Re associate files to a certain program - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Anyone know how to associate .txt & .doc files with Word?? Or associate a file type to a certain program??
I dont know what happened, some how they got disassociated with Pocket Word. But than a strange thing happened, I connected my 8125 to my PC and synced with it. I transferred a couple of .doc files over to it and somehow they got associated with Word :-/. I tried to do the same with .txt files but no luck.

Does anyone have any insight on this?

This really chaps my nipples as well.
On Pocket PC X-2003 you could go into file explorer and change file associations right there. Apparently now they don't give people the option by default. What happens when some shmuck program hijacks a filetype? When I saw this functionality missing on my Cingular 2125 Smartphone I wasn't too dissapointed, but it's rediculous that they took this off the PPC platform also.
I think you can still do this with various tweaking programs. Just make sure that they support WM 5 before even thinking about it. Not sure if you can find this in freeware or commercial. If you spot anything good that's freeware, please let us know.

RESCO Explorer can do it
Cheers
hrb

or you can have a look at the reg fr word, i have found powerpoint and excel, not sure where word is!!

I think gsfinder can do it, for free.
V

I couldn't find an option with GsFinder to associate apps...but i did one one with Resco Explorer.
Is there anway to change the icon to Pword for a file?? Its still the same as before, but it's working nonetheless. Thanx

Pocket ie try to save jpg instead of displaying them

Hi,
I'm sure there is somebody here that can help me. I've set up my SPV M5000 with some old programs, and they certainly messed up with the registry about file associations.
I can display jpg normaly, but if I try to see a jpg file (ie not embeded into a web page), I get the file save dialog. At first, it was registered to pimg.exe, and I tryed associating to to pocket painter for example, with no luck.
Anybody know the key to place to go back to a normal jpg displaying state for pocket ie?
TIA
I've the same problem.
Mine is the same but I've installed nothing that would affect the file associations...
I think perhaps it's just another of the joyful 'features' of Microsoft's wonderful Pocket Internet Explorer
Does it do the same with a gif or bmp?
V
That's exactly what I had on mine. I didn't get to the bottom of it, but instead did what vijay suggested and created a local html file with the jpg embedded. All I needed was to view a single jpg within PIE (from my webcam). This works fine, but is a workaround only for 1 jpg. I wouldn't want to do this for everything!
Surely one of the File Explorer tools can change the file associations?
I think the problem lies within PIE, when you click a pic it assumes its an attachment and so will save it,
I cant try atm but its worth trying to goto a pic directly ie,
http://www.website.com/picture.jpg
it may well display the image then, not sure, cant test atm. and its not going to be very useful when doing some normal browsing.
Same with Gif. I've teste on a K-Jam, and it display the picture properly in ie. I'm sure there is something messed up in registry
Found the solution
There is a CLSID value missing in HKCR/MIME/Database/Content Type/image/jpg and other gif and jpeg
Add a string value CLSID
{698E3FCA-70C3-11D0-81E8-00A0C90AD21A} and you are set.
@thaihugo
Won't work for me.
I've tried with PHM RegEdit but same behaviour as before.
Can you give us a screen shot of the correct registry key, please?
BTW:
There is another string "Image Filter CLSID" and
there is a "Bits"-key in /gif and /bmp and /jpeg but not in /jpg.
Are these needed too?
OK now it works.
What i've done is:
Created and copied the CLSID mentioned above into
image/bmp
image/gif
image/jpeg
image/jpg
image/pjeg
Copy the "Bits" from /jpeg to /jpg
Created a "Image Filter CLSID" in /jpg with the same content as found in /jpeg
Save, wait and Softreset. -> Works as intended!
I donĀ“t know if i've done to much, but everything works now.
I'm happy. Thank you!
I though it was my programs that would delete this keys, but it seems you need to insert them also. Maybe it is a full system bug? A registry export might be of some help if some other report the same problem.
This still isn't quite working for me...
Can someone explain again EXACTLY what I have to do?
Hmm - interesting stuff - will have to try this.
I assume this isn't going to affect other JPG viewers, eg Opera???
I have the same problem on both Hima and Universal WM2006
Himalaya > TOFCLOCK HIMA WM6 AKU.0.7.0
Universal > Jwrightmcps 9000_WWE_21200_21207_11500
The registry solution proposed doesn't work for me, probably due a different CSLID. Any suggestion?
THX
Many thanks to CouchPotato
@CouchPotato
Thank youuuu, your step by step solution worked fine for me on BA (WM6)

