Ok... so I have heard that IM counts as a text message but to me that doesn't make sense because that is internet and part of the data package. With IM clients on my tilt it just went thru the internet and never charged me as a text message. Does anyone know how that will work?
Yeah the only bad thing about this phone so far is the messaging and data.....weird to pay so much when ive only been paying 20 for data since 04

exactly... and if you look we are basically paying for the $20 internet + the $4.99 for 400 text. So I guess it's fair if you get text but for someone like me that get's about 2 text messages a month I don't care about the 400 text.... just give me internet.

What everyone here and at tmonews have been saying is this:
Your shared voice plan won't change unless you choose to. When you add the G1, you add a G1 data plan...regardless. You'd add the lower-priced plan of the two available to yours and when you go over on SMS, it'll draw from your shared pool you already have. So your bill will probably go up an extra $25/month.
GoogleTalk does work as part of the data package, so it's 'unlimited'; the others will cost you a text message for each IM sent and received. I'm hoping MS will slap Google by launching a data based IM client. Until the G1, I didn't know Google had a chat client. I looked up a review on CNET that referred to it as the 'cheap motel room of chat software'. It's definitely basic, which doesn't really matter -- but -- no one uses it.
FYI -- GoogleTalk is somewhat integrated with AIM, however, on the G1 you won't be able to add AIM chat buddies to GoogleTalk -- you have to chat with them via the AIM buddy list, and pay (or use one of your 400 texts) to chat with them.
If you do a lot of non-GoogleTalk IM-ing, you're better off with the unlimted data/messaging plan.

When i spoke to the G1 representatives (i spoke with 3 different ones) they said that the $25 plan has a certain function that the $20 plan doesnt this function is suppose to register your device to google with a gmail account. one of the reps clam it has to register through the 3G network, not the edge or gprs; and the 3G is available in the $25 and $35 plan.
but what i theorize is, if its possible to change android to wm then you can switch back to the $20 plan. otherwise, according to the 3 reps, tmobile is trying to create a plan just for the G1 for data and they said it would be priced around $20.
But if you did that, it would defeat the purpose of getting a G1 in the first place. You'd have a cheaper data plan, but you'd have an OS that couldn't use all the hardware the phone has to its best abilities.
Something you'll also be getting along with your new G1: a new SIM card. It's required to access 3G service, and once initialized, will replace your exisiting one.
There's no 'function of the 3G' plan that relates to Gmail, however, it is a function of the G1 device -- you won't be able to initialize and use it when you first power it on without a Gmail address (or a hosted Google Apps login). 3G will work Gmail-free with any compatible device, if you have the $25/$35 service; Gmail is required only if you have a G1.

that's another thing I wanted to know... and is the new sim special (more storage or different format) in any way or is it just a set of S/Ns that get 3G? What happens to people that aren't in a 3G area? How do I sync my old contacts to my google account?

to prepare for getting this device i connected my device to nuevasync and got all my calendars, contacts, etc synced with my google services. now when I get the device all i will need to do is enter in my gmail account info and all my old contacts/calendars will be there.
Getting the $20 data only plan is gonna be easy. I've done stuff like this allot with my MDA. If some feature i want isn't automatically avaible for my phone, i either temperaily slip my sim card into another phone and log back into my.t-mobile.com to switch features, or just click the "This isn't my phone" link at the top of the page and tell them it's really something else. Once the features are changed the way i like them, switch back to my real phone and the features stick the way i wanted them.
I really doubt the data with the $25 is any different then the $20 plan. Verizon did the same thing with smartphones requiring an unlimited data plan cause they didn't want people complaining the phone didn't work or getting huge data bills cause they used the internet without a plan. (i know t-mobile doesn't work that way, but...)

I'd like some confirmation about this one. It's something no one else is talking about. I know the manual talks about a new SIM, but most T-Mobile phones ship with new SIM cards if you're a new customer. Others, if you buy in the store, they keep the SIM card that comes with the phone. Same goes for re-upping with a new phone online. They take the SIM out before shipment.

