Hi everyone!
I'm new to all this rooting - have a HTC Hero that is now my 'second' phone since I have recently upgraded to the Galaxy S. I would like to know what is the best guide out there to root my HTC Hero/G2 Touch to load a custom ROM - as i'd like to start using the latest 2.2 Froyo update.
P.S My firmware is currently 1.5 and I have build number 2.73.110.26 on T-Mobile (UK)
If anyone could put me in the right direction i'd be very appreciative - might be a good idea (if not already been done) to create a sticky guide for rooting the hero phone as it seems very common.
Thanks in advance!
p.s i'm not a noob to computers but rooting phones is a new thing to me - so forgive me if i ask a few questions

IMO the guide here is the best:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=645253
Mainly because it is written by me............
But other than that - its probably the most up to date and quickest method available at the moment. I hope it helps and i'm on hand if anything doesn't go to plan (rare).
I second that, that's definitely the best guide on here.

Cheers dude! Thanks i will give that a whirl soon
Hi,
I am a Hero user since day one. I rooted my phone back then with one of the early methods. I had to manually chmod stuff and copy over files or something like this, I don't remember exactly.
Now I haven't followed the root/mod/rom world anymore, but want to install a new rom now.
Do I have to re-root my phone with a new method? Should I reset anything?
I'm a little confused with all the roms - i just want to use a stable froyo 2.2 - which rom would you recommend I go for (I am using a UK T-Mobile phone)
Cheers

It is recommended to have the latest custom recovery installed before flashing a new ROM. So if you turn off your phone, then hold HOME + POWER to boot into the recovery, you should get some writing come up at the bottom. The latest Amon Ra is 1.7 I think.
But apart from that, you can just put the new ROM onto your SD, then flash through the recovery, easy.

FroydVillain 1.5? I haven't updated from 1.4.4 yet but will definitely be doing so this evening.
EDIT.... Also there is that Fusion ROM,... Give that one a try aswel, try to run them for 48hours to get a good feel for the two.
Right so as far as I am aware I have just r00ted my phone with unrevoked3.
I need help in installing the custom 2.2 Froyo ROM and also advice on how I'm able to check if the phone has been successfully r00ted? Apologies if similar threads have been started before but I couldn't find anything relating to this via the search tool. I have access to both Windows 7 and Mac so which ever OS is easier to use just let me know...
Thanks Peeps!
If you can see the superuser icon in your app drawer then its rooted
Thanks for your reply Michealtbh...
I noticed that SuperUser with a Ninja Icon, also I am able to do... su <enter> in a command terminal and the result I get is #
Hopefully everything is okay with r00t but how do I go about putting Froyo 2.2 on it? Do I need to flash it with a custom 2.2 ROM as I debranded my Wildfire a while ago as I got it from T-Mobile.
Any help with putting 2.2 on my Wildfire would be appreciated!
The reason for me upgrading to 2.2 Froyo is I had an over the air update which was pushed to my phone. After installing this firmware update my phone no longer works on WiFi and the only net connection I can get is through 3G/HSPDA. Prior to the update my WiFi worked fine, I do not have an option to enable my WiFi through the settings menu as it is not highlighted an will not allow me to select it as an option. I did a factory reset and this did not fix my problem with the WiFi and now T-Mobile are saying to send it off for repair/reflash.
I take it this over the air update needs a follow patch to fix the bugs but I might as well just r00t my phone an upgrade to 2.2 Froyo (if possible) instead for all the messing about its worth...
Yeah you'll need to flash a custom rom to get froyo. There are many guides on how to do that here in the forums. There are also quite a few different roms to choose from, have a look in the wildfire development section and see which one appeals to you

You'll need to get root, then you can use K`Tag's method from here to flash back a mostly stock 1.6 Fender ROM. The problem is that the original Fender ROM was never released, so a couple of guys got together and made one that is mostly like the original. So, we just need to get you rooted. Run SuperOneClick again, copy the log, dump it to pastebin, and drop the link here. I'll take a look at it and we'll go from there.
Title says it all...Finally thinking about rooting, but I dont know it its possible yet since I got the 2.3.4 update. Can someone point me in the right direction please? All the posts I found are kind of old.
Root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1206930 must have S-OFF before you update to 2.3.4 or you will have to downgrade to 2.2 turn S-OFF then patch again to 2.3.4 then root...
Damn, no other way huh? I don't feel like downgrading, guess I'll wait till there is another way...lol. Thanks for the response!

