I recently had to replace my notebook, new one came with Vista, also coincided with purchase of Touch Pro 2.
my current kaiser (WM 6.0) works fine, connect usb, vista fires up mobile device center.
connect pro 2 (WM6.1) via usb , nothing, device center does not start up.
run active sync on the pro 2, Sync button is grayed out. I have set 'sync all pc's....' to usb in the connections screen.
have checked other threads but so far come up blank.
can anyone point me in the right direction to possible fixing this, I need to reload some software not to mention I would like to and would like to check out some of the roms on this sight.

Have you tried starting mobile device center manually? Also had some troubles now and then, reboot of my pc and softreset of my phone usually fixed my problems. Else most responses will probably include the usual: remove all partnerships and/or reinstall mobile device center.
Btw, does your device show up in your hardware list or under my computer when connect it to your USB port?
mobile devioce center (Vista) and htc pro 2
have tried pc reboots and htc reset, no go.
If i connect my kaiser it appears as a device under my computer and device center picks it up.
connect the pro 2, does not appear as a device under my computer and if device center running does not attempt a connect, if device center not running vista does not start it
also no partnerships currently set up.
did have a kaiser one , deleted this when the pro 2 did not connect

Well as far as I know Windows should at least show your device under My Computer, even without a partnership or without even having Mobile Device Center installed.
So my best guess is there is some conflict which prevents your TP2 from even connecting to your notebook. Have you tried connecting it to a desktop PC? Or are you trying to connect it through an USB hub or something? If so it is possible the hub isnt delivering enough power.
I had the same issue and ending up hard resetting my phone before I figure what I did wrong. Go to settings on TF3D then all settings. Go to connections, and under usb to pc, select active sync. If it says disk drive it will not work in active sync. Also if the enable faster data sync is checked...uncheck it. Sometimes this causes an issue.
Go to settings and choose USB->PC Settings. Here you can disable "fast synch". Now it should work, if not, activate "fast synch" ^^
YOu might want to re-instal active sync ( device center ), I had a simulair problem, and it was solved
gz reb3lzrr
rodium and vista sync
firstly thanks for the many replies.
still no go
reinstall device center
rebooted pc, reset phone.
tried with a xp laptop with active sync, still no go.
neither pc recognises the rodium phone.
when I attach my kaiser each pc 'chimes' , ie recognises the attachment and activesync or device center start up and connect
rodium nothing.
tried each of the usb ports and couple of cables, all work for kaiser non work for rodium.
Hi. I have had the same problems. Disable fast sync like my man neonoxDE said. That will help you. Altough it helped me. With Win7 you can sync with that option enabled.
(QUOTE: Go to settings and choose USB->PC Settings. Here you can disable "fast synch". Now it should work, if not, activate "fast synch" ^^)
thanks tried that as well, still no joy.
Its has if the phone is not telling the op system that its there. Ie the interupt to the op system that happens when a usb device is attached is not happening, or being ignored.
i had the same problem. i had to uncheck the box advanced network funtions. that wen you go in to settings and usb to phone.
that was the problem with my phone sync.
sorry for bad english.
Ugh
Just went through this all tonight. Also coming from a Kaiser (AT&T Tilt).
To get it functional, I had to:
1.) Add Remove Programs
2.) Remove Windows Mobile Device Center
3.) Remove Windows Mobile Device Center Driver Update (if you installed it).
4.) Disconnect USB from phone.
5.) Reboot
6.) Reinstall Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 from CD (Sprint here).
7.) Install Windows Mobile Device Center Drvupdate. (WMDC dir on Sprint CD, called drvsomething or other, depending on if you're 64 bit or x86 on your PC).
8.) Then had to "Clear Storage" on the phone and let it clear itself (a simple reset did not let this work)
9.) Once soft reset was completed, I could connect the phone, it then found it, and worked correctly.
Yeesh.
Unchecking the box everyone is saying didn't have an effect for me, though I tried it many times before going all nuclear.
Thanks for this.
Tried this on my vista laptop still no go.
If I connect my kaiser 'installs device driver software' pop up displays and when this is finished windows mobile device center starts up.
Initial connection of pro2, nothing
After having the pro 2 connected for at least 45 mins I did get an an install device driver message, the device was unknown and device center did not start up.
so it appears that the pro2 was recognised has an unkown device
additional info
loaded down a usb moniter onto my laptop.
