Hi all,
I need help,suggestions,anything with an issue I've had for a while. Since the time I started loading WM6 the screen has been randomly fading to white. I have LSVW latest rom 22/4 SE and 1.40.10 radio and 1.40oli although it doesn't matter what rom you load. I tried going back to WM5 and its better but now still fades to white as well.
on advise from oli and legolas I purchased a new battery but still have the same issue.
I have dropped my phone once which resulted in a crack to the right of the DEL/CR keys so could it be a HW issue and if you think so is it one I could open up the phone and fix?
Any and all help appreciated
IN FACT IF SOMEONE CAN RESOLVE THE ISSUE I WILL DONATE SOME CASH TO THEM!

The conclusion is that it's hardware related. It may be as simple as one of the internal ribbon connectors having a less than firm connection. It may be brought on my anything from physical movement or pressure to internal pressure if the device gats warm. However, it is possible that there is a failing component. IMHO, a case of take it for replacement/repair or first check connectors if your brave and not worried about a warranty.

HHmmm interesting thread .. the only issue i have out of that is the fade to white one.
Maybe Hardware .. i got the phone off ebay and now it has a crack in it .. so i dare say it isnt under warranty any more. (even though its a max of 6 months old).
It may also be software. I experienced the WSOD on my JASJAM when playing with the GPS-related DLL's. Once this problem appeared when switching on the camera. The screen would turn white and soft reset would not fix this, only power off/on would sort it out. Seems that the drivers do not reset (some of) the hardware to a known state on boot.
Had EXACTLY the same problem. Hoped it would be a software problem. Hard-reset a few times to no avail. Upgraded to a couple of the WM6 ROMs. No change. I did notice that when it was cool it tended not to happen, but after being on the phone a couple minutes or using the PDA for a while, it would do it AGAIN.
One weird thing I noticed was that if I did a Soft-reset and held down the Left Soft-key, I could "force" it to fade to white on start-up! VERY WEIRD.
I finally bit the bullet, and sent it back to Telstra to get it sorted. Didn't want to void warranty myself.
It has been just over 2 weeks since I sent it off, and They have sent this reply...

Their reply was not very technical - does not surprise me however. The people who repair these devices are usually faced with some component/connection/screen or a m/board that needs replaced. They often fail to take account of something as basic as the case pressing on the screen or other components - particularly when device is warm. So they replace the component they think is faulty and then discover the problem is still there. With this issue in particular I think that there are no faulty components just the case is a fraction of a millimetre too tight for the internal components and hence swapping out parts can have no effect. With this fault I advise people to go for a replacement not a repair if possible.
NB: This issue should not be confused with white screen that may appear after installing particular software or when an application crashes, or when the flashing of a new ROM goes wrong! The hardware issue arises most commonly when the device gets warm or put another way goes white after maybe 10 minutes of use and will continue to go white even after hard reset.

My phone screen recently (4-5 days ago) started to go white. I never saw this happen with my own eyes but when i picked up my phone and its sleeping i push the power button to get to an all white screen. I can hear noises when i touch the screen but no image other than white. I can solve this by removing the battery and putting it back in, then my scren works fine....its not verry often just like 1-3 times a day.
I want to try a hard reset but have a question first: My phone is unlocked by the ebay guy i got it from, will a hard reset lock my phone back to Cingular?
Next i want to try upgrading my ROM and Radio and anything else...im looking in the wiki for instructions on how to do this. Any help? What else shouls i upgrade?
Ive only had my Hermes for around 2 months so im new to much of this.

I recently purchased a Used Imate Jasjam (Ex Telstra Australia) with this issue.
I pulled the unit apart, and reseated and pressed the Power and LCD Display Data Cables... attempting to ensure they were firmly fastened.
I then upgraded to LVSW's Latest WM6 Release.
I have had the Phone go to White once in that timeframe since. I brought it back by pressing the power button of, then one again.
I don't feel that it's really a "100%" Faulty Part... Because it works fine othertimes. It almost seems as if connections or a Data Cable has an Issue.
I'm intending tonight and using the Phone over the weekend to see if the issue continues to occur.

