I have read all over this looking for a way to enable 3g on the mytouch 3g (T-Mobile unlocked to AT&T) for AT&T Frequency band. Is there anyway to do this, or am I stuch with edge?
You need a Rogers Magic for AT&T
yes it is hardware related, not software. you cannot just unlock the frequency. sell the mytouch and invest in the roger's magic if you want at&t 3g frequency. also comes with more ram and memory, good investment =)

The 3g frequencies are incompatible. It is a hardware issue, rather than a software one.
Tmobile operates their 3g on the 1700/2100 bands, and their myTouch 3g comes with that respective antenna.
ATT operates their 3g on the 850/1900 bands. ATT 3g phones need to have that matching antenna to get 3g speeds.
You are stuck with edge. I was in a similar situation. I have a mytouch (no 3g) and a HTC Magic from Rogers (3g works). Overall, the difference is not a huge difference. Loading NYTimes takes 16 seconds over 3g and 26 seconds over EDGE.
Rogers operates their 3g on the same bands as ATT, mainly because Rogers used to be Rogers ATT. A Rogers HTC Magic will be 3g capable on the ATT network. Additionally, the Rogers HTC magic has 288mb of RAM as opposed to the 192mb inside the myTouch 3g. The Rogers Magic is also 32A with a more friendly SPL.
Overall, unless ATT ups their network speed, it is not worth the premium, in my opinion.
Unlocked myTouch3G phones
for those who are using AT&T, does AT&T force you to have unlimited internet plans using unlocked myTouch3g?

I have a myTouch on AT&T and it works with or without a data plan. Be aware that unless you specifically ask AT&T to block data, you'll be charged a per kb rate. I am currently using my device with MediaNet for $10 a month. I have unlimited family messaging so I save $5 a month on MediaNet.
I have no real complaints on using just Edge. I usually have wifi access anyway. It picked up my myTouch for $250 and it was basically new in box. The use of 3G was not worth a $200 premium for me.

I hope this not a problem posting this here. I am from Delaware and I am trying to get rid of my iPhone 3gs and get an htc magic with AT&T 3g bands. I am having no success with craigslist, it is flooded with iPhones. If anyone out there has a htc magic in great condition with warranty and wants a iPhone 3gs with a full zagg invisishield already on the phone. Please contact me at
[email protected]
Won't happen.
The Roger's Magic isn't going to put out the 3G capability you're looking for on the AT&T frequencies.
It would have to be properly scaled and designed to function on those frequencies, which it isn't. If a phone is GSM, that doesn't necessarily mean it can output the 3G speeds on any GSM provider. The MHz bandwidths need to be the same.
htc magic at&t 3g
Can anyone else confirm this, I have read multiple forums that have said that it is possible. The specs for Rogers say UMTS 850,1900 which is the same 3g freq. that AT&T uses.
It works with Rogers HTC Magic
I can confirm 3G works on AT&T with the Rogers HTC Magic.

Rogers uses the same bandwidths that ATT uses.
This is for the reason that Rogers used to be Rogers ATT.
I can confirm that my HTC Magic from Rogers gets 3g.
I just bought a My Touch 3G Slide on eBay. I got it unlocked in an hour using cellunlock.net for $10 and got it all setup. However, now I'm noticing that it never goes into 3G, just EDGE.
I searched to find if it could even work with Rogers' 3G network and I'm even more confused. So does it work with Rogers' 3G?
I've also seen posts that it works on HSPA. I've used the APNs for Rogers' HSPA and still I'm getting just EDGE. Do I have to update my radio, use CM6 or something?
Sorry, I'm new to the MT3GS. I have a MT3G/Magic and I thought the new one would be pretty much the same except with a keyboard.
I *think* that Roger's uses the AT&T bands for 3G, not T-Mobile. Sorry.

thats correct, Att and Rodgers uses the 1900mhz band and the mt3gs only has the 1700 NA band and the 850/2100mhz EU bands
That sucks. So it won't work on HSPA either then? I though Rogers offers one of those USB modems that works on 2100MHz HSPDA. Will that work with the MT3GS?

It has the 2100mhz band, but that is so you can have 3G when you go to europe. Rogers only broadcasts 1900mhz in CA.
Damn. Oh well, my wife won't know the difference between EDGE and 3G anyway. Thanks.
sorry i don't belong in this forum but how do you guys explain the g1 having 3g then its a tmobile phone does it have a att frequency for no reason?
Rogers actually sold G1s so they probably got their own version that will work on their network.

unlocked g1's from the US work on rogers network.
Beats me. The myTouch 3G Slide I got from the US works too just not on 3G but on Edge.

