What are you going to do when a update comes out? - myTouch 3G, Magic General

To all you Cynogen users, I was wondering what you are going to do once new updates come out and Cynogen will no longer get updated? I am using Cynogen and considering switching to either a new rom or to stock because Cynogen will no longer be updating.

i belive the unlockr has an article about this, he says that google didnt have a problem with the roms, they only cared about the google apps that come with it, so as long as cyanogen takes out the google apps form his roms it'll be fine, so from now on when you load a cyanogen rom you will then later have to add the google apps, like maps, market, blah blah blah

the Google devs are working with Cyanogen and he said in his last blog he's got a surprise for us this weekend. I'm sure the updates will still go on and he will provide an easy way to carry over our Google apps to the updated ROMs.

Google updating apps in market

I noticed some of my Google apps had pending market updates.
Listen
Places Directory
Google Sky Map (New features include moving to SDCard for 2.2 users)
Hopefully this is a sign that Froyo is inching closer towards an official OTA release.
check a few of the android news sites and you'll find that the Korean n1 launch has been pushed back until "mid July" in order to be able to ship with 2.2 I/o 2.1
Looks like we got a bit to wait still in our "we will be pushing out 2.2 starting in the next coupe of weeks" BS.

They didn't say "couple weeks". . .they were more vague with "coming weeks."
Take as long as you want Google
If people really want Froyo faster they should manually update instead of whining.

I agree. Just wait. Seriously.
And google CAN take as long as they need because I'm holding the best phone I've ever had right now. Kudos
Without rooting, I cannot manually flash the test (FRF50) build, thus my craving for FroYo.

I'm not sure the release of that phone is tied to our release of 2.2. They would need to have the final build done ahead of that phone's release to preload the OS, right?

You're most likely completely wrong. I'm sure he's already searched for ways to do that.
Hint: He probably doesn't have the T-Mobile version...
I'd prefer to wait a bit longer for the dev team to iron out all the bugs and errors before pushing out the official release. Well yeah Froyo is a nice improvement, but it's not like day and night differences to me so far I'm still comfortable with 2.1.
You can flash the update just fine. Only thing not working is aac playback in the music player as far as i know, other than that it's dandy.
The update is signed with the correct keys so no need for root.

Market Issues 2.3.1 - Get your act together Google!

Well first, the new Market isn't on our Nexus S yet (officially), that's fine, it's just a UI update pretty much.
Now more seriously and more annoying, Google pushed out 2.3.1, that's great! BUT:
Whether you're rooted or not, there are missing apps on the Market because of 2.3.1
Some of the apps I use that I can no longer download from the Market are:
aFile, Fandango Movies, NYTimes for Android, PayPal, FiOS Mobile Remote
These are big apps, no reason they shouldn't be available.
I guess the issue is Google needs to input/enter/update their Market to "support" the new build of 2.3.1. ARE YOU F'ING SERIOUS? You just pushed the damn thing and don't remember to update your Market with the new build??
GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER GOOGLE! This is frustrating!
EDIT: ALL Copy Protected Apps do NOT show up in the Market on Android 2.3.1
Please go here and STAR the issue: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=13514
EDIT: 1/5/2011-IT'S FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
+1 i can confirm this

Have you tried editing your build.prop file to change the version fingerprint? I know this has been used in the past to restore "missing" apps to the market.
CALM DOWN
relax there, hot shot. you bought a pure android phone, early. You realize what that means is there will be glitches, patches, and rebuilds along the way. its happened before. the nexus one started off crappy with great potential and look at it now..its still top dog. so please be a professional with your purchase and know how to be a geek about it.

LOL I know, I've had a Nexus One. But still, really, this is a really stupid "mistake" by them, how can you overlook something like this? Shouldn't they have some sort of checklist they need to do before pushing an update to hundreds/thousands of phones?

Oh, I agree. Just trying to be helpful while we wait for Google to fix it lol. I've had to download the specific APKs and install them via AndExplorer for my missing apps.

