A little bit of searching on this forum would have given you plenty of answers.
In short, the hardware is capable of running Windows 7, but the question remains if HTC will release an Official Upgrade for the LEO.
If not, there will probably be someone (or many) at XDA making a Windows 7 ROM.

The final version of WM7 probably won't be released until a year from now, so I'm not sure how relevant WM7 is to someone buying a phone now. The HD3 will probably be one of the first phones to run WM7.

This has been already discussed in this forum

Windows 7 for HD2 ?

I just want to know, how far is this a rumor that HD2 will have the option of upgrading itself to windows mobile 7 !
It´s still just a rumor. On the other hand, a Microsoft spokesperson most recently announced another delay of Windows Mobile until end of 2010.

I would say there is virtually no chance at all that there will ever be an official HTC upgrade to WM7. There will almost certainly be an unofficial one created by some of the ROM "chefs" here at XDA.
The rumor has been that HD2 owners will be some of the first to get WM7 from HTC...
The most important question for me to buy a HD2, is whether I can upgrade to WM7, because I do not want to be spending so much money, for 3 months from now, have the HD2 obsolete with WM6.5.
If only HD2 had good hopes for the WM7, what do you think?

Exactly. I think that answer is as accurate as it gets right now.
@pack21
I think jayom was referring to Windows 7 and not Windows Windows MOBILE 7.
Interesting idea - processor should be up to it - would need to find more RAM though

Windows 7 does not run on ARM processors.
I emailed HTC directly last week regarding this, and here's the response I got:-
"Thank you for your enquiry about HD2 What we do it ROM Upgrades from our website, however 6.5 windows mobile has only been out 2 months and windows mobile 7 hasn't even been developed. This wont be out until next november at the earliest. But when it is available it will be a free download"

I just want to know if Windows 7 will let me do less soft reset in the future, because HTC has a bad idea to hide the reset point in the cache back of battery. I need to do soft reset once or twice a day.

Do you want windows 7 to come with an extra hardware button, or are you looking for a software solution? If you're happy with a software solution, there's one in the themes & applications area, in the stickied threads.
I'm thinking we'll find out by March 2010, when MIX is on. This is when MS have said they'll finally talk about WM7. Until then, it's all just speculation.
will the windows phone 7 be released for HD2? when?
Highly doubtful HTC will update HD2 to WinPhone 7 cause they are releasing HD3/HD7 but i hope there will be xda release i think it's highly probable, just need to wait few months.
so how can I see WP7 on youtube with HD2... someone must had upgraded already or am I wrong?

No, someone has successfully managed to get a hacked version running on an HD2, this has not been stable enough as yet for him to release it on xda. There will NOT be an official upgrade from htc. The button configuration of the HD2 does not meet Microsoft's strict requirements and so htc have released the HD7 instead.
Officially, the HD2 is stuck with WinMo 6.5.
Unofficially, the genius' here on xda will have it running in a month or two, maybe even less

HD2 tweak from Omarket comes with a soft reset button i think.
Talking of buttons
For those keen to get WP7 going on their HD2; for me I'm not sure yet.
Do you know there's no phone button on WP7? I really miss that on my WP7 device (vs my HD2) - it takes a button press, a tap, and then another tap to get the phone keypad showing. Of course if some clever soul can get WP7 going on an HD2 AND map the phone button it may just be wonderful.
There's also a big reliance on buttons in WP7 - certainly the back button. I might be missing something but you can't just seem to swipe your finger across the screen to go back. I don't want to have to use the back button all the time. What's the point of having a touch screen phone if you have to always use the button. I never use it on my hd2 as the applications (or task manager) always provide a way on screen. And of course no (general) multi-tasking across apps (and therefore no quick task manager/switcher) means you're using that button a lot.
And text messaging without Swype? (not on WP7 as far as I know) It feels so two years ago!