OK, I finally get that the frequency band is a hardware thing and that Rogers and T-Mobile use different bands.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands
So is it possible to change the actual cell phone radio chip and write a ROM that will work with it? I realize it's crazy, but with all the Android development going on, you'd think someone would have tired to get some device that only worked with T-Mobile to work on At&t.
I have am htc surround unlocked from at&t and using it currently with t-mobile everything works fine however the 3g is not working is there any configuration for the apn our something that I need to do to make it work please somebody help me.....
No. The hardware is different.
T mobile and at&t use different frequency for 3g data.
Unfortunately surround only support at&t frequency so u can't use 3g on t mobile network.
if i not mistaken the htc surround supports lte 4g.... so you might be able to
im not sure you might have to wait for a update

Not true. The Surround does NOT support 4G LTE.
In reply to the OP, the Surround isn't getting 3G on T-Mobile because it only supports AT&T's 3G bands. Carriers do that so you cannot use the phone elsewhere if you try to weasel out of your contract. If you bought it off-contract, you should have stuck with AT&T because there is no configuration or any setting that exists that will get the Surround to use T-Mobile's 3G.
If you need 3G, you should probably consider returning the phone if you still have the chance and go get the HD7 instead.
Hardware
The Data bands used for AT&T are different yes, but this phone is a data quad band phone, so the antenna should be able to pick up the signal for T-Mobile or AT&T. It should be no more than a configuration issue. Both the HD 7 for T-Mobile and the Surround for AT&T have the same radio for data reception (/us/products/compare/120-121?view=1-1&sort=0&filters=0-11-0). Add www and htc and dotcom to the link.
Nope.
ATT offers UMTS or 3G using 850mhz(the old TDMA band) and 1900mhz.
While T-mobile offers HSDPA (technically 3.5g part of the UMTS specification) using 1700MHz for uplink and 2100MHz downlink.
The Surround would have to be 850/1700/1900/2100 3G and 850/1900 GSM (voice) to work on T-Mo's 3G.
Does any one know if I can use the tmobile G2 with a canadian wireless plan if its unlocked. I have read about all that tri band stuff but its a little above my head.
Thanks!
T-mobile does not have the same 3G/4G bands as Canadian carriers (Bell, Rogers, etc)
You will only get EDGE. If you want 3G/4G go with an unlocked AT&T phone.
and if ive read correctly, you need to go to a carrier that uses gsm (because tmobile phones use gsm)
Umm, not sure what only getting edge means. Does that just mean no data, just voice and texts?

As of 2011 there are three levels of data speed that are used and the order goes like this:
4G
3G
EDGE
The speed decreases as you go from 4G to 3G, and EDGE being the slowest.
You will receive data, just not at blazing fast speeds.
From what I understand, T-Mobile uses AWS, of which three carriers here provide: Mobilicity, Wind Mobile, and Videotron.
It's not worth trying to get what EDGE you can from Rogers/Telus/Bell.
* Ontario biased *
I would recommend to get an unlocked ATT phone
So after some research, the G2 is a quad band gsm phone, which means it should work on any GSM based carrier. From what I've seen that would be mainly rogers and fido correct? Or are there cheaper alternatives?
Also I looked into the AWS but I'm not sure if my g2 is compatible with AWS. It seems as if tmobile uses both. Does that mean my phone is compatible with GSM and AWS? I'm wondering if you could confirm this Ariel?
Also I will be in the montreal area.
Yes. It will work but the G2 doesn't have the same 3G bands as Rogers. That means you'll only get EDGE which, by personal experience, sucks. I'm not sure about Fido, though.
k, what about an aws service like videotron? That should work as well correct?
I just bought an AT&T LG G2 plan on unlocking it for Tmobile/metropcs (they merged in my area) Will I be able to get full connections to everything once I unlock the phone for Tmobile network? I'd hate to realize I wont get any data or get very slow data after spending so much money.
Since MetroPCS uses Tmobiles system in my area but also still use their systems can I choose if I want to use a metropcs or a tmobile sim card? Or are they both on GSM towers and so there would be no difference? 4G for MetroPCS is available in my area but so is Tmobile HSPA+ which is better?
Not if you don't have the 1700 AWS band...

not sure what you're saying. 4G is 2100. but other than that if i leave 4G area i wont have any reception at all?
4G uses different bandwidths. Not all carries use the same... Still the same old "GSM/CDMA" scenario, just a bit more relaxed.
