I know for a fact that 1-click root does not work for G1, I was just wondering if the fix was also done for the mt3g. My educated guess, would be yes, but I just want to hear confirmation. If I can't use the 1-click method, does anyone have an alternative besides the really long method. Basically, I'm trying to root my co-workers mt3g, from work. I don't have access to adb, fastboot, etc. I root a lot of my co-workers G1's, never did mt3g.
...anyone?
If your phone came with stock android 1.5 then you can use the unroot method to get back to 1.5 then one click will work.
if you unroot and its 1.6 stock then I'm unsure.
It works. I was always skeptical of rooting my phone but I did it two days ago. I got my phone originally with cupcake and I receive the OTA update to donut. This is what I did to get root..
First follow this to get back to cupcake:

Follow this to get root:
http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/22/how-to-root-the-mytouch-3g-or-g1-in-one-click/
Loading a custom rom:

It was really simple and I had no problems. I skipped the App2SD because I only have the original MicroSD card so I can't vouch for that. But everything else worked perfect. I'm currently running Cyanogen 4.2.1 with Enoch Theme which can be found at:

Hey all,
A month or so ago I rooted my phone to Evil Eris 1.1 so I could experience 2.1, etc. Well since the announce of the OTA update, I recently decided to unroot since I haven't really felt like taking advantage of the superuser permissions, overclocking, etc.
So I followed an unroot guide on Androidforums.com in order to unroot. I'm running on a mac and followed every step correctly, had no problems until it came time to reboot my phone.
I got a stock 1.5 lockscreen but upon unlocking, saw the standard 2.1 wallpaper and received 2-3 different "Sorry!" Error messages about the processes "com.htc.provider" and "android.process.media". So pretty much, what the hell, did I brick my phone and is there anything I missed or that I probably did wrong? Is this guide a piece of **** scam?
EDIT
Much thanks to T.C.P. for the help! We ended up flashing a 2.1 root rom and it seemed to fix everything.

anytime man
I've read over the forums quite a few times and am stumped. For some reason i cannot get rooted again after SBF flashing to 2.1. I've used the one click root program and while it says the root was successful, i go into adfree, titanium backup, and wifi tether and all tell me that i am not rooted. Super permissions doesn't seem to work either.
I've flashed my phone six times and have had the same results, so i was wondering if anyone else had this problem or could help me out. I just want to root and get back to 2.2 again, but i don't see why I'm having such difficulties when I've had success before in the past. I'm trying to give all the information i can, but there isn't really much to it. I followed all the steps in the HOW TO downgrade 2.2 to 2.1 link in this very forum.
If anyone can help me or tell me whats going on, I'd be in their debt forever.

Six times? Did you try the 7th????
http://alldroid.org/Default.aspx?tabid=40&g=posts&m=5164#5164
But anyways...did you try to root in manually instead of doing it with one click?
Ok the seventh time was in fact the charm. I just upgraded to 2.2 without root and then SBF flashed to 2.1 again and now when i root, it actually takes and adfree tells me im rooted and super permissions kicks in. I could just not figure out what was going on because it didn't make any sense. It still doesn't, but hey problem solved so i'm not gonna speculate. Anyways thanks for the time.
So I know that you can use the universal androot app to root the MT3G 32b. I did it and installed CM6. I didn't like it, so I flashed the original 1.5 image, successfully unrooting. I then received my ota 1.6 update and I'm back to normal.
However, I miss two things: the wifi tether app and being able to bring my clock up to 528 mHz (where it belongs). I am considering using androot to enable these two functions (and not flash a ROM, but stick with stock).
My question is this: when/if tmobile ever pushes that promised 2.2 update, will I be able to get it, or will I need to flash 1.5 again to totally unrooting? I remember that when I had androot on there before, even when I clicked unroot, the superuser permissions icon stayed in the app drawer. I just want to do these two things on stock 1.6 and still be able to receive any potential future firmware otas.
Anyone know if that will work okay?
Thanks!
If your on stock firmware i can imagine it should come through its when your rooted it won't come through because it blocks it. But yes if you were able to get the OTA when you unrooted than yes you should be able to see the OTA if and when its released. But IMHO Root is the best way to go =)

