Here's the deal: I have no data plan, and every time I flash a new ROM data is automatically enabled. I always skip google registration so I can do it later of over wifi, but still the 3G icon shows in and outgoing traffic. This means I get shafted out of a couple of quid every time I flash a ROM. I always delete the APNs before flash a new ROM, but they always fudging come back >.< Anyone know a way to stop this from happening?
Can't you just take out your sim card?
The phone won't boot without a SIM card AFAIK.
I haven't got around to rooting and ROMing yet, but mine boots fine without a sim card, can still use over wifi etc.
Even if it didn't you can send off for free ones.
Ah, last time I tried to boot without a SIM was on 1.1, not 1.5/cupcake. Maybe they removed the restriction..thanks
Yea that is basically the only way to stop it from connecting. I imagine when you wipe and flash a new rom all the settings change back to default. Only other thing I can think of is get a prepaid sim to use for setup but that is a costly hassle.

I just don't see how it's acquiring after a wipe. I didn't have my APN settings until I went to Turkey and the phone was in roaming mode. Before that I entered them myself and they went away after a wipe. Oh well, the phone does boot without a sim, I'll just do that. Thanks for your help everyone.

How is it costly if you don't need credit.
O2: Free
Vodafone: Free
T-mobile: Free
Orange: £0.97
Virgin: Free (these were 97p when I ordered one a couple of weeks ago )
Tesco: Free
Three: free
Edit: Added Three, since I'd listed the others, the 3 offer is weird, they send you 2 sim cards which get free calls and texts between them!

Well I was speaking from what I know about us carriers, they all charge $ here for prepaid sim's here. But I wish it was like that here.
there is a method to disable the lock screen from "no sim card" with adb. You should try that, its very handy

I am about to purchase a Mytouch but according to what I have heard, you can't go pass the welcome screen without a data plan. Is that correct ? If it isn't, can anyone tell me how to activate it via Wifi using ADB like the process for G1 ?
Thanks a lot
I had the same problem when i first got my phone because i bought it on craigslist (no contract). If you know anyone that has Tmobile with a data plan u can use their sim card to activate your phone. As long as you get past signing in with google you should be good. Please Root your phone in future to avoid having this problem again.

Have you tried following the steps outlined here?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=452316
What I gathered from that tutorial is that the 'unlocking' is simply a record added to a database in the phone, which you can get around if you root the phone and manually add it yourself. Haven't tried this though.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate your replies ! The methods u guys offered are pretty much how to root a magic, means that I must have my phone activated first, lol
Thanks again
First, I do not know how to active the G2 with a SIM, or via Wifi rather than via APN. (I'm trying to do the same thing myself at this time, and still seeking the solution).
BUT... I have found a baby step. I see that when you turn on the phone, it comes up to a starter screen which shows you the green Android, and the two selections, Emergency Dial, and, Change Language. I find that if I click on the "MENU" button, it pops up a tab at the bottom of the screen that says APN. This allows me to change the APN settings. Worthless without SOME data plan, but, it might be helpful to someone trying to use an alternate provider's APN settings (along with a SIM sled / flexible PCB (sold on several sites) behind the SIM to 'unlock' use with an alternative carrier, such as AT&T - easier to borrow an iPhone SIM with a Data plan, as there are more of them). Just a thought.
Just a note, I have already changed my phone from "Donut" to "CupCake", and my goal is to go to "Root". My current HBoot is 1.33.0006 (my phone has the 32B motherboard).
i got past the welcome screen without a data plan. We have 3 mt3g in my house and we all got past the welcome screen.
I just got past the activation screen, but without any magic. The version of firmware I have on my phone (HBOOT-1.33.0006) is likely newer than the one which allowed you to skip authentication without a data plan... I suspect this maneuver / inconvenience was added to the later versions of the firmware for exactly what it tried to require of me - to verify that I am a supposedly new customer, or an existing customer with a 3G data plan.
I was able to activate the phone the first try using my TMobile SIM which has a 5.99 TMobile Web (aka T-Zones) plan on it. That SIM worked for about 1 hour with data access, then MAGICally, the data stopped working, though the phone still worked as a phone.
I read up, and discovered this likely had something to do with the Donut / Cupcake installed on the phone by TMobile. I feel that during the one hour working time, the phone somehow auto-updated something to recognize the level of my SIM / data plan was too low.
Regardless.... I borrowed a co-worker's TMobile SIM - he had NO DATA PLAN... It allowed me to authenticate the G2 via Edge / GPRS / HSDPA. I glean from this that upon receiving an UNKNOWN, but active TMobile SIM card, the phone somehow allows that SIM access to data long enough to activate the phone. But for a SIM the phone has seen before and disabled, the disabled SIM remains disabled for data.
Next step... Root the phone, and swap out the ROM to something that doesn't lock me into requiring another activation via Gmail account (I hear that Hero may be a good ROM...). Crossing my fingers...
NEED HELP - i was reading above hoping that someone would ahve the same issue as me or well to be specific my gf.

