Hi!
My Hero gets very laggy sometimes when I open up too much apps. Unfortunately there is no way (that I know of) to actually close an app, they just 'hibernate' in the background. I tried using TasKiller but it seems to have issues with the hero (when I try to kill apps it brings a random app forward and doesnt close it).
They best solution is just to reboot the phone. When it boots back up it works like a charm.
I thought it would be useful to have a tool that reboots the phone automatically every day at a given time (lets say 4AM) but I couldnt find any. Do You have any other solution for that problem?
I've been using Taskiller (unpaid) since I got my Hero and it's working fine.
Clicking on a task kills it, long clicking brings up the ignore/kill menu. The unpaid version allows for 2 ignores.
When I put a 'shortcut' to task killer on one of the screens it did bring up my contact list after pressing it.
But if I select task killer from the full list of installed apps it works fine, shows me a long list of whats running, you can kill them individual or hit the button at the top to kill them all.
I've been facing the same lagginess on my device, but it seems to go away after awhile. No idea why. Perhaps the system is configured to clean up every now and then?
Taskkiller seems to shut down the SenseUI, so I've stopped using it in the meantime.
What really annoys me, however, is how sometimes the SenseUI seems to crash, and all you see on the screen is the notification bar area, and the HTC logo, as though the phone was switching scenes or rebooting.

Taskiller works best if you choose individually which apps to close. You need to leave Touch Input and TouchFlo alone if you still want things to work properly!
Generally it's pretty obvious which apps you want to close e.g. Browser, GMail, Games, GMaps, etc.
Oh and I believe Android will auto-close apps when it decides the system is running low on resources (presumably RAM). That may explain why things suddenly speed up.
Going through app by app isn't something I'd like to spend my day doing. TK has been useful for me on my HTC Magic and Dream (yeah, I'm a bit of an Android man), but on Hero, I haven't really found it as useful
there a program "advanced taskkiller" at the android marketplace. you can kill all tasks at once and then get back to the sense ui by pressing the home button.. found it a good solution for me to free up some memory pretty fast

Is the app for free? I can't find it.
Unfortunately we cannot see paid apps in Poland.
Yes, it is a paid app. I had the same problem as well, but thank goodness my G1 came with an AT&T prepaid SIM card. Although the SIM card doesn't work, it is enough to identify me as a US customer when I access Market over WiFi, thus giving me access to paid apps.
It might be worthwhile for you to check if you can get your hands on a depleted AT&T SIM card on eBay or something
Has anyone tried
"Advance Task Manager" i had it on both my G1 and HTC Magic with the Hero Rom installed and it worked just fine for me.
yes, i am using it myself and it works fine.
is a free app, or at least the version i have is.
it remembers which apps you selected to shut down, so each time you go in, they are ticked already and you just have to hit the kill button.
the first time you use it, untick the ones you want to leave running and then it's good to go.

Using which one?
Advanced Task Manager is really great with the exceptions and widgets it is they best task killer out there IMO.
I got rid of the HTC TouchFLO/SenseUI and killed all of the HTC processes on my Hero. I also uninstalled Locale (very sad to do that because its very useful).
I run this configuration for two days now and I have no lag at all!
All you really loose are the HTC widgets which I didnt utilize anyways.
I just got an 8GB microsdhc Class 6 card and installed advanced task killer to get rid of the apps that were running in the background and now Henry (that's what I lovingly called my Hero) runs really quickly and with no lag at all.
Love it!
How do you identify the class of the SD card? I've got one but haven't a clue what it is?

I also have a class 6 sd card.
How in the world could it help the lag (assuming you didnt root the phone and make a swapfile on the sd card)? Pls explain

If there is a little "6" on the card then you know that it's a class 6. Like this:
http://media.photobucket.com/image/class 6 micro sdhc/ddddadi/microSDHC4GB_a.jpg
If there is no number on the card it is most probably a "Class 2" card. Class 6 cards are more expensive, but have higher data transfer rates.

Well, seeing that a lot of the files that you access while using applications are stored on the card (photos, music etc) it does make sense. And perhaps the Hero uses the card as a swap space to store things on? I really don't know how or why it might be faster, but I have definitely noticed the difference. The phone hardly lags any more. When it does, it's literally just for half a second.
Before I often had the issue that while I was typing the phone just wouldn't keep up any more. I haven't experienced that since I have installed the new card.

