yet another hero led, trackball & button light failure - Hero, G2 Touch General

my hero packed up few days ago but only noticed it today, no lights on buttons, trackball doesn't lightup on call, sms and leds don't work even on charging...
I'm going to Tmobile store tomorrow to have it sent out for repair/replaced.
Can anyone share their experience with tmobile UK and their policy. I'd rather have it exchanged in store then repaired to be honest... I have one hot pixel on the screen as well so I will mention that as well...

Tmobile's customer service is quite fast mate compared to orange and three, ive been on both networks and trust me, three is not reliable at all. im happily with Tmobile now for about a month with my Hero and no problems so far.
they're fast on email queries too.

thanks, what I mean by my question is in this particular case where I can imagine TMobile have had many complaints on Hero and leds, do they exchange units or simply send them out...

If its over 7 days and you dont have insurance like me it gets repaired, which in my case was fine as i had/have a perfect screen and essentially they changed the mainboard.
It took 10 days from start to finish.
Its actually bettter as you know they have tested it a new phone may have the same prob

How about 3.5 audio jack? Does it work?
My hero have the same problems like yours and audio jack doesn't work.
Are they the same HTC Hero's problems?

truth to be told I dont really use 3.5mm jack at all, maybe tried it 2/3 times in the car and maybe 3 times on the hands free...
but now that you mentioned it, I've just tried it and it doesn't work indeed!
so must be common problem across all devices - just change of mainboard i guess...
I'm wondering if I should complain about 1 dead pixel on the screen as well... do they check screens as they do warranty repairs or they just replace it with something that has more dead pixels then my original... not sure what to do...

Sad Day - HTC Diamond 2 is gone...for repairs

Well...today, for no reason whatsoever, my speaker went dead. it had been crackling (a few other threads about that) but suddenly, no sound. loud speaker works fine...infact everything else too...
so, it's off to get a new speaker put in right now with HTC (5 day workaround...like that is going to happen)
but i'd like to know if anyone else has been having issues with Speakers dying on them/crackling. I am considering taking it up with HTC if there are a few people who seem to have the same problem(s). (i got them to give me a brand new mTeoR 3 years ago because of the joystick not working properly...you just have to complain/petition enough!)
Sorry to hear this!
Are you doing this through insurance.
If not, would you mind letting this guy know what steps you took to initiate your repair?
Thanks!
The faulty speaker seems to be a common problem, I had my phone replaced because mine was crackling too. I went to the store where I got the phone only 2 or 3 days after I bought it and after demonstrating the issue they gave me a new Topaz right away.
mine has been in the service center 3times and today i sent it again.
firs time the phone wouldnt connect to the computer. they replaced the board.
got it back and the phone was scratched. sent it in again and they replaced the digitlizer and outer housing. got it back and there was a shadow when i took pictures. this time i sent it in and i mentioned that there was a lot of distortion when the earpice was in use. i told them to replace the phone and they told me that htc is not a company that replaces phones. seriously i will never buy an htc phone again. this my first time and i actually liked it more than my iphone but with all these problems the iphone is simply better. if you have owned an apple product you will know that if they cant fix it they will replace it.

whilst i agree with many of your other points regarding HTC customer service (they treat the devices like crap) i have to point out that your comment regarding apple is FALSE.
I had BOTH my ipods (older generations) returned to me with new hard drives in, but brand new scratches all over them. Apple gave me so much grief, i swore (at them/to myself) never to buy an apple product again.
as my post above says, my Diamond has gone in to be serviced (in the UK, although i live in Germany...sigh) so i will comment on how that goes when the phone is returned.
ALSO: HTC *did* replace a phone for me once (after i faked a story about leaving the country soon, and needing the phone NOW! )

the thing is that i live in the usa and i have told htc many times to replace the phone because they cant fix it + its cheaper to just replace the device rather than mess around with it and replace all the parts one by one.i also told them that dust was getting into my screen and when i received the device the dust was still there. my iphone had this problem and i took it to apple store and they just gave me a new one( non referbrished) i don't know how apple treats costumers out of usa but here they treated me much better then any company.

Just received Vibrant. External speaker not working!

