File Explorer Freezing in TD2 (Windows) - Touch Diamond2, Pure General

Hi guys
I've had my TD2 for about 6 months and all good so far - thank to this site
Recetly, I can't get in to File Explorer via the phone. When i click on the icon, I get the Windows logo (the horrid round pie-chart one!) and it just sticks for ever! I have to "X" out of it but then it locks up my RAM so i have to do a soft reset each time
I notice that when i click on File Explorer the directory it is trying to get in to is Windows - which i know from previous use is the slowest one to get in to out of all the directories (e.g. My Programs, Documents, etc). I wonder if this is a cause?
By the way, I can Sync all ok (via ActyiveSync on XP) and can get in to the different directories including Windows this way just not through the phone.
Please tell me i won't have to do a hard reset - I really don't want to do this! Tell me there's an xda-developers approved app out there somewhere!
Thanks for the help guys.
Mo

I had my phone set to the windows folder in File Explorer once but it did not lock my phone, sorry I cant help anymore.

I had my phone set to the windows folder in File Explorer once but it did not lock/crash my phone, sorry I cant help anymore.

I had this exact problem. There is a registry edit you can do (sorry I cant remember exactly what it is) so File Explorer stops trying to load the Windows folder when it starts.
The other solution is to use Total Commander, which I think is a much better file explorer.

Thanks for the response guys.
ozmbie - cheers for this, I'll have a look at Total Commander tonight. Pity you can't remember the reg edit.
Anyone out there know the edit??
Thanks again
Mo

You can use also Resco explorer.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\File Explorer\LocalPath
Change from "\windows" to just"\" (without the "" of course)

Pete_S - the reg edit worked a treat.
Cheers mate.

I've had File Explorer do this when it was set to look at Windows. As you know, there's a stupid amount of files in \Windows so that it takes File Explorer (or Explorer over ActiveSync), ages to read the folder and show the results. This problem is exacerbated massively if you put a sort on the folder other than by "Name". I've done that, and had it take 5 minutes or so before the list appears. So if you're in the same situation you probably don't need to edit the registry, you just need to leave it for long enough. Just go and make a cuppa!

Aah, funny you mention the "sort folder by", as mine was set to "type" (not sure how) so i guess that's what was making it hang for ages! Will bear it in mind next time.

Re associate files to a certain program

Anyone know how to associate .txt & .doc files with Word?? Or associate a file type to a certain program??
I dont know what happened, some how they got disassociated with Pocket Word. But than a strange thing happened, I connected my 8125 to my PC and synced with it. I transferred a couple of .doc files over to it and somehow they got associated with Word :-/. I tried to do the same with .txt files but no luck.
Does anyone have any insight on this?
This really chaps my nipples as well.
On Pocket PC X-2003 you could go into file explorer and change file associations right there. Apparently now they don't give people the option by default. What happens when some shmuck program hijacks a filetype? When I saw this functionality missing on my Cingular 2125 Smartphone I wasn't too dissapointed, but it's rediculous that they took this off the PPC platform also.
I think you can still do this with various tweaking programs. Just make sure that they support WM 5 before even thinking about it. Not sure if you can find this in freeware or commercial. If you spot anything good that's freeware, please let us know.
RESCO Explorer can do it
Cheers
hrb
or you can have a look at the reg fr word, i have found powerpoint and excel, not sure where word is!!
I think gsfinder can do it, for free.