[OUTDATED] HTC Confirmed WM7 coming to HD2

i assume we can end all speculations now as to whether HD2 will receive Windows Mobile 7 Upgrade. here are the sources
http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=11753
Quote "Great news for current and future HTC HD2 owners! HTC has confirmed, via their official Russian twitter channel, that the HTC HD2 will be getting an official Windows Mobile 7 upgrade."
http://pocketnow.com/rumor/htc-confirms-that-hd2-gets-windows-mobile-7-on-twitter
Quote "We just got an interesting news tip pointing to the HTC Twitter account from Russia. The tweet mentions that the only HTC device currently on the market to receive a Windows Mobile 7 upgrade will be the HD2. And we've suspected this for a while, considering that the HD2 meets Microsoft's hardware requirements for Windows Mobile 7. Here's what they said:
for Diamond 2 firmware is not planned. Of the existing communicators on the market, only the HD2 firmware to get WM7."

Quote "will HTC HD2 - the first Windows Mobile phone with multitouch - get official upgrade to Windows Mobile 7?
Yes, it will be announced shortly after Microsoft will announce Windows Mobile 7 to the public."

Usefull or not ?
Windows mobile 7 will be released at the end of 2010. If i'm not wrong. So i guess most of HD2 users will be looking onto a brand sexiest new HTC device.
!
I think the HD2 is powerful enough and sexy enough to be on the top even at the end of 2010.
Also, with the talented chefs in this site we will see the WM7 on our device long before it is officially released. To me thats a win win deal

From what i see, the only limitation HD2 will face is the built in storage. most of us are already aware of the fact that the internal storage, though quoted 512MB from the specs, only 150MB+ is available to the end user, whereas WM7 specs require at least 1GB. the rest of the components are already ahead of time. the best android device in 2010 is only on par in terms of specs with HD2.

With this particular spec issue, should we expect that memory limitation to cause problems for the ROM chefs attempting to port WM7 to the HD2 in 2010?

Awesome news, I am glad I didn't buy N900.
Probably not as we can assume that the HD2 will also be on the list of test (and demo) devices HTC will be distributing to their techs and testers.
Same goes for Microsoft, they'll need some kind of hardware to test their builds on. Sure they'll have test devices of the unreleased kind also but you can't really use those in public
my point being, if the winmob 7 beta's start leaking, I expect them to be coming with full support for our HD2's since the beta will most likely be ripped off of one to start with.
my 2 cents

Heh, you know what I meant.
Maybe I am wrong but want is the point of having a new windows mobile 7 on our phone if we are just going to be use the excellent HTC Sense UI? Its like when titanium came out, the majority of chose to use Sense/TouchFlo as it was better in terms of eye candy and function. Windows mobile 7 will I guess have new menus and finger friendliness just like 6.5.3 but Sense will still cover up the majorty of Windows mobile 7 UI/OS. Do you get what I am trying to say here? I doubt it would be so amazing for me to disable Sense. I love Sense.

they are only talking about wp7 series development and apps no phones will be mentioned
Did you see Engaged Show with Aron Woodman form Microsoft? If you don't, watch it! Host ask "It will be upgrade for HD2?" Answer:"More information at MIX10".
i think its highly likely that windows 7 makes it to hd2. for a couple of reason if not then why would he say to wait for mix10, second adobe would know what what where and why they are working flash 10 for. i mean they are specific with the devices getting adobe 10 not android 2.1 but nexus. last but not least window7 is late to the show if a plateform has the juice to run it. i think they will best served to get it on as many phones as possible asap. as the apps will give them money this time not the os. more phone with the os potentially more apps to be sold
I heard that WinMo 7 wasn't coming to the HD2 because it did not qualify. The stated reason was that MS has changed the HW requirements for WinMo 7 in that any WinMo 7 phone can only have 3 buttons at the bottom. The HD2 has every other requirement except that; it has 5 buttons at the bottom. Now, I have an HD2 and want WinMo 7 on it. but that was the word I saw recently. I hope the article was wrong. I will find the link and post it (if that is proper.)