It should be said that class 6 cards have higher *minimum* data transfer rates for writing. These are:
Class 2 - 2MB/s
Class 4 - 4MB/s
Class 6 - 6MB/s
Many cards exceed these speeds both reading and writing, and often by very large margins. For example, class 2 cards writing at 12MB/s etc (example http://www.davidgilson.co.uk/2008/12/follow-up-another-micro-sdhc-card/ )
It is also possible to buy class 2 cards that are actually faster than class 6 cards from other manufacturers.
The point is that when you buy a card, look for independent reviews that have actually measured the read/write speeds of the cards, and buy accordingly. Just looking at the class in isolation, only guarantees you a minimum level of performance.

Dave
i startwed the week offwith nealy 2 mb of memory.....now im down to 0.47..freed some to.86...i think theres gonna be a vido on here of a tytn being smashed with a 2lb lump hammer...im seriously pissed off with this i not loaded anything...there should be realy nothing on the phone......
someone...anyone...i dumped a load more stuff to the storage card but still say memeory critcal....how any one puts up with the things ill never no.....
i love this place...
Storage memory or RAM???
Any emails or SMS's you get should also be stored on the sd card. Also, use an explorer app to check your device, usually apps you have installed actually install to the device instead of sd card like you wanted, Tomtom was a good example of this. Just copy these problem apps to the sd card but don't forget to delete the old shortcut and make a new one so they still work.
Try to get rid of those ringtones sometimes supplied in the roms as these are a waste of space, especially if you are gonna use an MP3 as a ringtone.I did find, however, that you do need to have the message tones stored in windows directory on the device, just can't seem to find them on the sd card.
If its RAM, then there are apps using it. Try to get an app killer so it frees up some ram when you finish using them.
Just a few things you might like to check.
Cheers...

Well swearing in the OP is not a good way to get help, putting a lot of angry smilies in the OP isn't either.
Frankly, I am amazed you did got a response in this thread!
Please clean up your OP or I will delete the thread.
Hello, ive been having some issues with my MT3G over the past few days and ive noticed my phone has been lagging a lot even after rooting, installing latest cyanogen rom and using compcache. here is my setup:
mt3g 32b
cyanogenmod 4.2.11.1
Compcache default settings
lock home app in mem, otherwise i get reloads
i think the problem is that random apps keep turning on by themselves even after i kill them with advanced task manager. phone lags, i check task manager and apps like amazon mp3, market, messaging (i use handcent), locale (i now uninstalled it), settings and other random apps and i never launched any of these apps. so i kill all the apps, the phone runs fine and fast but about 1 min later other random apps load again and i have to rekill them. what gives? ive tried wiping and reinatalling to no avail... why does everyone else seem to have constantly fast mt3g's when i have essentially the same setup?
Seriously, no one?? Come on guys, at least someone has some advice?
have you tried changing your linux swap instead of compcache? Also, have you tried the ram hack?
I'm not sure why you have those things turning on again. I don't have that problem with my mt3g
double post
Thanks for the reply, I don't use linux swap (apps2sd?) considering the phones internal memory is quite a bit. I read about the ram hack but I use the phone for gaming quite a bit so I don't see how I would benefit from that. If linux swap really does make the difference then I guess I have no choice. The only thing that worries me is the sd card wearing down because of it although it doesn't seem to be much of an issue with G1 users or am I wrong?
linux swap is not apps2sd. it gives the phone more virtual memory that it feeds off the memory card to make up for the lack of ram over the 32A. ext is where the apps are stored for apps2sd, but the phone does not need that.
The ram hack only makes 3D gaming suffer. Games like ProjectINF, RoboDefense, Pacman, etc don't suffer from this. Even then, some 3D games still work fine for me, like Toon Warz.
And not the SD card doesn't really go bad, it has on some people, but even then, most sd card come with 5 year warranties. My transcend comes with a lifetime warranty, so you shouldn't worry about it.
Thank you, that cleared up a LOT of my confusion! I read somewhere that Amon_Ra's recovery image will setup linuxswap with one of its commands (partitioning?) or am I mistaken?
it partitions it into the 3 sections. fat32+ext+linux swap. This is what I did. However, this will give you the ext which will transfer all the apps to your sd. you can however, delete your ext if you don't want that using parted in adb. from there, you can use the swapper app and set it to your liking. I use 64mb and 40 swappiness.
Thanks for the help Tazz, linux swap made a difference. There's still a small lag sometimes but much less than before and less frequent. By the way, swapper seems to have been removed from the market for some reason.
This thread is for those of you who have already got the MR2 update and would like to report any bugs, features etc. This thread will make it easier to follow up and find any similarities. Also to find fixes faster then digging through different threads.
Please DO NOT post "Oh I haven't gotten this patch yet","WTF it's not up yet","Installing it now" etc...
Please post anything you have noticed or would like to share about MR2 here.
I have the Swedish version of MR2, these are my observations.
(1) I noticed as well that when the device is waking up, the SD Card takes a second or 2 to show up. I am sure this has to do with power management. Now this causes a slight delay when you wake up the device and can be annoying if you are like me and want "Instant response". I stated already in another thread that I had applied the "SD Card Fix" that was created for MR1. Now there is no delay and thats the way I like it, the power consumption difference is not noticeable, so I am not concerned at all that it might use 0.0..something milliamps more power. Take note, that I did not suffer memory card missing or sudden data loss problems. It just took a while for the card to pop up after start up.
(2) The GPS problem with TomTom remains, I still need GPS Gate in order to use TomTom.
FIXED! See here -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6494250&postcount=14
(3) The G Sensor problem remains, I cannot use any other apps apart from SE's that work with the G Sensor, very annoying!!!
This Java -> "Water Level" app works, so maybe some other ones might. But even that one is SE's. I will check more into it later.
(4) Visual LED notifications don't seem to turn on until you wake up the device, the audio alerts are instant though.
I will update as I find more, otherwise everything else(I have tested) on this device is faster now, including SMS typing via keyboard.
CAB for SD Card fix -> http://rapidshare.com/files/389695879/X2_SDFix.cab
EDIT:
Please note! I will no longer be working on trying to fix any bugs on the X2.
I'm sending it back and getting an X10 instead, so my efforts will shift over to Android now.
Perhaps down the road when they come up with a better OS or something, I will buy another X2. Until then, I hope others who have been helping out now will continue to do so.
Thanks for the clarification that the notification LED problem has still not been fixed. I'm afriad it might be time for me to say goodbye to my X2 as this was one of the reasons why I bought the device and if they still haven't fixed it now, it is unlikely they are ever going to.

