Rogue Data Connection while BLANK apn is selected - myTouch 3G, Magic General

Hi everyone. I have a problem that makes NO sense at all - but it's still a problem. Here goes:
As per recommendation of a number of people around here, and because I do not have a data plan, I have had two APNs for a while now: one was the real orange UK apn I use (let's call this "real") and the other, named "null" was empty (let's call this "fake"), so that I could switch between them and avoid paying most of the time. This worked perfectly up to...
The day I received an sms (perhaps mms? not sure) from 1550. As far as I know that's the number Orange UK spams its users from. There was the text "RockCorps" and a very small attachment (15kb I think). I accidentally pressed the "download" button but did cancel right after. I'm not sure if anything downloaded at all, but I didn't actually notice anything different, except...
My data connection was suddenly on. I could see the GPRS icon, and NetSentry also reported transmitted data. I checked the apn selection screen, which confirmed that my apn was still set to the fake one. But data was being transmitted!
So while I am using a fake, blank APN, gprs goes on and off as it pleases and transmits data.
I find this very alarming (and costly). I have tried to fix the issue by:
*selecting only 2G networks (to be safe)
*turning off always on mobile data
*turning off pretty much any phone setting that have to do w/ mobile data/GPRS.
*deleting ALL apns and re-creating them
*restoring apn list to blank factory setting and then reentering both apns.
NOTHING has worked. The phone still acts as if I have the real apn selected although the fake one is selected.
The ONLY method I've found so far for the phone to stop rogue GPRSing is to delete the real APN from the list. But whenever I add it again, without selecting it, the phone exhibits the same behaviour I describe above.
I'm clueless and a bit worried here. This is not making any sense, and the exact same settings I'm using now were working perfectly exactly up to the minute I opened the aforementioned message. Can anyone please help?
---further phone info----
HTC Magic, w/ cupcake, bought in Greece fully unlocked, with NO settings/added applications added by the carrier. NOT rooted.
Using it in the UK, on Orange mobile pay-as-you-go.
I had to enter mobile data settings myself: only entered GPRS apn (I'm not sure if that's a choice or up to the provider, but I've never seen any edge/3g icons up there).

just got data T8282...cant connect on ATT!

cant anyone help me out with this? i went through the AT&T fuze tutorial online yet it still cant connect.
i dont think its because my device is a -82 vs the newer -85 is it? i got this phone with the understanding that the -82 will work but not at full 3g speed. thanks!
ive downloaded/installed the proxy patch 2.1 and att wat medianet and mms cabs...to no avail
Is the phone running a stock HTC ROM? If so, just run the HTC Connection Setup Wizard from Start -> Settings -> Connections. It will detect your AT&T SIM, and configure the MEdia Net connection correctly.
Oh, and moving out of ROM Development.
yea i have that set with wap.cingular access point and it cant connect still....no usernames or passwords or domains.
this page to be exact

When you look at the advanced setting of the connection it created, make sure that under Proxy Settings only "This network connects to the Internet" is checked. "This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet" should be unchecked.
I've used the T8282 on ATT and am currently using T8285. Both worked without a problem. Is the phone detecting your sim card? Is ATT network set-up, but your just showing now service? Look at your phone settings and check to see if a band has been selected ie GSM 1900/2100, auto etc. I don't recall the stock rom as well, haven't used it in 6 months, but if I recall, go to settings tab in manila, select the phone, wifi, internet etc. option, then select phone. You should find an option that says change band. Select it and see what band your phone is set to. If anything, check auto, and see what happens.

if it doesnt detect the sim card i wouldnt be able to call right? i can call. phone functions fine (cant send txt messages though for some reason but can receive).
im looking under settings > phone
Current network: AT&T Wireless
network selection: automatic
band: both network and GSM/UMTS set to auto
Did you say above that there was no username or password set in the settings->connections->connections? In other words the required username and Pass of Medianet?
yes those fields are left blank as per atts support page i linked
Go ahead and select "manage connections" under Media Net. On the next screen choose edit and go through until you can add the user and pass
All caps
Username: [email protected]
Pass: CINGULAR1
I had to fill these in manually when I first received my T8285. My data worked thereafter.
You're configuring your unlocked HD via the set up of a carrier based ATT Fuze. I think may be some of the problem. I configured the settings on mine seemingly a hundred times, but never in the manner suggested by the linked support page.
yea i was reading that and just checked this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=447648
and did what you said....no luck
tried [email protected] and [email protected] too
this is stupid. haha shoudltn be this hard. thanks for all the support, i appreciate it
lady at att did say this plan took effective 1.5 weeks ago so even though i called in today to change my plan to a data one...it should be working...
probably be easier if i could screenshot my phone....
Mine is [email protected]. Out of curiosity, did you input it in "all caps"?
yep tried:
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
my sim card is really old...can that be a problem??
phone should be "dialing" wap.cingular correct?
i wonder if there are problems with my phone because i cant send text messages either and if i go to settings > phone > services tab > voice mail and text messages.... it cant get any info from the network...
Yes indeed. Mine is two years old. Some that still have the cingular card have had issues. I guess the quickest way to find out is pop someone else's sim in to see if it configures your setting properly. When you go through set up initially, your ATT settings should be populated automatically. I'd like to see you get this working.
well my sim card is way beyond that. it was before att changed their name to cingular (and apparently back to att again now). got it when i got the sony ericsson t610 when it was first released...2003???
i wonder if this truly is the problem and i wonder if i take it into a store will they help me out since i have an unsupported phone.
phone when i got it new was able to call right away when i first got it and first popped in this oldie sim...so as far as settings are concerned, its working in that aspect
A sim that old could most certainly be the problem. ATT should support you. If it's the sim, then it's a service related issue and not an issue with the device. It may be that you just run by att and have them pop one of theirs' in and see. Another thought, after inputing the username and Pass, are you soft resetting?
I've used this cab on some devices (e.g. xperia) to get the AT&T data to work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=67434&d=1201326345
see if that helps for you. I believe it's designed for the Tilt but shouldn't do any harm on your HD...
ok i finally figured this out after going to the att store. it turns out it was indeed my sim card that was keeping me from sending text messages (back in this old thread i started http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=515288&highlight=send+text+messages).
the online issue was due to 2 things. the att lady told me she had added a data plan but turns out when i went to the store the dude there checked and there was no data plan. second was again because of the old sim card.
my sim card was from back in the days of the sony ericsson t610 back in 2003 before att became cingular (and now back to att again).
so hopefully this thread can be future reference for others that may have trouble with their blackstone! woohoo!! i am connected now. feels good to have internet everywhere i go.

