Manufacture defect or what !!!!!! - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Accessories

Hello all ..
i am Mohammed from Egypt it's first time to use HTC TYTN 2 and it's wonderful device ... i have a question about something .. i bought my tytn2 5 days ago and when i looked into the usb slot there was this thin gray plastic that has the copper pins in it .. i noticed a small crack in the last right quarter of this gray plastic which make this gray plastic not completely horizontal it's bent down at last two pins from the right .. lol i know it little weird but i want to make sure that this is not manufacture defect .. and if it was i would replace it
thanks all and i hope that someone will tell me whether if i was right or wrong

Hi Mohamed,
Welcome to XDA-DEV's and to the Kaiser (=TyTN II) world !!
I'm sad to tell you I think this gray piece MUST be horizontal and rectangular.
There's a possibility that somebody put the stylus in the USB connection hole instead of the Soft-Reset hole (near to it).
** Possibly your USB connection does not work properly ** so that, if you have the chance, ask for another device or to repair this one.
Have good luck, and don't stop visiting and collaborating with Xda-dev's !!

thanks m8 i told that to HTC supprot here in egypt but they told me that if the charge is working well and sync too so it's ok and if something happen i would go to them and they will change the usb slot ... so what do u think shall stay with this device or make a problem to change it even if it works in charging and sync very well !!!!

A suggestion from my experience: take a copy of all your communications with technical service, etc. so that if you have problems, you'll be able to ask again without loosing warranty.
If you have the chance to have a new device, I think it's better - maybe you can sync or charge "today" but not "tomorrow", or you can't use another cable or headphones.
Even, if you want to sell your device, it looses value with the broken piece.

thanks m8 i will do what u just said .. thanks so much

me and my universal had an accident/coaxial cable ?

hi,
some time ago had car accident and my universal was my sat nav at that point. since it was a serious thing (my car is scraped in germany now ) my uni got demaged. i lost battery and back cocer but all the rest looked OK untis i switched it on. i mean when it does switch on the screen is white and that is all it does. i think the rest is ok cos i can hear some voices made by my uni and the leds are working.
i did some research and it maybe due to the coaxial cable. so i took my uni apart , localized the cable but it seems ok..i mean how do i know if it is its fault ?? if anybady gat a spare one or other sugestions then i am always willing to hear some. the cable costs around 70 GBP so i am not sure if i want to heve a go
cheers,
cudo
Are you sure?
Coaxial Cable? What would it be doing inside a cellphone?
Those are used to transmit TV signals, since they are shielded against radio-frequency interference. Plus they are about as thick as the Uni's base, and very rigid.
Are you sure you read it right?(No offense meant...)
hi, thank you for your wisdom mate but i am sure. try searching "coaxial cable" and you will learn something new....
can someone tell me if the white screen of my uni is caused by this cable or there may be other cause of this problem. after i took it apart and took out the cable it looks as if it is OK. i mean it is not broken or snatched...
advice please !

I've seen posts about the white screen before on here. It seems to happen when people drop them too. Since it has received a strong 'shock' in the car accident, I'd look up posts on dropped phones. Try a search on stuff like 'dopped' + 'white screen'. Hope you can fix it. There are also posts about very cheap repairs being done at local phone repair centers.
Good luck.
Try these for starters - the first one asks a guy who dropped his phone if he can still see inside it on active sync - if so it looks like a screen connector problem:

All right, all right, mea culpa...
Up till now, I thought that was what coaxial cable meant. I didn't know the screen connector was called coaxial too.
So, once again, sorry for posting without knowing...
hi, i am happy now - i took my uni all apart then put it all together acording to mannual and what i have read after c.a hour of strugling with uni i managed to put the batter in and switch the uni on and ...it strarts up normally , no white screen ...everything seems to be alright now. i think it was caused by lose contection of cables and fortunately not the 70 quid coaxial cable itself ...
cheers,

Great news! I bet you're happy. I would be. It seems that strong shocks like being dropped (or being in a car crash mounted on the dashboard) can shock the thing so that the cables become slightly disconnected. Well done for fixing it.
Reading this forum lets me know what I'm in for when I drop mine... It is bound to happen sooner or later. At the moment, I'm keeping a very tight grip on it.