There is in fact no way to activate your plan without a plan. What I did was spend $60 for a single month of the plan, activate the phone, and then cancel it, and it worked fine.
However, if you can find some way to get Cyanogen on your phone, (you can't use the 1-click root application and install the cyanogen recovery image, though without having access to the phone), the newest Cyanogen has a little button to bypass the stupid activation mode, so you'll never need a plan again.
Trust me, it took me 3 months of trying to get it working without a plan.
Edit: Oh, actually if you have a friend with a plan that has a t-mobile phone with internet access (only certain ones work, though, not the sidewinder) you can steal their sim card for a few second and activate it that way.
I bought the US version of HD2 today and unlocked it.
What do i have to do to use all the features and functions on AT&T's network? I would like my email, internet, weather, stocks to work. Any tips? I am able to make only phone calls right now and would like to start using all the other features. Thanks in advance for all your help.. also, i have PDA plan already..
I also unlocked the HD2 and am using on AT&T and had the same problems. I could make calls and had internet access for the first day, but had to do a hard reset and when it came back up I could only make calls. There is a fix though. Go to:
Settings>Wireless Controls>Data Connection>Add a new modem connection
Under "Enter a name for the connection" type: Media Net
Select a modem: Select Cellular Line (GPRS), then hit next
Access Point Name: wap.cingular, then hit next
Leave blank user name, password, and domain, then click finish.
You won't get 3G access this way (only Edge), but you should now be able to access AT&T's Media Net data plan and browse without problems. This worked for me anyway.
If anyone knows how to get 3G speed, please share!
AT&T forcing 30$ smartphone data plan
Hi,
I also unlocked my t mobile HD2 and put my at&t SIM card in it. AT&T recognizes my device as blackberry 7290 and automatically added 30$ smartphone data plan on it. Also, they did not help me set up the edge network which i finally did by myself. Anyways, is there a way to put only 15$ data plan on it?
Thanks,
Vikrant

Buy the Telstra one, that's the only way you'll get 3G sorry to say. Wish US carriers all use the same frequencies.
Guys, how you unlocked the phone?
I got a unlocked T-Mobile HD2 and try to use HSPL2 to flash this moble, but the message tell me "wrong model ID".
I don't know what to do.

Ok, all i had to do was call Tmobile to get the unlock code for my phone. i downloaded the MediaNet cab file, installed it and everything is working great except the Visual Voicemail which i understand because it is strictly developed for Tmobile.

You do realize that:
A. There's a separate forum for the T-Mobile HD2?
B. You could've bought an HD2 (Telstra version -- T9193) that's compatible with AT&T 3G?
I am also interested to learn of any way to avoid paying the $30 data plan instead of the $10 one. Anyone? Anyone? I looked at the option of changing the IMEI but will not go there after learning it is illegal. I'm ok with edge on at&t but not if I'm paying $30 a month.

Register a feature-phone with AT&T and get them to switch the data back to $15.
Also, any Blackberry IMEI they're registering is wrong as nobody sells/uses a BB 7290 anymore.

NuShrike or anybody, Do you have specific experience with switching down to the $15 data plan? Whether the 7290's are in use anymore or not I'm thinking that AT&T is going to switch me right back to the $30 data plan when I make a call from my HD2(BB 7290 to them).

I'm technically still using my Sony-Ericsson on my grandfathered data plan, and have never been upgraded to the $30. I also stay under ~100MB a month so ymmv.
I've read all over HowardForums this is the way to get back in to $15. Just make sure you'd NEVER registered your HD2 IMEI with your account on AT&T by telling some rep, or such. Otherwise, you're SOL because you've publicly admitted to them that it's a "smartphone". Don't do any communication with at&t using your HD2. Get a pay-go and swap in your current sim if you need to.
So far so good. I've made it almost 24 hours with a $10(when added to family unlimited messaging) data plan. Anyone know if I should be in the clear or do they only sweep weekly/monthly?
I have been wanting to try and see if I can buy a pay as you go plan and phone then just swap out the sim in my T9193 and all be fine without them catching on to what phone im using and terminating my data? Anyone ever done this before? The first time I tried pay as you go I told them what phone I was using and shortly after the data was terminated because I was using the nexus one so I was stuck with unlimited minutes and no data.
A friend of mine received his unlocking code today, and on his AT&T customer online page... it showed that he had that ancient BlackBerry model as well.
However, they didn't automatically switch his data plan. I told him to basically call, but NOT from the device, and to demand the unlimited data plan, but not for the iPhone (which is what he had previously) so we'll see whether or NOT they ask too many questions about the device he's currently using.

