Chaps,
My other half uses her O2 xda Exec with a work supplied 3G vodafone SIM. It works fine in the UK and she did a good job getting it set up with the right 3G UK vodafone settings etc- well done her!
Question is...
She's now working in the USA for a few days. The xda has found a network and can use it - great stuff but no 3G....
How can she determine what network its using over there - is this selectable somewhere (I couldn't find the option)?
Based on the network what would the settings be to allow her to use 3G!? Anyone help?
Thanks
USA doesn't have 3G. It's also why the universal isnt popular in USA. I feel sorry for em.

Oh bugger! You mean we're ahead of America on something!?
I can't believe silicon valley doesn't have 3G, I guess they have wireless hotspot all over....
T-Mobile US have mumbled something about enabling UMTS "in 2006" but I rather want to see it than hear about it.
The rest of the US carriers use fancy 1xRTT data protocols over CDMA networks - not compatible with GSM. People in the US still wonder what the "G" stands for ;-)
Blame it on our military. Those bands are owned by the US Gov. Just recently I have heard news of businesses getting access to those bands. And there was much rejoicing...
who ever said the us doesn't have 3G?
i live in houston and when i got the universal i did some reaserch:
i found that verison wireless has 3G on their devices, but they dont use sim cards, so they wont help...
but i now have cingular wireless, and it works great, but it is a bit pricy...
i believe about $45 per month...
so if you were just going to visit the us, then i would sugest to you that you go with t-mobile using the GPRS,
yes i know it is slow, but if you are only going to be using it for a little bit i think it would be fine. I believe the GPRS is $19.99.
so it really depends if you really think you need the 3G service...
if you dont think so then get GPRS, the exec can use it, and its not all that bad
It is true that the US does not have 3G but your Tri-Band GSM device will work perfectly fine. With the proper settings you can even surfe the WEB at 32k just no high speed for things like video calls.
I use my Exec quite often in various places in the US without any problems.
Did anyone get chance to test HD with 3G on North America network?
The reason I am asking because I am willing to change my old i-mate to HTC HD and I am worry that device will not work with 3G network.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated
Dont bother no support for 3G in the US only Edge.

Why yes, the HD works great on all the 3G networks here in the US that support 900/2100 MHz.
Which is none.

They Made it clear to the public that the were not going to do such a thing. I live in Florida, I imported mine anyway, just cause.
I must say though, I also have the g1 which supports 3g and I don't notice that much of a speed difference because Opera mobile does such a kick ass job of rendering web pages.
Though, if your intertainment relies heavily on Youtube vids, than don't get the HD unless you have plentiful Wifi networks around.
I love my touch HD, the lack of US 3G don't really translate to much.
I hope you find this helpful

Thank you for your great explanations I’m using it mainly for emails, so I guess I can use it anyway doesn’t matter if I am using 3G or edge network.
Then I will try to get it on Monday.

I am very confused here, many people are saying that the HD does not support Northern American 3G speed. And again some websites say it does. boygeniusreport.com say that it does.
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/12/19/htc-touch-hd-easter-egg-att-compatible-3g-bands/
if you go to htc.com and look up the frequencies it says
HSDPA/WCDMA:
*
Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz
* Up to 2 Mbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps down-link speeds
Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE:
*
Europe/Asia: 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
(Band frequency, HSUPA availability, and data speed are operator dependent.)
AT&T 3G networks operates on 850 and one more 1800 or 1900 not so sure. I also called htc and asked them if it will operate on AT&T 3G network and they said yes. Some posts online say that supposing it does not function on US 3G network you may be able to tweek the phone to a certain frequency..What do you guys think? I am so close in getting the HD, but i do not want to get a phone that does not work on AT&T 3G network
Any help would be much appreciated.
IT DOES NOT WORK ON AT&T 3G NOR ON ANY US 3G FOR THAT MATTER. I loved my HD but got tired of waiting and waiting if someone could open the usa 3G and had to admit to myself that the Iphone 3G is indeed the best phone out there. As much as i would say i hated the iphone i was completly wrong in saying this. So if you live in the us and use the internet and like games do yourself a favor and go the same route.

