Guys seen this?
http://www.clonedinchina.com/2009/08/pictures-of-htc-hero200-leaked.html
That thing look ugly compared to the european htc hero. Guess ill keep my hero even if 3g doesn't work.I got used to it already.
Yeah - I'm glad Australia supports 3G bands with the original Hero
Oh dear lord no! I've been waitng for the Hero and I will get the Hero! Not that piece of crap! Ugh I guess if that comes out on Sprint, I'm going to have to wait for a Rogers Hero so I can at least use 3G.
Please Sprint get the European Hero with the update. T_T
I don't like this one, its so ugly. i like the the hero that i now have the original look and i'm happy with it
I actually don't mind the re-design, I JUST WANT THE CHIN !!!
They call that a Hero???
There is only one real Hero and it's the Eu (white) one!!!
Proud owner of a sim-free white hero!!!
Mm, saw this on Engadget this morning. Can you say ugly!? Glad I have the original
yeah this really looks ugly and boring, but it seems like some carriers are afraid of using anything different than the IPhone formfactor.
i'm also happy to have the white teflon coat hero!
Hopefully thats the crap sprint gets. And the Hero that passed FCC with 850/1900 will be the original.
i really hope this isnt sprint's version of the hero. it does have a sprint look to it so i don't doubt it. maybe the dude who called the hero out for us can justify this.
Oh man... that thing looks so average and boring and a little on the bad side of disstastefull =_=;
What are they thinking? the oringinal hero looks pure sex, but this thing makes the G1 look nice >_<
Is it the market they are trying to apeal to? they some how think gold trim is what the majority of people want..
Maybe it was because many people complaining about the beautiful chin and thus they want to appeal to the mass? I personally love the chin and can't wait to get my hands on the Hero in a few days.
I love the Chin. I want my Chin. Luckily for me i also have the sim free white teflon coated HTC Hero and using with T-mobile US!
This thing is beatiful and all my friends envy me for having it. they either have an iphone or some windowd mobile crap... Nothing compares to the Hero especially after applying the leaked update. This thing is blazing fast!
So disgusting, I want a Hero SO bad, but would like 3G to at least work if I'm spending that much money
I don't like it at all, but is that Battery on lock screen thing a widget that currently exists?

It *is* the Sprint "Hero"

what a disappointment!
I've been waiting months for the hero to come out in the US only to be disappointed! Why would they do this to us!?
If I could buy a Hero in its original design and have it work on the 3G network for TMo, I would definitely buy it rather than Sprint's monstrosity.

How was that ridiculous? He showed exactly what people want when they buy the Evo: larger screen, faster proc, etc. I don't see your point. I mean, I'm glad you're happy with your Hero. It's a great phone. I personally love mine. I'm getting an Evo, though, and will be giving my Hero to my girlfriend. It's much better than her Palm Pre... just as the Evo is much better than the Hero.
Unless, of course, I'm not understanding you. Help me out here.

It's too big? Do you have dwarf hands? Little sausage fingers? Or does it not fit in the pocket of your Garanimals? Seriously, though... I have small hands and it's not too big for me to use. That screen is gorgeous.

i would go that far the hero was already outdated and old technology the day it launched lol. its a cool phone for time being but definitely in the same catagory with mytouch and g1. check out the specs, sprint just needed an android phone cause they didnt have any. i mean cmon dude the moment has a faster processor lol it will do for now but i wouldnt go as far to say i "love it" its ok and it was the best thing on sprint at the time. that is all

keeping hero not ridiculous
I kinda agree with the second post. The evo is a great phone, although I think the video shows basic android users that the hero and the evo have pretty much the same thing. NOW WHILE MOST PEOPLE HERE KNOW THATS DIFFERENT, the idea is that both phones run the stunning htc sense, have the most of the same built in apks, and on the video the hero doesn't move that much slower than the evo.
Advantage to the evo for basic users:
-4G
-better camera
-moves faster and snappier
-images look better because of a higher resolution
-swype keyboard: although anyone will be able to get this eventually
-FRONT FACING CAMERA
-BIG OL BAD SCREEN
-more storage space for apps
Disadvantages:
-4G not really existant for users outside of big cities-and most of the big cities wont get 4G till later this year.
-CAMERA has more megapixels but takes not so great pics according to reviews
-new phone= bugs, some still being worked on
-swype can be brought to any phone, and probably will soon
-some people think the screen is TOO BIG.
so for me the basic advantages are matched by the disadvantages. So I'm fine sticking with my hero. The evo is better, yes. the front camera-cool. But i don't like the size and I don't get 4G, so I'm better off waiting off a while, as hard as that can be for people who love shiny new phones with awesome specs.
i'm good with my hero for now