Well, I disagree with your assessment in terms of the Market.
It's ridiculous that Google's flagship device with it's flagship version of the OS, sold to the masses through a big-box store like Best Buy should have something as basic as the build number not being recognized and excluding you from apps that should be available to you.
Such a small thing to take care of on their server end, yet overlooked. Just another one of those little things that a certain other mobile OS operator doesn't overlook that makes the rabid fanbois of it froth at the mouth and pant how much better their OS is.
Fed Up but glad others are in the same boat
I am glad that i came across your posts. I was about to throw the stupid phone out the window. I had to exchange my Nexus S today at Best Buy (still running 2.3). When i came out with my new phone, it prompted me to update to 2.3.1. I did the update and after I was done setting up my phone, I noticed that there are apps THAT I PAID FOR that are missing from the Market.
I am sorry, but whether this is a new phone, developer phone, I paid top dollar and I would expect that something as simple as ensuring that the apps that i PAID for our available seems pretty straightforward.
Until they straighten their stuff out, I am pulling my SIM and going back to MT4G.
Everyone calm down, they will show up in the coming days. The day that the Nexus S came out I couldn't find some apps, like NYT. But it showed up the next day or two.
Not too sure why people are complaining here. You bought a google development phone so you get updates long before other phones get them. Along with that, come issue, bugs, ...time waiting for 'others' to catch up.
By 'others' I mean, the people, companies, ect who release their apps. Surely google doesn't micromanage what apps work for what versions of Android. Or which ones show up on the market depending on your Android build, phone, or cell phone provider. My guess would be that is all in the app developers hands.
Either wait, or go about getting them on your phone another way. After all, you bought a google development phone, a pre-requisite for owning one should be wanting to tinker around with it. As said, you could probably get them to show up if you edit your prop-build. This happens at every new android build release....
confirmed...on 2.3.1 i lose slingplayer, thats a deal breaker for me. back to 2.3 for now

You didn't lose it, just get the .apk and install it manually.
Titanium Backup is really handy to have. You'll always have backups to all your apps for occasions like this.
I come here to get info on what's going on in the nexus world and all I find is stupid people *****ing about things they know nothing about.
Just because you paid some money does not mean you can act like a ignorant fool and *****.

Well you know what? Go ahead and update to 2.3.1 and you will have issues downloading apps from the Market, that was previously there. That's the point of this thread, and it's a valid one.
Yes you can go ahead and edit your build.prop, revert your rom, etc..etc.. but the FACT of the matter is, 2.3.1 DOES have Market issues.
I do have a right to ***** about this issue, because it's a simple issue for Google to fix and too stupid for them to overlook.
And for the other people saying "you bought a developer phone, you should expect issues and problems".. actually no, I don't expect that. It's sold to the general public through Best Buy at a retail location. I expect it to work properly. If suddenly tomorrow there's a 2.3.1 update and you can't make any phone calls, I can bet you all will be *****ing about it. And this Market issue is exactly the same.
I changed the fingerprint in the build.prop to show as it is the older 2.3.
I don't understand why Google is releasing an update before it allows it fully in the Market....
Attached is the build.prop i used.
It is from GRH78 only have the fingerprint of GRH55.
The ONLY line i changed in this build.prop is:
Code:
ro.build.fingerprint=google/soju/crespo:2.3/GRH55/79397:user/release-keys
The GRH78 fingerprint is:
Code:
ro.build.fingerprint=google/soju/crespo:2.3.1/GRH78/85442:user/release-keys
You cash push the attached build.prop into /system (make sure you keep the correct permissions), reboot the device and the market should be fine.
Once Google update the market you can change it back.
Also if you change your build.prop down to 2.3 you'll get notifications on a 2.3.1 firmware update <facepalm>
Just change the fingerprint in your build.prop, download your apps, and change it back. Either that or wait for the app developers to update their apps, there's nothing wrong with the market.