Killed my MDA II Compact?

Dear Forum Users,
fist of all sorry for the fact that my first post is a request, a question and not a contribution - but im really dependent on your knowledge.
Despite the fact that in general it is not recommended to change the cover of your mda (or xda etc) I did it, and seem to have f***** up my display. The device itself is working just fine, i can do active sync, the taping also works (when i switch it off and guess where the yes button from "do you really want to turn off your device" is it actually shuts down properly). the thing is that i dont see anything, its just plain white.
Image:
http://content.imagesocket.com/images/CIMG4803_Small_805.JPG
when dissecting the unit i disconnected the connector from the display to mainboard in order to unmount everything (unfortunately i discovered afterwards that i could also have done it without connecting - dumb philipp :/ , but right now that doesnt change anything for me)
has someone dealt with a problem like mine before? i would be really thankful for any hints or advices to get my baby back to life, otherwise my old vk2000 will be my companion for the next 6 months (i shiver when i just think of it).
thank you in advance,
Philipp
Have you tried to disassembled, and than reassembled it again?
some times the display flat cable, isnt fuly inside the connector...
there is a possibility that you f*** up the connector, but for determine that we need a macro picture of it.
yes i messed with the connector indeed, but as the pins of the strip were down i thought the black piece wont be of that much importance (i can remember i ****ed one up at a regular mobile yrs ago and it was still working)
can i get that thing back to life if i try to squeeze the 2 black parts (formerly one piece) back in or do you say its over?
thank you for your quick reply btw, i appreciate!
http://content.imagesocket.com/images/conn2d8.png
That is not good. i dont think you can do anything but send it to repair. maybe they can replace the connector.
ok, i will call them and check how much it is and if it is even worth having it repaired... if not, then i have a defective compact for sale :/
shayd, thank you!

MDA DEAD!!!!!

Well ladies and jerks, I regret to inform you that my MDA is completely dead. I was in a car accident the other day and it went flying through the air and when I grabbed it off the floor of my car the USB charge plug was loose and had trouble connecting to the computer but still worked. Since then I had put a drop of super glue in there to hold the plug still and everything was fine untill this morning. My phone was left off with no battery in it untill the glue dried and still, everything was fine.
Now this morning when I went to grab my phone it was completely frozen and had 1% of battery life left so I soft reset and plugged the phone in and it was charging fine. I connected it to the computer and it would not connect at all. Now after playing with the cable a bit to get it to connect to the computer, the charge port is completely dead. It will not even let it charge with the charger and the little silver piece inside the plug is falling out.
Does anyone here have any idea what I should do to save my Wizard? I fear it may be the end for it.
Here's the big problem though. My device is CID unlocked and still has the TNT.1437 firmware on it so my warrenty is completely void. T-Mobile will not send me a handset exchange like this.
hi
t-mobile wouldn't send you a warranty replacement even if you had the official windows mobile on it. that is because, after you read the terms and conditions of the warranty, it does not include and in fact states quite clearly that 'excessive' use of the usb cable resulting in damaged charging port will not be replaced.
i realise this is not very helpful, so allow me to be helpful!
download the wizard service manual, if you PM me your email address i can email you a copy of one
what you will have to do is first obtain a new mini usb port from ebay or somewhere similar, i will try to hunt one down in america for you
following the service manual, you need to dismantle your handset, use some sort of rubbing alcohol (nail varnish remover) to get rid of the super glue you put on, first try to re-solder the old connector back onto where it came, or if not solder on the new one after removing the old one.
to be honest, you dont have anything to lose, but you could gain a working mda again!
good luck, and just a disclaimer to say im not responsible for any damage done to yourself, your device or anything else.

hi
so sry to hear about ur accident and damaged MDA
t-mobile will certainly wont give u warranty replacement. It happened with me once also and only way out was ,I took it to a mobile repair shop and got the usb connector replaced for very nominal price.
duke_stix is right, get a mini usb and solder it. If u can do it,very well or take it to a techy to do it properly.
Once it's repaired it will be as good as new, goodluck

Good advice except don't use rubbing alcohol, it damages plastic. Use adhesive remover instead. (At my hospital we use little adhesive remover wipes similar to the alcohol prep pads.) We are told to use this method when cleaning adhesives from plastics and it works.