No, but if I wanted to serve cheese off that platter, I could! Hoers d'oeuvres, anyone?
I went by Radio Shack the other day and I didn't like the way it fit in my hand. But then again I felt the same way with my Hero because I had come from a phone that was probably 2" wide or something. After seeing the video I wouldn't mind getting one, but I'm sure they will release a better one hopefully with Android 3.0 and a dual core processor, so I will wait until then and see where I am financially. Also paying $10 extra for 4G is crazy. They should give us the option of upgrading to 4G if we live in a city were it is offered.
I don't disagree with you on any particular point. The $10 increase is BS unless they tell me they're getting 4G in my area and that fee is to cover installation. And there's always going to be a better phone. It's a fact.
...and I'll probably get that one too. >.>
LOL at you, yea you. I do that comparison everyday w my wifes hero, and the performance difference its so big its not even funny, and hers is OC. No comparison. And you would love the screen size if you ever typed in an Evo, specially coming from a Hero.

I'd like to see a video of the Evo vs. the Hero running Darch 2.7 (and eventually Froyo). No version of Sense on the Hero is as fast as Darch's AOSP. Yes, the Evo would still win but the Hero would certainly hold it own.

doesnt matter, the hero is like a tricked out honda, no matter what parts or software you program it with its stll gonna be a honda. The evo is more like a benz, it comes factory with everything you need and imagine and will be even better with aftermarket parts, i dont know why u guys think it even stand a chance, once aosp is on the evo its over for any phone with android you throw at it. the hero was dead the day it launched with its weak ass processor and unimpressive hardware specs. the chip it has in it is the same one used in the weak g1 and weak mytouch. in one month i will have my evo and im more than happy to sell this hero piece of **** on here of ebay for 40 bucks lol. its in perfect condition as i have never taken off my full body zagg invisishield. death to hero until we all get evos

Hard to disagree with any of your points. A tricked out Honda S2000 is pretty badass though
Also, seeing as I live outside of a 4G zone, giving Sprint $120/yr more for the privilege of owning an Evo just doesn't sit right. Enjoy your new toy though, it is a work of art.

You speak so negative of the Hero, yet you bought it. If it was/is a piece of crap, why did you buy it?
SO.. as the title says... is the Hero worth buying now?
Also, I`ve read here about some problems with the touch screen that suddenly appear... is that a general issue or just some isolated incidents?
The phone is over a year old now, the CPU is a generation older than the other Android devices with the 1GHz Snapdragon processor. I'm sure the phone manufacturers are preparing the next generation devices for later in the year - making those phones obsolete.
If you're after a cheap device then you should be able to get a Hero second hand for a decent price. If you're willing to root and try new ROMs then there is still a decent community for the Hero - otherwise you'll be stuck on Android 2.1 if you stick with the official updates. The Hero is highly unlikely to get any more updates from HTC.
If your budget allows for a newer phone, then you'd be better off getting a more powerful Android device.
Thanks, I too think that it`s a little old, but it has a fairly good price, almost the same as Wildfire here, where I live, but that qvga screen on the Wildfire is a let down for me.
Alex~ is bang on, it is cheap, and the community on here is great, so if your gona be using custom roms then go for it. But I wouldn't like to say how many devs will still bother with us after Xmas.
If you can put up ur budget, do that.

Tru, there are better phones available if buying new, but it's more than competent if second hand.
I'll be about till May 2011 with my hero anyway, as my contract expires then. And even then, the hero is popular enough to merit continued support i reckin.
Hi I just bought one off eBay about a month old for £150 took a bit time to root and get used to Android, but worth it and its ok for price with lots of features. Although I think I now should have gone for HTC Legend?