I think my speaker is defective. I made sure silent mode was not on and I turned volume up on everything. I've tested ringtone, speakerphone, and Avatar. No sound at all!!! I tried a soft reset. That did nothing. Pretty sure speaker is DOA. Is there anything else I can try?
Try a Factory Reset. Settings > Privacy > Factory Data Reset
Or go to a corp Tmo store and tell them to "Take this #@$% back and give me another one" . No but why waste your time. There is already known issues with the phone im sure that Tmo will be more then happy to swap them out.... but before you leave the store TEST IT!
umm yeah just return it..
Try a reset. If it's still not working it's broken obviously. The speaker has great sound quality compared to a lot of others..
I say even if it does work after the reset, return it. What would you do if it worked for 14 days and then died again? Pay the insurance for a new one?
Speaker is definitely broken. I bought it on Ebay, and not through T-Mobile unfortunately. Don't think they will swap it out in the store. I did buy it brand new. I just had the misfortune of getting a defective phone. Everything else works great. I actually had Avatar playing. I took the battery cover off and tapped the speaker with my finger and it all of a sudden started working for a few seconds. Seems to be some sort of short. Just my luck

As long as there is no water damage it's obviously still under warranty, and they should swap it out. Not exactly sure how that would work out with all phones being under the remorse period though (they quickly directed me back to where I bought it for an exchange).
Is there a possibility of me walking into a T-Mo store and getting it swapped out even though I didn't buy it from them? The guy shipped me a brand new factory sealed phone. It wasn't like I bought it used from him. I don't really use the external speaker often at all. My phone is ALWAYS on silent mode and I very rarely watch videos or listen to music. BUT.... It still would be nice to have if I need it.

You'd need a receipt at the very least if it wasn't bought on your account.
I contacted Samsung and they are going to fix it for free. Thank god for mfg. warranty. I don't really have a problem sending this out and waiting a couple weeks for it to come back. Still got my Nexus One
Awesome to hear, and kudos to Samsung.
I think this is worth a mention. I shipped my phone to Samsung last Tuesday. They received it on Friday. I was shocked when they e-mailed me this afternoon to tell me that they have already replaced the part and shipped it back to me today! I think it's great that they took care of this so quickly. I've had some very bad experiences with some other companies when it comes to warranty (no names mentioned). This is by far the best experience I've had. I probably should wait until I receive the phone and make sure the speaker is working before I post this. But they have kept me well informed. They gave me their diagnosis of the problem and told me that they replaced the entire part. I'm very happy with Samsung thus far!
.
I have bought a slide off ebay and tmobile has replaced 2 of them already. Not sure if samsung is the same was as HTC but ya if all else fails try that out

just knock like to the doors on back housing. i will work again. have the same issue with mine. vibrant built quality is poor.

My girl has the slide, I told her to just wait for vibrant lol. That thing is acting up all the time, she's on her third one. Always 3g issues, texts wont send, etc. I've had that before, but its all behind now with the vibrant lol. Not to mention it is way faster.

That should not be a solution at all after paying $200 - $500 on a device you should have all parts working. "Knocking" on it is ridiculous.
The vibrant is not the highest build quality but I certainly wouldn't call it poor. Defects happen all the time every company has defects. Samsung replaced it for him. All is well.
Well considering price I think its poor. For example volume button is also loose it rattles all the time, and I would prefer they make it from metal but then it wouldn't be so light. Otherwise its a great phone.can't wait for froyo.

the phone isn't perfect and everyone knows that. some are manufactured badly, no different than any other phone company on the planet. That's why we have the warranty. It's a year both on the phone and the battery. Note the latter.
I've actually been pleased with the build quality... to each their own. I can't think of another phone I owned and thought, Wow, this is so much better built than my Vibrant. Ha

My HTC swap experience....