Well, got my phone back after a bit over 3 weeks I think? I kept ringing the repair center and emailing. Finally they said it was ready, and was sent back to the shop I bought it from. Rang the shop "no it's not here yet, we will ring you"... now the repair centre to the shop is a 20 min drive... on the 3rd, I rang again at 1pm and "no it's not here yet, we will ring you when it arrives." At this point I was really getting p*ed off. So I went to the shop, and demanded, and guess what was AT the Shop?!?!?!
Anyway, after 1 friggin day, I have lost the Red & Green phone buttons! As of tonight the whole bottom section no longer work, and the screen has gone white again.
The repair report listed 3 things replaced...one was a "bezel" another was a "poly" something. I will get the report a list the replaced bits if anyone likes, but their descriptions are kind of strange if ya ask me.
Anyway, I have to send the phone back for repairs again, which could take another 3 weeks +, which I think is completely PATHETIC OF TELSTRA, especially for the fact they dont give the same phone or even similar to "loan" while I wait for my defective $1300 phone to get "repaired"... (more like 'fiddled with' & "yeah, she'll be right mate"...

My girlfriends phone was having the same problem. Try popping out your SD card and putting the phone into/out of sleep and see if that brings back a visible screen. Thats how we determined her situation was a hardware problem and not a problem with the rom.

Yes, sadly this is kind of predictable as I said in an earlier post in this thread:

This is why, as I said, get a replacement not a repair if possible. My view is that the individual components are fine but connectors come loose or the heat generated causes pressure to be put on the screen etc So it's a problem with some cases and how the innards in some cases get squeezed. So off course changing the top poly board, connectors, bezel gasket, may by pot luck make a difference but is just as likely to make no difference at all.

Status Report:
After having my phone playing Video's Through the Night (My Way of a "Stress Test" to Generate Heat) I woke up the find the screen to be "almost completely" White.
Usually its gone completely, however in this instance I was able to see the icons through the whitewash.
I put the phone into sleep and back out and the Display is fine again.
Being that these phones are much easier to pull apart and put back together than my old JasJar I might to do some further experimentation.
I think the issue will have something to do with either one of the following
- Heat
- Pressure on the LCD from Parts Around it
- Faulty Ribbon or Power Leads to the LCD
My suggestions
- In the Case of Heat... I'll run the Same Test, with the Phone Directly in front of a small airconditioning unit I have.
- In the Case of Pressure, I'm going to look and see if I can place some extra Insulation Tape or Similar on the Phone to relieve this
- I wish I could find somewhere to buy the Replacement Ribbon Cables but I don't know where I can get them in Australia... any ideas?

We wait to see. Mind you one guy on these boards found he could get half an hour from his device if he put it in the freezer for a while - so I'm not sure that air-con will be strong enough!!!

Well Results.....
After pulling apart the unit and reconnected, I think I found my cause to simply be excess pressure.
I've removed the "Black Plastic" Micro SD Card from its Blanking Plate.
Since I've done this... not one White Screen Whatsoever.
I don't use an SD Card, so the issue is resolved for me, however it is very interesting.
Could be Pressure or Heat (Small Hole Might Increase Airflow/Allow for Greater Dissapation or something)

I got the device from my former boss who did already complain about this "white screen" issue on his O² XDA trion with original ROM. (honestly i did not really believe him due to my experience with couple of other devices so after i got the device i was just wondering - ok back to the facts).
I installed on Friday the Windows Mobile VI Pro - BLACK 2.5 Release and until today it was running (as far as i remember expect one time) nearly perfect w/o white screens. About 45min ago, i flashed the device with BLACK 3.0 Release and got until now about 5-10 times a white screen.
I assume this is not a hardware ONLY issue but indeed very strange.
I'll go back to 2.5 and will look forward if i get again the white screen or it'll be ok.

You are right to ask the question "is it hardware or software".
1
We know a white screens can arise if folk duff up flashing a new ROM.
2
We know there is a hardware caused white screen that comes and goes often when device gets warm.
3
But there maybe white screens caused by some kinds of crashing software or a buggy ROM etc
Crucially in terms of finding a cure will be distiguishing between these.
2 for most people is easy - take it back and get a replacement.
1 is a matter for the ROM upgrading and fixing boards
3 is a case of trying different ROMs testing 3 party software by selective installation until the problem starts or stops.
In your case I am worried that this is a number 2 device as it did sometimes get the problem before you flashed the ROM and now it's worse. It may only be worse because this particular ROM is generating more heat and consequently more white screens. (see explanations elsewhere).
I suppose if it's an occasional problem you might live with it but otherwise it's replacement at best and repair as a rather dodgy alternative.

Hey Mike,
well, before flashing the device with a custom ROM, in my opinion it was really difficult to use it.
By flashing it with V 2.5, it was very good usable and with V 3.0 it returned to become more unusable. Nevertheless, i upgraded 10min ago with HARD-SPL-V7 and it's running fine now (i've been wating with downgrading to V 2.5. If it returns to become unstable, i will downgrade to V 2.5 again.
I'll keep you informed.