dude, stop telling people to get the iphone. people here are adults, and dont want a little kids toy. jeez, take your iphone and go to the iphone forums
yeeeh ..tell me this..why the hell would i want to get a phone that just not take video, no bluetooth file transfer, no copy..and much more..
its just amazing how stupid people are to fall in love in a stupid phone like that.
I got an HD yesterday and have it on AT&T and I have to say I'm really impressed. I'm going to put it side by side next to my Fuze tonight and see what kind of a hit 3G speed does to it but I didn't feel it was any slower than my Fuze on 3G going onto the net... YouTube was a bit slower to load initially but I didn't get it to play YouTube. The screen resolution is so high it really reminds you how poor YouTube quality video tends to be
oh and of course, there is no 3G on the HD
using operamini (best browser imo) there is almost no difference in speed. i only notice the lack of 3g when downloading big files or streaming youtube. i have wifi readily available in most places, so not a big problem. i cant imagine the battery life with 3g, so maybe its a good thing we dont have 3g
With the same network (HSDPA 2100), I've noticed that I can browse faster using my HD as a modem with my laptop; I think that the device is sometimes slower itself in displaying internet pages using opera.
about the 3G Network for North America, I can see
I have in the phone - options - BAND these:
1. UMTS (2100) + GSM (900+1800)
2. UMTS (850+1900) + GSM (850+1900)
3. UMTS (800+2100)
4. UMTS (850+2100) + GSM(900+1800)
5. UMTS (850) + GSM(900+1800)
and I can't see WCDMA (UMTS) 900 Mhz
Is there someone who have really tested the Blackstone under the following bands:
HSDPA-UMTS 800-850-900 Mhz
------------------------
HTC HD
ROM 1.13.401.0 (20428) ITA date 10/25/08
radio version 1.09.25.14
protocol 52.49a.25.26U
Will the Australian version work on US 3G. I have been reading the their version operates on same US 3G frequencies
if...
if i had a dollar for every thread on the Touch HD and the US networks...
turns out ill just have 6 dollars...
search please before posting this... or moderators please make this sticky...
Also, try the skyfire browser on the Touch HD.... (u will have to dig the forums for the alpha build that supports the screen resolution), the text isnt as sharp as opera... but so much faster.. in my tests... about 2.5 times faster than opera... (not opera mini) ... and browse to a youtube video... and then to break, or others.

Whoa whoa im sorry you get your feelings hurt so easy. It is my opinion, i loved the hd i really did but i also love 3G, being able to see my phone in sunlight, not having to finger tip/finger nail touch and i also love having games. Trust me i didn't want to get rid of the HD but now i dont regret it. I used to hate on the iphone ALOT to. And yes i dont have bluetooth transfers but i do have video. Once windows mobile makes improvements maybe i will go back to an HTC. Now if i wasn't in the usa and the 3G worked where i was i prob wouldn't have an iphone now. Also $199.00 Iphone 3G> $700 HTC HD Edge. And im not big iphone crazy person just made more scince. And also im sorry i should have said in my first post "a JAILBROKEN iphone is the best phone out right now."
Anyways back to the topic. What about the Aus version did that ever come out with us 3G bands????