so I was an unfortunate user who had dust under their screen and it was only getting worse. Rooted and unlocked I decided to go the swap route plus I didnt want to be N1less for a while. Any who, I call up HTC and explain my situation and without a prob I take the swap option. So 3 days later or so I recieve my refurbished N1. Everything looked well. I immediately rooted it with Cyan6 back to my old ways. So I go to play Home Run Derby and the screen goes white for a few seconds and I notice the entire screen has a burnt image on it. You can see the notification bar, the 3G symbol and entire keyboard in portrait mode. I start to notice it more browsing web and what not.
My plan is to call HTC on monday and get another phone as I hope it will not be a problem. I am also glad the new rooting methods are much easier then they were and I can just go back to stock. Lets hope they dont give me a prob with my old one...lol I will report back monday
I had the same dust under screen problem with my original Nexus One and called HTC to do a swap about 3 weeks ago. I received refurbished N1 two weeks after I first called and even before I had sent back the original I turned on the swap one they sent me, put my information in, and it rebooted.
Turns out they sent me a refurbished unit that constantly rebooted so much I couldn't even use it
I called again immediately and HTC said that I would need to send the original phone back (w/ the dust problem) and then a week later they will close out the ticket and then I can call again after that to do another swap on the one they sent me that is constantly rebooting :Sigh:
So I call again a week later once they close out the ticket and get a 3rd Nexus sent out to me. Well once I get the 3rd one I turn it on and lo and behold I can't make any calls unless the phone is on speaker mode!!!
I have a baaaaaaaaaad feeling that I'm just going to continually get sent refurbished units that don't work over and over and I'm not quite sure what to do about it
My experience with a swap hasn't been much better.
I sent my n1 for the power button issue and the swap unit I received was in terrible shape.
* screen burn in
* dust under the screen
* dead pixel
* very loose usb port
Needless to say I called and asked for another device.
All I can say is that their incompetence has led me to have 2 n1s now. Sometimes incompetence leads to good things.
Damn this sounds bad. I hope I don't have these issues. I called and they said I have to wait for the ticket to close. Guess ill report back next week

I doubt you will have any problems with the old one. I sent my unlocked rooted phone back for a power button issue. Did a swap, received a refurbished phone and although it appeared to be fine, I tried recording a video and low and behold all I got was static for sound. I called HTC, explained the problem and within a day or so had another phone which has been fine. The unlocked/rooted phone was not a problem and showed service complete on the website.
If you are returning your phone for valid hardware issues, I doubt very much that HTC is going to give you a problem although I guess YMMV. As long as the HTC Website shows as "service complete", you are good to go on the unlocked/rooted device. I would suggest putting the phone back to factory software and unrooted. That's what I did beforehand. You're right about the newer rooting methods, it is a bit of a challenge to root, but well worth the extra time while alleviating the stress of "What If?" when you need warranty service.
Good Luck!
so my last one cleared and they are sending me a new one as we speak. Ill report back mid next week.
and yes it cleared with an unlocked bootloader running Cyan6 morphed up

The ENTIRE keyboard? Man, you must have gotten a phone from a 12 year old girl if they were using the keyboard that much.
Did 3 swaps earlier this year:
- original phone: bad microphone or something
- 1st replacement: really pink screen
- 2nd replacement: horrible reception
- 3rd replacement slightly pink screen (this is the one I kept)
It is possible to keep the original phone and send in the replacement.
Its been over 2 weeks since I sent back the swap device for another and they still haven't sent out another replacement.
Multiple calls to htc support hasn't gotten me anywhere. They've repeatedly said that they would escalate the issue but nothing results from that.
So far, very disappointed with htc support.
I'm probably going to pick up the mytouch 4g just for the tmobile support which is excellent...

Dead/Black Stuck Pixel

Hello,
I recently bought a Desire HD, because my Hero's screen got unresponsive, because of a hardware fault of the screen.
I had a real nightmare with my Hero with the repair center. I had to send it 3 times to them in order to actually accept the problems and to partly fix it. About 2 months after I got it back from this almost 2 months horror the screen became unresponsive and I had to ditch my beloved Hero.
I decided to give HTC one more chance and bought a Desire HD and I was really happy with the device until yesterday when I found out that I have a dead/black pixel on the upper left side (left side of the HTC weather and time widget).
I already tried JScreenFix and another app from the market to fix it and had my phone running on it for more than an hour. But unfortunately this didn't fix anything.
I really like this phone and I decided not to get a Samsung Nexus S. But now I have to say that I am more than disappointed that I didn't.
I called my dealer and he said that he can only exchange the device within 7 days of purchase and that I have to send it to the repair center. I'm so frustrated right now that I am really playing with the idea of selling my Desire HD and get any other phone except an HTC.
If someone can help me, I would be more than happy, because I don't know what I can do anymore.
Thank you in advance!
Cheers!
Best way to remove dead pixels (this might be difficult due to the uni body design) is to take apart the phone leaving the SLCD bare and lightly (I normally use a cotton bud to avoid finger prints and avoid excess pressure) massage the effected area.
Attempt this when powered off first, if that unsuccessful do so when powered on (Boot cycle if necessary).