When I plug in the Kaiser usb monitor shows connection of the device on the specific port.
Unplug this and plug in the PRO2 onto the same port nothing shows as being connected.
rapidlycomming to the conclusion problem with the data pin outs on the USB, does anyone know of a diag program that could test this out or an easy way to check this.
save me the initial cost of checking by a repairer (which in the UK can be steep)
Although my TP2 will sync with USB, most of the time I sync via a bluetooth connection.
Have you tried doing it that way?
Maybe this will work.
One unconventional way to fix this, is to go to your phones activesync. select menu, then change it to bluetooth sync. After that, soft reset phone and connect via usb.
Windows Update
Try conducting a Windows update manually when your phone is connected via USB cable.

Dear All,
Please help, my new O2 EXEC is sitting here almost totally useless without ActiveSync.
I did a very stupid thing:
I plugged in the Exec via the USB cable before installing ActiveSync 4.0.
What used to happen (back inthe day 2001 etc) would be that windows would install its own driver for the portable device and then when you subsequently installed ActiveSync its drivers would not go in and hence ActiveSync would not recognise your device.
What is happening now seems like the same sort of issue in that now having installed ActveSync it is just sitting there saying no connection.
For ActiveSync 3.6 and below this is a documented problem and here is the fix
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/264693/en-us
BUT for me this does not work (well because there is no yellow unknown device in Device managers other devices).
In AUDIBLE terms
a) I get a du-duh sound when I plug in EXEC (like if you plugged in a USB key for example)
b) It shows up in the Device Manager-> Network Adapters as "Windows Mobile-based Device"
c) ActiveSync 4.0 or 4.1 does NOT give me the dulde-de-dah sound
d) ActiveSync shows no connections
Anybody any bright ideas? Surely I am not the only twonk to have inadvertently plugged in the EXEC first
Answers greatly appreciated.
BASICALLY HELP
PS: Have also looked at ActiveSync trouble shooter 2001, the ActiveSync 4.0 troubleshooting article from Msoft, tried switching off firewall, no result. Have tried deleting the Mobile-based Device, uninstalling AS 4.0, rebooting, reinstalling AS 4.0 or 4.1 then plugging EXEC,no good.
PPS: I convinced a friend to let me install AS 4.1 on his computer and then plugged in the EXEC and all was fine, so the EXEC itself is sound.
Maybe this will help:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/help/activesync/default.mspx
Sorry, didn't read your message good.
Just see now you already did looked at the link....
But another idea: if your device works on your friend PC, then why not
do a clean install for the OS on your own PC?
Maybe this will solve your problem.
Dodger,
Thanks for the thoughts. Well actually thinking about a reinstall of my computer due a moments lapse of concentration is a difficult undertaking. With the backup of the on computer databases as well as over 100 applications installed, I think this would take me several person days.
Currently my thoughts are to clone the partition and then do a windows "over install" onthe clone, but logically that will not work because <of course> the whole point of an over install is that the registry and all applications are preserved.
I spent over 3 solid hours of googling, installing, uninstalling drivers yesterday trying to fix and can't believe I am the only one who has had this problem!
Perhaps somebody with a working ActiveSync can elaborate how does the EXEC show up in device manager (when its plugged in and synced), and also what device driver XP and /or Windows 2003 server would be using.
Thanks mb.
I was facing similar issue. Solution? Yes, uninstall my firewall, connect and sync with my JasjAr and then install the Firewall with Jasjar already connected !
This may help:
Open network connections on ur PC so u can see all connections.
Make sure AS (PC side) is enabled for USB
turn off JJ and plug it in to USB
Turn on JJ whilst watching the window of netwrok connections on ur PC
A new connection icon should pop up, then MAYBE dissapear again
Right click this icon, before it dissapears, and check it's enabled, then select properties
Now check the following items:
- does top box say "windows mobile based device"
- click "configure"
- under configure, is there a button somewhere (mine's working so I can't recall exactly where) that says something like "enable mobile device". If so, then you need to click this.
If this all fails, then repeat but with another USB port. The reason for this seeming waste of time is that you will get a DIFFERENT "Local area connection nn" icon, which may work for you.
I cant believe there hasnt been one mention of rebooting your PC - Which I can assume you already have done?
What OS are you running on your PC?
I have only just got my MDA PRO but this may help! as I did the same thing and for a while XP Pro wouldnt recognise the device.
