Ive had a few customers come in over the last week with screens that wont rotate. i read on the t-mobile forums that sometimes you need to tap the phone to get the accelerometer "unstuck" (which has never fixed it). instead i did a master reset and it fixed the issue on all the devices. one phone had tons of apps installed, which could have been an explanation, but today the guy had a brand new one purchased yesterday w/ no apps that wouldnt rotate until we reset it. he says it rotated at first then stopped.
and fyi, rotation was enabled in the settings
any ideas? it seems software related.
Hi mate, this site shows you how to fix it:

Have the same issue. 3 hours ago i had no problems with the accelerometer at all. everything was working fine.
then all of a sudden i notice that its not working. only change i did was upgrading from RA recovery 1.2.1H to 1.2.3H. after that, all was still ok. then now its not working all of a sudden.

I'm on my third G1. The first one died to some strange graphics issue where the screen would go completely pixilated and wacky on me. I think the graphics processor was overheating. On the second one the touch screen died about the same time the speaker in started buzzing during calls.
Luckly because TMobile extends your warranty 90 days every time you get a new phone, I've only had to pay for shipping. I got the latest one, and immediately installed Cyanogen 4.2.5 on it. No problems. Then I followed Michael Mayhew's instructions for the maps update to get Navigation.
I can't get the GPS to work at all. I've since tried going back to RC29, or the base Cyanogen 4.2.5 without the maps hack. I've tried other GPS applications such as the Chartcross GPSTest. I can't get a read at all on any of them. I don't know if it was working before the updates, because I never tried to use maps before I installed the mod.
So I'm wondering somehow a radio update was applied that broke this phone, or if there is anything I can do to change the gps drivers around. Anyone with similar GPS failure issues?
I don't really want to return this one as I've only had it one day!
Yes, similar issues. No solution thus far. I also did not test GPS before flashing. OOPS?!? And now it no longer works, but I can't tell if that was the case to begin with.
I followed the same procedure (CM 4.2.5, Navigation mod), and had the same result--broken GPS. "My Location" not working, "Searching for GPS" forever, etc.
So two possibilities I can see:
1) hardware problem w/GPS
2) one or a combination of CM 4.2.5 + Nav = broken GPS
I have seen a few people on these boards say their GPS doesn't work all of a sudden. In fact, there are stock Droid owners with issues.
Can anybody chime in?
Hmmm
So for about 10 minutes on Friday it started working again. Totally random, I have no idea why. I was at a party and decided to see if it was working. All of a sudden I had signal (using GPSTest) and google maps found my location.
I've since tried it several times, rebooting, and doing a bunch of other stuff. I can't get it working again. Total fluke! So frustrating!
Well now the new version of google maps is in the market. I've successfully installed that one but still no GPS.
Im having the same issue on my G1 right now. Sorry for the Zombie thread, but did this ever get resolved?
I've had the gps fail on my phone and others I know have also. The g1 seems to have issues with the gps antenna strip breaking internally so one minute you'll have reception, the next.. nothing. Only solution is to find a new antenna strip and replace it (good luck!)
Aside from possible hardware failures, the GPS units on these phones tend to be very weak. Sometimes it *IS* impossible to get a strong enough signal to lock on, even when out in the open if there is something nearby that can reflect the GPS signals.
However note that these are AGPS devices, which means that with a cell connection and a data connection, and given that google knows the coordinates of the cell tower you are connected to, it is able to load assistance data (almanac + accurate time synchronization via NTP), and this will *GREATLY* improve your chances of getting a good lock and greatly reduce the time it takes.

I doubt that it was the GPU overheating. Your phone would burn your hand if it got that hot.
The in-call buzzing could be corrected by shifting the screen a little bit while it is happening. It is related to GSM interference with the speaker. The speaker is literally playing the radio waves emitted by the phone. The touchscreen issue was probably a broken cable... also related to moving the screen.