Most phones have a zero dead pixel warranty just check htcs policy on dead pixels then rma it you should receive a new unit
Alternatively if HTC do have a zero dead pixel policy then kick up a stink to the store manager that according to HTC the manufacturer its faulty and unfit for sale. Complain enough you will be surprised what happens
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Ok, thanks for the swift response.
If I take the phone apart I'll lose my warranty right?
I purchased the phone on 07.12.2010 and I never took any of those apart.
To be honest I'm a bit afraid I might screw up ending with a broken/inoperable device.
Do I also need any special tools to do that? And if yes how much do I have to pay for those?
I really don't want to sell my Desire HD so I am open for any suggestions.
Thanks.
P.S.: What do you think of those pixel repair programs on the market? Are they actually working at all?
Edit: Thanks for the hint, I'll check out their policy asap. I already called my dealer and wait for his call back. I will definitely "kick his ass" when he tries to bulls*it me. Thanks!
I have a dead/stick pixel too. I got it quite a while back and i even made a thread about it here. It was a real annoyance for me but now i just learned to live with it. Mine is right at the bottom center of the screen. I really don't have the patience to send it back to england for repair, and i don't have any confidence in taking it apart so i'll just have to live with it :/
I also tried that Jscreenfix app as well and it did nothing. I really doubt the success rate of those type of apps because my laptop has a dead/stuck pixel too and running a program like jscreenfix did nothing on my laptop either.
Yeah, I've read your topic and I tried to live with it too, but my device is like brand new and I paid a lot of money for it so I see no argument for accepting a faulty part tbh. I didn't buy it from a carrier it's unlocked and has no branding at all.
It's like my company/boss pays me for 1 day less a month just because his pc was broken on that day.
I also don't have any patience at all with the european service center anymore. The experience I made with my Hero was so horrible you can't imagine. I don't wish this even to my worst foe.
I also doubt the success of those apps, but I gave it a try so I can't say that I didn't try as much as possible.
i was just like you dude. bought it unlocked sim free no carrier, and only a few days after owning it the problem showed up. Its a real shame that LCD's suffer from this type of fault.
Yeah and I just called HTC to find out what their policy is, but the guy on the hotline told me that I got blablabla days where I can exchange it and after it I have to send it in for repair.
I'm so pissed now that I'm going to literally kill my dealer on the phone when he calls me back.
Glad I could help and thanks for the "Thank".
Unfortunately the Desire HD is a troublesome device to take apart and I wouldn't recommend doing so unless you have a through understanding of electronics and Uni-body casing, if you do plan on going ahead then your best bet would be to look at this:
http://www.htcphones.net/htc-evo-4g-teardown/
this is an similar phone to the Desire HD that uses a similar layout but different components, a full Desire HD tear down from a reputable website isn't available at this moment.
Depending on the warranty of your device then it may breach the warranty.
The best way to check if it breaches your warranty is to ask the manufacturer about the "conditions of the warranty" or not to break any Warranty Stickers.
As for returning the product, you probably have a better chance in saying the phone doesn't meet the aspect of quality you though it would, your more likely to get a return that way because the dealer isn't taking back a faulty product (Its unlikely they will check the product).
Sigh, I got 2 stuck pixels too... One is at the top left corner (red) and another in the middle region (blue)... Just bought for less than 7 days and they are already there... Stupid HTC policy of more than 3 closely pixel sh*t doesn't help at all... I had been using so many HTC phones and it seems that only DHD gave me stuck pixels... What is wrong with their QC? Damn it... Well, i gave up looking at it and learn to live with it... The only thing that is keeping me with HTC is due to Android + 4.3"... There isn't any other phones providing such luxury... its really pathetic...