Desire Z 2.3.3 ROOT
Hi,
I am using EU version of G2 (desire Z) with htc official gingerbread 2.3.3 ROM. I am also new in this so downgrading to 2.2 isn't option for me. Does anybody knows if there will be some simplyfied way to root desire z 2.3.3 (one click root or something like that) somwhere in near future.
Thanks for reply!

Well considering that there isn't even a reliable one-click root for the 2.2 release (and even farther from one-click for the European version) I'd highly doubt that you're going to see a one-click for the 2.3 release any time soon, if at all.
Just because you're new doesn't mean that downgrading isn't an option for you! Just do your research and follow the detailed guides and you'll be fine. It may take some time for you to build up some confidence to do it, but when its done you'll be glad you took the time to learn a lot about the device as you learned to root it the hard way.

i'm afraid there's no other way for now, you have to downgrade to older version which had root method already.
Not a temproot? I think I have seen a topic for temproot of G2, but no responses from anybody who has tried, so I don't want to be first to try.
I wish only to remove annoying ADS, all the rest is fine with 2.3.4.
Because you said that I might have to wait a long time to get one click solution I have decided to give it a try and root my phone:
firstly I have downgraded my software with this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
and than root it with this:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Vision
and than install Virtuous 2.0 ROM with Rom Manager
I had no problems and everything works nice now.
But still I would like to change some things on my phone and I hope someone could give me some directions how to do it.
1) firstly I would like to delete/hide stock battery icon from notification bar becazse I use ZDBox to monitor battery. I have found this tread on this forum but I am not shure if this method works for Desire Z with this ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=740502
Does prhaps anyone knows how to do that with Virtuous 2.0 ROM on Desire Z
2)secondly I would like to ask you which ROM do you suggest to try out.
I really like how MIUI ROM looks like and how much free RAM you get with this rom but as I was reading comments about it it seem that there is no landscape orientation in this ROM. Does this issue apply only for launcher or are systam apps like sms app or email app also only in portrait mode.
thanks for answers and ideas

1) you can use the uot kitchen to create a theme with whatever battery icon you like.
2) i would suggest cm7, by far the best rom in my opinion, fast and stable and always have the theme chooser to change it up. if your looking for a sense rom though i would go with the synergy port.

as stated before you will need to downgrade it. its pretty easy to do as long as you follow the guide
Ok over the past 2 days I have searched over almost every single thread on the MY Touch 4g forums and can not seem to find a definite answer on this question:
Is there any way to take a rooted S-OFF, the Engineering HBoot & the ClockworkMod Recovery, 2.2.1 Stock build using the instructions on cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Glacier:_Full_Update_Guide and upgrade it back to the Stock t-mobile 2.3.4 build without unrooting etc?
I am not overly interested in installing cm7, although I did have a great experience with it on my t-mobile HD2 before the screen decided to stop working for the 2nd time. I actually did enjoy using the stock 2.3.4 build on the mt4g but would like to have more power over my phone (such as changing the hosts files to get rid of ads, remove bloatware apps I'm not interested in myself, etc).
All threads I have read more or less say once you downgrade, root and install clockwork recovery to install a rom of your choice, well I would like that rom to be the stock 2.3.4 build. Other threads state that in order to install the 2.3.4 build you need to install using the bootloader(which would unroot your phone) and not clockwork recovery.
If someone could please point me in the right direction to accomplish this goal you will seriously make my day/night/week/month.
If something is in the works that's great, I'm willing to wait it out. If this is a completely impossible goal so be it, I'll use CM7 mod.

Wow... Seriously... 2 days of looking and how the hell do I miss that.
Seriously thanks, but I blame the title of that thread "T-Mobile myTouch 4G GB Upgrade (Rooted & Unrooted)" Should be a Sticky and renamed to something like READ HERE TO UPGRADE TO 2.3.4 ROOT & UNROOTED
Sigh, but seriously thanks.