If it has at least 1 of the usa 3G bands (850,1900) and you live in an area that uses the band the phone has then yes it will work. My guess would be that if it does have usa 3G its going to cost an arm and a leg.
I am alarmed at the following article :
http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/07/atandt-slowing-edge-to-force-customers-to-switch-to-3g/
I know there is still ambiguity about whether it is a hardware limitation or something that can be done in software, but if this holds true.. i may have to give up the best phone I have ever owned.
That doesn't really make sense, considering the fact that where I live, I don't get 3G coverage anyways...
I've seen no such slowing from my HD. I purchased the HD after an experiment with the US version of the Diamond last year. I had used the UK Diamond since it came out in June and then purchased the US version to get the 3G speed. I rarely saw the H or 3G indicator on my US Diamond, I received Edge service in more than 95 percent of the places I travelled during the period of my experiment. I returned the US Diamond to Best Buy and resumed using the UK version until I got my hands on the HD in late November.
The HD works fine for me without 3G. I can use Wifi when I need it.
I agree... 3G coverage is spotty at best in the States and I've had good performance with EDGE for AT&T on my HD... Admittedly I'm usually in a WIFI hotspot at work so EDGE is only for when I'm on the road but still no complaints.

your worry is real. but it won't come true for a long time -- your phone will last till you switch to a new one.
reading the replies below your post, and the original article (which I also read a few days ago). there seems to be some misunderstanding, i will try to explain, and then address your worry. I will use simple terms, although may should foolish (ie. point 1)
- faster the frequency, the faster the battery drains, because the signal oscillates faster. 850 times a second verses 1900 times a second. for those not familiar with signal, just htink of your phone vibrating 850 times a second or 1900 times a second. the latter kills more battery.
- the higher the frequency the less penetration ability it has.
- frequency is freqency, antenna is antenna. an antenna tuned to 850 MHz frequency can transmit 850 MHz signals, simple enough? but the signal may be modulated differently hence the difference between a 2G and 3G 850 band. so you need different hardware to decode and demodulate the two signals, even though the frequency is the same.
- what AT&T's article is saying, is that. they are not going to add extra towers to broadcast 850 3G signals. rather, they are converting 850 2G towers to broadcast 3G 850 signal. This saves them tons of money, because they only need to, for illustration purposes, flip some switches to modulate a 3G signal, instead of purchasing and deploying the towers, since the existing towers are already tuned to 850 MHz.
so yes, when this "fliping switch" operation is done. phones without 850 3G band will only be able to operate on 1900 signals, hence battery drains faster and worse signal indoors.
but back to my first paragraph, judging from AT&T's past records, it would take them a year or two to finish this operation. so .. at least for me. by the time, i will be moving on to a new phone, and i will keep in mind my next phone will have 850 3G chip (or.. if you have learned from my posting, an 850 3G demodulater
Buggy i know you know alot about these types of things (reading your post in the 3g limitation thread) Would you have any thoughts of something and someone that would be able to help us get the 850 3G frequency working?
I am quite impressed actually at the EDGE speeds I do receive. I don't do much of YouTube and other things that require an intense of amount of data when I do use the internet. Google Maps and Live Search works just fine on EDGE. If I need to browse the internet I just use Opera Mini which works awesome on the HD I might add.
The only complaint I have about this device is that it's not 3G. If the great minds on XDA or somewhere else some how figure out to get 3G then that's even better.
I can't wait to see what new devices HTC launches this year. I hear up to 10 new devices. Heck we might even see a HTC Touch HD Pro with the necessary 3G 850/1900 frequency.
3g
I love my touch HD Edge works great 3G is a big hype
I am surprised with the edge speeds on this phone, way quicker than the Omnia, but.... Get for example an iphone 3G (not trying to make a comparison or a phone war as i am not even a fan of it just the first 3g phone that pops up) and go on to the same website and at same time and you will notice a huge difference in my opinion. The HD uses the same exact radio off of the touch diamond American version so i think it should be possible to enable it.
All;
I'm trying to find a straight answer on US carrier support for the HD. So far; I've read that there is:
1)No support for the HD in the US
2)Support for GSM only in the US
3)Possible support for 3G depending on your area
4)Working 3G support in some areas
So; what's the deal here? Do we have a "CONFIRMED" working HD in the US? The questions I'd like to have answered in one thread if possible:
1)What carriers are people currently using SUCCESSFULLY with the HD?
1a)What area is that working in?
2)How is the internet speed on it?
2a)If 3G is working, what kind of speed differences are you seeing?
2b)If 3G is working, what area are you in that it works for you?
3)If it is working for you in any form; were custom ROMS needed; or any sort of hack short of plugging in your SIM card?
3a)If needed; links would be great!
4)Any reported and confirmed 'show-stopping' bugs / problems using the HD in the US.
5)Any items or information we need to be aware of when trying to purchase this phone for US use? (Don't buy from EU...don't buy from AUS, avoid certain model versions...etc?)
Answers so far ((so you don't have to go searching for them!))
1) T-Mobile & ATT
1a) Wisconsin -ATT | Chicago - ATT
2) Edge = ok
2a) No - Wisconsin, Chicago
2b)
3) No hacks needed - plug in SIM card, possibly might have to select network from list
3a)
4) Problems sending MMS on AT&T. 99% send then fail.
5)
I'm using T-Mobile in the US.
Didn't have to do ANYTHING special at all to get it running. Stuck in my tmobile sim, it asked which carrier I wanted to use (T-Mobile US or Tuyo or something like that). I selected tmobile and wala.
Don't know about 3G as I do not have a data plan right now (it's $25 / month and I have Wi-Fi 88% of the time).
Have flashed and hard-resetted many times since with no problems.
ONLY PROBLEM: MMS will not work. I have searched all over and made sure that I have all the correct settings. However it will not work no matter what I try. Sending usually makes it to 99% then fails. Sucks.

