[Q] Universal Androot and OTA on 32b MT3G - myTouch 3G, Magic General

So I know that you can use the universal androot app to root the MT3G 32b. I did it and installed CM6. I didn't like it, so I flashed the original 1.5 image, successfully unrooting. I then received my ota 1.6 update and I'm back to normal.
However, I miss two things: the wifi tether app and being able to bring my clock up to 528 mHz (where it belongs). I am considering using androot to enable these two functions (and not flash a ROM, but stick with stock).
My question is this: when/if tmobile ever pushes that promised 2.2 update, will I be able to get it, or will I need to flash 1.5 again to totally unrooting? I remember that when I had androot on there before, even when I clicked unroot, the superuser permissions icon stayed in the app drawer. I just want to do these two things on stock 1.6 and still be able to receive any potential future firmware otas.
Anyone know if that will work okay?
Thanks!

If your on stock firmware i can imagine it should come through its when your rooted it won't come through because it blocks it. But yes if you were able to get the OTA when you unrooted than yes you should be able to see the OTA if and when its released. But IMHO Root is the best way to go =)

I'm currently doing what you're proposing and am fairly happy with it. Perhaps we already discussed this in another thread? From what I've read, I *THINK* the update will come through, but it will probably wipe out the root access.
Worst case scenario, when we hear that others are getting their update, we can backup, unroot and go back to donut, and collect our OTA updates that way. Not THAT big a pita.

Does Rooting and/or reflashing prevent the next OTA update?

There is allegedly a new OTA update on the way, enabling 720p video, among other things.
Will rooting or rooting+recovery reflash prevent the phone from updating? If it doesn't, would I have to re-root the phone after the update?

If I was you, I would simply wait for the OTA to come out and let our AMAZING DEVS get a crack at it and download the rooted version.
I would love to have the 720p and new boot animation and mobile hotspot. But i would rather have root than any of those. Already have wireless tether. But love the new boot animation....hmm. what to do.... can't wait i have a feeling once the DInc gets stocked back up and they can advertise it we will get alot of devs behind it bc the droid x supposedly has a encrypted bootloader. Not looking so good for those who were ready to drop the DInc.

This update is supposed to include wireless N, 720p video, wireless tethering, and the droid eye boot animation. Since I already have the wireless tether app for my rooted Inc, I'm wondering what would happen if I accepted to receive this OTA update? Anyway, I agree that having root supersedes all of these features, so I will wait for the download. My question is, about how long does it usually take from the time the OTA update is released until the dev's have it ripped and ready for us to download? Thanks!

It has something to do with a file called otacerts.zip in etc/security
I think the Certinstaller.odex in system/app has something to do with it do...
I'm not sure what needs to be done with them, but when modified it will block OTA
dont rename the otacerts.zip. it will kill your battery life constantly checking itself over and over.
OK I've been told to just wait for the official ota froyo update before I root. And that if I root before that I wont get the update sent to me. But I've also been told that if I wait for the official ota update I wont be able to use unrevoked forever.
please help me!!! I'm so confused. and I've looked everywhere else and I keep getting different answers.

It's not that you won't be able to use unrevoked-forever, it's that you won't have a way to flash a custom recovery system to the phone to actually FLASH the forever file.
I recommend the following since it seems you want an official update as opposed to the RUU.
1. Perform the unrEVOked root
2. Flash unrEVOked forever
3. Flash the Stock Recovery back to the phone.
4. Hurry up and wait for the OTA.
5. Upon receiving the OTA, install. You will lose your root privileges. No worries!
6. After installing the OTA, flash ClockworkMod back to your phone
7. Use ClockworkMod to flash a root payload file (contains su and Superuser.apk)
8. Bask in Rooted/Official 2.2 Froyo goodness.
From my research, the OTA MUST have the stock recovery to install. What you will have done here is provided an "Official" platform for the OTA to download, check signatures, and install all while having S-OFF. As long as S-OFF is invoked, you can continue to replace the recovery from ClockworkMod to Stock Recovery (Android 2e) whenever you need to.
S-OFF is what makes this all possible, God Bless the bastards at unrEVOked, would like to take 'em to Peter Luger's one day!
Ok thanks man haha. I've only had this phone for two day and I rooted as soon as I got it. But then unrooted because I was that I wouldn't get froyo.
And yes thank you UNREVOKED FOREVER and, also thank rdmerck for telling me I was completely lost.

rooted ota

Will there be a rooted ota for people who didn't install it or never got it. I rooted my phone and would like the better radio in hopes I will get more cell bars
There's already the option to root if you already applied the OTA update or are planning to.

i dont understand what u mean i have perm root without the ota. If i install the ota it will break root. Will i have to go thru the whole process again if i do this? I know on the mytouchslide when they came out with an ota they just rooted it so it wouldnt break the current root
i havent tried perm root yet. however search this site for 'visionary' root, which is all u really need for now. i had visionary root installed along with several root only apps (titanium backup, cachemate, setcpu, several others) and the OTA installed while my phone was rooted with absolutely no problems.
I installed the ota over the perm root and now I have no superuser permissions. When I try to run visionary it says my phone is already rooted yet I cannot run apps that require root or get the # in termal can anyone help with this
lol
the "#" denotes root access lol...... (coming from a marginal linux background..)

Have you tried reapplying s-off?
I am also interested in getting a solution because right before I rooted my phone I started getting ota update notifications for my phone and now I cant upgrade my phone but the notifications continue to persist. So I figure if I can get a rooted update or delete something, I can get rid of notifications.
ok i got it working what i did was do what somesaid in the begining and that was to follow the guide that doesnt use visionary for perm root. I think its call temp to perm root. I always had the s-off just not the perm root. everything is fine now
At least you were able to apply the update. I tried doing that and Clockworks Recovery halted it because some signature was verified or something.