What radio version are you running?
I've also had no luck getting a GPS signal ever since I installed hacked navigation... I wonder if that's the problem? Has anyone tried removing the hacked navigation, to see if that solves the problem?
BTW, the problem started on CM 4.1 with EBI0 radio (2.22.19.26I), and still persists with CM 5.0.7... Has anyone tried upgrading their radio to 2.22.23.02? How about the folks that have gone back to the Updated Rogers EBI1 Radio (3.22.26.17)?
I have been having the "searching for gps" problem as long as I can remember (although I just got this phone a month or two ago)....I remember trying to install the hacked navigation or something so maybe that messed it up?...this phone was never opened, and I would hate to have to open it up to see if it is a hardware issue because I may not put it back as it was. IDK what to do, I even started a thread about it and tried every solution I could find and nothing worked for me....
I wish someone could chime in here with some insight...but it is also nice to hear others with this issue and their advice/ideas also...
Has anyone tried un-rooting and returning the phone back to complete stock and wiping everything ? has that worked for anyone?
Yesterday I installed a demo of the game 'Winds of Steel' on my Epic. It uses the accelerometer to control the motion of a fighter plane, but I immediately noticed that the motion sensing was way off. It jumps from extreme up to extreme down with no mid-range. Left and right movements are fine, but the up/down issue makes the game unplayable. I checked the forums and even chatted with the developer, and no one seems to have had a similar issue. I've reset the horizontal calibration, rebooted the the phone and even re-installed the game and I still get the same thing. A friend who has a stock Epic says it runs great on his phone, so I'm wondering if it has something to do with Froyo.
I'm running the Quantum ROM with the DK28 modem and EXT4 on my Epic. If anyone else has a similar problem, please let me know. Everything else runs flawlessly on this phone, so this one has me stumped.
Thanks!
I have the same problem from running dk28 (even though I'm back on 2.1 now). Have you tried rooting and then running sensorcalibutil_yamaha ?

You may have one of the Epics like mine that had their accelerometer borked when you went to DK28. The way I corrected it was:
1. Go to settings -> display
2. Choose Horizontal Calibration
3. Turn the phone over so it is face down, and place it so the bottom edge is hanging off of a table, so you can just access the "calibrate" button.
4. Hit "calibrate" (while phone is upside down)
5. Enjoy your properly calibrated accelerometer.
Those of us that had the problem think it is possible due to the sensor data getting written incorrectly on certain phones with DK28.
I wish I could take credit for the process I laid out, but I don't remember who told me about it a month or 2 ago.
Hope this helps!
Calibrating it upside down did the trick. Thanks! I never would have thought to try that.
I'll have to mention it to the developer in the event that other people contact him.
I don't think it's an issue with the game - I think the problem lies in the DK28 update, because I know there are lots of other programs that were affected by it, not just that game.
I'm just glad the solution worked out for you.
Yeah, this issue isn't game-specific. I can't play X-Plane or use Google Sky Map (to look up) because of it.
I've tried multiple times to fix it in 2.1, to no avail. I'm considering flashing to dk28 again to fix it and then hoping the fix will remain if I then flash back to 2.1
Update: I flashed to dk28, calibrated upside down, flashed back to 2.1, and then ran sensorcalibutil_yamaha to fix the rotation issue. It fixed my issue so now the pitch is registering correctly!

GPS problem solved!
Have had huge problems with my GPS and sought advice both here and other forums.
EVERYTHING has been tried, all possible combinations of room's, radios, and ril'files, fasterfix, gps status, fastreboot, delete cache Dalvik etc. I can not count all the times I've gone out on the porch and pointed my HD to the sky with new hope but no result. The best I have achieved is fix during the 5-10 minutes with an accuracy of about 140m .....
Then I found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qm_z65LA8k
Thank you knglaser
It seems that the GPS antenna sits in the flash cover!
I tried to press the flashcover and it worked just like an on and off switch for the GPS, satelites just fell in and in a matter of seconds I had the fix of 10 satellites This with an accuracy of 5-6m.
Picked out the blitz cover and "adjusted" the contacts between the cover and the phone and put it back in place, it took about 2 minutes.
After this operation GPS works perfectly
I am now happy since this has been incredibly annoying, I use GPS to both training and in the car and have not been to happy to send the phone back to repair since this usally takes long time.
Hope this can help others who are struggling with the same problem?
Thank you for this. At first i dismissed this as my gps problems only started immediately after the ota gb upgrade installed - it was then taking over 4 minutes to get a fix. However in desperation i took phone out of case - simply pressed the cover in the place shown in video (didn't even have to remove) and hey presto now get fix in seconds. Put phone back in case and all is still well.
Simple but yet very effective - thank you.
Not sure why the upgrade should have triggered this problem though?