Actually I'd say it's more related to the fact Windows Phone 7 min requirements requires 8GB of internal flash memory, since Apps wont be installable to the SD card.

That was the most 'legit' statement of the HD2 getting 7 Series till a few weeks ago...
BUT, It went like this:
-FIRST, they said the 1st Windows Mobile device to get flash 10.1 will be the HTC HD2.
-THEN, they said that they are not developing Flash 10.1 for Windows Mobile 6.5 anymore, because it is missing some 'important stuff' blabla. They are going to focus on getting flash on 7 Series.
AKA, the HTC HD2 is not getting 7 Series, nor Flash 10.1. Which again, was working quite well in that video Adobe showed us a few days before MWC.
sad to say but it think this phone has just died............. smh oh well i get my nexus one 2morrow.......

This was posted weeks ago.
And, for the record, only an idiot would interpret the original posts on the Adobe forum in this way, and only a gullible, unthinking person would repost the story without checking the original forum posts that were the source of the "story".
What happened was that, back in January, Adobe was still planning to release FlashPlayer 10.1 for WM6.x. They announced this, and mentioned that the HD2 would be the first WM6 phone to run it. By February, there had been a major change of plans, and the release of FlashPlayer for WM6.x had been cancelled, thus invalidating the January announcement entirely. Adobe therefore posted a new announcement saying that they had cancelled the WM6.x project, but that they intended to develop FlashPlayer for WP7S.
That's all.

sorry, it's impossible to port windows phone 7 to jade because of hardware requirements.
AFAIK only possible device to be upgraded is the htc hd2 (but not on the official way, of course).
best chance to get the new OS is buying on of the first devices, which are released in october (europe) and november (usa).

HTC HD2 and Windows Phone 8

Well,
What do u guys Think? Can the HD2 handle Wp8? or maybe only Windows Phone 7.8? Im acutally going to base my desicion of buying a new phone upon whether HD2 will get windows phone 8 or not.
All devs busted there asses working on the HD2, i mean what more can we ask from them?
7.8 yes but WP8 no... WP8 have different hardware.... maybe someone cook lite version but look how many problems we have with drivers for now...
so true, there are so many bugs and more and more devs drop their developing for HD2 and moves on to new devices, which means we are in a down hill and it will be harder and harder to fix many bugs and strange behaviours. Correct me if im wrong, but I guess we should be happy if we even get WP 7.8 anytime before summer of 2013

We said this so many times before, until I lost count loll. Just because there is another phone with smiliar specs as the HD2 doesnt mean that all we need is move the software and we are good to go...There is alot of diffrences in the code (not to mention Windows CE => Windows NT) between WP 7.5 and WP8, I think we need to rewrite some drivers!!!

It´s true. Drivers could be diferent of the HD2, but also is posible that the HTC Rio have got similar chipset and the drivers ports could be easy. I don´t lose the hope.
HTC Rio is a S4 device and our is S1.
There is still hope though, WP8 has more documentation compared to Windows Phone 7.

no chance for WP8 on HD2... especially when i see today presentation of Lumia 920....

I love it when the " all knowing" members try to make fun of someone's question. Instead of just replying with a "yes" or "no" someone always has to be a real jerk. They probably will make a wp8 ROM for the HTC hd2, because people enjoy it.

It's not just people enjoying it. Sure, it has its weight, but remember, this ain't Android. We have the source code of almost nothing.
If we can find a device with very similar (read, almost all) hardware, we might have a chance of using it's drivers on HD2.
Has it stands, i hardly doubt there will be a single core, adreno200 WP8 device. Even on WP7 we're strugling with driver incompatibility. Why do you think we have such weird battery usage? And that camera trick? That's a exploit that's probably reseting some driver/process and lowering our battery consumption.
Where there's a will, there's a way... it's not impossible, just very difficult and highly improvable.
the porting of 7.8 has been very simple for devs, i think that we have serious possibilities to see WP8 on hd2!