I couldn't find an option with GsFinder to associate apps...but i did one one with Resco Explorer.
Is there anway to change the icon to Pword for a file?? Its still the same as before, but it's working nonetheless. Thanx

Is There Any Way To Hide Programs

I Want To Know IF There Is Any Way That I Can Hide Programs Or Mask Them SO That They Don't Show Up On The Programs List And Also Hide Any Files Associated With The Program
HELP
Any Help Please
It's difficult to answer without knowing what you are trying to accomplish. Why would you want to hide programs on your own phone?
Anyway, your best luck will be with small programs, the kind that run as a single executable, that you can put somewhere on the SD card.
Im Sure Im Not The Only One With These Issues
My Girlfriend Was Always Questioning Me About Why I Always Kept My Phone Locked And Would Not Answer It When I Was Around Her So I Put A Program Called Magicall On My Phone I Don't Know If Your Familiar With That But You Can Screen Certain Calls Well As She Always Does Whenever I Leave My Phone Unlocked She Went Thru It When I Was In The Shower She Saw The Program But Couldn't Get Into It Sp She Went On The Internet To Find Out What It Was And Then She Wanted To Know Why It Was On My Phone And We've Been Arguing Ever Since So Please Help Me Id You Can It Would Be Much Appreciated Thank You In Advance
I don't have a technical answer..sounds more like it's a trust issue. Besides locking the phone, only thing I can think of is install on sd...but then you have to remember to remove the sd card when you put the phone down.
If this was a pc, I'd say install the private stuff on an encrypted volume like TrueCrypt. Not sure if there's anything like that for ppc.
This would probably work...
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-freeotfe4pda-v3-00.html
But I'm telling you, it will be a real PITA to manage a setup like this. Methinks it would be easier to just get straight with the gf, but I know very little.
i tried to download the program but it said that it was not a valid ppc application any more suggestions

Here is a solution if you are not trying to be open with gf:
Have the program cab on sd card renamed to something that would never be used by gf, such as erasememory.cab. Use program when you need it. I don't think this will work if you are trying to use a program to keep her from finding out about other gf, you may want to use the thing from Men in Black that erases her memory.
The program from earlier, or some other virtual encryption device may work, but you may have issues due to the fact that you are running a program tied into so many others (phone, sms, etc). You may make your phone pretty unstable.
Why don't you tell her that you accidently replied to a text that sent you spam messages and you were trying some freeware program to block, or that you were getting a call from some random number that was harrassing you and you were trying this program to see if it would stop the calls. You gotta think on your feet if you are going to prevent the ***** session after she found out. Careful if she pulls the verizon/sprint bill and checks sms/calls.
if what im trying to do is not possible then is there anyway to change the icon or mask the program im up for any suggestions right now other than being honest cause I love my women
"i tried to download the program but it said that it was not a valid ppc application any more suggestions"
exe files in general are install ment to be run on the pc with the pda connected not directly on the pda!
about hiding programs then
\windows\start menu\programs and remove the shortcut goes along way
after I deleted the shortcut I tried going into my documents to open the program but it didn't open is there another way to open it also I tried changing the name of the program with this method and it worked but is there a way I can change the icon because that would be perfect thanks for your input it is much APPRECIATED and if there's anything I can help you with let me know

Here is how you mask the icon.
Use total commander and navigate to Windows/Start Menu/Programs and find that .lnk file: delete it.
Find another .lnk file and copy to pasteboard. Go to another folder and paste it there (just as long as the other folder doesn't have the same link). Go into properties of that copied link and click on shortcut tab at the top. In the target field, click on File and navigate to Program Files/(DIRECTORY OF YOUR PROGRAM)/(EXECUTABLE FILE THAT OPENS YOUR PROGRAM) and click OK. Click File/Rename and call it something benign or something she wont click (like Erase Phone Memory).
You will then cut to pasteboard and navigate back to Windows/Start Menu/Programs and paste that file. You will then use that file to start the program. You could also change the name of the directory folder in program files if she knows how to navigate around in total commander/ file explorer. It will still show up in task manager as what it is though, and same goes for x button/ pocket plus.

Windows Folder; Deleting .dll files ???

Hello!
I tried to open my "windows folder" in File Explorer, and it took forever. Problably due to the many, many files in there.
It seems that my Touch is collecting lots & lots of .dll files (looks like the windows logo on a white piece of paper).
My question is, can I delete these files without causing any problems to the device?
Thanks!
mmmm
Yes delete all of them !! including the ones that say VERY IMPORTANT DO NOT TOUCH ...