I didnt use clockworks recover i used the orginal. It just made me loose root and not s-off so i used the temp-too-perm root to get it back because visionary was saying my phone was already rooted. I believe I was getting this cause i had rooted without the ota the first time. The second time i used the ota.ko Instead of the preota.ko because i used this when i didnt update to the ota on the first run.
Oh, okay. Thanks for that. I'm currently in the same boat you were in. I applied the OTA and it's reporting S-OFF, Visionary is saying I'm rooted, but certain things aren't working.
In the process of getting it fixed.
EDIT: Went through the same process you did and I'm all good to go. I was able to apply the OTA update after rooting it and then re-rooted it.
so how exactly did you root you perma root your phone again after ota.
i have perma root right now, its pre-ota, i do want to install ota though.. would i have to go back and do the manual perma-root with the "ota" files now instead of the other ones. im just confused and want to clear this up before i do anything stupid. thanks!

Any OTA updates in the future cause issue to phone

Newbie here.
I just rooted my phone and install Skyraider 3.5.
I love it so far.
My question is, if Verizon sends out an OTA, will that cause any issue to my Incredible?
I have already made a backup for that reason and would I be able to restore it or I will have to start all over again?
Thanks
No.

You won't even get a notification for an OTA if you're on any other ROM besides the stock Verizon one. Don't worry about it
You can block future ota if u want. Using root explorer go to /system/etc/security and change otacert.zip to otacert.zip.bak
Inc SR 3.5, 40GB, 1800mah

good to know.
thnx
WELL, some ROMs will still get OTA updates, but not notifications about it. Also your on XDA, youll get the OTA from here before its even out.
this morning, I saw notification for update and got scared.
The updates were of ROM Manager and Wirefly Backup apps.
Everything is looking good.
I have a rooted DINC with the stock ROM. I rooted prior to Verizon pushing out the latest OTA update, which I believe just included a bunch of bloatware. I'd like to go ahead and receive that update anyway so I can have the latest stock ROM and to stop those pesky update messages from popping up. Currently, I guess since my phone is rooted, I cannot update. So here are the options I can think of:
1. Unroot, receive update, reroot (not my favorite option, would like to avoid!)
2. Get the latest stock ROM with update mentioned and flash my phone via ROM manager with that ROM (where can I get this ROM?)
3. Go ahead and try turning off the updates as mentioned in this thread to atleast get rid of the pesky update messages constantly popping up on my phone.
Any ideas?

My suggestion? Since you're comfortable flashing a ROM, just flash Virtuous 3.2 and be done with it. It's the stock ROM + everything good about being able to root, in one complete package. Flash a nice kernel (ziggy, lou, incredikernel) while you're at it and enjoy some comparatively awesome battery life!
Thanks for the suggestion, that definitely looks like option 2 which was my preferred option.

[Q] Newb Here, Have a Few Questions......

Hey, just bought my Atrix about 2 weeks ago. My first ever smartphone, and i just rooted using the gingerbreak app (lost all my photos) and got the phone setup to install non market apps.
Also, just did the mod to allow the webtop app to work on any hdmi device, thats awesome!!!
I do have a few questions.
Is there a way to get the phone back to stock, or a reason why i would need too?? I noticed that doing a hard reset still leaves the phone rooted.
Can the phone still get updates while rooted?
I just wanted to know incase i had to send it back for any reason.
Also, since i used gingerbreak and modded for the webtop, if att does send an update, say a newer version of Android or Build, will this remove all my mods and root?
Sorry, not very tech when it comes to this sort of stuff.

Don't worry too much. Stick around and when there are updates we'll find out what happens. Usually root access is removed but we always find a way to get it back.
As long as you do not remove or freeze any Moto apps you can still update. If you happen to freeze them, you can just thaw before updates. If you remove them, you will most likely have to flash to stock with either 4.1.26 or 4.1.57 sbf. Also I believe the webtop hack may stop updates.
Instructions are in the forums for flashing back to stock.
Guide here ------> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065108
If you had to return your phone, flashing back to 4.1.26 or 4.1.57 should suffice. It's very easy if you follow the instructions. I usually flash back to 4.1.26 when a new update comes out, then use over the air (OTA) updates to get my phone current anyway just to "clean the pipes" so to speak.
You will pretty much always lose root with an update, but as was said, our wonderful devs will get it back quickly.
I dont plan on removing any moto apps. The webtop hack, all i did was remove 3 files, and replace with the 3 new apk's. Before installing the OTA update, could i just add the 3 stock apks i removed and remove the hack apks?
It's possible it may work.
Also if you flash for example GingerBlur, etc., they will remove Moto apps (bloatware).
With the right apps backup is a snap so its nobig deal to flash a stock sbf for updating purposes.

[Q] OTA Gingerbread update

So I use an Samsung Epic, however my friend uses a Droid X with the OTA update on it. From what I've read it seems the only way to root is phone would be to flash his phone back to a earlier version that already has root then update via Boot strap. Is this the only method? Or is it possible to get Bootstrap to work on his OTAed phone and then flash the Update over top of it. Or even just to flash the .zip of the rooted version of the OTA through the stock recovery by renaming it Update.zip? I just would like to know. I wanted to give him root because he is currently having issues with his keyboard and phone slowing down due to the bloatware on it.

Yeah I believe he is going to sbf back to froyo then root then install the 2 part 596 GB rooted version (you can get it from multiple places -try Team Black Hat's app) then he should be good to go.