The HD will work in the US on either T-Mobile or ATT.
I am using ATT in Wisconsin and can confirm the phone will not pick of 3G.
EDGE internet speeds are pretty good. I wouldn't go streaming youtube, however. Wifi is around in more places than you think...
I'm using the ROM that came on the phone. I popped in my ATT sim card and all the settings were detected and it worked in a matter of 30 seconds.
I am in Chicago area on AT&T and it works fine. No 3G data but edge is fine. I am streaming video using a slingbox and it works ok.

It's not the phone that won't pick up 3G but the lack of a network or cell masts transmitting a 3G/HSDPA signal. So people, lets not blame the phone if you subscribe to inadequate networks. 3G has been around for over 10 years. I can't believe americans still need a tutorial.

it's both the phone and network's fault, the phone for not having UMTS 850, 1700, or 1900. And the networks for choosing those frequencies over umts 900 and 2100.

Wow, a little full of yourself there? It's not like I climbed towers and decided to put 850 bands in America.
I believe if I made a $750 purchase, I would know whether or not the phone was capable of picking up US 3G bands or not.
But I guess your right, I should move to Europe to take advantage of the "adequate" networks.
There is no need to be a jerk about it.

I'm using mine on ATT, use mostly wifi which has been good, EDGE is good the few times I've used it (based on what I've heard from people using 3G on other phones, it's not that much better than wifi, but I'm sure that's location dependent). I'm using it in NC and surrounding states, have only sent/received MMS a couple of times but haven't had any problems yet. Didn't have to do anything except insert the SIM and choose ATT. I haven't seen the 3G icon pop up so that means no 3G compatibility where I'm at.
TMobile USA is great
I am an airline pilot and use my HD nationwide and it works splendidly in every city I have been to. EDGE is much, much better than GPRS that I had on my Imate Jasjar (Universal) but I would agree that the only drawback is to streaming YouTube. YouTube on EDGE is functional but it uses the lower quality mode.
I am successfully using MMS on TMo here in the USA so any trouble with it might just be a setting that needs to be tweaked. Having had some trouble with that on my JasJar in the past I just set it up manually and did just that when I got the HD. I didn't even try the default MMS settings, just deleted them and put my own in that I knew worked.
As for 3G, didn't work on my JasJar and not on my HD but for me it turns out to not be a deal breaker at all. Having had four different WM devices over 6 years, the HD is blowing me away. I really love it's speed, screen and size. HTC did a really nice (not great) job with the TouchFlo UI and hope that a few updates will make it great. Now that I installed the new Resco Explorer (GSFinder before) I don't need to use the stylus at all! I like that the most.
For those of you in the USA, give TMobile a try. I don't think you would be unhappy with their service and pricing.
Regards,
Gordo
I'm using iWireless (Owned by Tmobile) in Iowa. No problems getting it to work like all the others here. I don't have a data plan, so haven't tested that out yet. And it's just commonly known that the HD doesn't support US 3G.
It supports 3G, but we cant use it because the antenna is set to receive 2100 and 900.