Not to mention that there is no other Android phone with as cool appearance as that of a black Hero (the european version, not the US Sprint's ugly cousin). I held the Desire in my hands and played with it a bit, but although it was blazingly fast, it didn't strike me as something I'd want.
What I will want next year is a Hero-shaped phone with modern hardware.
Would not recommend ebay.
Three are selling reconditioned £159.99 with £10 credit and can be unlocked from ebay for £6.50. Also £12 cashback if you go through Quidco.
Hope this helps.
Well the community for it is quite huge. Ofc it will slim when others move to newer phones, but I guess there are folks who got a 2 year contract (me being one of them, hehe )

they've released the htc wildfire which is very much just a repackaged hero... i have no idea why they did it. it lacks all the style and class of the hero and only has an fm radio to make up for it.
Well if you root your Hero and overclock it, it pretty much becomes a Legend. Without the better screen and slimer profile. I want the Desire but got the HTC Hero this year because it just looked awesome (unfortunately Canadian carriers screw you over with 3 year contracts instead of two ) but I do love my Hero as it is my first smart phone and I love the 'chin'.
It is a matter of preference so the choice in the end is yours, but we do have Feeyo .
The design really stands out yea. People are always like "hey, what kind of phone is that?" while my brother gets none and has a desire

I get that a bit. Although the only smartphone that really has any recognition here in NZ is the iPhone. I imported my phone as we don't even have a decent range of Android phones (at reasonable prices). I mean... we JUST got the Nexus One which Google just stopped selling? lol.
But I only recently got my hero (a month ago now?) and i'm happy with my purchase. I mean... there's other purchases that could be had. I almost got a Milestone but the keyboard really put me off (played with my mates', it was a terrible keyboard.. the buttons are so stiff it isn't funny). I mean... I noticed a price drop of the Milestone shortly after I purchased my Hero but.. Eh, I can't complain. Bigger screen/higher res would've been nice though. Specs aren't really much more to write home about though.
Hero was reasonably priced, looks good, performs well enough. My only real annoyances about it are: No official Froyo, smaller screen/lower-resolution than others, can't run some newer games which i probably wouldn't play much anyway.
I'll probably upgrade next year when I have lots of money
Okay so i'm curious does anyone think they will come out with a white version of the Epic4g like a month after its released like they did with the Evo and ILame? I haven't heard any news on a White Vibrant or Captivate so its doubtful but i do suppose this is possible as it is the Samsung Galaxy S Pro
My money is on never.
That'd be awesome if they did make one, but I doubt it and waiting an extra month for a phone this awesome isn't worth it being a different color, just buy a case or put skins on it or something.
They won't make one, no other Galaxy S has any colors announced and Samsung doesn't operate like HTC. Sprint can tell HTC to make a rainbow colored Evo and they'd just nod and make some because that's what they do, they special order custom made phones for different carriers. Samsung and it's Galaxy S series, they take stuff like this much more seriously and will want them to look the way they want to not the carrier.

Thats not exactly true...there is a White Galaxy S coming to a carrier in Spain...so its not like it didn't happen..how likely it is for the Epic 4g though is another story.

Samsung has been making customized phones for Sprint for a LOONNGGG time. They two companies have the longest running partnership of any manufacturer on the Sprint network. All Sprint has to do is ask Samsung and they will (literrally) ship a few dozen engineers from Korea and start cranking out phone prototypes at Sprints Kansas headquarters.
If you dont believe how far Samsung is willing to customize their phones, just look at their Galaxy S lineup in the US. All have the basic core functionalities the same, however, their external designs/features/content/software are all different. This is just the 4 carriers, Samsung is scheduled to release their Galaxy S line up in 110 carriers worldwide. That is a massive amount of engineers, designers, QC workers in force.
So what do people think now? I am personally swayed to buy the Desire Z, but I would like to see what other people think.
Having watched http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly4C0TXmnlQ, I am pretty impressed by htcsense.com (for the off days that I forget my phone!). The maps app isn't really that smooth...the demo showed it being quite laggy on the Desire HD.
Build quality is great, performance seems smooth, keyboard looks fantastic (no numbers row though =[ ) and the screen looks crisp.
edit: maybe I should have also posted on the Desire HD forum! =P

i've been fed up with windows mobile for about a year now with my HTC Blackstone...it's simply too old and dated an OS. And WinPho & is simply too locked down and not as flexible as I'd like it to be (I'm so sick of those tiles!).
Android looks like the way to me...and *if* I do want to load up my phone with something bloated and pretty, then I will use the HTC Sense bundled in with that phone...which is tons better than the HTC Sense on Windows Mobile.
The Desire Z looked great to me. Perfect size, build quality is on point, gorgeous keyboard, and very fast. I hope the G2 is the same color as the Desire Z, the G2 looks a bit lighter from the renders on T-Mobile's site.
The Desire HD was a bit of a let down to me. First off, it's not HD. A 4.3 inch screen needs a better resolution than 800x480. The colors on the screen look incredibly washed out compared to the Desire Z. Also is it true that the HD only has a 1250mAh battery?!
Can't wait to get the G2. Goodbye Vibrant.