Uninstall ActiveSync
Reboot PC
Install Activesync V4.0
Plug in USB Device
If there is still a problem connecting you shoudl see a USB device not recognised in your deviuce manager.
It almost seems like there is a time you have to wait before XP will respond normally to you unplugging and replugging in the USB.
Failing this you may have to uninstall Activesync and tehn remove all activesync registry keys it may have left behind! Then reboot and start again!
Just having tisproblem now, this is pïss poor of MS to still be foisting off onto us this Activesync package in such a terible state.
I've just had activesync stop working on me. It would connect but then refuse to sync anything even though it previously worked fine. I think it got upset after I booted up the PC with the Exec connected.
Anyway an uninstall and reinstall of Activesync on the PC cured the problem. Not the most robust software though.

What works for me is to turn off the handheld, and connect the cable after that. Then turn on the device if needed. Works mot of the time then.... no excuse for MS though....
I want to re-install the original bootloader (SPL) because I may have to return my TC for repairs. I have read the (beginner's) guide on how to install the original SPL but that method requires ActiveSync.
For some reason Activesync (on my 2 winxp pc's) doesn't recognize my TC anymore since about 2 weeks (Unknown Device) so that's a no go.
Can anyone recommend another way to restore the original SPL? I hoped that it could be done using the MicroSD method but elsewhere I've read that this doesn't work for the SPL part.
Try another USB cable (any MiniUSB, from your digi cam, mp3 player, ...) since yours might be invisibly broken inside. If it still doesnt work, in Settings > Connections disable Advanced network functionality to be found behind the USB to PC icon and try connecting your device again.

Hi Schaggo, thanks for replying. I have tried 3 or 4 different cables, some of which I'm sure worked fine before. On all cables, I can see that my TC does charge, but for some reason there is no usb-data connection at all. I've also tried disabling Advanced network functionality on my TC, re-installing Activesync on my laptop and doing a win-xp system restore to a time where all worked fine. Short of completely re-installing Windows XP, I think I've tried all there is to try.
I am getting very suspicious of the hardware connection inside my TC. Could it be partly broken so that it charges only? The main reason I'm considering turning my TC in for repair, is that on soft resets, I regularly get the warning 'Main battery is very low' after which my TC shuts down. Even though my battery is charged for >90%. Maybe this relates to my Activesync problems.
Interesting... hmm... to check the hardware you could try to connect your TC to a different computer (AS doesnt have to be installed) and if it never was connected before, Windows should bring up a "Search for drivers" dialogue which shouldnt happen if the hardware is broken.
Alternatively you could remove the TC of your device manager (it still is there, just hidden):
Unplug your Touch Cruise
Open command shell (start - run - "cmd")
Type set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 and hit enter
Go to your device manager (right click computer - manage - device manager)
In device manager in the View menu select Show hidden devices
Delete everything grayed out which has to do with either ActiveSync or the Touch Cruise or Polaris, most likely to be found under USB stuff and/or portable devices. I'm not on XP, I'm on Vista...
Having that done might help your case. Reboot the system and reconnect the TC. A general hint: System recovery doesnt work on XP and it partially works on Vista. I explicitely do not recommend to use it, it usually does more damage in the background than it helps in the foreground.
Hi, I tried all your hints but still no luck. In Device Manager I can't find anything that's related to HTC/Polaris/Activesync. Only 'USB Root Hub', 'Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller' and 'Unknown Device' (which pops up after attaching my TC). I tried deleting all of those but my TC is always (not) recognized as Unknown Device.
Installing WinXP SP3 did not help, nor did running a clean WinXP Image in VMware.
could be your computers USB port as well. So the VM doesnt do anything if the host which it runs on is broken
But could be a seriously defective unit. I heard of reports where people got their devices replaced without even bothering putting anything original back onto the device. They sent in some HardSPLed and custom ROMed devices and everything went fine for them. Maybe you'll be lucky. I guess just try...
Thanks for your continued support on this
I gave it one more shot by re-installing the original WWE rom from the MicroSD card twice in a row with a hard reset in between. Also deleted all usb stuff again from winxp Device Manager and uninstalled my firewall (Comodo).
After a reboot of my PC and connecting my TC to the USB cable, I at least got the 'Found New Hardware Wizard' to tell me that a 'USB Device' (meaning my TC) was found and how I would like to install the software. I tried automatically and manually but it/I could not find suitable drivers on my PC. I think that the fact that my TC was found as a 'USB Device' and not something like 'HTC P3650' is a clue that something's wrong.