White screen - in my case definitely a hardware issue

i was testing and playing around with my Hermes and today i found the problem (very funny because now i can't reproduce it anymore but just read ahead).
Today i was playing around and after pressing by accident on the case of the Hermes, the screen appeared disappeared and changed into white.

I was removing iGuidance v3 and in the middle of it, the phone turned off. Thought I just hit the power button to turn off screen and press power again. Nothing. Thinking it just crashed, I held down power button, nothing; removed battery and replaced it and hit power, nothing. Put it on the charger and it doesnt have any lights showing its charging.
The phone is less than 6 months old, could it be the battery? What should I do? any help here appreciated.
Have you tried a reset press and hold both the side OK button and the power button and then press the reset button by putting the stylus into the hole in the bottom of the device.? This takes sometimes more try's.
Now do a soft reset (again put your stylus in the hole on the bottom of the device, dont press any other buttons).
Mostly this should do the trick!
Ok, replaced battery today and still no power nor charge. So how do I reset? Hold power and ok button down and then replace stylus in hole? Do you mean the ok button on the side or on the front?
You may want to do a HARD reset, not a soft one.
Tried hard and soft resets by putting stylus in pin hole. No luck, think its toast. Also tried the battery in/battery out trick while on charge.
Ive heard of phones crashing or being bricked after a bad rom install or taking off usb too soon, but removing a program and it dying is different. Never had any issues with this phone. Is there a way to test it w/ a multimeter to see if mobo is bad?
What about replacing the little round battery thats on the mainboard? Would that do anything?
Isn't it still covered under warranty? If so, just have them fix or replace it bro.
No warranty. Replaced the screen myself a long time ago.
I just got an email from HTC telling me basically how to preform a hard reset. Well it didnt work. My phone is a paper weight now. Ive never had to do a hard reset before. Used Memaid to do the soft reset all the time. Ill keep trying and fix it eventually by either replacing the mainboard or digging deeper for a fix. Thanks for help everyone

I called the number for troubleshooting first and was told that this isnt a fix that anyone can do on their own. It must be sent in for further analysis. What was interesting about the conversation is when I asked if he had ever heard of this problem before. He said he gets that problem all the time with these models. Ive never of this happening. Never found any other posts about it either. I bet its a problem with the phone holding a charge on the mainboard, like a faulty capacitor most likely its gonna have to be j-tagged at the repair center.

I don't think this is a very common problem as they say. Yes, there are many reports of the failing to charge issue and stuck on the red LED light, but only a tiny number of absolutely dead devices.
Curiously, the service manual refers to an on-board fuse. But later states that when this is blown that those without board level repair authority should "replace the m/board". Clearly then, this is either not a fuse in the ordinary sense of the word or refers to any component that may be "blown" and would require detailed tests to track the problem.
Just for info: the m/board is not a basic simple one in terms of soldering / component removal and replacement. Speaking personally, I would not attempt anything more than very basic work on this board - perhaps just on some of the "cruder" connections here and there. Boards in these types of phone make the more typical boards in other electrical equipment look like ironmongery.

Ive examined the mainboard and looked it over very carefully for any burnt resistors or capacitors. Nothing out of the ordinary. The components would be a huge project to replace, their soooo small, only the mini USB charger port could actually be done by hand.
What would the fuse look like? Is it soldered to the board? I see a small round battery near the PTT button. Is this something that can be replaced? Probably messes up the BIOS when removed like a computer motherboard.
I shouldnt have been so quick to sell off my Wizard before this happened.
often fuses are no longer used, they use a for example 1 Ohm resistor of limited power rating instead.
You might try to follow the current on the mobo while the charger is connected, see whether you can locate the disconnecting (faulty) part.....but the size of the components makes this a very difficult job....my gues would be that the problem is located near the power entry/regulator if nothing goes, meaning no action while on battery nor w the charger connected.

