Stick to Amon_Ra's recovery image if you have a magic - myTouch 3G, Magic General

[EDIT]
Sorry for being rude, I did not mean I do not like cyanogen the person (he is great.) But for the ROMs in the sapphire section that say to use cyanogens recovery that is fine. But it would be REALLY nice if they included "Oh btw this recovery image has a console that is UN-USABLE for the magic because it was made for the g1 and has no soft keyboard. So if you cannot adb your phone (like a lot of people because the drivers are sketchy) you should prob keep using amon_ra's recovery image since you can partition from there.
[EDIT]

If you had actually read the information posted all over the forums and the internet you would know that the mods do not overwrite the boot partition in the phone. So if you go into the restore mode and do a "wipe" and then reboot you would get your phone working again.
Dont blame others for your stupidity...

I didn't directly blame others, I just didn't understand why someone who made a sapphire rom would reccomend using cyanogens recovery image, when it is for the g1 and you CANT access the console.
I did a wipe, the phone will NOT boot, at all. The only way to get a hero rom to boot on my phone is to format and partition the sd card after installing the update.zip. If my sd card is not formatted the ROM won't load... So I am stuck.
I don't get how people can install roms w/ out partitioning their SD again because it does not work for me.
Sorry for being blunt, and upset. But my phone does not work anymore, and it is very frustrating because windows won't detect my mytouch. I have installed all the drivers, so can you please help instead of critizing me??
I need drivers for the t-mobile mytouch that actually work on xp sp-2. Or since I cannot boot how can I flash a different recovery image to the phone? Can I do it w/ an update.zip?

Okay now here is what is happening...
I got adb finally, and it will only get to recovery it says
adb devices
blahblah recovery
I try to type
fastboot boot recovery-RAv1.2.1G.img
Then I get < waiting for device >
And it just hangs forever! Why? Please help me...

Actually cyanogens recovery does let you fromat sd without console. It works on dream and magic. I used it on my buddys mt3g yesterday.
Next option.....and here is the kicker.......use sd reader to reformat and partition the card and copy over new update.zip. BTW you must have an older recovery since all current ones have the update choose zip option. Also search for rav 1.2 recovery.

nice how people diss the devs when they dont understand what they`re doin in the first place!

Cyanogen is THE MASTER!

Mods PLease close this thread, Thank you!!!!

Put your hate on your own stupidity fool!!!
The developers does a great favor for all of us sharing there work.

WTF... I meant I hate cyanogens recovery console.. Not his forum moniker!
I appreciate all his work greatly, he is a genius.
"Actually cyanogens recovery does let you fromat sd without console"
Where??
For now I am sticking to Amon RAs recovery, and unless it is clear how to format the SD without a soft keyboard in the recovery console others should be reccomended to do the same.
So typical to think I am trolling, when I was just frustrated with the fact it is RECOMMENDED to use cyanogens recovery. There is NO soft keyboard for the console, so what is the point if you own a magic?

yakovich, how stupid are you?
You try to fastboot in recovery mode.
Idiot.
Have you ever heard the word "spl"?

Why are you flaming me?
If you even attempted to read what I said at the time -- I could not fastboot because I did not have adb or shell or anything. And I had a terminal (cyanogen recovery only) that has no SOFT keyboard (you know the magic doesn't have a keyboard right?) I had to install ubuntu on a different machine to get my phone to boot.

Yako, if you were smart you would either delete this whole thread or edit the title. you are coming across as an ass.

LOL... I know, it was REALLY my fault.
You guys all know the shear frustration I was facing at the time, and I hope you can all forgive me for coming off as crass and ignorant. It was really my mistake, and I'm glad it happened because I figured out a much better way of partitioning w/ shell.
I will make it up, in time... promise. I rly <3 this forum.

