Okay, bit of a wierd one here. When playing music files through the internal speaker, all is well and fine. If I connect my headphones, all is also fine.
If I plug in the jack from my 2.1's, or into *some* fm transmitters, the songs jump, skip and return to the start of the track. This is all 100% repeatable, with a variety of songs. What could be causing this?

My wizard will only output audio through bluetooth and the audio jack, no stereo speakes or ear speaker.
This problem started last nite when I was listening to music through the audio jack. I pulled the plug out without stopping the music. When I do this, my device should have started playing the music out of its stero speakers but it did not. Now, audio will not work for calls, system sounds or music. Works fine with a headset though.
I did a hard reset to no avail.
Nevermind, blew into the jack, problem solved.
The quality of mp3 playback is quite good - I use proper headphones with 3.5mm adaptor. I also use the Audio Booster which I like.
Every so often I hear a short break in the plaback - a fraction of a second, but clearly noticeable and very annoying. Not in every song and not at regular intervals. Both the HTC player and WMPlayer do it.
I tried to synch the songs via WMP11, or just simply copy them to the storage card, does not make much difference.
Any idea what it is? It is not the mp3 files - when I wind the track back, the break is not repeated. Also on my wife's iPod nano I don't hear any breaks.

I have this problem not just with android, but wp7 also. Whenever i plug my headphone in the music player would randomly start, stutter, and skip songs. The only way to stop this is to pull my headphone out. This happens with every android build i have flashed for the past year. How can i fix this?
I have one set of in-ear phones that cause skipping (and false calls on winmo) during playback, and I can't explain it. My best guess is that the 3.5mm jack is leaking signal into the connector for the stock headphone controls, sending false signals that the phone thinks are commands from the remote.
Try some other earphones,if it doesn't happen then it's something along those lines.
I also get this with my sennheiser cx270's, sometimes its fine, other times it goes berserk.
Same, no other earphones seem to fix this, so I'm thinking it's the jack. It happens every once in a while.

I've looked around and this was common awhile back, last year, haven't seen any recent posts about it though.
when i play music through google music app on my G2 it will pause randomly, and pretty frequently. it will go through stretches where it auto pauses every like 5 seconds, as soon as i unpause and set phone down it pauses again. then it will be fine for a few songs then states pausing again.
this happens when streaming over wifi, or cell signal. also while playing music that is stored directly on my phone so no streaming issue. also happens while connected over bluetooth, headphone jack, or just playing from phone's speakers, so no bluetooth or headphone jack connection issue.
is there anyway to stop this?

I am having the exact same issue. Multiple sets of headphones as well. This is kind of a scary thing for me since I plan to use my phone for some of the playlists for my wedding.
No update...?
Im having the same issue as well. Songs will randomly pause. Youtube does too. Any suggestions? I have tried 3 finger swipe to 'save the app' and reducing active programs. Happens with bluetooth and headphones.
Is anyone else having problems with this? I plug my (new) headphones in then load up Poweramp, play a song and it just plays through the speakers. It worked before, and I can't remember what I did to make it work! All settings are fine as far as I can tell.
I've used Poweramp fair bit and never had this issue, maybe try cleaning out the headphone socket with some compressed air in case there is something in there causing a bad connection.
