Hello,
I have a HTC Shift with a German keyboard and from time to time some keys stop working.
Now became even worse and it does not recognize these keys:
T, Z and the Right Arrow key
They are also not working in Snapvue, so it is not a software issue.
What can I do to repair these keys?
edit: I just looked behind the Shift keyboard and there seems no possibility to look and maybe clean behind the keys. So I need a new keyboard.
Any idea, where I can order a replacement keyboard for the shift?
I've had similar problems on other laptops, which have been solved by removing the keyboard and cleaning the connector, and the slot it goes into.
The dirty contacts prevent groups of keys from working.
Hi,
I remove the keyboard and cleaned to connector but with no effect. The 3 keys still don't work.
The bad is in the internet I can't find any replacement keyboards for the shift to order. And even if I find one it should be a foreign key layout.
Should I try to contact HTC? Maybe they sell single parts?
Afaik giving the Shift away to repair it would 1. cost much more and 2. it would be away for weeks or months. But I use this device every day and replacing the keyboard should take only 3 minutes.

YOUR HTC Shift cannot be older than 2 years and therefore must have
factory insurance on it (if you are in the European Union)
So just send it in for repair, ask your reseller for the guarantee regulations.
And this is the problem:
I know that sending it for repair would take at least one month until I get it back. But for this time I have no replacement.
And in the end they could tell me that the repair caused additional costs which I have to pay. And in that case a new keyboard bought by myself would be less expensive.
...and he already opened his device, so: No more warranty!
I have a new shift keyboard,but is Spanish layout.if u need it,mail to:[email protected]

I currently have 2 vario 2 handsets. one of them (4 weeks old) have a "lazy" letter M on the keyboard. It clicks, but does not always register the letter. Can you buy a spare keyboard? I would like to sell this one on, but not sure if it would be worth repairing. 200 pounds on ebay would go nicely towards a sky HD box! Am I allowed to offer it on here? if somebody has bricked their phone it would be a nice little job to swap the keyboard. or has anyone got an old keyboard? any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.
I too could use a keyboard, I can't read my "I" key at all from my thumbnails scratching off the paint, and a lot of other keys are messed up also, when first I got the device I thought it was the top slide untill I realized it was me causin it.
I've seen posts asking for keyboards, and long ago someone posted a service to swap out the keyboard for the qwerty fix, it was asked if the keyboard could be purchased alone, but if I remember right they never replied back.
I could sure use one and maybe a few extras.
I was wondering if it is possible to replace/resolder/fix the buttons (ie green phone button - not the keyboard)?
Has anybody had to fix theirs yet? I don't think it is worth the money to have it fixed in a service center. I could almost buy a new one for the same $$$. Maybe a bricked hermes for replacement parts?
The buttons can still be pressed but you have to hit them pretty hard to get them to register...
Comments/advice welcome!
thanks!
Mike
Ps: just read the service manual. Looks easy enough.... Am I missing something?
Mike,
Have you completed the repair yet? How did it go? All my front panel buttons (green, red, ok, Windows, soft keys, d-pad, video call, mail and IE) on my Dopod 838 Pro have stopped working, and I think I may have to open it up.
Went just fine. I followed the service manual - spent time checking and rechecking everything before I touched it. Don't use a leatherman to open the case - an old creditcard is way better and doesn't scratch the housing. Changed the housing while I was at it. I really like the black Orange-look!
on hindsight:
I was a bit surprised to see the amount of $$$ bricked phones go for at ebay though... Money-wise the gap between getting a new phone and selling the old one for parts and fixing it is not as big as I would have liked it to be.
good luck with your project!
Michael
I havent dropped my wing or anything but the "W" and "S" keys on the qwerty keyboard have been losing their sensitivity for the past few weeks. I have to press REALLY hard to get them to work
Anyone know if this would be fixed by replacing the keys or might this be something deeper? I'm toying with the idea of taking it apart - I'm not a stranger to taking apart some of my other phones - but the wing is way more complicated than anything I've done before....
TIA
See if you still have waranty before you take your herald apart.
If so...take it back to the store you've bought it from cause once you've taken apart your device all waranty is lost.
If not...i have see several how-to's to disassemble your herald with good pictures. Try google because i cant't find the exact location where i saw them, perhaps howards forum? Spare parts a sold all over internet or try to buy a broken version for someone over here...might even be cheaper.