To echo what everyone else said already... (I need to tell SOMEONE to keep from going crazy!)... T-mobiles Internet rates are the SAME as they have been for 10 years.... $20 a month. It is just with the G1 they are making you buy 400 texts or unlimited text and bundling it in. Sure ATT is $30 a month. Then you have to ADD another $15 for texts.
T-mobile still rocks everyone else.
This plan is not to bad but I do need to get the unlimited texting...

Amen to that! Unless you were grandfathered in on some special rate plan, this new plan is exactly the same rates as you would be paying- so why is everyone so pi$$ed?! Still cheaper than anything else, and faster now.

WAIT! luckily
G1 data service can be used with other phone used as modem, or data card
you can even add VPN tag with it (will use internet3 APN)
have a regular 3G phone or data card ready if you have laptop
400 Text Messages.. Tethering
I Just think T-Mobile forgot the consider the customers who have family plan. Most people who have family plan do end up getting the unlimited Messaging plan.
So that 400 text messages are basically waste. or thats a way they are trying to extra money...
T-Mobile puts alot of effort into Customer Service. So i am sure they will fix that ust like they changed the 1Gb Cap for 3G
But for Tethering.. Just give it some time maybe a month or so.. I will assure someone will definetly create a app to make the phone work as a modem. Even they announced that in the conference...
hey i have put windows mobile 6.5 v10 of nsfn i can no longer receive picture messages, i know the bell htc vogue was never capable of sending/reciving but it would send you a text with a link to a site that stored the picture/video/sound file to download on to the phone. And also, does anyone know a decent free alternative to the msn messenger that comes with the phone as bell charges 8 bucks a month to use it, i would like to drop it but cant stay on an online one like e buddy all the time,
thanks
bell does not charge me $8 for msn ussage, i do haver spend $10 for unlimmited data, get that instead. Try palringo or fring as alternatives
hey i have the fun bundle 20, the 10 dollar thing is over but for 20 bucks i get unlimited data, i was told by bell i need to have this on or ill get charged per use fees
don't worry 90% of BELL reps are retarded!!!!

are you talking about the "unlimited mobile internet" plan or unlimited Data? I got the fun 15 package (wich includes unlimited mobile internet) and so far, I haven't been charged for data while using "Internet apps" like weather, Garmin's options or web browsing. Havn't tried the MSN yet but I don't think i'd be charged neither
Probably the best plan you can get!

If you are getting charged for things like weather and garmin, you must be using Bell services... because data is data.. unless your using their proprietary software. You shouldn't be getting charged for any data browsing the web especially.. either you misunderstand your plan, or Bell is screwing you.. Id look into that

I had a Bell rep in the store tell me that the Touch wasn’t a “true” Windows Mobile device and that is why I was able to get the $7/month unlimited mobile browser on it. But that it was not a “data device” and was a “browser only” device.
When I rebooted it showed him the “Windows Mobile” splash screen he got all hostile with me and said “look, your not going to believe me anyway so there is no sense in me trying to explain it to you”. I guess I am just too stupid to realize that I don’t have a “real” Windows Mobile device (even though I write Windows Mobile applications for a living). If it weren’t so amusing I might have been offended by his treatment of me.
The Fish
Is there any messenger programs out there that would use text, instead of a dataplan?
I don't have, nor do I want to pay for a data plan, however there are sometimes when I need to ask someone something, or someone needs to ask me something that would just be a quick IM
well ive tried most and u have the default Messenger that comes on the phones (well the tilt version) called OZ Instant Messaging which works for Aim,Msn but u need to beable to connect to media net is the problem. It wont count as data and eat up KB's, only counts as sms's, but it needs to be able to connect.
Another 1 was called Smart Touch its a full on Txt service for many things(weather mail googlesearch etc) which doesnt ever connect to Media net. Its a bit buggy imo. It only has Aim that i know of also. can always try it out
Thats all ive found sadly ive been searching cause stayin on Media net for an IM eats battery (i have unlimited data plan so thats not an issue).
otherwise other then Buddylists u can use Aim easily if u setup for it to send to ur phone when people write u and ur offline which u can reply to and all (i dont remember if that number is finite and if u can always use same 1)
And for MSN u can have them add ur phone number as a Person and write u. Then save that Number u received for that person's msg and u can always write them through that number.
Just noticed this today for some reason. If I try to send an MMS to someone and I have their phone number stored as 1-234-567-8901 it will not go through, I get a permanent failure message. If I have their number stored as 1234567890, it goes through without any problems at all. Haven't seen this posted anywhere, thought it might help someone out.
Well I can't MMS messages at all. It has to do with the picture/video settings. The better the quality, the more memory it takes up and even a 10 second video clip on the highest resolution is over the sending limit.
There are specific MMS settings for picture/video and the quality looks like crap, or a phone with a 2mp camera.
I am starting to see just how horrible these android phones are. But as a formal windows mobile/iphone user, there are some things android does far better.
lettin the hussy role on my MT3G Slide
Of course the quality is crap. MMS are usually limited to 300 kB on every carrier and every phone. Don't blame Android for the same limitations that are in every Windows Mobile and iPhone. If you want to send higher quality pictures or videos to someone., send them as an email attachment.
I have had to enter the phone number without the 1 at the begining also. Sometimes it's the limitations of the network, but there is also an issue in the stock rom that glitches the message and returns it as an unable to send. I do not have the same problem on CM6 though.

