to install them. Just the order to install them and soft reset etc. I have found some really cool things on this forum about my phone but as much as I have learned I also have alot of unanswered questions as well.
Thanks in advance.
Fairly simple....
If the program you want to install is an .exe file, then you will hook your phone up with the usb cable and let active sync do its thing. Then double click the file to install. Active sync will prompt you with the rest.
If the file is a .cab file, then transfer the file the way it is to your microsd card using the active sync browse. Browse to the folder you want to put it then drag and drop or copy/paste. Then on the phone, tap start/programs/ file explorer. Go to where the .cab file is and tap it! Thats all!
If you install a program you dont want installed anymore you can un-install it through start/settings/system remove programs.
Remember... the programs you use every time your phone is on... like dialer skins, today screen themes, rintones, etc install to device memory! Other programs like games, mp3 songs, videos, ebooks, etc can go to the microsd card!!
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. Sounds pretty simple. I have another question. This is going to sound pretty dumb I'm sure but I'll ask anyway. The programs I'm going to load...will they over write the programs already on the phone ? I understand there is internal memory and this phone seems to be just like a pc. And I know that when memory gets low or used then things tend to slow down and run bad. BTW the programs I'm going to install are Manila2D and a few others. Don't know much about them but a friend of mine had them put on his Mogul and I like the way it looks and runs compared to the "stock" setup.
Thanks again.
I have another question to ask. Is there a way to back up your contacts list ? If I understand it right.....a "hard reset" will wipe your contacts list along with everything else you have put on the phone and not the sd card. Right ?