I can undesrtand your frustration and can appriciate the honesty. But nice to see you changed the topic of this thread to be more constructive so the rest of us will be able to see it as useful information!
And as you wrote "'m glad it happened" you probably learned a alot. Most important is that your mobile isn't bricked

Why close the thread? People whether right or wrong arent alowed to vent thier frustrations while asking for help? There have been many many messages like i tried to flash this 32a on my G1 please help... yes they should have read what they were about to do first but we still try and help or tell them thier phone is FUBAR.. You guys with your name on roms are getting a little swelled in the head i think thats my opinion and im entitled to it. You tweak roms whoopie.. you can't even write code to get bluetooth to work so to me that means all you do is tweak someone elses work.. thier ive vented. now you can close the thread and/or ban me for speaking out too.

I agree, Amon_Ra's is much easier to use and ment for the sapphire/MT3G that doesn't have the hard keyboard while the cyanogen is better suited for the G1 which does have the physical keyboard.

It seems to me you're trying to run the fastboot commands from the recovery image, but they're two different things. Fastboot work when you boot with POWER+BACK into fastboot, if you can't get there it seems you might have messed up flashing the SPL?

File names In recovery and on sd card

I have been reading and attempting two flash anything for 2 days. I am new as I have stated in some threads and need baby steps unfortunately like im
sure some others do. I have been able to unlock, root, and get into recovery but after that no dice. I get everything Im suppose to do but... I am not able
to flash anything and I have looked for help in threads and have had some help and success but more importantly all detail is not clear to me all the time. I
am on here because I want the most out of my phone and all the goodies and appreciate the work of everyone. Coming from Windows to Android is
different and I understand will take sometime to gain the knowledge needed but it seems as you/we are supposed to know everything already or if you/we
dont understand what to do then you/we shouldnt be flashing some say. I disagree with that because I started the same way on my HD and eventually
was able to help new ppl to the forum. We all have been there at some point trying to learn and being clueless then finally getting it. For instance I was
looking at a theme thread and there was no instruction from the author am I just suppose to know what to do with the file being that Im not a week into
this and have never dealt with android? Also what to write in some command prompts is not the same for everyone different and thats not always clear.
With that being said this being a new device I would hope that things will be more written out to help and if its not at least be able to get help. This is just
in some cases not all . Again I am thankful for everyones work on here.
Now with the files I have trouble with are pretty much every file I have placed on my sd card not being recognized except Modocas rom until I renamed it
update.zip. Until then in recovery nothing would be recognized and even still the rom failed to install in which I have no clue why and have been seeking an
answer and so have others. If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated for me and others and also to give detail on what to do with
what we are given. Thanks to everyone who contributes on here and make the experience that much better.
Every one of the instructions that are on this forums (in the dev area) are explained in detail. You must have some core understanding of basic linux commands and android file system. Those we are not going to teach you here. There are many documents on android itself (search on google) and HTC also has a lot of documentation on flashing.
However with that said, rooting instructions were to the point and should be able to follow without issues. thefallen has written it instructions for windows/dos and I've recapped them for linux/osx. To be honest, commands are the same for adb and fastboot.
Amon_Ra also has a good instructions on how to update his recovery. Pretty much if I should recap, I'd say boot phone in boot loader and fastboot flash recovery new_recovery_image.img
As for the themes and most of the updates, always run a nandroid first and update. What do I mean by that? Nandroid is the backup utility in Amon_Ra's recovery. If you ran it, you can restore to that. Call it a restore point but it's more than that (read on that so you know what it actually does). Why nandroid? So you can restore if you don't like the effects of what you just done. Now you can just update via zip that you download.
I think it's very simple. What do you need explained in detail? Most of the stuff you are requesting is simple knowledge. I am not saying I am holier. I am just saying I am used to the commands. Once you flash it a few time, it'll come to you too. But please do read up on how to restore an image from HTC. Go to HTC Global, and support and pull up google ION.
Read thru the instructions. If you are still confused, feel free to PM me.
If recovery is only recognizing update.zip, are you sure you have Amon_Ra's recovery on there? Have you tried to reflash his recovery image?
Thank you guys. I figured out what I was doing wrong.