You must not know about the 1mb maximum on most other phones (w/o having to use 3rd party apps) so yes it is an android problem.
Also most other phones don't have crappy mms quality or at least phones made past 2006. It is pathetic to see such a great quality picture/video and then not be able to send it threw mms and even email (sometimes). Then when you see just how garbage the mms settings are, that makes it twice as bad.

I grabbed the 300 kB from the MMS wikipedia page. I knew that Android defaulted to 1 mb limit for MMS. I didn't know others did though. I know that if I try and send a message to my gfs phone. It can not be over 1/2 mb, and my dads previous phone it was over 300 kB. I have never had any problem emailing a picture or video to someone. Do you have email attachment problems on your phone?
The phone itself can send a 1Mb or larger file but the carrier limits the size. It has to do with a file or something that gets checked on their servers everytime you send an MMS, if the carrier doesn't 'support' your phone it defaults to a unversal low quality message. It's a bit retarded that I get tmobiles current flagship phone, or what ever you want to call it, and they don't even seem to support it on their servers. My Blackberry 8900 could send and receive MMS messages larger than 1Mb but they limit this phone to 300kb when sending and on a good day, 50kb when receiving.
This is just great... I convince my wife that we need to switch to T-mobile... Get unlimited data plans and android phones. I get the vibrant, she gets the mt3gs... This phone is highly frustrating for her... What a piece of crap. This MMS issue is the icing on the cake
The update was suppose to fix the wifi mms issue. It did for a bit but it has come back. I think it's tmo and their data connection. I just turn off wifi and download the pic and turn it back on. No biggie.

Hi everyone, just a quick word of warning, I realise this is already out there in many quarters albeit its usually referring to the android platform but this auto conversion affects WP as well.
Typically now I no longer have a WP7 device I cant go back and check but I could have sworn there was a "tweak" for WP7 that could enable/disable "send multipart SMS messages as MMS"?
don't know if anyone else can remember that or not?
anyhow, if you try and send 460 characters or more it will become a MMS, it does flag it up on the screen but its easily overlooked and of course you will be very likely to have additional charges apply if you do use it.
Its a bit annoying if im honest, I rarely do it but I feel this is defo one of those options we should have so with a bit of luck we will find a reg entry that will sort this out
The concept that anybody still charges *more* for MMS than they do for SMS shocks and appalls me even more than the concept that anybody still charges for SMS (they are literally free to the operator; they piggyback on data packets that would be sent anyhow). In any case, if your operator charges more for one MMS than they do for 5 SMS (that's the threshold for conversion; it's configurable in the registry if you have an interop-unlock) then something is *really* weird. MMS is a special-case SMS plus a tiny bit of data usage.