But these are multi-layered boards, it will be very hard to trace a connection on it.
Ok, so I lost my motherboard. Probably something killed it during the whole uninstall process. Made peace w/ that. Maybe bury it in the backyard or something. LOL
I bought it to replace my aging 8125, but wonder if I did it for the wrong reason. I thought the new processor would be way faster, but it really wasnt that fast. 8525 has a nicer housing, camera and 3G (which i never used), A2DP that doesnt skip. Never even used the pre-installed programs like Mobi-TV, Telenav, etc.
Anyways, anyone think a 8125 motherboard will fit in a 8525 housing?
I have been using AT&T 8525 for about 5 months now. Dropped it in office a week back and it was on an uncarpetted surface. No external damage but it powered off. I had to try for a while to power it on but eventually it did power on.
Since this event it just powers off on its own. Right now, even minor jerks cause it to shut down. When you pull the phone out of your pocket after a while, it has already shut down!!! Took it for repair to a local cell phone repair assuming it might have some connector damage but they could not figure out the problem. They opened it, cleaned the interiors (as it had dust build up) and according to them everything appeared normal.
What would you guys recommend? It is running Schaps 4.30. I see that HTC has a repair service in US.....had anyone tried that?
Sounds like battery might be a little bit loose... Jam something in behind the battery to make sure of constant connection... You're not the first with this complaint. The battey terminals may have been bent back just enough to cause this intermittant problem, especially when it gets jolted, the battery disconnects from the teminals causing an automatic shutdown due to no power.. Just thank god you didn't break the terminals off. Sometimes can be fixed but if the break is at board level, you may as well sell it off on ebay for parts because its just about impossible to fix then.

Very smart ultramag!! Your reply made me think what I did after it fell down. At that time I did think that the battery was loose as it was running when on active syn (powered by laptop) but not when I removed the cord. I did turn the terminals a bit and it powered on after few attempts (the drop must have given the circuitry some shock to recover after sometime).
I have jammed a paper on the side of the battery opposite the battery terminal. Will report back in a day or two if it still gives any problems. That should help others with the same problem.
Also this event has taught me that invisible shield (the plastic shield that we stick on) perhaps may not be the best protection. Case is a must to absorb the shock!
ok the problem still continues despite sticking a paper on the battery side (opp the terminal). I do believe that the battery was part of the problem. Before sticking in the paper, it used to give me a Red LED for few seconds when I attempted charging and then turned to amber. Now that problem is not there....it turns to amber right away on plugging in the device.
So part of the problem is addressed but the Hermes still powers down on its own when subject to minimum shock (in your pockets and you are walking around in the office or driving a car). What do you suggest? Should I send it in to HTC? Are they good about addressing repair issues?
... and yet I think it probably is the contacts as suggested above. It may be that it's a little more than just the contacts not pressing firmly on the battery though. There have been cases where a fall has actually broken/cracked the solder joints between the contacts and the board. A trickier thing to fix unless you have some skills in that direction.

AT&T powers off after drop - HTC's take on the situation
Ok so here is HTC's evaluation of the situation.
They want to change the main board (mother-board I guess). In addition, though the phone is just 4 months old (was purchased refurb from AT&T) and has barely any scratches, they would replace the casing, the keyboard and the structure that holds the keyboard and LCD. And they would ONLY charge me $272. Isn't that ridicuously amazing??
To me it seems they can't figure out what the hell is going on, so lets just go ahead and replace a bunch of things and one of them should be a hit.
I have asked them to send the phone back. Mike, do you think the main-board could be the issue? Any recommendations of who I could try for repair.....or what I should ask the repair guy to look into to find out if the main board is the issue or not?
Only $272??? Good God! That lot would cost you around $450 if it were fixed at HTC UK!!
If the drop caused cracking internally then that may be why they want to replace the rest. if there are known defects that are not repaired, they cannot guarantee the repair and so will not do it at all if you do not agree to the whole thing.
of course, you could be right and they have no clue and simply want to replace everything and hope something gets fixed....
Don't PPCtechs also do repairs on that side of the pond?

I fell in the not-so-rare problem of the broken microUSB female plug on the motherboard of my HD2: the phone won't charge or sync at all.
After searching around, I found that quite a few people have gone into my same trouble, because the sync plug is directly soldered on the mainboard and is also the phone part that gets most of mechanic stress during the device's lifecycle.
In a few words: seems that almost all phones will eventually break.
I tried with HTC repair but they refused to repair it both under warranty and under paid repair.
I don't want to throw away my phone after I spent 550€ for it!!! I would like to find a way to revive it!
I currently have two options:
Replace motherboard by myself or with the help of an expert technician
Buy a Powermat charger to charge the phone again
Third option could be buying a Chinese external charger I found somewhere supplied with 3 spare batteries, doing cold swap of each battery when one discharges: not a smart option.
I can't currently find a motherboard for replacement, since the only one on eBay that the seller doesn't refuse to ship to Italy is software-bricked, and I don't have the tools needed to unbrick it.
Option 2 allows me to avoid opening the phone and avoid potential disasters, but it won't allow me to sync the phone via USB. Not even to HSPL it (I love running Android dual boot sometimes when I need to run a certain program unavailable for WP6.5/7).
So, since I really need to synchronize the phone with my computer's Outlook for Calendar and Contacts, and after telling you about my current options, what do you suggest me to do?
Do you think it's possible to sync to WMDC using Bluetooth? (I read that wifi is not an option)
Or, do you know how could I unbrick a motherboard without buying expensive devices? I can travel easily around my country.