You may need the data plan for MMS to work properly. I have T-mobile in the US and here is what I did. I signed up for their $9 amonth TZones (now web2go) package. Don't tell them you have a "smartphone" or else you will have to really fight to get it.
It is not great. You have a choice between 100 MB a month or 50 MB and tons of messaging. Since I mostly use WiFi the 50MB was enough.
If they tell you that the $9 plan won't work on their phone, don't fall for it. It will work on any phone.

WOW. That is WAY great information to know. So the $9 / month T-Zones is REAL full data / internet browsing? Not some stupid V-Cast like thing?
I have been dying trying to figure out what to do...when I signed up I thought unlimited data was $6 / month (it was some web2go thing for $5.99), then I find out that they discontinued it right after I got my phone and it's now $25...ridiculous. So I have been wondering, should I:
A. Switch to ATT.
B. Have an HD w/ no internet plan.
C. Go back to my vogue on sprint evdo rev a fastest mobile internet in us.
Are you pretty positive about that then? I could sign up for that right now and get 50mb browsing full internet for $9 / month as long as I tell them that it isn't a smartphone?
THANK YOU SO MUCH. AWESOME information for my situation...
Jim.
Uhm... perhaps I am missing something obvious but.
If i go to phone, then select "Options", then select "Band".
I can choose between network type "GSM" or "WCDMA".
Also for GSM/UMTS band I can choose between:
1) UMTS(2100)+GSM(900+1800)
2) UMTS(850+1900)+GSM(850+1900)
3) UMTS(800+2100)
Does that option have no effect? or what?
hi, title says it all really. i'm looking to get a new contract and 3 seem to have a good deal, i just have a bad feeling about them.
how is reception?
how is the internet? i used to have orange and their internet was slow, wouldnt load up youtube videos nicely compared to my o2.
and is there anything else i should know??
thanks in advance.
they are present in many countries around the globe and their reception
would most likely differ in various countries
so stating where you live would most likely be helpful
hi sorry, i am in uk.
3 is an okay network in the UK, they have been doing a lot of work recently to improve signal throughout the UK. I get full signal nearly everywhere I go around London and the local suburban area's, but there are a few dead spots, which can be fixed by moving a few cm to the left or right
I've had no problems with 3 been with them for about 4 years now
Yes!
I have been using them for more than 5 years and overall it is very good network, I live in london and I hardly had any problem in anything watching youtube videos even bbc iplayer is super smooth as well as the internet browsing HSDPA speed is enabled.
The coverage in the North East is slightly better than it was, but it's still pathetic, unless you're in a city, and even then it's just adequate.
3 RAN share with t-mobile's UMTS network so you should see a lot better performance than in the early days, Although I am not to sure what the customer services are like as I have heard nothing but bad stuff!!

3 wont be un shared with T-Mobile as they both benefit from the agreement. I don't think internally many people know what will happen network wise between orange and t-mobile yet..
I'd really advise against going with 3.
The offers all look too good to be true and in my experience they are....
There customer service is non-existant and 4 years after i cancelled my contract i started getting letters from them and a bogus debt collection agency trying to get money out of me.
If you think mine is an isolated incident... Google "3 mobile lowell"
I never had any issue with coverage though, so if you plan to stay with them forever and dont see yourself needing to contact customer services then it's up to you.