I'm currently doing what you're proposing and am fairly happy with it. Perhaps we already discussed this in another thread? From what I've read, I *THINK* the update will come through, but it will probably wipe out the root access.
Worst case scenario, when we hear that others are getting their update, we can backup, unroot and go back to donut, and collect our OTA updates that way. Not THAT big a pita.
Seriously? I can not find anything for the life of me!!! Has ANYONE found a way to unroot Unrevoked 3.21 if rooted AFTER accepting the OTA (3.29)??? If unrevoked puts out a root exploit without telling anyone how they obtain root, why wont they provide anyone with how to unroot it? Seriously make me so irritated because I see a bunch of people who rooted with UR3 and now need to unroot for various reasons; however, it seems almost impossible at this point...
I know there are a lot of people against unrevoked but nonetheless this is still a PROBLEM the needs to be RESOLVED.
Anybody have any answers or solutions?
Grab the RUU and flash the phone?

From what has been said in recent posts the RUU does not work nor does the pc36img that was posted in the 2 step unrooting guide in the devolopment section.
From my experience in doing this, you need the Unrevoked S-ON tool, which you can find here.
I have found that downloading the RUU and running it twice tends to solve the problems.
I think it might not connect to the bootloader on the first time, just run the RUU again and it should work it's magic. I would recommend a full wipe of system/cache/dalvik-cache after applying the S-ON tool and then running the RUU.
EDIT: This will revert your entire phone to stock, so don't do it without knowing that it will cause you to lose root and possibly not gain it again.
Whoops... posted in the wrong spot.

I used the above guide to restore mine back to factory BUT the guide is mistaken on steps.
You WILL need to preform all steps regardless of the style of root. At least thats what it took for me to get back to stock.
Forget the red text and start at #1 and work to #15 for success.
Once unrooted you will be at the version prior to 3.70 and then you will get the OTA update to bring you current.
So over the past few days I have been doing alot of research on rooting my phone. I have watched videos and read almost every thread concerning it. I understand the advantages and disadvantages of it. I have never done this before, but I am more than competent enough to follow the directions. I have taken it as far as using visionary and temp rooting my phone. I have a file manager downloaded, and a terminal emulator downloaded. If I go through with it I plan on following the directions in the thread using the gfree method. Ok, with that being said, my only real question is..if I follow the directions, obviously making sure my phone is charged as well, what are the chances of me bricking my phone? Is it incompetence that will create a brick? Or is it something that following the directions correctly will easily avoid?
just do it. -nike
follow directions and youll be fine. thats what i did
Yeah, it's pretty hard to brick your phone. One word of caution though: if you decide to flash the engineering bootloader, screwing up that command WILL brick your phone. Check it, re-check it, and do it over again just to be sure you've typed it properly.
Yea, not trying to get that in depth into it, just want to run some STABLE custom ROM's. I have spent the past 2 hours setting up adb and getting my phone to accept commands. Starting to get comfortable with that. I am really new to all of this, so I am trying to learn as much as I can before I jump into it.
UPDATE: Just need a couple more people to chime in on this. Like I said, I have ADB setup, my phone is accepting commands (rebooted over adb to test) I have visionary, I can temp root with no problem. I have read over the instructions, and understand them fully. I am not going to flash the engineering bootloader, just want to permroot to flash custom rom's and delete bloatware and such. So just doing permroot, is there a chance I can brick my phone?
as long flash a revovery image. And dont mess with the radio file you should be okay.

Alright, thanks for the help, I am obviously a noob...Flashing the recovery is done right on the ROM Manager App right? And there is no way to accidentally mess with the radio?

yes it can be done with clockwork ROM manager.
And no the radio has to be done on purpose.

Thanks for the help, It took me 2 days but I grew a pair and did it. Followed the directions on the guide and worked perfectly. Deleted Visionary, rebooted into hboot and have S off, went into my terminal emulator and still have superuser access. Thanks again!

You really should flash the Engineering bootloader. It makes it harder to brick your device in the future.
It took a bunch of reading, but I rooted my phone and my wife's phone using the gfree method, and installed the engineering bootloader.
Then, a month or so later, I upgraded to CM7. CM7, while still beta, is tons better than the stock firmware. I was going to do Ice Glacier, but developement stopped on it, and ultimately I wanted to be on CM anyway.
Better battery life, tons more features, no reason to complain.
Just do it. TMO should make CM stock on these phones.
