It has not yet been leaked.
It looks awesome, I can't wait... and it has been leaked, it's been leaked for week or so.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567821
there's already a dump leaked from the motorola sholes phone that's running eclair (2.0) but it hasn't been ported. (or should I say hasn't been released because drizzy already ported it) Drizzy mentioned that it's just plain android 2.0 with no overlayer such as touchflo, or blur
dam u beat me 2 it lol
Yeah Maxisma did the dump of it on this thread. They're working on a port and development. I can't wait.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567821
i am pretty excited, 2.0 looks fly. really hope cyanogen gets on the case.
these screenshots are from the motorola droid, as u can see in the model info. Drizzy tweeted this last night sayin if someone can get him the dump that he'd port it. Now I see what he was talkin bout with droid... google's finally tagging along with motorola and htc with the social integration but of course it's NOTHING compared to blur or even hero. it looks real weak with only facebook?? wow. but it's a start. this looks somewhat plain but knowing this is from a moto phone that's probably not even the stock 2.0.
It's sorta weird having 1.6 released and then 2.0 pretty quickly afterwards. Maybe Google never plans on releasing an official 2.0 for the Dream/Sapphire and 1.6 was it's last update?

Most likely, cuz the g1 had issues about whether 1.6 would even be on it... so with this update they're making sure that people will be ready for buying more new phones I guess
Cooooooooooool! This is a huge step
I'm very impressed at how big a jump 1.6 and 2.0 is, do wants that maps and Car Home, heres hoping Sholes goes GSM with T-mobile 3g (one can dream)
Looks sweet!
if you all are impresssed with the screenshots check out the boot animation on this thing it pretty nice:
http://phandroid.com/2009/10/15/motorola-droid-boot-video/
Hope is that Cyanogen can move this one along. I for one really like the Facebook integration.
Also, randomly on my wish list is a Reply button always on the Gmail app, or chance to customize which 3 buttons are at the bottom of the Gmail app when viewing a message.
I'm hoping that Google streamlined the code from 1.6-2.0 so overall there won't be any major space/performance issues.

This explains the lack of updates form many devs in regards to 1.6, they all probably figured it a waste of time with 2.0 right around the bend.
Very excited to see what happens in the coming weeks.

Probably because, in reality, 1.6 is 1.5 with some minor bugfixes and universal search.

Google was saying themselves that they weren't sure at first whether they would release a 1.6 OTA update for the G1... but then their developers got it smaller to G1 size. not that it matters for us cuz we can get it whether they release it or not thanks to these awesome devs

Edit: could this be the "something big" that tmobile said was happening on the 19th?
I've heard somewhere that anything released 2009 and after will have a 2.2 update given to it.

... which would be enough since its a 32B and therefore compatible with DREAM. In fact, it would be BETTER than a tmobile OTA since it won't be polluted with the tmobile junk and will come with root.
Watch here for updates for this device: http://developer.htc.com/google-io-device.html
Great news that Android 2.2 will be added onto the MyTouch.
With that hopefully Cyanogen can get his hands on it as well and get it going for our G1s as well
He is already out with it. It is still under test and lot of things are broken in it, but if you wanna try Froyo just for the heck of it, you can on G1 and Mytouch

Actually, what this will mean is that we will be able to get a STABLE 2.2. The state of "cyanogen stable" is actually extremely unstable.
It would be nice to have an OEM 2.2 build just with a few extras... you know, the things that you actually use rather than just jamming in all the bling you can imagine.

You seem to be confused.
There are 2.2 "ports", based on the EMULATOR IMAGE that comes with the SDK. They don't work in even a marginally usable fashion though -- they're not even worth wasting 10 seconds on.
i downgraded from cyan 6 and unrooted ... asa root was undone i got the first half of 2 files for an OTA. Ditched the phone today in favor of a keyboard (seeing as their essentially the same) before i got the rest of it. It IS coming boys!!!