I am sure there are more updates or fixes on the way.
Besides that, not many devices offer LED notification anyways.
Today was the first day my X2 has run superbly, I have not needed to install "Advanced Config Tool" or "SK Tools". No Stalls, no sluggish behaviour. Good battery life... I think it's on it's way to perfection. Now we only need HardSPL
im also dissapointed that theyve not bothered to fix the LED notifications. was one of the main reasons i stuck with SE. most SE phones have LED notification (which work), an immensly useful but simple feature. it worked fine on the X1. seems to be another casualty of their over zealous power management. the phone doesnt wake up when a text is received like the X1 used to. im sure someone clever can get the X2 behave as it should do either, their must be something in the registry that can be modified like the SD card fix..
^^ Yep, I am sure we can tweak this bad boy somehow...
But meanwhile.
To enable "Auto rotation"
Edit the following Registry Key. YOU WILL NEED A REGISTRY EDITOR! If you don't know what it is, don't bother with this! Just move along...
HKLM\Services\MultiService\mods\Rotation\AccelBasedRotationEnabled
Change value to "1"
This will help with many things including this -> TomTom!
To enable TomTom Rotation, go further down to AADRClients
(1) Add "New Key" Call it TomTom or whatever.
(2) In that key add new "String Value"
(3) Value name "ModuleFileName"
Value Data "\Storage Card\Program\Navigator\TomTom Navigator.exe"
(You will need to check your folders are the same, edit the text accordingly)
(4) Make sure it saved.
(5) Reboot device
(6) Start TomTom when it's loaded rotate your device left, viola!

after the install of MR2 all the data on my mammory card got corrupted. Not right away but couple of hours later. I have Generik_UK. Then i formated the card. installed the SDfix (its on this forum somewhere -> search) but i think its not everithing as it should be. the data did not get corrupred again but the micro SD sometimes is not visible in the file manager.
I also had some problems with total freezing of the phone (two times in 2 days time). that only happened when i was doing heavy usage on the camera and the picture viewing I guess the RAM got full ar something. then i deleted all the panells and the panelmanager to save some RAM. Ill let you know if it helps.

