Exchange 2007 sync issues - Hero, G2 Touch General

Hi,
I'm having some sync issues with my work Exchange server (which is out of my control).
More specifically, I am getting to the screen with checkboxes for Mail, Contacts and Calendar. When I click 'Finish setup' a dialog box is displayed with 'Processing' and then after some seconds 'Failed to create the account. Please try again later'.
When looking into the error log I can see the following lines (among a lot of I suppose standard output):
PHP:
09-16 23:41:13.161 W/System.err( 863): com.htc.android.mail.eassvc.core.SyncException: Forbidden

09-16 23:41:13.171 W/System.err( 863): at com.htc.android.mail.easclient.SynchronizationSetting$VerifyAccountThread.run(SynchronizationSetting.java:535)
Anyone see immediately what's wrong? The password and account settings appear to be okay, as I've tried messing with them on the previous screen, and this gives the proper error message.
What I would like to try next is to get the root CA installed on the phone, but I don't know how.
Extra info:
-Our Exchange server is 2007, latest rollup. We'll be switching soon to 2010.
-It has pin enforcement policy.
-Touchdown and Moxier works fine (I've bought Moxier, demoed Touchdown) however they do not provide syncing of contacts two-way, and I'd rather use the "native" client.

I think your problem is probably due to the PIN enforcement. I read somewhere that HTC's implementation of Activesync doesn't support it (as they've offered no way of entering a PIN number). Due to this, setup will fail.
I haven't any personal experience of this, but I read it on another website.

Yes, this is most likely the reason. You will need to exclude yourself from the policy on the server.

Still struggeling with this one. I'll post some updates once we move to Exchange 2010 (end of this week). I'll also push on HTC to fix this...

Two notes of interests:
1) The move to Exchange 2010 was not noticed in any way on the Hero. This was somewhat expected. Moxier is still working fine with some brief (but notified) sync failures parts of the day. Suspect this is due to entering or leaving a wifi-zone mid-syncing.
2) HTC finally responded to my question if they were going to fix the PIN-code enforcement issue. Basically it is "we would like to, but not right now". Pete the Techie managed to sneak in a jab at their competence as well . I really hope they will fit a fix into the 1.6 release (pleasepleaseplease!).
New Response From [ Pete (Europe Support (Tech)) ]
Thanks for your email.
At this time, the application does not support servers that enforce a PIN.
I am sure this will be fixed at some point, but we have no date on this at this time. in the meantime, your only way round it is a third party application from the market such as Touchdown or Roadsync will allow you to sync with servers that enforce PINs. (they have obvioulsy figured out how to get around it while we have not yet.)

I can tell you that it works fine with Exchange 2007 if you can get yourself excluded from the PIN policy. Is there any chance you can do that or are your IT department too strict? (I'm head of IT, so have no problem excluding myself from policies, but I know it is not so straightforward for other people!)

Exclusion from that policy is hard to do I think, but I will at least ask. Thanks!

what policy are you guys talking about? exchange 2007 uses activesync... if it's exchange it's probably active directory, are you sure they just aren't allowing you to active sync? by default in exchange 2003 it was on for all users, in 2007 it is defaultly off. You manage the users permission through active directory exchange attributes.

We are talking about the policy that Exchange can be set up with to enforce the use of a pin code (numeric or alphanumeric) before allowing synchronization/access to the mobile device. The intent is that big companies might want to lock the device with 5,10,15,etc minutes interval in case you loose it or it gets stolen. This prevents access to intranet and internal e-mail for outsiders. Remote wipe is also a big part of this.
Read these if you want to know more:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb266973.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc540452.aspx

oh ... sounds good.
Yeah, since activesync is used for non-managed devices, Exchange admins usually don't care about PIN enforcement and central device management... if so, they'll throw you a blackberry! ha
I had posed the question as to if there were any apps developed to leverage exchange web services... which is a much more verbose web protocol for exchange resources than activesync.

I don't think we should have to pay for additional software for built in functionallity because HTC can't be arsed.