Absolutely agree. Thats precisely what i'm waiting on. It would be really nice to see other builds come out based on oem. We will see what happens soon. Enomther is waiting to start working on just that i believe. Cant wait to see what he come up with.
The Rom in my signature is based on the OTA for MyTouch/Sapphire and it is amazing.
Reminds me of my other daily driver Super D.... yes it is that good.

Enom is one of the first Roms I flashed, he is also up there for reliability.
Will see what he releases as well.
Hopefully he will have an apps2ext built into his Rom.
Honestly the black theme and the above mentioned is the only thing that is missing from the Official AOSP 2.2 OTA
There is a workaround using Titanium Backup however but would want a more streamlined approach to accomplish this.

It's all speculation. Google tends to stay pretty tight until they have a press conference or release party. Look at FroYo - it was a total surprise to wake up and find that they where dropping source into the tree.
The blog-o-sphere refers to Gingerbread as 3.0. I believe that Google has round-about-ly confirmed that the name is in fact "GingerBread", but we won't have a version number till they drop source in the tree again around November. Judging from the speculated improvements, it should be a major version number change.

My guess is 2.3 is correct, jumping a full revision number such as to 3.0 would generally indicate a partial or complete rewrite of the core code.

I actually kinda wish that Google would slow down a little. I'm scared to buy a new phone if it's going to be outdated in three months when Google puts out something new. I guess that's why we donate to our developers!

Google has said that they will be slowing down after GingerBread(regardless of the version number). My assumption is they did not expect such rapid growth of the platform and users need a fully functional OS to make it worth buying into - A phone any more is not a quick purchase, there is a lot of investment in hardware and software. Where as with feature phones they where cheap(in comparison) and easily replaceable.
From what I remember seeing, the next update is to have some big changes making it most likely 3.0. All speculation though.
Personally I'm happy android has been updating quick. Keeps the phones newer fresher feeling longer and fixes problems quicker. I came from winmo and never got fixes and the roms bored me. Plus I really hated 6.5.
I'm holding out until December to upgrade and debate on new phone or used evo. I've been out of contract for 9 months now.

Jk2 is a build number of the most recent (and most important since its specifically for vibrants) froyo. Before this all the froyo roms out has been built off of other variations on diff models/carrier.
The fact that jk2 was leaked means the official ota for all tmobile customers is real and immenent.

I doubt we'll ever see an official 2.3. Samsung will probably release 2.2 somewhere between 2-4 months behind the competition. That doesn't give me great hope that we'll ever seen 2.3. Figure that it took HTC/Motorola 2-3 months to turn 2.2 final into 2.2 custom versions to OTA, then we are looking at 4-7 months from now for 2.3 if all of the same timeframes hold. That's probably past the window that this phone will receive official updates.
well seems like the ported versions of the firmware updates have problems, like the headphone jack not working. or gps lagging ect. (not to say the developers didnt do a good job{ cuz they did an awesome job}) but i use that stuff lots. i agree with lex tho. i think that we will probly stop geting updates after awhile so that the newer more awesome phones can get bought up.

2.3 won't be that different
2.3 won't be that different It will change the resolution mainly to allow a bigger screen Right now 2.2 really can only function on a 7 inch screen without some mods so 2.3 will have that integrated. 3.0 will have real differences, but Vibrant has become the developers phone of choice so, you will see that on the phone as soon as it gets out.

I doubt it will take that long. Look, the Galaxy S took a while because these are the first phones using the Hummingbird CPU. People say HTC and Motorola are more on the ball, but they're using the same Snapdragon and OMAP cores since the beginning. Heck, Froyo was originally built for the Snapdragon--no wonder Froyo is easy to port to those phones.
Now they've got Froyo on the Hummingbird, I would think future releases will be easier to port based on the accumulated experience.