If you bought it over the phone or online and are in the UK then you can return it within 7 days for a refund if it is faulty or not. Distance selling rules cover this option.
As for stuck pixels my understanding is that HTC policy is "any three pixels" or "any two joined pixels".
When buying a phone, we often skip the step by step test because we are too eager for the phone that we expect long. Examine the steps necessary minimum:
* LCD Screen
- You for startup phone, startup screen is white color. You look at the different angles to see what is not normal ?
- When the phone was running, you turn on the camera application. You use hand lens cover>>> screen is black. You can observe different colored pixels that do not? if it occurs, it is dead pixels
*Speakers and external speakers (Make a call, listening to music at a volume level to maximum)
*Wireless connections and to try a few sites....
*Squeeze the cover slightly to see if sure?
*..................
Hopefully my experience was helpful for you and sorry for my poor English

I also have one dead pixel mid-right colored green. When I first got it i checked well and it was not there. After a few days it is there.
I bought mine during my business trip to Hong Kong. I went to the shop and asked my dealer to change vthe unit but they said there should be at least four dead pixels in order to change within 7 days. Also they told me to call the htc office but it was weekend and i will be leaving HK on the folllowing monday. so I had no chance but to live with it. I will send an email to Htc to check what they will say.
Guys,
Sorry to sound obvious but have you tried the jscreenfix app (there is an Android version in the market) or similar in order to make sure the pixels are actually dead and not simply stuck? If they are stuck this should repair it. I ran their software via my PS3 after picking up a couple of stuck pixels on my LCD TV and it worked wonders.
Not promising anything but it must be worth ago before resorting to taking it apart/ sending it back. From the comments you do have to let it run a while and maybe on a few occasions, however it should certainly help with coloured pixels (ie green)
To add my 2 cents, when ever i have some kind of issue, i will always make it over the top and add some juicy details when calling any company. For example i will say that my screen starts to loose colors after being on for more then an hour. I know it's not good in a sense, but when something costs 500+ euro, it should work fine for more then few month. In 10 or so years, my stuff was always replaced with a brand new one.
Regards.

This is insurance fraud, its illegal, classed as theft and is causing insurance premiums to raise for the hardworking Joe who legitimately pays for his insurance.

Hello Folks,
sorry for not being able to answer quicker, but I came back late from work and couldn't access the site due to overload until now.
My dealer called me back and I explained everything to him and also told him that I won't send it in for repair again as I had a nightmare with him already with my Hero. He spoke to his boss, called me back and told me that they will make an exemption and change my phone. I am getting a brand new one, I am really excited and very happy and satisfied.
On the other hand I hope that this pixel issue won't happen again.
Lucky me I always keep everything in the package and take care about my gadgets very nicely. I already did a reset, cleaned it and put everything in order into the package like I got it.
I also don't do any insurance fraud and I am also exaggerating on the phone, but tbh honest guys: You can say whatever you want and try whatever is possible, but those guys at the HTC hotline don't give jack **** about your problems. Their answer is always the same and their flexibility in terms of problem solving is literally zero.
About that JScreenFix, I think it might work with stuck/coloured pixels. But dead black pixels can't be repaired with it. The program seems to cycle and cycle through all colours and tries to somehow calibrate the screen/pixels again. But dead pixels seem to be dead. At least that's what I can say about trying it and another application from the market.
But I will definitely check my phone very closely tomorrow upon receipt and will also do this in the future, because it takes like 1% of the time I need compared to waiting in line at any hotline.
Thanks again for all the hints and also for the link how to take it apart. Tbh I got a bit too much respect to do this and also because my phone is 14 days old and got 11,5 months warranty.
Wish me luck that the new one will be flawless and without any problems.
Cheers!
After reading this thread I decided to look and found one , it is purple so does that mean Jscreenfix should hopefully work?
Jscreenfix is absolutely bullsh*t in my opinion. Mine is definitely 2 stuck pixels as they are coloured red and blue, not black... But running it for more than an hour and not helping really makes my hopes dashed...