I think I bricked my nexus (my fault) please help!

Hello all,
I think I may have bricked my nexus one. It is completely my fault for attempting things that I knew little about, so flame away But after the flaming, if anyone is willing to help I would be sooooo thankfull...
I successfully rooted my phone following the instructions on this page: (all links edited with a double asterisk as I don't believe I can post links)
h**p://theunlockr.com/2010/01/02/how-to-root-the-nexus-one/
Then successfully installed cyanogenmod (which is awesome!) following this page:
h**p://theunlockr.com/2010/01/08/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-nexus-one/
All was well, I even got the modaco desire rom up and running, and was happily switching back and forth using the recovery screen. I had nand backups for specific setups, etc.
Then I decided it would be good to know how to go back to stock, and found this page:
h**p://**w.androidspin.com/2010/05/06/guide-unrooting-your-nexus-one-its-like-it-never-happened-almost/
I followed the instructions to the letter (I think) except for erasing userdata (it said "failed: remote not allowed"). I thought that things would be ok, since I'd recently wiped, so I followed the page till the end.
The phone rebooted, and I got the original nexus boot animation - but it's in an endless loop! What's worse, it that now when I try to go to the bootloader or recovery mode, I get the exclamation triangle with the little android.
Is there any way through a command prompt (or other method) that I can fix this? I tried to re-flash the RA recovery image through the command prompt, but the response was, "waiting for device."
ANYTHING that anyone can suggest to help, I would be so thankful! I've been loving the nexus, and hate to think that I crippled it
Thanks in advance,
Randy
I doubt its bricked.
Noticed you didnt mention that fast boot doesnt work? (power button+trackball) try it.
Once you get to fastboot you can flash any ROM back. (fastboot flash **** commands from a command shell)
Did you ever perform a Nand Backup from Recovery?
It's not bricked, the only way to brick is to interrupt power when flashing a Radio image
Connect phone to PC. Open command prompt.
adb reboot recovery
Wipe, reflash.
So far, nobody has managed to brick a Nexus. There is no way as the fastboot mode can restore the whole phone and can't be messed with. Make sure you have the latest version of the SDK with correct USB drivers and fastboot. Then try and reflash the recovery image.

britoso, thank you soooooo much! The only way that I knew to get into bootloader/recovery was via power button/volume down, but power/trackball brought up the bootloader screen, and I clicked on fastboot. I was able to flash the RA recover image through the command terminal via fastboot, then able to get into recovery. I had cyan and modaco sense on the sd, and was able to flash one of them on.

I never thought I'd be so happy to see "quietly brilliant"!!! I WILL buy you a beer, a case in fact as soon as money clears my paypal account.
I have learned my lesson, research research research. (I did do some, but not enough to feel comfortable with what I was doing - hence my cry for help!)
Other than the phone and OS itself, the thing I like most about the nexus is the fact that one CAN root, and then customize (sold a Telus moto droid because I could not do that very thing).
I digress... thanks again so much!
And Paul, thanks for your sense ROM; I've had HTC phones from the Touch to the the diamond to the Hero, and missed the UI!

Glad to hear it. You learn the most by trial and error.
I think i got the same problem. i tried to Unlock Bootloader and Root Google Nexus One which was successful but then i tried to superboot it and when it came to the part where you "double click the ‘install-superboot-windows.bat’ file" i clicked it but it did not go to the nnext screen where the superboot completes it just stayed at the "bootloader screen". i must hve not done something or done something wrong i dont know.
So then i unplugged the phone from the pc and rebooted it. when it reeboted i wasnt getting any network, the phone was slow and the notification bar would not slide down...also i noticed the phone restarting on itself...
/i tried all kinds of "restore to factory settings" but not solved. Can anyone tell me what to do tht will work. I coud not understand what was said in the above thread as i am new to this android n my first time rooting n stuff n i believe that solution would work for me too..if some one could please explain in simple tirms the steps i need to take would be good...
Really appreciate it....