No. Froyo was pushed to the nexus one in late june.
HTC/Motorola pushed it 2-3 months after that and samsung will wind up another 2-4 months after that, depending on when they finally push it.
2.3 will be pushed any day now to the nexus one, so you can do the math from there if you assume the same timeline. My guess its that pushes 2.3 out of the window for the upgrade.
Guys.. Froyo should be out before Christmas. Team Whiskey and Eugene already got it. And tmobile is sending OTA to people with JI6 to downgrade back to JFD. They're preparing peoples phones.
Okay, we have froyo, now we are set... OH WAIT GINGERBREAD IS COMING OUT I AM NEVER HAPPY OTHER PHONES WILL HAVE IT BEFORE ME CRY CRY CRY CRY.
Seriously, I can assure you gingerbread is not going to come out this year.
And the N1 is the dev phone so of course it's going to be first to snatch up the latests firmware.
Heck, samsung or tmobile DIDNT PROMISE YOU ANY UPDATES. You bought the phone and that is it. They have your money, what are you going to do know? Didn't you check on the behold? I think they are stuck on 1.6 same as the Cliq. BE HPPY you got froyo.

Figured id start a thread about it and people can chime in on what they know and what they want to know. Id like for someone to provide a link to what the up coming features are going to be and when its going to be released. I heard that its going to come out on monday the 6th and some of the features might include some more lime green and a market with music that can be purchased and also some sort of supported video chat. Any truth to this would be cool but I can't confirm anything. I know verizon usually comes out with some kind of sheet to tell users what will be included and I haven't found it yet so if anyone has information that'd be nice to share with the people here on xda.

yeah plus MOTO will want to make some crappy build with "ninja blur" which will take forever since they only care about the droid x so we'll have to wait a while unless you're rooted. Ports of stock 2.3 should probably be out sometime in the few weeks after it is released for el nexus uno
Not sure about sources and such but:
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1930297/tablet-designer-claims-android-23-release
They announced its release this morning along with the Nexus S

So I'm going to make a guess that getting Gingerbread onto the Droid2 is going to require a new kernel? In and of itself, Gingerbread uses a newer kernel than Froyo, and it seems like there are some significant improvements under the hood that may require kernel support. I suppose this could be verified by comparing the source code between the two releases.
So, barring someone hacking eFuse, I would guess that we aren't going to see Froyo until Motorola decides to release it. Hopefully I'm wrong here...

3.0 is probably going to be the one that has more of a UI change, pretty sure it was at least semi-confirmed a while ago that 2.3 wouldn't be a drastic change.

Yeah I read somewhere about one of the tablet makers saying that they weren't gonna release their tablet till honeycomb comes out because 2.3 isn't much of an upgrade. I just was hoping.
Here's a video I made of the gingerbread sdk. Remember I was tired.

To be fair though, .1 updates are never huge upgrades, just have back-updates and various new features that generally aren't massive (1.5 > 1.6, 2.0 > 2.1, 2.1 > 2.2, etc etc). The tablet remark makes sense, because if what's been said on various tech sites in the past is true, 3.0 will be made with tablets in mind, as opposed to 2.2/.3, which are not really optimized for tablets at all. Personally, I'm a bit excited to see what happens with NFC, as I am sort of into the idea of never carrying a credit card again.
Does 2.3 have requirements? I heard that either 2.3 or 3.0 will but I think its gonna be 3.0 since its a .7 update instead of a .1 update.

This isn't always the case but in general naming practice the code base for a X.1, X.2, X.3, X.N, series of a program are the same and the revision steps are bug fixes and maybe small upgrades. When a name changes from 1.X to 2.X that usually indicates a major revision to the base code such as a rewrite.
Such as, 1.5 to 1.6, minor step, few new goodies mostly bug fixes, 1.6 to 2.1, major jump tons of changes and bug fixes, 2.1 to 2.2, mostly bug fixes but also included major Dalvek VM upgrade, the step from 2.2.1 to 2.3 is mostly bug fixes and a few updates. The next major revision should be 3.0 and from what I have read and heard it will have a major focus on larger format applications beyond cell phones such as Tablets and Media devises such as Tv's and Google Tv.
well the evo devs are already working on a rom for us. glad i bought an evo when i did. i don't think the hero can handle 2.3.

That would be odd.
My phone seems to handle each update better than the last.
