I was able to root my original magic and able to download apps like ebuddy and all but when they replaced my magic i wasn't able to root i guess cause of the spl but what about the apps like ebuddy and some clock widgets i have used in my original magic can't be found

Hi guys,
New here, and have come for a bit of help. I'm trying to track down a stock ROM for branded Vodafone New Zealand Magic as my original backup before I started tinkering with Hero ROMs etc got corrupted. Anyone know where I could find this or have a rom dump please?
Phone details

(Crappy old SDcard became corrupted when I tried to backup the backup to PC! The backup is corrupted and will not load).
I've searched exhaustively, plenty of ROMs around but a stock one for New Zealand eludes me. I've pestered HTC but they have none suitable and say a update ROM is a long way off for NZ.
Is there a good list of ROMs somewhere that I'm missing or Does anyone have a stock dump they'd care to share?
(I'll probably keep playing with hero and other modded ROMs for now. on a tangent I find many will not boot on this particular phone, even with great care in wiping everything first. I have seen other users with this exact NZ phone type have trouble with many rooted roms not booting. would be nice to a have a stock rom back!)
any helpgreatly appreciated
I've not had any trouble with booting ROMs on my Voda NZ Magic. I don't have a stock ROM, but I might be able to make one as I'm running stock Cupcake on mine at the moment. I'll need to look into exactly how to do it though.
I'd suggest working through my guide, as it's essentially the exact procedure I used to install Hero on my Voda NZ Magic.
I have a Nandriod backup of a friends phone (Vodafone NZ)...
Can anyone confirm if it's safe to give out a Nandroid Backup? I assume it is... just want to be cautious..
it depends on when you or your friend create the Nandriod, it is contains any login info like google username and password. Also I am not sure Nandroid backup can be flashed to a different phone.
In theory, a nandroid backup of a phone that's had the data wiped is safe to distribute. Whether or not it'll restore to another phone, I'm not sure. I only have the one phone here to test with
hi thanks karrdenz,
I've already got a couple of hero roms working well on the phone using your method - one of the better guides around. A few htc magic rooted roms don't seem to boot, like the dalroid one.
Well I plan to blow away hero off my magic so i'm keen to be guinea pig if anyone has a nanroid of the NZ rom.

@deejayviral and others,
You will have to read the wiki and then go to General or Q and A sections when you get stuck.
There is no simple or short answer.
Please read the sticky threads.

It's my understanding that you must first downgrade to firmware 1.5 to root. Maybe that's just for the so called "one click" root process??...
root via my software its straight forward my friend even idiots can do it
Hi, wanna give Android a try so I am going to get the HTC Magic from Rogers.
I am confused can all of them be rooted now? I read about perfected SPL that Rogers Magic has which can't be rooted.
Can I use the Marketplace in Canada for paid apps now?
Lastly does Magic have 192ram or 288ram I have read both.
Thanks.
the new magics cannot be rooted as of yet (although it is in the works)... you cannot used paid marketplace in canada as of yet without installing market_enabler (which i think you need root for)...
and the rogers magic has 288ram, the mytouch 3g in the states has the 192ram...
hope this helps.. if you can find an OLD magic at a rogers store then you may have a non perfected spl..but its hit and miss.. most now have the new spl, radio and rom...
hope this helps..
oh btw i got my magic in January and it did not have the newest perfected spl, but again... hit and miss..
Is there anyway to identify this from the box. I don't think they let's boot up every device in the store.
i dont think so.. unfortunately....mabey someone else here might know, but i dont think so.. ask the store how long they have had the magic for.. if its 3 months or older you should be fine..
ill check my magic box once i get home and let you know if i see anything on it that might let you know.. will post back in a few hours..
Look for an HTC Magic. The new, updated devices (with Sense UI and the perfected SPL) are being sold under the name "HTC Magic+ with HTC Sense".
That's no guarantee that if you but a regular Magic from someone that they haven't updated it to the latest ROM already, but it's a place to start.
Don't you lose the 3G data if you don't update though?
I don't think so. I think they just scared the customers into updating. I know my noob friend loves the Sense on it, but we all know rooting the Magic is better

Yes you do because ROGERS has an implemented system to check ROM versions for phones. Although you can sign the waiver that they released (check the forums) and it makes sure they won't disable your data as long as you know about the 911 bug. If you get the Magic+, it will have 1.76.0010 which is perfected but if you buy a Magic and it has SPL 1.76.007 or lower you can root the phone and flash a custom ROM and make sure your phone is rooted and still has 3G data (unless you signed the waiver, you won't have to worry about data loss).
I want to flash my Magic with an original Vodafone ROM as the one i am running is so slow and need to get it back to working quick again.
The only problem i have is i can't find a stock ROM for a Voda branded handset.
Anyone know where i can download one from?
Thanks
I just got my magic i bought from some auction here and thatt a-hole forgot to mention it was a vodaphone...
So when i was trying to download the new roms from HTC's website it said it didn't apply to my serial nr i entered....
So how do i upgrade from this v. 1.6 and get rid of the crappy vodaphone thats infested my phone?
Regarding this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=659403 is this where i go to get the android update? how do i know if i have the 32b version....
What I want is to get rid of the vodaphone crapware and update android + that sense UI would be the icing on the cake...

I hope this covers your question. All I did was went in to Android Development forum under

I am sorry for posting in this thread but I think the OP had the right idea... The shere volume of information is overwhelming and being a complete NEWB when it comes to androids.
I just bought mine and the moron i bought it from didn't bother mentioning it was a vodaphone so now I have to make the best of it...
jumping on this android phone is like starting to watch a movie in the middle... it's real hard to get a grasp of things at first.
OK, i think i have broken my magic now.
I used Amon Ra's clean Donut ROM and installed as i have done in the past with others, but now when i reboot the phone after the ROM install it just sits at the Vodafone splash screen and thats it. I checked all my phone settings before running this and everything matched up fine.
I will post my settings when i get home, it will help anyone that is kind enough to help me out.
Incidently if i pull the battery and then put it back in, i can still get to the fast boot screen and i can still invoke the recovery ROM screen to allow me to flash a ROM, so it's not bricked, just don't know whats going on.
More than likely the ROM you flashed isn't right for your phone so you get the endless boot.

Nice one WoblyGoblin that did the trick i am back up and running.
Sweet!!
So I ended up picking up myself an HTC Magic aka Sapphire just for something to play with and to see what Android is all about. I'm a WindowsMobile guy so flashing is nothing new to me.
The phone I ended up buying is Rooted and Unlocked and is running a Cyanogenmod ROM. Now before I go ahead and starting playing around with this thing I would like to keep the Rooted and Unlocked aspect of the phone since this phone was originally locked to a different carrier. I want to flash to a rom that has HTC Sense as well, why? I'm used to the interface and I want to start with something I'm familiar with and then flash around until I find something I like so I'm looking for recomendations as to what ROM I should be flashing while keeping the root & unlock intact.
Thanks!
First we need more info bout ure magic, is it 32a or b, what radio and spl? U can find out through hboot (volume down and power on)

I'm sorry for the very late reply, I was out of the country for a couple of weeks and now I'm back. I just ended up flashing my phone to the factory Rogers ROM and my unlock did dissapear. Now I got an unlock code for it and unlocked it but I'm looking to play around with this phone more and root it, etc.
My Magic is a 32A, Radio is 6.35.16.19 and SPL is 1.76.0010