Is this bricked?!?!?!

Some time ago i used the rom manager, to install a new recovery. Ever since then, every time i boot the G1 it boots all the way up, to Cyanogens froyo build, and it FC once i unlock the device,(with the slide unlock screen). Tried to reboot into recovery via home+power buttons, but nothing at all happens..... once i release the buttons it just boots up normally. Is there a way to fix this problem? Or is this G1 seen the last of its days?? I wish i could post the rom build version and the recovery what was supposedly "updated" but this happened over a month ago. I have been using a tp2/tilt2, but windows mobile is garbage and gives me a migraine,(rather have root canal than use windows mobile). Can someone please help me fix this????
wow, thanks for the overwhelming support!!!! You guys are the best!!!
get use it here, i posted about like 3 questions waiting and i end up finding and doing it on my own, But if you are able to boot into rom you are not bricked at all..
brick is only when you cant boot into recovery or bootloader, and you only get tmob screen or jus plain black screen
Q&A forum is normally faster.
As already said, you are not bricked. There has been a warning somewhere not to flash a recovery from cm5/6, not that anyone read it...
As you are on CM6 I guess you have death spl. If you want your recovery back, download you favourite one and flash it via fastboot.

Your doing too much with the SDK.
Simply install it, dont worry about that java stuff, just install it. Put your recovery in the tools folder. Open command line and fastboot your recovery in.
That java stuff is for developers --- you just need the fastboot executable and the recovery file in the tools folder and you can flash it in. And then go get a Samsung Galaxy or whatever.

dell streak boots into stock recovery image after successful recover image flash

Ok, so I recently bought a used dell streak off of a friend, and although I like it, I don't like dell's ROM, so my main goal here is to install a custom rom.(Specifically, streakdroid 2.0.0). I was able to root my phone, however I am having issues flashing the recovery image,to get to installing the custom rom. I have tried using rom manager to install clockwork, and when I do it says it installs fine, but when I tell it to reboot into clockwork, the phone just boots up normally into android. When I boot using power + vol up + vol down, it just boots into the stock recovery image. I have also tried using fastboot to flash the recovery image using the clockwork recovery image for the dell streak. The command line says the flash was completed, yet again when I boot into the recovery image it is still the dell streak stock recovery image. I also renamed the file: system/ect/install-recovery.sh to system/ect/install-recovery.sh.bak , following another post's advice, still no luck. I have spent several hours looking on forums on how to fix it, and can't find anyone with this problem on the dell streak. I have also tried to find a way to install a custom ROM without using a recovery image, but haven't been able to do that either. Any help at all would be greatly, greatly appreciated, even a possible tip to point me in the right direction.
For some more info about my phone, I do believe that it might be a corporate edition, I don't know if that would effect anything or not, the other details are as follows:
Model Number : Dell Streak
Android version: 2.2.2
Baseband version: GAUSB1A135100-US
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9-perf
OEM Version: GAUSB1A135100
Build number : 15609
Custom Recovery – Prevent Overwriting on Dell Streak
I already tried the advice given on that link. I can't even get into the custom recovery image even one time.
Also I meant to post this under the Q & A forum, if it's possible for someone to move this post, I'd appreciate it.