Flash HSPL2 and new ROM wouldn't help to unlock the sim. That's what I did. I ends up fax the request to Tmobile where I got my phone at full price. They send me the code few hours ago.

I am using it with ATT, its unlocked from tmobile, I got the att cab, just install this, and it puts the media net settings on the phone
The only problem is sometimes in my email, or google maps, it will say something about a connection problem? Anyone else have those issues?

I know that normal T Mobile firmware requires you to connect to the web through T Mobile Web n Talk.
Well my firmware is now flash to 1.66 WWE and my phone is now unlocked.
I bought a O2 sim and a Vodaphone sim with 3GB and 1 GB prepaid data credit.
Whenever i open a browser app or go to setting> wireless controls > data connections i get this error message:
Cannot Connect
Dialed:
Cannot connect for unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap settings and change them if needed, tap settings. If the problem continues, reset your mobile device according to your manufacture's documentation and try again.

Anyone have any idea what is going on?
Hi
I have done the same to my phone and it works fine on O2.
I assume you did a hard reset after the debranding operation?
Once my phone came back to life after all the software changes, I went to Start/Settings/All Settings/Connections/Connection Setup. Tapped the operator button, selected O2 from the drop down list and the phone connected and got all the necessary settings for GPRS an HSPDA connections. You will need to setup a WiFi connection first (I think). It might have downloaded the settings via SMS.
However, if you want to set your phone up manually, try this site first, filesaveas.com/gprs.html
(as a new user I am not allowed to post links yet, so you will have to add the url to the beginning of the link).
it is full of great advice for UK mobile Phone Operators WAP/GPRS/HSDPA/Email settings.

um...
I'm not sure if i did the hard reset or not.
I'm going to test it on another Sim, as there is a chance that i don't actualy have usable credit on these Sim's so i'm going to try on a 3 Sim which gets 150mb free with 10 pound top up and is definitely for use in 3G phones.
My sims might be for wireless modem only, not too sure.
If that fails then i'll start look into other options.
How much of a problem would not hard resetting be?
Hopefully i did and that's not the problem.
Good to hear others have had success with T-mobile unlocked.
What is the worse case scenario? Re flashing and hard resetting?
Thanks.
if you were still on your tmo sim when you flashed to 1.66, then you probably still have the tmo settings for mobile data set as default. A hard reset is a good idea, and let the phone pick up the settings from the sim automatically, or at least make sure all trace of tmo is gone.
look here
settings - menu - all settings - connections - connections - manage existing connections to see a list of currently configured mobile networks
I use both a 3 SIM and a t-mobile and the HD2 will pick up their use, configure the settings and store them both at the same time and all automatically.
You shouldn't have the problem that you are experiencing. And its nothing to do with setting a WiFi connection.
Who unlocked the phone for you?

I haven't seen a phone SIM with prepaid data credits. If your phone is set for the right operaror, my guess is that you can't use this data allowance through your phone. You might try the router feature or connect a laptop to use the Web via your phone. If you're in the UK you might try T-Mobile and see if they still offer the PAYG SIM I have. 'Unlimited' data and texts are included in the month after you top up with £10. If you top up in April, data and UK SMSs would be free in May. Top up in May and browse and text for free in June. The £10 top up remains for calls. The offers change but this one suits me.
I use my laptop to connect to the Internet via my HD2 router. T-Mobile say this is against their rules. If they can tell the difference between phone and laptop use, perhaps you can use your data this way and so my earlier comment. They haven't said anything to me yet so I doubt it. I think you'd need to install the router; it's been removed by most operators.

Like I said I have the same SIM as the OP and of course it works in the phone. Its just a SIM with credit on it and I also use it in a mobile broadband USB modem through a 3 WiFi router without any problem.
Some of the prepaid 3 payg boxed deals are preloaded with bundles of data access thats what the OP must have, but there shouldn't be any problem with them connecting in a phone.