Not able to find Google Talk in the market

A friend of mine got his first Android phone today and told him to download Google Talk and he was not able to find it. So I searched and had now luck either any one else or am I missing something?
Edit: He found it pre-installed.
Mm yeah I was about to say that Google talk is one of the apps the still comes with the phone, just like YouTube just to come hopefully they start updating it tho

Yeah, we know. Not there either. Miztaken1312 was kind enough to post the .apk files in the Captivate forum. I assume they're the same for most devices. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773272

Has anyone tried the /e/OS?

Not sure if I should post here or the custom ROM page ( I figured that was more a development/issue forum ).
Anyway, today I see that /e/ has a release for the 6T. If I am reading it correctly it is basically LineageOS with microG......give or take, with it's own app store. Seems to me it would be more convenient to install 1 ready made pkg than intalling Lineage then installing micro G.
Has anyone installed it and what are your thoughts?
I am currently on the fence. I have rooted my phone and with Titanium and App Ops put Google, and most of the apps on a short leash. I love the way my phone is set up now EXCEPT google still lives inside it( without my google account info ).
Thanks for your thoughts!

ok, sounds like a pissy developer, but.......
ok, they haven't done anything new......except bundle it with micro G....kinda my goal. Not sure I will like their UI, but the lineage launcher is easy enough to reinstall.
3rd party apps.....absolutely no proof what so ever about the malware claim......rooted with Titanium can remove all the apps before the phone ever connects to the internet.
they haven't removed all the google stuff.........ONE, count it ONE, line of code using 8.8.8.8 as a fall back, not primary dns......I use a vpn all the time.
they steal code.....pretty much
they don't like negative feedback........no way, a prima dona developer?? Noooooooooooooooooo
Taking all of that in stride, Lineage plus micro G has not released an official version. What are my options with micro G? I thought by now there would be an official build since Lineage OS release their officail 6t build a few weeks back. I did look at your OS link, but not much info there.
Thanks! JC
Yes. They steal code, they make profit, and most importantly don't do anything new. Oh, also, google is still spying on you with /e/

ok, so what rom with micro g, no Gapps do you suggest?
The only google spying the other guy mentions is 1 line of code where google dns is the fall back dns. I use a vpn so that is a non issue.
The micro g guys have not realeased an official Lineage w Micro G, /e/ has. I can't seem to find anything with micro G for a 6T.
Thanks in advance.

I tried it but didn't satisfied to me so I went back to oos 9.0.17.
I understand this rom is for privacy but I can't use anything and many apps crash constantly after installed them.
I used it for a night, I believe be enough.
Maybe in future there will be a lot of things useful but at the moment.... No no and no
Thanks

Thank you for some real world input! Looks like I am going to stay with OOS. I downloaded the Pixel 3 camera apk today, the OxyTweaker Magisk module the other day, and, with Titatanium and App ops I have google on as short of a leash as I can with a factory ROM. I really like the way my phone is set up now. My battery is f**king AMAZING now and I have the best camera on the market. Until I am ready to 100% get rid of google I guess I will stay where I am.
Thanks again for actually replying to the question posed!

Googless ROM

Ive tried searching, but cannot find if there is a ROM for the S5 that blocks all google back ground services from reporting on you, whatever info it may be. Ive seen the rumor of the company selling their refurb phones with a custom ROM on it, but at ludicrous prices, and cant even find them at all. Im going to be getting an S5 from a friend soon and want to start stripping it of the fluff and google services if at all possible.
I don't know of any custom ROMs that include Google services by default. Just don't install GApps.
OK, thanks.

Pardon the stupid questions, im a Windows user and having to investigate the possibility of being forced to move if they dont fix Cortana's voice command (she only does searches when you give her a command) and Interests have been turned off for a while with no warning or reason, but there is a message on a 8.1 phone as to why.
Anywho, how do you load apps if you dont have Gapps/google services? Can you side load them, but where do you get up to date ones if not from the Play store? Is it worth using a free S5 or plunking for a One Plus 6T or 7 or Nokia 8?

I use S5 devices. Cheap and operate great.