I don't think my PC/laptop is to blame. I'll probably either throw my TC out of a window or hand it in for repairs. Fingers crossed.
The drivers come with ActiveSync, if you uninstalled AS it wont find the drivers. Most likely... If you uninstalled it, reinstall and try again.
Secondly, if you turned advanced network functionality off, the device doesnt get recognized by its name but as USB Device or so. Dont remember, tested it once... But its not Polaris or HTC or anything like that, it's a general descriptor. I hope you can get it to work, eventually...!
Hi, just to let you know: I turned my TC in for repairs because of the soft reset problem and when I got it back (supposedly with a new mainboard) ActiveSync worked like a charm again on the first try. So there must have been something wrong with the hardware inside my TC.
Unfortunately my repaired device was returned to me with a new hardware issue so it's on its way back to the repairboys in Belgium again. Boohooo.
Hi - ever since I used Internet Sharing the other day every time i plug my HD into my computer Active Sync (AS) doesn't recognize it.
When i plug in the phone in I get the touch flo menu and it asks if i want to use AS but nothing happens when i choose this - I've even reinstalled AS and XP has recognised the phone but not AS- anyone else had this problem?
Had this a few times with my other PDAs. In most cases it couldn't get a DHCP address from activesync.
Try this: while its connected, locate your device in Windows device manager (should be "Windows Mobile-base Device ...") and delete it. This does not affect partnerships. Disconnect and reconnect it, and Windows should recognize a new device with proper connection.

Thanks for the advice however I can't find a Windows device in the Device Manager - i think you are on the right lines though - Windows is simply not recognising the device...
Would it perhaps be USB Mass Storage device?
Windows should recognize your phone, this is independent of activesync. If this does not work, activesync has no chance to connect to, and the reason must be somewhere else.
Check your USB ports. BTW you're not using a hub are you? If yes you should connect it directly to the PC. Check cables, and/or try another USB-device if you have one.
When you connect, you should be asked how the phone should represent to the pc, with options as activesync, harddisk, modem. Select activesync here. If you're not asked, check device settings in Start-settings-connections-usb2pc.
Have you tried blanking out the "enable advance network funcitonality" in USB to PC setting?
And - you are using the HTC supplied USB lead?
bog standard mini-USB cables don't cut it
I have the following problem with my HTC Touch HD. Since yesterday after i transfered 2 video files and a few pictures, when i connect it through USB, the computer doesn''t detect HTC anymore (nor syncing nor file transfer). Even the Bluetooth syncing does not work. I performed several soft and hard resets, and it seems it;s getting worse after every reset.
I bought the phone 2 weeks ago, after i sold my Apple iPhone 3G 8GB. As we speak, i kind of regret i did that...any advise for me ?
I forgot to mention: when i plug the uSB cable, the device goes recharging.
Have you tried booting your pc ?
Also try unchecking Settings/connections/Usb to Pc/ "enable faster data synchronization"
r
Andrew
What cable do you use? I had similar problems with non original (asus) usb cable.
greetings everybody..
1) i tried what you said several times, no result.
2) i get same results with the original and the other cables..
3) i noticed one thing . . . if i connect the device to a computer that i never conected before the device, it launches active sync....and Active Sync just wont interact with my device.
Did you try reinstalling ActiveSync on your PC?
yes i tried....same result. Do you think a change of ROM would solve that ?
Now, even a syncronisation using bluetooth is almost impossible, since i cant pair the computer and the device. Damn, it's like a virus or something.

Impossible since i cannot connect using USB. Sorry !
I too had problems with my PC not recognizing the HD. Found out that it was a problem with my firewall and anti-virus. I adjusted anti-virus settings to allow active sync to pass through and have had no problems after that.
HTC also recommends going to Start --> Settings --> Connection tab --> USB to PC and deselect the checkbox for "Enable faster data sync"
For device recharging when plugged in to USB : go to Start --> Settings --> System tab --> Power. here below the battery charge indicator, there is a checkbox. Read the message and check/uncheck as desired.
Hope this helps !!
i thought one potential source for my problem would be the antivirus, but i disabled firewall (eset at work and symantec end point protection at home) and no result what so ever.