uninstall clearvue and/or associate pdf to adobe

Clearvue was preinstalled on my t-mob mda vario wm5. But since clearvue does not view all pdf well, installed adobe acrobat reader 2. But default is still clearvue and cant find how to uninstall preinstalled software or how to change default association.
Any help would be appreciated.
If you're not too scared of the registry...
You'll find in...
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf\Default = pdffile
So looking at...
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\pdffile\shell\
You'll find two sections...
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\pdffile\shell\open\command\Default = WTCVPDFV.exe "%1"
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\pdffile\shell\opendoc\command\Default = WTCVPDFV.exe "%1"
Change both to point to the adobe reader .exe location. If you don't know its location, find out through explorer/total commander/whathaveyou.
I don't know if a soft reset afterwards is required - if it is, just shut your Wizard down entirely (hold the on/off button for a couple of seconds), then start it back up.
If you double-click a PDF now, it should open with the adobe reader.
by the way.. have you explored all of the adobe reader's options / checked while installing? Usually these types of applications will give you the option to associate them with PDF either on install or through an option.
Thanks so far...
Registries does not scare me (yet) 8)
How can I edit the registry on wm5? Just have the mda for 3 weeks now and want several things altered (such as showing fileextensions), but having troubles finding answers. T-mob's helpdesk is no good for this
Adobe did not present an option during install to be default.
Also any help on uninstalling clearvue to clear up space?

PHM Regedit - http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/phmregistryeditor.shtml
Tascal Registry Editor - http://www2r.biglobe.ne.jp/~tascal/download/pocketpc/index_e.htm
Total Commander - http://www.ghisler.com/ce.htm
I'm using PHM Regedit myself. Total Commander is very fast at finding registry entries (and putting them together in a list), but not much good for editing. TRE is nice as well, but I couldn't get used to it

Silly Adobe... would've expected better from them. Actually, I would have expected they'd just associated PDFs with their app and not even ask!

'fraid not - it's in your ROM. Technically you could remove it from your ROM, but you're not going to gain any storage space by doing so. So just leave it and ignore it
You can also use attached app to set extensions (such as .pdf) to be opened with a specific program ( in your case Adobe). Use it if you do not want to touch your registry.
Thanks for the info. Just got back, havent tried it yet, but surely will.

That's better than the 'Real' way. Those guys ask if you want to associate your files with their program. If you say no, they do it anyway and when you try to alter it they redo it again. At least thats how they did it with Realplayer few years back. A real pain in the ....!
Its interesting,
I checked from registry and ...\open\command\Default = "\Storage Card\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 2.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" "%1"
Still when I open the .pdf document it uses ClearVUE...
found the solution.
you should change it in ...\opendoc\command\...
Checked, now it works.

Run it on your pc first then next time you sync - it will automatically be placed on your ppc. I recieved the same error.
I still don't know how to use the damn program and had to go to the website to ask them. Once I get the info on how to make a file (pdf) work with a program (pdf reader) I'll pass it on.
What about uninstalling Clearvue?
Clearvue would just hang when I tried opening PDFs with it, so I also installed Adobe Reader, which seems much better.
Is there any way to uninstall Clearvue PDF from my T-Mobile MDA? It doesn't appear in add/remove programs.
Thanks.

Folder structures - can't see files from word or excel

Does anyone have a hack that would allow me to view and save data files at a lower folder than the first level?
I.e. my folder structure is \Personal\Financial\ but excel and word can only see files stored under \Personal\ and not the next folder down. I need to be able to access this second level from within the application.
Would be a great help to me.
If you haven't installed Mad Programmer's dialog changer, you're not using your pda properly.
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=17133

Thanks vijay555 but this is not in relation to installing apps.
There is a particular problem in WM2003 whereby if I store for example my pocket excel files in the folder:
\Financial\Spreadsheets\
I cannot access this folder from Pocket Excel but only from File Explorer. Pocket excel will only show the files existing in the folder "Financial" here. It means that when I create a new excel (or any other document) from within the application, I have to save it to the "financial" directory first, then manually move it to the next folder down.
Same applies to Pocket Word, Listpro etc files (any files in fact).
Paul
pauldcullen: although the link I gave is talking about installing cabs and stuff, Mad Programmer's dialog changer hooks into the OS and changes all of the rubbish OS dialogs (that only allow you to see My documents etc) and replaces them with the more advanced kind that let you navigate anywhere.
The link I gave is a useful one on installing the app itself, because Mad Programmer's website is generally Japanese. But hopefully, try installing the app and you should be able to navigate anywhere for saving files.