Agreed. Exchange support is fairly ubiquitous now, and one of the reasons I bought the Hero was because here (Norway) it was heavily advertised together with other business targeted phones such as the HTC Diamond 2, HD, Samsung Omnia, SE's X-whatever and so on.
I am really hoping Android 2.0 will appear on the Hero at some point soon. Hopefully HTC will recognize that they need this to continue selling the Hero, and just develop the update. Maybe they skipped 1.6 update because google told them 2.0 wasn't far away (an indication of this (I believe) is that the 1.6 Tattoo firmware is probably more or less completely compatible with the Hero with little effort from HTC, and the 1.6 firmware would be out now if they weren't working on 2.0). *crossing fingers*.

And it was confirmed

Does anyone with 2.1 tried to sync Exchange 2007?
I'm having a similar problema with HTC Desire with Android 2.1 update 1.

Yes, 2.1 works fine... Depends on if your eas admin requires configurable devices... I don't have experience with desires, they might not be considered configurable and if required on the exchange environment, you will never connect.

Push Email

Hi! I Would like to use push email service for my personal email account but i dont have an exchange server neither i can afford one...are there any free push email service providers or even paid would do, but i want real time push email, not the one which requires client to b installed on pocket pc..please help..i have wm5 on jasjar..
there are tons of posts about push email. your question is too vague to answer. please search and ask a more specific question. yes there are free push email services. i don't know what they are.
Try:
http://www.seven.com/products/consumers/index.html
i was a smartner duality customer for a while before seven bought them on both a wm2003se and a smartphone. then company stuck me with a blackberry and i used it for a while. when i got sick of it i tried to get the seven version of the smartner software they distribute. well, i am an exchange user with a large exchange installation and no IT support for one off configurations like mine. when i went through seven CS they were rather slow but knowledgeable, too knowledgeable it seemed they were asking for stuff i had no idea what it was. anyway the seven software couldn't access my global adress list. and the problem never was resolved. since then we found BB connect SW for WM5 and it works so i get to use my company BB pushmail account on my uni with email and calendar. i don't know if the seven consumer stuff works but the enterprise didn't for me. and customer service is slow to respond to single users (why all the email redirector comanies dissapeared, too much support for too little money).

*** Why are you discontinuing FREE ActiveSync? ***
Our free mail2web LIVE service with ActiveSync based on Microsoft
Exchange 2003 was a very popular service, and we're glad that we were
able to provide this for so many years. We have done our best to
maintain the service and the platform for as long as possible. However
we remain committed to offering the latest and greatest services to our
customers, and in order to do that the best way is to upgrade our
platform to Microsoft Exchange 2007. And unfortunately due to some
licensing changes that come along with Microsoft Exchange 2007, we're no
longer able to provide ActiveSync for free.
*** Will there still be a free service? ***
We are still committed to providing a free version of mail2web LIVE, and
as such will be launching our new mail2web LIVE Basic service which
includes a vastly improved Outlook Web Access. Also, the mail2web LIVE
Basic service will be completely ad-free!
*** Can I synchronize my mobile device with mail2web LIVE Basic? ***
No. Unfortunately the ActiveSync Service, BlackBerry Add-On and RoadSync
Add-On are not supported with the mail2web LIVE Basic service, and
therefore you will be unable to synchronize your mobile device. We
recommend that users who require this try our free 60-Day Trial of the
new mail2web LIVE service.
*** Why should I stay with mail2web.com? ***
We certainly hope you will! We appreciate that you've found the service
useful for as long as we've offered it. One of our primary commitments
is to serve our paying customers to the best of our ability, and we feel
that the free mail2web LIVE Basic service still offers value for those
users that need it. And for users who need ActiveSync, our hope is that
you find the monthly fee to be satisfactory along with all the service
improvements that come with Exchange 2007.
*** Why do I have to upgrade if I'm happy with my current service? ***
Unfortunately, due to a number of changes we are unable to maintain any
existing users on our Exchange 2003 platform. We apologize for any
inconvenience and hope that you will find value in our new Exchange 2007
based services.
*** I'm ready to go! What can I do to get started? ***
If you are choosing to migrate to our new mail2web LIVE services, you
will need to log into your control panel and confirm your upgrade. You
can do this by visiting the following web address and log in with your
email address and password.