I have a T-mobile PAYG SIM in my HD2. When I top up with £10, I get 'unlimited' data and UK text messages in the following month. The definition of unlimited varies but I've used over 1Gb without T-mobile becoming upset. It's not pre-loaded data but amounts to the same thing. You might need to check that the offer is still valid.
I have an Orange HTC HD2 on to which I have loaded two different Android systems and they have worked fine. However, as Orange seem expensive I bought a 'three' 3GB SIM from eBay.
It worked today in a phone in a 'three' store and 'three' shows up with the Orange SIM in my phone (but, unsurprisingly, the Orange SIM will not allow me to connect). I have unlocked my phone from Orange, but with the 'three' SIM I get no service, no networks, no APNs - nothing - apart from it briefly saying, I think, it has registered with the network and it then reports "Error while searching for networks"
I would be grateful for any advice.
Is you phone sim unlocked?
If not then that would be why it cannot get any signal...
Yes, I have a SIM network unlock PIN which when I enter the phone reports "Network unlock succesful".
I am a bit lost... Did it work under wimo with different sims. Could be the unlock code has to be entered with wimo as things are not correctly configured in android.
I have only used the 'three' SIM with Android (Pure Gingerbread gpc and BoyPPC versions).
Could it be that the unlock code I have entered has not properly unlocked the phone - despite the message "Network unlock succesful" as above?
Yeah possibly put wimo back on and enter unlock code then. Test and see. If it still does not work I would contact orange to see what the problem is...
you only need to enter the code once to unlock, are you able to enter it more than once?
I have to enter the unlock code each time I boot from cold and when I switch airplane mode off.
I really would go back to wimo and do it there something is not being saved properly...
Chris,
I find that's easier said than done.
Can you point me at a UK Orange WM6.5 ROM for the HTC HD2?
sounds like its only a temporary unlock code not a full unlock code
Well tbh any wimo rom would work. but on that front
but here is the 3.14 rom straight from HTC
http://www.htc.com/uk/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=297&cat=2&dl_id=1049
If you flash from PC it will NOT overwrite HSPL.
Just enter bootloader -> connect to PC then flash.
Also where did you get the unlock code from?
I had my HD2 with Orange lock on it as standard, all i did was go to a reliable known unlock site, unlock it to all networks in windows mobile.
Then flash android.
I now run a Three 3g sim card and it's the best network and cheapest ive used.
3g speeds are awesome.
I NEVER got above 400-500kbps on Orange...it was ****!
From the very first day I put my Three pay as you go sim in, i've never got below 2,000 kbps - awesome.
Average connection is 3-5 meg.
Price = awesome.
£10.00 top up = 1500 free texts + 500mb internet
I pay an extra £5.00 for 500mb internet....wicked
matt
My contracts ends very soon and will be moving to giffgaff as it seems the best value for money, runs of o2 so will be reliable. Friends do and never had a problem with it. Even though this drags it off topic, do you get any minutes in that £10 top up Matt?

I tried your link and others on the page but was met with "Sorry this software download is not susitable for your device". My serial number starts with SH.
So I have tried WP7. I have to enter the unlock code each time I cold boot and get "PIN accepted" each time. However, when using the connection set up app I get "Warning There is no SIM card or PIN code has not been input.
I got the unlock code from HTCimeiUnlock.com. It cost me £15.54 (or $25). Is it , as Richy suggests, a temporary unlock code that does not seem to work even temporarily.
Any further ideas?
Go back to them and say it did not work. ask for a return, never know may get your money back.
There is a better one, honestly I cannot remember the name. helpful eh? thought it was HTC unlocks but that does not do the leo.... was going to suggest unlockitnow.com but its $70!
Since the 4shared folder is now up here is a link to the orange rom
http://www.4shared.com/file/Oc0SHxFY/RUU_Leo_S_Orange_UK_314612_Rad.html?
So then I would try to call orange ask nicely and see if they will give you an unlock code. Do not know if they are kind, most do a O2 give them out for free after a month or so... and T-mobile too. No idea about orange....
Chris,
Thanks for your help. I've just grabbed the Orange ROM from 4shared.
I am drawn the the conclusion that my unlock code is defective. I'll ask for my money back.
Does anyone know a reliable source for unlocking an Orange HTC HD2?
Just a note to say that HTCimeiUnlock.com have provided a refund.
I guess my only avenue now is to ask Orange for an unlock code.
Hello, I'm new to this forum.
I'm having an issue with a HTC Evo 3D on the Three network. I bought this phone sim free, and have been using it on Three pay and go with the unlimited data package. I have been using it for about a year without tethering it with no issues. I have now just got a sim deal with free calls and unlimited data. Put the sim card in and this is where the issues started. About three times a day when trying to get on the net on my phone it keeps coming up with a Three error message SIM002 saying that I'm not allowed to tenter on this contract, and to upgrade. I have nether tried to tether on the pay and go or this new contract.
I have been in touch with Three customer services , which was an experience in itself, and got no where. I have been back to the store who has done a sim swop and reset the phone back to manufactures spec, turning off the wi-fi and anything associated with tethering. Still I'm getting this message.
I don't understand how swapping a sim card can cause so much trouble.
I was wondering if anyone can help me.
Thanks in advance
Jonathan

My best advise would be to return to the shop and cancel the contract. I was with Three for a while, purely so I could transfer my number onto a 30-day rolling contract, and I have not been particularly impressed.