Looks like HTC have pulled that video off their Youtube account. I wonder why
I am eager to see how the MSM7230 800MHz performs compared to the 1GHz Snapdragon that sits in my Nexus currently. But I already know I will be pre-ordering the Desire Z ASAP. I have been waiting for a high-end qwerty Android phone from HTC for so long. Cant believe its finally here, and its *almost* everything I wanted..
I am a bit annoyed at HTC though, because they have a tendency to do this. The Desire HD has a great unibody construction which gives the phone that extreme high-end feel to it, while the Desire Z is left with a combination of aluminium and plastic finish. Why, I don't know. Also wish they would have put some aluminium love on the keyboard as well, but at least the keyboard looks good otherwise.
Those are probably my only concerns regarding the Desire Z (that, and the lame name). I hope the Z mechanism lasts as well though and wont get sluggish over time.
Anyway, its as close to perfect for me as any other phone has ever been so Im picking it up anyways. Just wish HTC would stop holding back when launching new phones. If the MSM7230 800MHz performs well then Im relieved, but if not then I will be mad at HTC for not going for the 1GHz version instead. The MSM7230 has the Adeno 205 GPU, but since Android doesn't support GPU acceleration I guess we wont get much joy from it.
Now Im just waiting for pre-orders here to show up!

is GPU acceleration something that modders can address? also, I'm curious what the GPU does when its not being utilized for acceleration. isn't the very definition of a GPU that its a graphics accelerator? is it that Android uses it for some things like games and video, but not others, like scrolling and webpage rendering?
also, rumor has it that Android 3.0 will implement graphics acceleration, so for a good portion of the time you have your G2 you should enjoy said acceleration (for the record, yes I believe the G2 will be definitely be upgradeable to Gingerbread)

Haha same here. This is the qwerty device I've been waiting for!
After I watched the videos I actually got the impression the Desire Z had better build quality than the Desire HD did. I didn't see any brushed aluminum on the HD but it's all over the Z. Reporters even said that most of the Desire Z is made of metal (aluminum) and looks amazing. The HD looked just like the Evo 4G to me, which feels sturdy in hand, but doesn't have that fancy brushed aluminum finish to it.

Well, regardless of what you think you see, the HD is unibody (meaning its body is made out of one piece of aluminium) and the front is largely made out of glass...
Of course Im basing all this on what Ive heard and seen rather than my personal experience as I havent touched any of these yet. The Desire Z is made out of aluminium and plastic, while the z-hinge is supposedly made out of some sort of metal.. according to a HTC spokesperson, some kind of strong alloy. So at least it seems they have done a good job with that mechanism which is great news, as the Touch Pro and Touch Pro 2 tends to get jerky after a while!
I am basically sold on the G2 at this point. I have been a loyal Verizon customer for over 6 years. A year ago I never would have thought of leaving...but in the last 6 months, I have been running all the Donut/Eclair/Froyo builds on my aging HTC Vogue (KUDOS to DZO, Myn, Incubus26jc and the whole Android Vogue group, their work is amazing) and even an imperfect Donut is better than WinMo. Running their modded ROMS has sold me on stock Android.
Not at all interested in WinPho 7...it looks lame and locked up. I was going to stick with Verizon, but kluging Bing on the Fascinate was the last straw. Any carrier that would do that does not care about Android at all...or their customers. Sense is the only UI I'd consider using...but even Sense is losing steam. Gingerbread is going to blow it away, I think.
At any rate...Tmo seems the only carrier interested in delivering the pure Android experience. They have better plans...and this new phone is going to be amazing, with lots of dev support.
I'm sold...goodbye Verizon.
If you think about it the new sense w/landscape is already developed for Desire Z so it should be a quick port and we would have the new sense and stock. I like to switch back and forth and the keyboard and HSPA+ are very tempting.
My thoughts after the announcement is I want an HTC Desire HD.