Personally, I rely on mail2web to push my work e-mail to my phone, and have no intention of paying $5/mo (unless the company wants to pay for it). I'm sure I'm not the only one using it for this purpose and wanted to make sure those who do are aware of this impending change.
thanks for the headsup! i am actually surprised that i haven't received that email myself... or maybe i just haven't checked hmm...
anyway, i too use mail2web for pushing my gmail onto my wm phone and have been happy with it for a good while now; shame that they're introducing a fee but then again i suppose 5$ a mo isn't really too much and i have no issues with commiting to that if that's the only option i have...
unless someone knows a decent free exchange solution that i could use instead? any ideas?
Again I have not yet received the email.
If it's purely email you are looking for then try Seven Beta, they pick up gmail quite nicely as well as the majority of other email accounts.
Think I may have to sign up to the basic package as i have started to use the mail2web address for many things.

you might want to look in to seven beta it gives the option to push your work email might have to install some stuff on your actual work system if you can but it works pretty well
www.community.seven.com along with giving you access to global contacts and also accessing your calendar i don't use those features but the email works and pushes fast i'm using it on a edge connection and get them within the same minute of them being sent on my phone using seven

i just got the email today i had got a heads up on ppcgeeks but didn't think it was tru
i'm also interested in seeing if there is another activesync solution out there that's free and as function as mail2web if not i'll probably open up a new gmail account and use that just for voicemail emails from youmail, contacts and calendar events

yea same here it's easier to get appoints me through outlook and let contacts sync up wasn't there somebody on the boards that hard there own server? i think for like 5 bucks a year or something like that or like 25 for the whole year i remember somebody one had a server though
I received the email 15 days ago and I did the upgrade.
I'm now testing the 60-day free trial: everything works well and finally you view the mail in html
Even though I do not have intention to pay to read mail, and I hope that in these 2 months google implements its Sync with the email and I'llmove smoothly to that.
As i said above, try Seven Beta, it works for me for my non mail2web mail. They say it will do Google contacts and calendar as well but i have yet to try it.
I've also received this email and this troubles me cause I use Mail2web excessively to sync my contacts.
Obviously I"m using the free version cause Who Wants to pay for email ?
If there is no other alternative I"ll just have to setup my own Server.. this is really disappointing. I liked there services And them saying that this Services are not available free cause of Licensing is lame and not tru

Android's Exchange ActiveSync Integration

After using both the iPhone and a WiMo handset, I'm saddened by what I consider to be a pretty poor implementation of ActiveSync on Android. There are a few issues that I'm not sure are related to the N1 specifically or Exchange on Android in general.
I'm a bit worried because I do use Touch Down and while it improved a lot of the usability issues with the native client, it hasn't solved what I now think is just poor Exchange implementation on the OS level.
Here is my biggest issue:
Delete message/mark as read+unread in Outlook client --> resolution with Nexus takes exceptionally long or requires refresh or performance of some function on the device that forces communication with exchange server (i.e. send an e-mail or create/modify a contact, etc.).
It's frustrating because I see packet activity on the N1 immediately after performing a message delete or some other action in Outlook, which means that the changes are being pushed to the phone but the N1 client is just sitting on them.
Basically the N1 is not refreshing the inbox or the notification panel until some other action like send or receiving a new message is performed.
I don't even bother trying to use the built-in integration. Just get Touchdown from the market. There's a demo there to try and if you like it, it is $20. Well worth it.
Mark - thanks but I did mention in my post that I already use Touchdown. It does not fix these issues....
To be honest I had the same issue on my last 3 windows mobile handsets (using WM6.1 and 6.5) - many times messages deleted/marked read on the server would not update until an event triggered a sync from the server such as a received email.

[Q] Direct Push

I absolutely love my focus with WP7, but my new office only supports direct push and they wont allow this hotmail connector thing.
Are there any plans to include this support in the upcoming release. I hate the idea of having to give up my windows phone because it wont support exchange like most other phones.

It does support exchange activesync. In fact it is THE only push email technology the phone supports (both Hotmail and Gmail use EAS).
thanks for the reply. I take it this means, I shouldn't expect a change and need to order a new phone.