Thanks. Have you had any luck trying to find a service manual? I have been looking but with no success...
Well I managed to find a wizard service manual written in English for the US and got my MDA taken apart correctly without damaging it(I hope) only to find that all 9 contacts for the USB port are completely severed. Unfortunately I don't have the soldering skills to fix this on my own and there are no local repair shops where I can get it fixed seeing as how I am also out of a car...(see first post) so I am back to a Razr... UGH.... Anyways, I will remain an active member of the community and continue to help others with issues they may be having and help others flash roms because I found that I enjoy helping others.
I will, however, be leaving for a period of time in a few months because I am being deployed and most likely will not be returning with a Wizard but an HTC TyTN II. Don't worry though, I won't forget my friends back here in the Wizard forum( I know too much about these things to just pack up and leave now...)
Hi
sry to hear that,
But just another idea popped in my mind,if u can manage to get mini usb port than u can take it to any electronics repair shop, like tv,radio or any pc repair shop,it can be soldered, since u say u have the service manual u can show them the circuit layout, they can fix it.
yet,if u happen to have any sort or make of mobile (Motorolla,Nokia, samsung) which is pretty old and spent,of which u got no use,c if it has a mini usb port, usually every mobile does have it,and it has 9 connectors, take it out and get it soldered to ur mda.
Well, since its gonner, there's no harn in trying,

First and Foremost,
Thank you sir, for answering the call of your nation. This American & his family thanks you from the bottom of our hearts.
In my ancestral culture's view, a patriot is second only to Saints & the Lord himself. May God watch over you & your team members.
I HAD to tell you that because every serviceman needs to know just how much Americans honor and cherish you!!!
(NEVER pay attention to the liberal media, they are sick diseased haters & hypocrites who are lucky to live in a land where they are allowed to lambast & denegrate those who are truly honorable.)
About your wizard, there are several ways to connect electronic components these days. If an adhesive was used, forget about it. If it was truly soldered, nothing can be easier! You can do it yourself (make sure to get a bulb vacuum for removing old solder and a modern soldering gun). It is so easy, in fact, that a authorized repair facility may do it for you for cheap! And you could always mail it to them, too.
Good Luck & God Speed dharvey4651.
similar problem?
My MDA will charge fine through the USB cable, but will not sync/connect -- it's not even appearing in Device Manager.
Does anyone know if this is definitely a hardware issue, presumably involving the USB port?
Thanks in advance,
Will Stewart
it is possible, your USB cable has problem or try another PC.