i had the same problem, before i broke my 1st wing, after about 5 months into having the phone the "S" button started losing its sensitivty and only worked when i to pressed it down really hard and even sometime it still wouldnt work, now that i had a new wing for a while the same thing is happening again with the "S" button but this time about 8 months into having the phone, i dont know why its doing that but its real annoying when i am textin something
i remember reading that alot of people having problems with their hard keyboard on their xperia, alot of us experience after a couple months or usage the space button does not work to well either you have to press down really hard or use only certain spot on the space keyboard.
My solution...please do at your own RISK....i use a xacto knive or hobby knive whatever you want to call it...carefully run it through the keyboard...i then remove the battery and sim and use a duster canister and blow into the gaps...try to lift the keys you have issue with slightly and blow some air into there too...basically i just clean the keyboard.
hope this help
where did you find out that this is a known problem as my phone has a problem with the space button as in its cracked
i have contacted my network and they said if its not a part of the warrenty or they believe it was my fault i would have to pay for the repair
however and sony ericsson i had before had a simular known problem where the buttons kept cracking so i was able to get a replacment free of charge
it would be a great help if you could post a link and/or let me know where you got the information from so i could try and get a replacment phone or it repaired (I am suprised with me x1 though I recieved mine when vodafone uk first released them and haven't had to replace it and i have had very little problems)
i am having the same problem with space bar..
why not get replacement instead of voiding warranty?
there was a thread a couple weeks back and many people report that they have to press down alot harder on their space bar or the right side of the space bar doesnt work....its not voided the warranty or anything you are not opening up the phone just cleaning it so the button would work again...and theres no crack on my xperia...i believe that is another problem with xperia havin cracks in certain area of the phone.
Ok well I will just go into my local vodafone shop soon and hope they will provide me with a replacement
I am not very good with what to say
When I contacted then on the phone I was told that if they thought it was my fault i would have to pay for the repair
One thing that has annoyed me is since the update a few weeks ago (the R2 one i think it is) I have had to hard reset my x1 quite often and when trying to remove programs they are still there
SE SUPPORT IS NOT GOOD !
sorry.. i am really fed up with them..

I am experiencing the exact problem that you describe, the keyboard space bar on the left side is perfect, but on the right side it has a fault. The button still works but has no feedback or click from the right side of the button, it also creaks a bit from the surrounding panel when I press the button.
I have had my phone only a few days, but I got it from eBay, so I cannot return it. Do I still have a manufactures warrantee? Or do I need to provide proof of purchase?
Has any one else go this problem? Has it been reported as a common problem by Sony Ericsson, so it can be fixed under manufactures warrantee?
Else does the solution at top of this thread work?
im not sure about warranty if you bought it off ebay thats just like buying from the flea market, you get something for a deal but its as is no warranty usually...
im not asking any of you guys to void the warranty im just clean the xperia take out the battery and use a air canister to blow off the dust inside the xperia and clean in between the buttons you have trouble with thats all...
this works for me so i just wanted to past it along to you guys hopefully it works for you as well.
cheers
X1 Spacekey problem
My X1's space key has also developed a problem. Not only do I have to press the keyboard harder than usual but sometimes it puts a period "." instead of a space. I would like to clean it out but I'm afraid that I might break the space key
Got the same problem and mine got extra 'n' key problem.
Had the same problem, keyboard sensitivity issues. Sent it down to SE and they replaced the keyboard within 2 days. Now it's working fine.
i have noticed a sensitivity issue with the space bar but it weirdly only started happening when i upgraded to R3. Since then the space bar acts erratic and instead of one space it adds three or four with a single press.
lower the sensivity in settings
my problem is that space is not reacting well AGAIN...allready had it replaced once
Hello !
I recently broke my touch screen (only the touch part not the LCD).
I can't buy a new phone now so I have to stay with my beloved broken HTC Vogue...
I performed a hard reboot and managed to skip the calibration screen (with the "welcome.net" file) but now i have problems with soft keys as they are mostly use to confirm or cancel notifications and, for example, configure the mail sync...
Do you know a way to deal with this huge problem ?
Can we relocate soft keys to the keyboard ?
I tried many thread here but couldn't find a solution.
Thanks a lot!

You can actually BUY a new digitizer (the part that senses your touch) for $10 off eBay. I'm assuming that's the problem, and its not some internal circuitry.
http://cgi.ebay.com/HTC-VERIZON-XV6...wItemQQptZPDA_Accessories?hash=item27abf0db4b
Ignore the Verizon statement on the auction, the digitizer / phone is the same on both Verizon and Sprint. The parts are compatible. You only lose the Sprint logo.
eBay search "xv6900 digitizer":
http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_tr...kw=xv6900+digitizer&_sacat=See-All-Categories
I don't know where instructions are for replacing the digitizer, but I'm sure you can google search it. I've heard difficulty scale is about a 2.5/5. No soldering, but some moderate disassembling of your phone.
Good luck!
I also have a broken screen. I have been working with it for about two weeks now. Your not going to be able to do much. I can read texts and emails, and I can make and receive calls... but thats about it.
As the post said above order a new digitizer. I ordered one earlier this week and I am waiting for it to arrive. I got a whole new case and buttons to go along with the digitizer. Figure if I am going to tear it all apart I might as well put on a new case and such. Only paid $25 shipped. I will let you know how it goes!
My mistake... I think my phone is a HTC Nike (touch dual in France)...
I managed to assign the left and right soft keys to the volume keys (long press).
It works fine but in some menues like the alarm clock or active sync it's difficult to navigate easily...
(Moderators, do we have to move the topic to the Nike section ?... sorry again...)