Ensure you use the right version for your OS.
V
thanks a lot I'll give it a shot - any stability problems with it?
I've never had any and used it for > 1year on both Wm2003 and Wm5.
V
vijay I've installed it and it seems to work for SAVING new files into a sub-directory which in itself is great!
However, as soon as I OPEN pocket excel etc, I cannot see these files in the subfolders, only those in the parent folder - any ideas?
Thanks for your help!
Paul
Hmm, I just noticed that...
It seens mad programmer only hooked the saving, not opening dialogs.
Not the best option I know, but I never open files using word, I use gsfinder to locate them and open directly by double clicking.
Other then that, I don't think Word was "designed" to show the subfolders as you've got them configured. PITA I know.

what are some good free registry programs?

what are good programs that i can put on my MDA
someone showed me resco explorer but that cost money and someone showed me Wizard_registry_tweaks. from this site.
but when i install it, it doesnt show up under start/programs.
can someone help me with that, or just show me an alterenative registry program?
Check out this link
http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/utilities_registry.shtml
It is a link to Freewareppc.com's registry utilities page. I like resco exlorer myself but a good second choice is the PHM registry editor (4th link on page)
TotalCommander CE is great, and its FREE! Just google "total commander"
File explorer, Registry, etc
I use regedit_820.exe

The Wizard_registry_tweaks is not an application. When you run the .cab file, it puts the registry entries contained inside the cab into your registry. After a soft reset, the changes should be good to go.

File Explorer Freezing in TD2 (Windows)

Hi guys
I've had my TD2 for about 6 months and all good so far - thank to this site
Recetly, I can't get in to File Explorer via the phone. When i click on the icon, I get the Windows logo (the horrid round pie-chart one!) and it just sticks for ever! I have to "X" out of it but then it locks up my RAM so i have to do a soft reset each time
I notice that when i click on File Explorer the directory it is trying to get in to is Windows - which i know from previous use is the slowest one to get in to out of all the directories (e.g. My Programs, Documents, etc). I wonder if this is a cause?
By the way, I can Sync all ok (via ActyiveSync on XP) and can get in to the different directories including Windows this way just not through the phone.
Please tell me i won't have to do a hard reset - I really don't want to do this! Tell me there's an xda-developers approved app out there somewhere!
Thanks for the help guys.
Mo
I had my phone set to the windows folder in File Explorer once but it did not lock my phone, sorry I cant help anymore.
I had my phone set to the windows folder in File Explorer once but it did not lock/crash my phone, sorry I cant help anymore.
I had this exact problem. There is a registry edit you can do (sorry I cant remember exactly what it is) so File Explorer stops trying to load the Windows folder when it starts.
The other solution is to use Total Commander, which I think is a much better file explorer.
Thanks for the response guys.
ozmbie - cheers for this, I'll have a look at Total Commander tonight. Pity you can't remember the reg edit.
Anyone out there know the edit??
Thanks again
Mo
You can use also Resco explorer.
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\File Explorer\LocalPath
Change from "\windows" to just"\" (without the "" of course)
Pete_S - the reg edit worked a treat.
Cheers mate.

I've had File Explorer do this when it was set to look at Windows. As you know, there's a stupid amount of files in \Windows so that it takes File Explorer (or Explorer over ActiveSync), ages to read the folder and show the results. This problem is exacerbated massively if you put a sort on the folder other than by "Name". I've done that, and had it take 5 minutes or so before the list appears. So if you're in the same situation you probably don't need to edit the registry, you just need to leave it for long enough. Just go and make a cuppa!

Aah, funny you mention the "sort folder by", as mine was set to "type" (not sure how) so i guess that's what was making it hang for ages! Will bear it in mind next time.
