Keyboard malfunction - String outbut on keypress - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hi, I´ve just bought my first smartphone, a HTC TyTN.
It´s bee used, in good condition, except that the keys [I,K and M] on the pad are not functioning correctly. The TyTN was very cheap and the previous owner told me about this problem.
When I is pressed the string "tyui" appears
When K is pressed the string "qwerghjk" appears
When M is pressed the string "asdfvbnm" appears
It´s always exactly the same string, same with Shift or Tab.
I was wondering if this is a hardware malfunction or software. Could it be that the keys are programed to type the string on key press?
By search I didn´t find anything. I did find this thread and solution (post#3) but as I´m a new Windows Mobile user I don´t know exactly what that will do.
I´ve installed a registry editor, but I don´t know where or what to edit.
Any thought?

Almost certainly a hardware problem.
In my view there is pressure being put on the top left corner of the keyboard.

(or with reference to the photo below - somewhere near where you see the screw holder on the right side)
Think of it this way, when you press those letters you will find it approximately enters all (or most) of the letters trailing off to the top left corner. So, when pressing those keys it is also putting pressure progressively along the keys until it reaches the one you are pressing.
You could dismantle and check that the keyboard is seated properly. Quite a big dismantle though and it could lead you into even more problems. If you feel lucky then dismantling guides are here:

Thanks for the A+ reply
I doubt that I will dismantle it. I use the onscreen keyboard more or less anyway. But it´s always better to have everything functioning correctly.

Possible to change the size of phone buttons ?

Hi,
The P3600 is a terrific device, even more since GPS is active. But, there is one minor annoyance with it : the phone app. Its keys are really too tiny to be used with a thumb.
I am wondering if there is a way to change the look of this phone app and make the keypad buttons larger. I've looked around Google and other sites for an answer to my question, but couldn't find anything. Maybe somebody here can help ?
Thanks a million in advance.

You can install a dialpad, at the upgrade and modifying section, search for smartdial + eten. It has some big and nice dialpads or just download it from here.
http://paulya.com/dialerskins.htm
Just install and restart.
Thanks a lot ! I found the topic you are reffering to, but there's no hint on where to get my hands on that famous dialpad. Maybe a little extra help, please ?
EDIT : Found it, OK -- forgot to mention
Another great way of making the pocket pc more usable with one hand! Thanks a lot for this advice, using it now and it works perfectly!!
I only wish there would be some similar type of large keypad for writing text messages as well, anyone has any clue? The one I´m using now (Phonepad) is not nearly as good and doesn´t have equally large keys, which would help.
Thanks!
For the large keyboard, there's SPB Full Screen Keyboard

Only twist is that is always displays in landscape... But very usable though.
you can also use SPB Full Screen Keyboard in Portriat mode... the only downside is that the keys are narrower to fit the screen. i use it in Portriat mode...

hardware button problem; button 2

the internet explorer iconed button, on the top left hand corner; Button 2
is kinda playing up
It seems it is almost permanently pressed, though it doesn't seem stuck, when it is enabled the shortcut program or function continues to run; e.g. pie keeps starting (I've tried changing the shortcut and there's the same effect on any function I set to the button)
I've done a hard-reset, changed rom, but it persists, so its definitely a hardware fault. The main problem with it is, even if I minimize PIE for example, the hardware buttons remain unusable unless i unassign everything from that button.
I've tried cleaning where i can etc. but to no avail
its not a huge problem, heck it doesn't really matter if I need to keep that button without function, its just one of those little annoying and niggly problems, and maybe someone else has had the same and found a solution
if not its ok, and thank for reading

The above picture shows the two micro-switches (Silver blocks with round black protrusions). It would be well nigh impossible to dismantle these - replacement may be possible, though I suspect you would only be able to buy the board complete.
You say you have tried cleaning. Do you mean externally or internally. It may be possible that the micro switch is not releasing due to a detritus build up internally or some misalignment of the pasic facia switch cover. The micr-switches even when pressed via the facia plastic should give a discernable soft click when pressed.
Mike
firstly thank you very much, for all your effor, its well appreciated my friend.
I've tried cleaning externally only and yes it probably is a buildup of dirt internally, but I don't think I'll be dismantling the device as its only a small proble, and once I've removed the assigned function from that button its not problematic. But if it gets worse, starts again etc. I'll have to, so thanks very much.
Thank you.
No probs. Might just start working again by itself if the blockage gets dislodged.
Mike

Not so dead keyboard

I was at a party the other night and someone dripped water off the side of a beer can into my Hermes. It landed on the keyboard, I have inspected the board and cant see anything amiss (IE, it looks good)
but the keys behave erratically.
Heres a list of funky keys.
The left softkey presses the OK key.
The right softkey does the specified function twice so if its a menu it will appear then dissapear.
The "o" key types an "o" then presses the left arrow key(as in to go left a character)
The Windows key presses the right softkey with the same effect as the softkey.
The left arrow does the same as the "o" key.
The down arrow presses the "p" key and the down arrow so if its autocomplete
it will do it with a word beginning with "p".
The right arrow presses the return key.
Whats the best thing to do now?
I have checked all the connections and all seems OK
I dont really want to pull the white backing off the keydomes.
Anyone had any luck with keyboard repair?
Someome please show me the light as Im running out of things to think of
All the best and thanks in advance.
Mark
//Edit
Im running Schaps WM6.1 ROM
Second time I have ran it, went from Schaps to S64 WM 6.1 then back to Schaps ROM
Didnt have issues the first time but I have issues now,
I would like for someone to clarify for me if this is software or hardware?