Sadly, pushing the cover down is not working for me. Thanks for the video though. I will have to get some tools and pop the cover off to see if it looks like my contacts are no good as well.
apparently i solved my gps problem but not like above. i tried but didnt worked. So i install the new version of gps test, go to settings and then i push clear AGPS from top.then update agps.restart application and seems to work now. I will see. Pls tell me if you try like me and what is your experience
update: unfortunately the problem come back again...
Any more who has tried if this helps? I'm about to tonight

Dear all,
i have a Dell Streak 5, with following specs:
Android Version: 2.2.2
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9-perf
Build Nr: 15609
The issues are:
- If i use the phone on my pocket with screen to my leg, when i need to unlock screen, i usualy can't, its kind of crashed...
- If i have the wireless ON, and go out from home, usually phone crashes , and when i go to use it, i see there was a reset. Seems that this wireless is kind of instable and make mobile phone crash.
I would like to upgrade something to try to solve this small issues, can anybody help me?
Thank you
Tiago
I forgot:
Baseband Version: GAUSB1A135100-EU
thanks.
I don't know what to tell you as far as wifi crashing your phone. That's never happened to me. As far as the other issue, seems pretty common. I think the recommended "fix" is to not carry it with screen facing your leg. I'm sure that's not what you want to hear....but its the best I got.
i can't explain why you wifi makes your phone crash, but for the impossibility to unlock the screen. i had the same problem, and somebody told me the problem was the heat of the leg that makes the screen tilt. so i bought an otterbox case with a belt clip, so with the screen untouched it works perfectly.
for the screen against leg issue, I just toggle the power off then on and it works.
yes, i agree to lordmorphous, don't face your screen to your leg..
just in case, you may try to calibrate it, or if the problem still, maybe you can re-flash to another latest stock rom.
I have never experienced the screen issues involved with facing the screen towards my leg, and I always put my Streak in my pocket with the screen facing my leg. I guess so far I've gotten lucky.

I had got such issue that can't unlock the screen when I used the official ROM.
But there is not such problem when I use the Power Rom V1.1 now...

The ROM makes no difference. I run 360 on my Streak.
I met a guy in a train station, and since there are not a lot ppl with such mob, i decided to ask. In fact, with screen faced outside, the issue finished. Strange..
Related with stock ROM, i think this is my next step: upgrade! the process dell.com.blablabla is always crashing, and sometimes i need to wait to use the phone. awww, not to say that i can't synch with my outlook
I am a bit disappointed with this phone/tab, i was expecting that it could work better.
Any tips on ROM? I am actually trying to use titanum backup to backup data, but it says again cannot root! How i root it?
Thanks again.
Tiago
Everything You Always Wanted To Know About The Streak But Were Too Busy Bricking It
That link there is your first step, for it explains how to root and how to do various other things. Now...I tend NOT to recommend using Titanium Backup since in my experience it screws up when restoring items. Your mileage may vary.
As to a ROM, stick with a stock ROM for now until you are comfortable with the rooting process. I have attempted to use GingerStreak but had a problem with the camera app so I had to go back. Flashing a ROM could fix your issues since a bad flash has been known to be source of the force closes.
Hi again,
finaly i tried a simple method: the gingerbreak, and rooted. Now that is rooted, i want try a diff Android version (from 2.2 to 2.3?).
Is there any recommendation?
Of course first i would like to backup all the data (already from the SDCard) but i am talking about the ContactList (i tried to use the simple: export, but onde again i got an error :/)
Any tips?
Thanks for all the help.

I've been having lots of little problems too.
My device randomnly decideds to restart time to time. There doesn't seem to be a pattern to it that I've worked out yet. But it's crashing right now and I have to soft reset it.
Another thing, if I have it in normal landscape mode but turn it on while holding it portrait mode or the screen isn't in the same orientation that it was before the screen turned off, Dell Stage often crashes.

Exactly, mine restart very often too, but i think i know why. Try disable wireless before leaving your "home network"... in my case, it solves that crashings... only crash if dell stage crashes too... but most of times, its solved.
The only "bugs" i have are: camera button does not work, and when i turn screen on, the "unlock slide button" is ALWAYS in the portrait position.
I wonder, if this is solved with a new android version, or dell "libraries" update?
Thanks.

for all those who think the problem does show up when u put it in the pocket facing your leg ..... i had the same view two weeks ago when suddenly i ran into this problem. i think best solution is calibrating the screen .....

Calibrating the screen was what i've done when i could not unlock my mob phone for 1 week, i was desperate
After that, i solved all the screen issues using screen outside and not against leg.

It seems my accelerometer has died. Level apps don't register any change. Apps don't register landscape vs portrait. I've seen a couple other threads via search, but has anyone figured out if its a hardware or software issue.
If it's a software issue, I'd try flashing a new stock rom, or resetting the phone to factory settings first.. and see if that fixes the issue... if it doesn't its prob hardware.
I would like to confirm a second case. My accelerometer died about 6 weeks ago, and reflashing did nothing.

If you are able to, I'd warranty the phone for repair.