Tips for buying a used universal

Hello! could people please share tips and things to remember when buying a used universal? I mean what are the things that you should do to check or find tell tale signs of defect, hardware, the firmware the os, I have already done a search in the forums and already know some, but there might be things that I have missed, so help would be very nice, I will be meeting the seller so I get to inspect the device up close so it would be nice to armed with the info how to inspect the device from how to check the bootload etc.
Thanks for the help and I hope that this helps others too
The Universal can be bought cheap at german eBay. Look for MDA PRO. You should be able to purchase one for around or less than 100 Euro.
Preferably look for the following signs:
1) Unmodded. Many users got the Universal within a contract from the operator, but did not use it much, because it is too big for them. Such Universals are normally in good condition. When advertised that it ships with an OS different than WM5, you know that the owner has been flashing it. I personally don't like that, because that means it belonged to a power user and must be more worn out.
2) Warranty stickers. Make sure the hinges have the warranty stickers inside. If they are missing, the device has been opened. You don't want to purchase one that has been opened.
3) Screen. Screen should be without scratches and should have had always a screen protector.
4) Speaker. The external speaker which is used for calls can break, as it is fitted with some kind of pogo pins. Make sure it is working.
If you get to test the device first, do as this:
- do a call (bring your SIM card)
- check WLAN and Bluetooth (bring a headphone and try it somewhere with WLAN activity)
- bring a SD card and see if it is read
- check for bad pixels
- play a song
- take a picture
- try the keyboard and touch screen
- try all the buttons
If everything works, that is the best you can check it for.
Of course it could break the next day, but it shouldn't.
Cheers,
vma
Great guide vma!
I´ll just add:
Take special care on the swivel piece (The one that gives Uni it´s great and unbeatable form factor: PDA - Micro Lap top)
take care of another thing when i bouted my universal after i used it for about 1 week the phone was hangs soo much the reason was in the memory crd .....so you must try a memory crd and play a small video on it about 10 minutes
The most important thing everyone forgot to mention is USB port. When looking for a device, see if the port moves in any way or wiggles in its opening. See if the device synchronises with AS, charges etc.
The fact the device had been flashed or opened wouldn't play a huge part for me if everything else works well and the body is in sound condition, e.g. the hinge is not loose, the screen rotates and closes properly, all keys are present and work, keyboard backlight works with and without sensor etc.
Speakers don't just break, as post No2 claims (POGO PINS??), but it is good to check that phone is capable of making/receiving calls, you can hear the other party and the other party can hear you, can play music and earphone plug is in working condition/attached properly
Not reading SD or SIM card is a biggie, dim screen, lost touch sensitivity, scratched or damaged digitizer, worn out buttons - all obvious signs. You can open the back, remove the battery and SIM card and check for a small white blotting paper sticker covering the small mainboard pins under the SIM card, any change in color towards pink - do not buy.
@enigma1nz:
Shame on me, I did indeed forget the USB port!!! You should of course check both: charging and Active Sync connection. A broken USB connector is a mayor issue and hard to solder without proper equipment.
Regarding the speaker: I am speaking out of experience, as one faild on me. The speaker is like a small button and it has two contact plates. They are not pogo pins, but act like them. The speaker will be pressed by the case against two contact points on the PCB. What happens is that apparently some car-holders do too much pressure on the sides of the Universal casing, causing the speaker contacts to bend back and forth everytime the phone is placed or removed from the holder. After a few months the contact gets worse and worse until one of both plates brake off. Because they are so tiny, it is impossible to repair the speaker - believe me, I have tried. I ended up buying a new speaker cell at eBay.
Cheers,
vma

And believe me, I repair devices for a living. Thanks for the run-through, although I could give you the same. It happened to you, doesn't mean it happens often or it is a fault in design. I could give you a list of design faults in quite a few models of expensive cellphones on the market today, the mentioned speakers are not one of them.
I appreciate, the help people! any more inputs? I am happy that all the previous posts were, about how to inspect the device upfront and some other useful tips what to check other inputs will be highly appreciated
Battery can be also considered. Some are sold with good batery some with dead battery. It is not so expensive, but costs something. In general if battery shows less than 50% and devidce still works (even under load) that is a good sign.
Also as for the touch screen - the best test is to open note taker and try to paint something. The painted line must exactly follow the stylus movement if it jumps somewhere, then the touch sensitive layer is bad. I bouht such UNI on eBay (was described as perfect working order), had to replace the digitizer myself.
I do prefer buying not working UNI's on Ebay with good display. Once I bought not booting one - mtty job fixed that. Other time I bouht one where the display was still off - the flex cable popped out from connector. Etc....
Thanks for all the advice people! now, please welcome me to the HTC universal family, (well actually, I have a Dopod 900 but what the heck all are the same right?) your inputs had been essential, for me to get my new baby without any hitches I hope that nothing manifests after the one week assurance the seller gave me

Now I have my own device so I will be flashing away, I hope without any problems. Again my thanks to the community hopefully there are more inputs for others who are thinking of buying their 2nd hand universal via meet ups
Excellent news! Congratulations!!! And welcome to the Uni family, of course. As you can see, we are one friendly bunch, all help and support will always be available. Have fun
Damn, I was hoping to do a very good Marlon Brando Godfather impersonation with 'Welcome to the family'
LOL

No, sweetie, the right direction would be an Orb3000 impersonation and 'Welcome to the forums', but I was worried, being Orb2000, hehe, that I simply won't be able to compete with a more updated version