I cand figure a way to sync the device even with the bluetooth since i cannot pair the device and the computer.
I am starting to regret i bought HTC...
Try click the Activesync icon on HD Program, there is a "Option" on the menu, click and see if you could delete all the old connect. If yes, re-establish the connection again to see.....good luck
Option menu item is disabled (i performed several hard resets)...(
Another thing i noticed. I unchecked the box (when connected to USB charge), so now when i plug the usb cable, it wont charge. But, if the device is in stand by (black screen), and i plug the usb cable, it wakes the device up. So, in my mind, i think it is something wrong with the OS, it still "feels" the USB cable, but cannot (for an unknown reason) take the necesary action.
For 4 hrs i try to sync the device with the computer using bluetooth, and i cannot manage to do so.
Is there any way to reinstall ActiveSync on my HTC device ?

Tonight i will try to install at home Windows VIsta (at work and at home right now i have XP). I cannot use my phone - no phone number in agenda and it's driving me mad. The phone rings and there are quite a few persons i dont want to talk with.. HEEEEEELP
nobody there to help me ?
If you did a hard reset, and you can connect in drive mode, but can not sync, then I am 99.9% sure that there is nothing wrong with your phone, but that your computer is messed up.
Uninstall all your antiviruses, firewalls, and other bloatware, and see if it works then.
Just a possible solution, but did you try plugging in your phone into other USB slots on your PC? Are you perhaps trying to sync it through an USB extension cord, or maybe USB hub? I had problems with my PC recognizing the THD if I tried syncing that way. Best results were plugging it directly into the back side of the casing.
The reason I'm asking this is that if you have too many USB devices plugged in, it's possible that the USB voltage drops too low and devices won't connect to the computer.
I tried on 5 different computers, all available USB ports.
On a new computer, sometimes on the device screen it shows up Active Sync but that is all, no sync occurs. If i try again on that computer, i get the same result as i get using the computer at home or work.
The device cannot conect as a Disk Drive
Is there a way to reinstall Active Sync on HTC ? My guess is that this software is all gone with the wind (even i performed a hard reset). The big question is what the hell happened ? Could be a ROM fault ? I mention i never tried to change ROM, the only software i installed was S2U2 and Core Player.
If by monday it wont work, then i'll send it into service (i have warranty). But i hate service
all out of ideas...
Any ideas ?
Which items are checked when you go to Settings/connections/Usb to Pc/ on youre phone?
Have you tried to use another memory card (because youre problems started with copying)?
Hi there,
I've had my HD2 for 2 weeks now and its been working perfectly. I decided to hard reset my phone and start again from scratch. However, now when I connect it to my PC it doesn't connect or recognise it at all, it charges though. I also tried it on my laptop, thinking it might be my PC but its just the same. This is really frustrating and any help would be greatly appreciated.
Goto "Start/Menu/All Settings/Connections/USB to PC" and ensure ActiveSync button is green.
If you are running Vista or Win7 you have to install Windows Mobile Device Center. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/downloads/microsoft/device-center-download.mspx
If not the normal Active Sync will not see the phone.
Hey guys. I know this a old thread. I notice ever since I used the program here to change the radio on my htc hd2 that my computer no longer detects my phone with snyc cable even if I have Windows Mobile Center 6.1 installed an such. The programs pop up though when I look on device manager there no unknown devices or anything. In fact I don't even hear a sound of any sort that a usb device was plug into my pc same thing on my laptop. I even put back original tmobile rom on my htc hd2 no resolve. When I fflash it with Leoimg.tbh or how ever you spell it I put it in my sd card. Any ideas on how to get the old phone to work on windows 10 again? or is something mess up in the coding on official rom or on how I flash it back to stock?. I wish I had a old pc with windows vista to see if it just windows 10 or what. Just seems so odd
no reaction from phone nor pc
Hi, guys i have similar problem, but it has nothing to do with Active Sync. The device won't notice that it is connected to the pc (it won't ask (this option is ticket) if it should act as card reader, modem or Active Sync) so as pc won't show new device. Strangely, while the device is connected into an outlet charger via cable including data wires and "don't charge if connected to a pc" option is ticket in hd2, it acts as it is connected to a pc and won't charge. When it is connected to a charger with unseparable cable (which i suppose hasn't have data wires) it starts carkit menu. For me it seems like something is shorted but i'd like to hear some other suggestions before i try to disassemble it and look inside.