Rename install-recovery.sh before you install the custom recovery. If the phone boots even once the recovery is over written with the stock recovery if you don't.
Also - there are a bunch of posts that state that ROM Manger does not work on the Streak.
I have also tried using adb to flash the recovery image after renaming the file and immediately booting into the recovery image after installing. Still same issue. Also without even renaming that file, I believe I am still supposed to be able to access the custom recovery image one time.
You do have to enter the stock recovery to get into ClockworkMod or StreakMod. It's what you do after you get into stock recovery that takes you into CM or SM.
Rather than tell you how to do it, I will tell you to READ those guides posted above for the answer. If you don't want to do that, then you should stop messing with something you don't understand before you brick your new toy! The Streak doesn't root, recover, or update ROMs like other Android devices.
Ok, while I did have legitimate issues with rom manager it turns out I had a misunderstanding of how to install streamod,as you pointed out. Please forgive me, I was pouring over a ton of information in a very short amount of time, including being completely new to android, how to install apks from a pc, jailbreaking, using adb fastboot to flash images, all for the first time. I didn't realize you had to update from within the stock recovery image to install streakmod. I appreciate your help allot. I was able to successfully install streakdroid like I wanted, wouldn't have been able to do it without your help. Thanks again.
Glad to see you got it up and going. I can understand your frustration. The first time I played with my Streak I bricked it and took it to someone to fix and he didn't know much more than I did about it.
When I got it back unfixed, I spent several days reading and now consider myself fairly proficient in the art of flashing, although I haven't made any steps into cooking up my own ROMS or all the other technical stuff that goes with what these unselfish guys go through for us.
Have fun!!

Sorry to have been so tough on you. That's the only way to get people to UNDERSTAND what they are doing to their devices. Now that you found it on your own, you will remember it. You also stumbled onto some other info that may not pertain to your situation now, but you will remember seeing it in the future when you need it!
Here is another concise guide that is excellent and a short read:

Yea, I definitely understand where you guys are coming from. I do like to try to figure stuff out on my own, and did spend some considerable time reading before I posted on this forum. You guys gave the exact help I was looking for, just a nudge in the right direction. Knowledgeable people can save newbs like me hours in frustration. What threw me off was partially bad luck, but definitely due to incomplete understanding as well. It was the combination of rom manager not working , and me not properly understanding how to install streakmod that led to me thinking it had something to do with the bootloader blocking the recovery image from being flashed. I thought I was gonna end up having to flash the bootloader but definitely didn't want to do this as that would have been very vulnerable to bricking. I read the basics on the different images, and what they did before I tried anything. I did end up at one point with my streak not being able to boot, or update from an update.pkg but since I knew I didn't touch the bootloader, I knew I should be able to get it up and running again. THanks for the link, I will definitely read it.
did u try
flash the clockworkmod or the other recovery image. when the flash was done, it will boot the dell streak, meanwhile, press vol up and down, boot into the recovery mood again, I mean NEVER let the streak boot into the rom afte u flash the image.

As noted by the post just prior to this one, the system partition is read-only. You need to change it temporarily to read-write using a file manager that can do the job. I used Super Manager, but there are plenty of root file manager apps on the Market that can do the job.

Please help a newb flash a Streak

Hello guys,
please dont think i am lazy, i have read most of the topics here but i am now just more confused then before. There are so many solutions, do's and dont's that i have no idea how to do it.
I have managed to root my streak running android 2.2
I would like to flash it with a newer custom rom but i have no clue how to do it. Could please someone tell me step by step. I have downloaded half of the links shown here in the forum but still have no clue.
Also, could someone tell me what rom to pick. I wanted to flash the streakdroid 2 but i have read so many comments about low performance and other problems. Any other rom recommended.
Any help is greatly appreciated and i hope one day to be able to help others.
TIA
Ok first things first you need to flash streakmod or clockworkmod via fastboot. I prefer streakmod as I sometimes get errors with nandroiding on clockwork. Follow the guides for flashing custom recoveries in the threads for them. Once you've got a custom recovery just place the rom of your choice onto the root directory of your SD card (not in a folder). Then boot into recovery by holding volume up + power. At the first screen select option 2. The screen will turn black, press power. Once in the custom recovery select install update. Navigate to the custom rom and select it. Wait a minute for it to complete then select reboot. You're all set. I recommend booting back into recovery and doing a nandroid back up after you get everything set up. As far as roms go, I'd go for dj-steves 1.9.0 its the best IMO. Good luck!

Android Development is not for questions or Problems
Moving to General
Use StreakMod Recovery if you want a custom ROM, To flash a stock ROM you use the stock recovery. See this thread for a tool to help you flash the recovery you need. The latest version of StreakMod eliminates the step of hitting the power button and the nandroid backups work.
For stability use the latest Strekdroid Froyo version (1.9.0), SimpleStreak or a stock ROM. Read the development section here for other options.
Here is a page of Streak related links, lots of stuff there you may want to look at.