Well i agree that peeling off the backing is a tricky business. You could trycleaning off the surface with pure slcohol or distilled water but the danger is that it may cause any contamination to seep in even further. You could try to identify any spots where penetration under the white layer has occurred and particularly any of the exposed contact areas (not covered by the white layer and clean those areas.
Otherwise it would be a case of removing the white layer:

Thanks for the prompt reply, just about to go shopping, will try this later and post the results
Thankyou Mike

[CLOSED/G2] Soft Touch Keys are all different!

Anybody else notice that on the soft touch keys, the ones at the bottom of the screen on the g2, the home and the back keys are swapped places from a N1...Just thought I would point that out! Sorry I have a Nexus one and was surprised....but now after checking out all the other phones all of them have different layouts, even the droid x, droid incredible and the droid are all different layouts!!
Take a look for yourself....

It would probably take me quite some time to get used to that from my nexus...i think this is an odd thing to do personally, but it does match the g1 good
Similar positioning to the G1. The keys on the G1 from left to right are [Call] [Home] [Menu] [Back] [End]. I'm not so happy that those are soft keys, and Call and End are no where to be found.
Trust me, doesnt take that long. Change android phones thrice, all with different combinations.
Haha, theres what, 4(square) = 16 possible combinations and I guess manufacturers are out to use them all!
TBH, I much prefer this to Windows Pho 7's three button combination. SOme of those designs look a world of tacky.
Yeah this is current line up of almost all newer android phones. The two softkeys next to the app drawer are best used for call button and you can end call the call directly from notification bar no matter your location on the screen. It takes some getting used to (my current phone, the MTS is just like this in terms of set up) but is just as comfortable after a while.
keys are just like the mytouch also. my search button also pulls up quick response

Just to be pedantic, it's not 4^2, but rather 4!, or 24, combinations of four buttons in four possible spaces.
I stand corrected . Should freshen up my probability and stats!
I do infact miss the G1 Keyboard layout, so far I enjoyed a dedicated button for numbers. So far I havent seen it and many people complained about it, oh well. I cant wait for this phone to come out just to root this.
its super annoying! but after a day or 2 you will get used to it; i have atleast..
it seems a lil out of place but can tell till i get the phone and mess with it.
but couldnt the buttons also be remapped with software then re icon with a skin/screen cover

[TIP] Move your keyboard to the bottom

Hello
I was making one application that would resemble more Android-like design: keyboard on the bottom, the main soft keys above it.
Well that is not possible to do both system-wide, but one half of that is. To move your keyboard to the total bottom of the screen, just edit registry:
Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sip:
DefaultMenuBarHeight=dword:0
MenuBarHeight=dword:0
what happens after reboot is this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Advantages? Extra 64px (on WM6.5.3 and similar) of screen, no useless soft keys in these occasions.
Now, how do you hide the keyboard? Just, as on Android, press BACK key (on HD2 tested, TP2 and TD2 should work the same I suppose, but make backup first ).
Regards, OndraSter
Update: it seems that it doesn't work on all ROMs. I was using CRACIN's HD2 ROM, where it worked. I now flashed GTX Energy ROM and it doesn't work. Weird.
There is no DefaultMenuBarHeight in Sip there is only MenuBarHeight.
I'm using htc touch2. How can i do this? Thanks
This is dependant on the ROM and SIP itself. Try changing the MenuBarHeight itself if it isn't enough.
Btw, this won't work with any newer position fix - like ultrashot's uTask, since it tries to fix the keyboard too.
Heyi tried to change the MenuBarHeight and it was okey then but pressing back button make me go to the homescreen so it isn't for me. Thanks anyway dude great job.
Appearantly Touch 2 works different than Leo
You're right !
Having disabled Utask's position fix feature, I was able to move the SIP vertical position to anywhere I wanted !
The DefaultMenuBarHeight value can be manually added (I did), provided it has any actual effect.
Unfortunately, the Back button generally applies to the current app rather than to the keyboard, that sometimes even stays open (it actually depends on the app ! ), so it can't be used straight on.
But there are a lot of alternatives, such as remapping a hardware key with AEButton plus (now freeware), for instance.
This nice trick should probably be best used with a SIP featuring it's own closing button, such as FingerKeyboard (though it already has an option to overlap the softkeybar in landscape mode, and since it's fully customizable, you should be able to setup the vertical offset in portrait too, regardless of the actual registry values).