That means your Focus currently already supports push email from your Exchange server. What you need is to talk to you IT admin about how to configure it (you will need to connect to an external exchange server address that is accessible via internet, not your desktop Outlook) and if you are allowed to do so (some companies add additional permission policy to limit the access). A new phone doesn't solve you any thing. EAS is not a new technology. It's been here about 5 years since old Windows Mobile 5.0.
So what specifically do i need to request since the current setup works with WM 6.5, iphone, and android.
There is nothing special need to be done on Focus. Exchange Active Sync is the same as on WM. iPhone or Android. The only thing that WP7 lacks, from what I read, is email encryption. If your company requires email encryption policy, it will not work. But again, Android never really supports email encryption either. So, if you have Android working (not using 3rd party software like TouchDown), you should be fine.
What exactly is your problem with your Exchange Sync. Outlook Hotmail connector has nothing to do with it. It is only required if you want to sync your non-Exchange Outlook calendar and contacts to hotmail.
Actually, I have only tried it with WM 6.5 and iPhone. Email does require encryption. When I try to add the settings to the focus it just says it outlook account info is incorrect. I had heard 3rd hand that people were able to get android going so thanks for the heads up. I was about to order an atrix.
I guess iPhone 4 is my only real option...
I'm willing to bet you just have the settings incorrect and your focus will work perfectly.
I work for Microsoft and I've had WM5, WM6.5, all of the iphones, and now a Samsung Focus all connected to corporate restricted exchange.
Our corporate policies are very strong, and yet our phones work fine. I can't read an encrypted message on the phone (but no phone other than the old WM can do that), but as far as connecting and downloading mail I think WP7 does it best. The only feature I believe is currently missing is threaded view, which I would assume is coming at some point.
My WP7 phone is currently connected to two separate exchange servers (MS corp, and outlook.com, which is similar to hotmail). So it's all possible.
What is it you're trying to do, and what's not working? Hotmail should work 100% since I believe they've rolled out direct exchange support for all accounts.
Thanks for helping.... Email works fine with hotmail, yahoo, and gmail. Its only when I try my outlook exchange mail that I have any issues. I have tried all of the possible permutations for setup.
I am not the only one with this problem
answers.microsoft.com/en-us/winphone/forum/wp7-sync/does-windows-phone-7-sync-to-outlook/48ae2598-f773-4b4c-87cc-54d8c5c012d2
pocketnow.com/windows-phone/how-to-sync-windows-phone-7-with-outlook
They both seem to point out the deficiency with the phone.
So you have ecncrypted corporate email and dont have a problem?
You've lost me a little bit. Which are you trying to sync to Outlook (the desktop application), or Exchange (the mail server system)?
If you're trying to sync to Outlook, then i think you're out of luck. But, if you're trying to sync to Exchange (which is what 90% of people will have Outlook sync to), then it should work. I read both of the articles you linked, and they refer to Outlook data syncing, not to exchange. At least from what I gathered.
The phone can sync any mails with exchange, but there are two limitations. Specific private encrypted mails can't currently be read on any phone I believe (I think WM6.5 was the last OS to support them), and the WP7 device doesn't support full OS and storage encryption. It is possible for an Exchange admin to require that setting, although it's not common. A future release should include device encryption.
So, if you have a requirement on the second, then it sounds like WP7 won't current work for you. But, if it's not device encryption that you're looking for, then it sounds like WP7 should work fine.
Thanks for your help. I am trying to synch with exchange. I'll keep trying to configure it. I've asked our IT guys for help, but they have never even seen a phone with 7.
When I setup the account, there is a setting for logs. Do you happen to know where those end up and how I might get to them?
I don't know where the logging goes, but perhaps the error message your getting can be helpful?
I ran across this page:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...exchange/7ccd6098-f9b5-44c7-84c6-2fd9e6a097f9
Which appears to hit some of the issues you're facing, and might provide some validation to the settings you're using.
Turns out your hunches were right, after escalating the issue for a week, the IT team came back and said "ooops" we forgot to add you to the list.
I put in the settings and everything works great. Thanks for challanging my assumption.