Yep, I guess I should have mentioned that
instead of hardSPL to flash custom roms has anyone tried to hack the sony update program?? if it could be fooled into thinking the custom firmware is the latest firmware then get it to install it onto the phone...
For those of you not in the KNOW.
TomTom will work without installing GPSGate.
On the X2 – go to Settings/System/External GPS and change GDP9 TO COM8.
Run FASTGPS and download the latest Sat Data.
Open TomTom and change the GPS Device from Built in GPS receiver to Other NMEA GPS receiver and select COM8.
Wait a few secons for the Receiver to kick in and away you go.....
ok,can some one to test video mode, record some video and see what is the frame rate in new MR2,is it still low? or is it better then 15fps

I guess you look for Storage Card in File Explorer? What I have seen is that because of the card delay mentioned earlier the card appears at the bottom of the folders/files list and not among the folders in alphabetic order, at least on my device. Can be worth a look even though you applied the card fix and i haven't.
Two flaws:
1.
Auto lock on, display blacked out
Listening to music via slideview
Phone rings (technically speaking)
The phone vibrates and perhaps play half ringtone or just not at all.
Without the music listening the phone rings as it should, using generic ringtone so far so no storage card error here I suppose.
2.
Listening to music via slideview. Songs stored at Storage card.
Media player plays one, two, three songs and halts in the middle of a song.
Going to try a different media player to see what happens. I have not installed any yet because my favourite player, Pocket Player appears to have some compatibility issues with winmo 6.5. I know of the memcard fix and will eventually try that as well.
Was thinking of a new thread, quite the opposite of this. A "what programs works on X2 MR2". haven't installed that much yet, perhaps someone else can start
SE contact reading chinese?
Can anyone confirm if the SE contacts (not the WinMo) in MR2 can read Chinese (after installing either new fonts or localization)?
Thanks!
so i changed from GENERIC_SG to GENERIC_UK, rather time consuming but worth it IMO, but down to the nitty gritty details.
I'm still in the process of personalising it (adding my ring tones, loading old sms's etc) but from first few things i've done the speed between screens is quite phenominal
Also by accident i just found that you can move icons around ALOT easier, . BIG bonus as it doesn't mean i have to scroll all the way to the botom to find my new apps. - to do this just press down on the icon (using stylus or finger) and move it to were ever you want it.
more feedback to follow
I think this thread lost its and the thread starters intentions long ago. Its sad since it could have been a great resource. Some moderation would be apritiated.
Thanks, A.D
I'm using wm6.5 which was already on device when I bought it.
The problem started few weeks ago.
After addind a new contact or editing existing one, after pressing button DONE, an annoying lagg for few minutes comes.
Waiting few minues or rebooting the device helps, however, lagg should not even happen.
So my question here is...where does lagging come from?
Is it possible that integrated memory is somehow damaged and it has bad sectors which effects data saving?
It's probably the winmo6.5
Have you tried any other OS on it?
Sent from my HD2 using XDA app
I didn't try any other OS.
I have device for arround 18 months now...for first 16 months I can't say I've noticed that error...but few weeks ago after I was replacing old contacts photos with new I noticed that...now always when I add someone new or just edit phone number for example...I get this extreme lagg...
It is not a big deal if you don't add or edit contact often...which I don't...but however when I do it is annoying that I can't use phone with normal speed for maybe 20min if I don't reboot it...
I've also checked proceses which are running in the background but nothing seems to use more ram as usually.

Do this and see if it helps, open file Manager and go to Windows/Opera/Profiles(I think?)/Downloads and clean that folder out. Also go and grab Clear Temp from Freeware Pocket PC, this app helps you delete all the temp files in you HD2. This helpd free up memory resouces wich is usually the reason for laggs and slugish behavior. when you first run the app look at the number of files it dellets and you will be amazed. If you already have this and know about the hidden downloads folder in Opera then disregaurd that part of my post. If neither of these things help you I advize a hard reset.
Thanks for that.
I've been collecting this temp stuff for 18 months, must be a lot of it...I'll try to delete it.