I don't have time to go into detailed steps for you right now, but here is what I can recommend:
Download and uncompress MultiRecovery Flasher from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000455
Flash StreakMod Recovery.
Download Simple Streak from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113256
Save this on the root of your sd card. For ease of use you can rename it update.zip
Install the drivers on your computer (assuming windows) for the Dell Streak. You can get them here:
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Handheld/R288920.exe
Reboot into fastboot mode. To do that, with the phone off, hold down the power button and the camera button at the same time. When the white screen comes on, release the buttons and then touch the fastboot "button" when presented on the screen. Now plug the usb cord in and the bottom of the phone should say something along the lines of Fastboot Mode or similar.
Run the MultiRecover Flasher and choose StreakMod Recovery. When this is done (it takes less than 1 minute normally), you need to boot into your new recovery. With the phone shut off, hold the power button and both volume buttons at the same time. When the screen with the 4 choices appears, choose option #2 (should be something about upgrading using update.pkg or similar). StreakMod will load. Browse the options here to see what's available. Go into advanced, then nandroid and make a full nandroid backup. This will take 5 - 10 minutes or so. Then do a data wipe/factory reset. Then the option to apply update.zip from sd card. If you had named your rom to update.zip and put it in the root of the sd card, choose update.zip from sd card again. If not, choose the other option and be presented with a list of files/folders on your sd card. Find your rom's .zip file and apply it. When it's done choose reboot now and enjoy. If you run into problems booting the first time, shut the phone down (it may require a battery pull to do so) and power on using the power button and both volume buttons and choose factory reset at that menu (this is the one you used to get into StreakMod recovery earlier). The device will end up rebooting twice (you really can't tell since it's always the Dell Logo, just takes longer) and you should be good to go.
If you have any questions, post them here and someone will be happy to help you along. I'm not an expert by no means, I've just done this several times as I like trying out the different Roms. The nandroid backup and restore options in Streakmod recovery is a godsend. If I install a rom and have problems, I can revert to what I had (settings, apps, layouts, everything) in just a few minutes with no computer required, all from the phone. Learn to love it.
I get so sick of all these retarded questions and threads.I have never seen anything like this...where EVERYTHING IS ANSWERED,EXPLAINED and still people say "Don't think I am lazy".
I know,if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it...but this is way too much.

I agree with you to a point, however when I bought my Streak back in February the first thing I did was come to this forum as I remembered it from my AT&T Tilt days. I started reading...alot. I got more and more confused myself. I read stuff like 318, 309, UK versions, US versions, etc. I didn't know what was compatible with what. I read more, and finally attempted something and it worked and I was hooked. But mind you, I'm a computer geek and understand how things work in the computer world. At work, I'm surrounded by people who don't and it amazes me how much hand holding I have to do for basic tasks. So I get it when people say they are confused. My rationale behind giving the OP the instruction that I did is that once he does it one time, he'll get more comfortable, understand the process a little more, and maybe start to understand some of the other stuff. Then who knows, in a couple months he may be motivated to make the next bada$$ rom for our loved devices. It could happen... ;-)
We all have to start somewhere.....and this forum is the place for it to happen, because of its wonderful, selfless members who are willing to lend out a helping hand expecting nothing in return.
Thank you so much guys. Got it all working and flashed the rom i got recommended, works perfectly.
I really havent been lazy. You just have ro understand that the start,is really hard for a beginner. I need to get into some basics, to understand what and why. I have flashed hundreds of wm phones but this is something different. I prefer to ask and be on the save side. How does it help either of us if i brick the device and ask after?
I really appreciate the people which dont get tired explainig something for the tenth time, this are the people which make this as big as it is.
Again, thank you so much for helping. I hope i ll be able to return the favor one day.