Good choice. The G2 is definitely going to bring attention to T-Mobile. I think people are getting tired of all these Touchwiz/Motorblur phones and want Stock android. Like you said it seems that only T-Mobile cares about this. Verizon only cares about money and exploits Android to fill their pockets.

lol well, make no mistake, t-mobile cares just as much about making money as verizon does. they're just trying to carve out a niche in the market for "with google." that's their selling point for the G2. verizon's selling point is their network, which I think we can all agree is the best (in terms of coverage). they don't need to exploit a niche market because they're super mainstream, so they have the luxury of adding even more to their bottom line by making deals with companies like microsoft, i.e. the Bing deal
seems that the Desire Z and HD haven't won over everybody...but it is still quite popular (this is the Desire Z forum afterall)...I was thinking of buying it on the play.com website...but does anyone know if they do free shipping to Australia?

Sucks for them. Those people won't be happy until the first dual-core 1.5Ghz phone with 400ppi and built in toaster gets announced. Even though they could not use that kind of speed...
Why don't you go on their website and see?

don't be to sure of verizon's network being that great - a) the more users on a network, the slower the network and that is the down side to verizon's network - they sell that network too well. But b) as far as coverage, don't underestimate Tmo's network or partnership carriers. Every year i travel with a couple of partner company reps to visit suppliers & clients in upstate Vermont (2 miles south of the canadian border), northwest texas, new mexico & oklahoma. One is with verizon & the other on AT&T (yeah i know AT&T is weak), but whenever we're somewhere rural, the verizon phone drops all bars while my tmo still has 1-2 - leaving Derby, VT and heading south, we're talking a 90 - 100 mile stretch that's pretty desolate going into low foothills - but the last time, my verizon buddy had to use my phone to finish a 20 minute call.
we've gone thru this 3 years running, whether we're in VT, New Mex, Tx or Oklahoma and every year he comments he needs to look at Tmo for his company. While Tmo may not own the entire network, they've been smart in partnering with a lot of the small carriers.
FYI
hi...
friend
the device is good...
After searching around for a smartphone and not wanting an iPhone, i went for the HTC Hero over the others from HTC, and am loving it.
The overall look of the device is a bit Marmite-esque. The jutting lip and functional appearance certainly won't see it winning any style awards, but at the same time it's well laid out and fits comfortably in the hand, with the extra coating on the back making it harder for it to slip to the ground.
what you have from htc????
Dude your aware that the phone is at the end of its cycle/life right?
It was a great device first android I owned but its dying man. After they finish the gingerbread thats it even the devs will probably abandon it if they haven't already...
Sorry to rain on your parade but its the truth.

He's probably right, but I do hope you enjoy the Hero it is still quite a good little device.
I bought mine half a year ago because it was one of the cheapest cool looking phones and with "FROYO 2.2.1 Final Android Stock / Special Edition Final (AOSP)" it works like a charm. I am not sure if I even switch to Ginger (for the moment mostly unstable, at least for me) and it does not have any feature that I really need. Plus adding ADW Launcher I can customize like I need it...still lovin´it
From what I think it is the best customizable phone Long live hero ...woohoo
Sent from my Hero using XDA App
Well, it is true, the phone is at the end of its live cycle / support but I still enjoy it especially with the Elelinux-7.0.0-RC4-Hero-v1.6 ROM (soon to be updatet to 1.7)

You have no idea how jealous I am at the figure displayed in your speedtest results. Living in the sticks in Yorkshire I am lucky to get 3.5mb/s
Fancy southern data transfer!
Yeh very good device, I brought one back from the dead with a screen replacement and whacked gingerbread on it and its running great
T-mob phoned me for my upgrade about 6months ago and I refused... thats how happy i am with this fone! And to b fair the desire, incredible etc will only bring more speed n bigger size, which don't get me wrong IS important, but as a smartphone the Hero does it all. (mind you the Hero did not have native multitouch, Google navigation, Leap, voice search etc etc when it first shipped, so kudos for the update) but nonetheless the Hero is an iconic fone that launched both HTC and Android to its success they're now enjoying. Will stick it out with the Hero until at least 12th April!!!

Well, recently my internet has dropped to about 5MB/s at peak times and Ping's take years. Virgin say it's a 'fault', I think they just have too many people using the line. 3.5MB/s isn't bad, I used to get 1.5MB/s with my ADSL provider though, I live miles from the exchange so your's is pretty good!