Phantoms headphones issue?

I have phantom headphones in CM7.
This just came out of nowhere. Everything worked fine an hour ago.
All of a sudden the headphones icon is blinking. The phone thinks it has headphones connected, so it's blocking sound to the phone speaker. But there are no actual headphones involved.
Restarting didn't stop it.
I didn't make any system changes today. There's nothing physically in the headphone plug.
But my phone is suddenly useless as a phone because it thinks headphones are being plugged in and out every second.
Anyone got any idea what the hell is going on?
I reflashed CM and the problem is still there.
I reflashed stock 2.2.1 and the problem is still there. So it's definitely an out of nowhere hardware issue.
And this phone is a warranty replacement that I just got 3 days ago. Awesome.
Does HTC have ANYONE actually doing quality control?
And now T Mobile is sending me yet another refurbished phone. So I get to spend another night reloading all my stuff and tweaking settings. [sarcasm] Awesome. [/sarcasm]

that happened to me too and i just cleaned out the jack and rebootet and bingo. dust and gunk get in there and give you hell. and ive heard bad things about refurbished phones but ive never been able to tell the difference between that and a new one with ones ive had. it probly depends on the place it was its refurbed at.

Can you give me more details on how you cleaned it out?
I've picked at it with a tiny screw driver, put a headphone plug in it and spun it around, and hit it with compressed air.
Nothing seems to make the problem go away. Did you have some kind of awesome technique?
And T-Mobile is losing major credibility with me over this issue. I just bought the phone at the end of August. This is already my 2nd bad one. The T-Mobile guy on the phone told me there would be processing charges for BOTH phones on my next bill after the guy in the store who processed the exchanges specifically told me there would be no cost. And now I'm apparently waiting until November 16th to get the 2nd replacement after the guy in the store told me I'd get it today (next business day) and that's after it took this broken one a week to get to me after the guy in the store told me I'd have it the next day the first time.
When I got to the supervisor at T-Mobile she made it 10 times worse by trying to up sell me the warranty and exchange program saying that's the only way she could have this fixed by tomorrow.
I'm like "It was supposed to get fixed by today for no fees or charges according to the guy who processed the exchange. Now you're telling me you've added fees after the point of sale? And now you want me to agree to another $15 a month so you can get this fixed tomorrow? It was supposed to get fixed TODAY for no fees! I just bought the phone 2 months ago and I'm already waiting on a 3rd model due to the extreme lack of quality control on these POS's. Now you want me to spend more money? Are you high?"
i know!! they tried that crap with me and i said im not waiting a week for your f*** up and walked out. then called htc and they took care of everything because im still under warranty. dont deal with money hungry salesman holding phones hostage for $15 a month.
but i used the same technique as you except i put rubbing alchohol on the swab to clean the contact better. *dont use a jack ass amount of alcohol though*

Well that didn't work. I'm sure there's a short in the electrical system. The battery drains like water through a colander ever since this problem showed up.
But I think the short is internal and not right at the plug. (Which is odd because if I plug in a headset it works fine. I just don't want to carry a headset with me wherever I go.)
The best solution I've found so far is just to turn off the "Display headset icon" in the cyanogen settings so I don't have to look at the damned think blinking, then just use my phone as a text only device until the new one comes on Thursday.
yeah but it sucks that your battery is draining still..but im sure you can tough it out till tomorow

It's torture!
Absolute torture! The CIA should realize they don't have to water board terrorists because of this. They can just take away half the functionality of their smart phones!
I mean it! I'll talk! I'll say whatever they want me to say! Just make my phone work!
Or...send me another borked one. I'm good with that too because I'll trade it as an even exchange for a 4G Slide, give it to my wife, and upgrade her account with a Sensation that I will take.
I think the thing that annoys me is that the one that just broke has the good emmc chip and the good screen. But this random stupid problem. Now I have to play the "Do you get what you paid for or do you get garbage parts" lottery again. And even if I get the good parts I can never rely on the device again because it's reputation is killed with me.
Update: And i came in 50/50 in the new phone lottery. Bad screen but good chip.
Its a sad reality many live with ( look at us complain about our high end phones, we have it so tough...lol)