FORGET ABOUT IT! It will kill your Elf! DLLs are main system files, deleting them will damage Windows Mobile!
Why do you want \Windows to load faster? Maybe we can help?
The folder always took a minute to open. The last time I opened it, it took about 2 min. or more to open. I thought it was frozen, so I soft reset the phone; tried to open again, and it took over 2 min. I just noticed that the dll files were growing.
With constant use of the internet on my phone, I don't know how many of these files will end up in the windows folder.
Thanks for the second reply
For the first...
You can use some freeware like GSFinder
It opens \Windows folder much faster that Explorer
And yes ... I thought it was frozen, too
Hah; thanks a bunch. I think I can explore with my Memmaid.
Thanks for the replies.
the reason maybe the growing internet cache:
use this tool ClearTemp to clear it
or even better (but more advanced)
change the internet temp folders to the storage card move internet explorer cache to storage card

windows folder loading in file explorer very slow...

like in the title, why the windows folder loading in file explorer is very slow than in resco explorer is immediately? (windows folder of internal memory and not of storage card)
It just does...that's (one of the reasons) why many people use Resco in preference
Yep, the embeded file explorer tends to lag when it comes to large folders.
My Windows folder loads in 1 second.
May I ask how you convinced the Windows Explorer to do it that quickly?

Sweet talk...
No tweaks applied though.
Strange, my HD2 takes ages to open the Windows folder (almost one minute). As somebody already mentioned, Resco does it in a few seconds.
widows explorer takes only a second to load
Chaps,
The speed at which explorer loads the files depends on how many applications you have installed and how old your installation is. The older the installation the more dirty and polluted it is, slowing down explorer.
If you hard reset and then immediately load up explorer you will find that it will fly. Start loading up apps and using it on a daily basis and speed of access rapidly deteriorates.
Hope this helps.
WB
PS: Oh, and if the installation is dirty and you have stacks of apps open in memory when you open explorer then that just makes things a whole lot worse.....

i dare you to go to that same windows folder and select sort by size, see how long that takes you.

Try loading the files by type and tell me if you finish in less than 2 mins

That's something else
In short, don't sort. Set the sort key to its standard and loading goes faster.
To make the windows folder open in a second, just....
1) get the folder to open
2) then change the sort to "name"
Next time you go to the windows folder it will load in a second!

Trying to customize Start Menu

My Start Menu is really crowded. The Custom ROM I had on my TP2 had the icons sorted into folders -- which I really liked -- so I'm trying to do that on my HD2.
Doing that through File Explorer seems tedious, however, whenever I navigate to the Start Menu folder on my PC with the phone hooked up via USB, I can't move icons into folders, I'm told I don't have the permissions.
Any fix?
Also, is there any way to get the Start Menu (and it's folders) to sort themselves like Windows Explorer typically sorts files -- folders first, files second, and after that alphabetically?
I'm using Windows Mobile 6.5.5 if it makes any difference.
Would appreciate help.
I'm not aware of any editor for the start menu I'm afraid, but I'm happy to be proven wrong.
I've tidied mine before now, but just using the method you suggested and using totaly commander. At least I could multi-select links, rather than move them 1-by-1.
Sorry mate.
Maybe i'm missing something, but I can't replicate the problem? I have just tested this, and I can quite happily browse to the windows/start menu/programs folder of my mobile from my pc, (it takes quite a while to open the windows folder, maybe 2 minutes) , then create folders and move links around without a problem. Is that what you are trying to do?
<Edit>Using windows 7 ultra, and i have the allow all programs tweak from bsb tweaks, doesn't that set the permissions in teh registry to something less controlling?
I´m looking for a tool that not only sorts the icons but also changes the registry settings for the links. That means that if you uninstall the program the start menu icon is also removed and so on...