[Q] Windows 8 and Exchange Server

Hey Folks,
managed to install Win8 Consumer Preview without any problems..running smooth and stable on a medion AIO Touch Machine..
Also managed to create a domain account on that machine..
Question :
We have a Exchange Server 2003 in our local network..i tried to create a connection in the Mail app by adding an account -> Exchange, entered all the required informations and tried to connect, without success, after 2 minutes always failed.
Anyone an idea what could be wrong or is it just because of the consumer preview.
Or is it a thing because of SSL ?...
But there are no possibilities to configure them...
Any hint is highly appreciated.
Saludos
Sunny
Got the exact same problem. Looks like its ok at first since a green box appears to the left, and then it says syncing right before it fails and asks for further details.
Then i just get "[email protected]" not available. Think its just broken in the preview.
Same Problem with Exchange 2007.
I installed Win 8 on my Lenovo X220T. When I want to use the calender it tells me to register a microsoft account, but frankly spoken, I don't want to. So is there a way to directly add an exchange account, where all my calendar data is stored? And where do I add an exchange account?
Thanks!
What is weird is I had Exchange working fine by signing into the Microsoft Account and setting it up. But then I joined our domain, and now I cannot get it to connect at all.
It may be a glitch in this preview, but try un-joining the domain and see if it works for you then. I just did that, and my Exchange inbox is running again.

So, what does that mean? Does it mean that I HAVE TO sign up a microsoft account in order to not syncing with it, but with my exchange server? I want to directly sync with my exchange server... windows phone 7 can do it as well...

I couldn't find a way to not sign into a MS account before setting up my exchange account (but yes, after that it directly syncs).
This could easily be because this is a consumer preview, of course. But I have a MS account, so it wasn't a big deal to me. I signed in, and it let me sign into the exchange account.
But again, the odd thing is once I joined the domain, I lost the ability to set this up. When I left the domain, the exchange account worked again.
For now I'm just chalking that up to pre-release weirdness, and using it off domain.

Yes, Exchange 2007, uses SSL.
Attached is what the display looks like once it's up. Sorry for all the redacting, but I don't want to spread anyone's personal info.
The inbox is pretty basic, and your options are limited, but then I've not installed an Office product or anything, I'm just connecting through its normal interface, the way I would through Windows Phone or the like.
Going to try installing Office in the Desktop environment today I hope. No idea if that'll work at all.
Connected to 2 Exchange Servers
FWIIW I've got it connected to two Exchange Servers (a corporate 2007 system and a hosted 2010 system) and it is working.
A few notes:
Those that have commented here about having to first logon with an MS Live account (if joined to a Domain or using a Local User Account/Profile) I am seeing the same thing. Not real happy with this (actually I’m not real happy with a lot of App issues surrounding the whole “must use a Windows Live Logon/Profile to get the full features of this App approach but I promised myself I’d not do the rant in this post”) However once that has been done it appears that you can set up multiple accounts with ease.
Having corporate IT correctly set up Exchange Front-End Certs and Mobile Device Policies correctly are critical (and yes, I’ve designed a few Exchange systems in my time so I know some of the mistakes that can be made there) so if people are seeing policy-applied errors or sync refusal problems it could be because of the Beta nature of the app but I’d also would be looking at the Front-End or CAS server setups as well as currently deployed policies (depending on the version of Exchange)
Overall my impression so far is that the App feels remarkably like the original email/calendar App in WP7, which is a shame because what MS should be shooting for is an App that works more like the WP7 Mango version. Like that version I’d really like to see the following:
• Option to create separate tiles for each account or selectively combine accounts together at the users discretion (this feature kicks ass over the iPhone/iPad/Android options right now and I want it in Metro as well)
• Option to select Calendars and Colors that I want to use in the Calendar Function (right now I get every Calendar folder I have created on both exchange servers – hated that on the pre-Mango WP7 and hating it on WP8 DP as well
• Needs to work correctly regardless of whether it is a domain account, local account, or MS live account (seriously MS, this should be a no-brainer)
With only 36 hours to really bang on it so far I’m sure I’ll find a few more quirks but so far it kind of sorta works as advertised for me. Juts needs a LOT of refinement