what reason did HTC give for refusing to repair it?
If you didn't drop it or spill water on it how can they refuse warranty on it?
Warranty refused because they say the defect is unrepairable.
Initially, when they refused warranty repair I thought "OK, it could be wear..." but when I saw the photos of how the plug is soldered to the mobo, I found it's a design disaster!!!! Even I know that the plug accumulates so much mechanical energy during lifetime that if it's not strengthened properly that energy will make the very small solderings crash. This is also why keys are not physically embedded on the mobo!!! You know you could break the keyboard because of wear
HTC then asked me to send the phone for paid repair but again the repair lab refused for unrepairable damage!! Incredible!!!

If it's "unrepairable" they need to send you a new phone...

I've been "calling back" since April... we are now in July and nothing yet happened
Also, I just found that plugging the battery again and doing a hard reset shown that the touchscreen is not working anymore!!!!
I couldn't even sell the phone for spare parts once the digitizer is broken (by the way, not even a single broken pixel ever!!)
They sent me a mail today, "we are investigating"

Ya HTC can be so stupid about that sometimes. It's funny on Sprint they would have switched out the phone no questions asked, but with GSM they don't want to do anything for you.
whatever that means I hope they do the right thing.

Man it sounds like HTC is giving you a load of crap, sucks to hear stories such as yours. HTC should just exchange your HD2 for you in m,y opinion.
You asked about how to get a main board debricked, I just sent you a PM with some information on that.
Oh and "we are investigating", just what is it to investigate. Your HD2 is malfunctioning because of a hardware issue and is still under warranty, they should replace it.

Just to tell you what it finished like.
HTC ultimately replied me "this device won't ever be accepter for repair".
I called a lawyer for that, because I just found that when I powered the phone on, the touchscreen was gone, and I have proof that the touchscreen was still working when I gave them the phone

My Note 4 screen has started locking up (i.e. continuing to work in the background and the screen is still responding to system events (SMS notifications etc) but it is not responding to touch.
I have tried several factory resets, after which the screen stays responsive for about 3 or 4 pages, then locks up again.
Background: the phone was rooted about a year ago, to get around the SD card restriction, and has worked fine up until the last week. I gave the phone to a friend who put CWM-based recovery manager and the latest Samsung Android 5.1.1 on it. After setting the phone up successfully and downloading all my apps on to it and getting everything running perfectly, I used CWM to back up the OS image onto the SD card.
Phone worked great for about a day, then started freezing. Wiping the caches / restoring / factory resets and all permutations of these have so far proved ineffective...
I took the phone in to a repair shop last night, the guy reckoned the problem was down to a poor screen replacement, and they hadn't used the correct bonding cement, and that the screen had separated from the LCD such that capacitance couldn't do its thing.
However if this were the case, the screen would not work at all, even briefly after a system reset.
The repairer is simply dismantling and rebuilding the phone to see if it's a loose/dirty connector somewhere. He's not going to try to fix it with firmware/software.
Any pointers or suggestions gratefully received

I was getting stutters like this, and after a month my phone started shutting down when I hit 50% or so. I replaced the battery off eBay, and that cleared the problem up. I think sine quickcharge 2.0 batteries fail faster than they should, but a Sammy battery is only $6.50 or so, so I don't mind buying one more often fir the quickcharge benefits.
Maybe try a new battery?
Samsung original screen replacements always come with AMOLED+Touchscreen.
If the guy only replaced the touchscreen you have a fake one and yeah i don't need to tell you about chinese replica's quality.
I myself work at a smartphone repair shop and we only use original products to get the best quality for our customers. It's more expensive that way i know but thats better than putting sh*t in there ands the customer needs to come back with the phone.

So it's the dodgy glass doing it? It's definitely not the genuine Samsung part as it gets covered in grease as soon as you touch it.
The weird thing is, if it was the glass then I'd assume it wouldn't work at all; whereas when I do a factory reset it works for a short while then stops...