[Q] Telstra NextG- do I need to flash something else?

Calling all Aussies. I'm a newb, and have successfully rooted my NextG (unlocked) Widlfire, and then flashed Wildpuzzle ROM. I ordered a new NextG SIM to replace my old 2G SIM and I can make calls okay but no data over NextG. I've got a data pack as part of my plan- anyone know if I need to flash anything else (a radio update perhaps?) to support NextG. I've looked in my APN config and tried all the options without success. Still says I don't have internet access. Wifi is working just fine. What to try before I ring dreaded Tel$tra support fools??

If you made a nandroid backup (which of course you did ) I would be tempted to revert back to the stock ROM and check everything works fine with that ROM and if not then phone the support guys... just in case there is a problem with the custom ROM. Once you know that the stock ROM works with your data plan you can try other ROMs and if there are problems you know it is not your provider.

Yes I did a nandroid backup. As I have my phone just set up nice now, I assume I do another nandroid backup first (and backup my SD contents). Do I need to worry about the EXT partition? Also when I restore the stock ROM I assume I will then lose root access?

Thanks for confirming it should work. I'm not really sure if I have set up the APN correctly. There are 4 Telstra profiles as follows: 1 = Telstra 3G Payby Time (telstra.pcpack), 2 = Telstra Internet (telstra.wap), 3 = Telstra w/Portal (telstra.internet) and 4 = Telstra MMS (telstra.mms).
I've tried all these without success. I also tried using the website for Telstra mobile setup. It detects my phone as a HTC Buzz, but when I choose internet settings it wants me to set up the APN manually as follows:
On touch screen Select APN and Using key pad enter Telstra.internet.
On touch screen Select Username and Using key pad enter "".
On touch screen Select Password and Using key pad enter "".
Scroll down on touch screen select Authentication type and select Normal.
Now press Menu key and on touch screen select Save menu option.
I can do everything except the last step "Authentication Type" I don't have any option for 'Normal'- I only see None, PAP, CHAP, PAP or CHAP.
Unfortunately I've tried all these without success. Would you mind posting your APN settings (PM me if you prefer)
Thanks
NextG works fine with WildPuzzle.
Are you in an area that actually has NextG coverage?
What are your APN settings in the phone?
Have you enabled data in the wireless & network settings?
An important point to note is that there is a setting in the phone which will automatically use Wi-Fi if available - so you need to turn it off (or disable Wi-Fi) or move out of range of your network to check 3G coverage.
i have the wildpuzzle rom, and am on telstra, the settings on the web work for me with authenticationtype;none,
Never mind- problem traced to Tel$tra- they had a block still in place on my data usage (something I asked for on my 2G service years ago). Never occurred to me the block would still apply after deliberately calling Tel$tra to purchase a 3G sim with data pack to replace my old 2G sim- specifically so "I could have internet access". Also strange that the Tel$tra sales person didn't notice the block still in place, nor did the Tel$tra support engineer looking into why I had no 3G service. It just occurred to me that it might be the problem and when I asked they said 'Oh yeah' you are right.
Lucky I realised this fact, otherwise Tel$tra would've been real happy to keep billing me for data that never got used! Well my expectations have been met by Tel$tra once again. It's a real shame we have no choice down here in Tasmania- otherwise I'd be with another carrier!
It's alll working good now. Thanks every1 for your help.

[Q] Data connection

I havnt activated the Live services yet but does that stop the data connection. i have singal etc but cannot get onto websites etc. If im connected to wireless then it works fine.
Im on orange and have my APN details all blank wich is what i gather is needed.
My questions is, is there something i havnt done or do you have to activate live services before your data connection will work.
I started using WP7 without Live services, too. But I didn´t face your problem.
Maybe it´s still an APN setting issue.
Am i right in thinking that for Orange UK the APN fields are all blank ?
I may be wrong
I briefly checked a setting info page. It said the name for the APN is orangeinternet, user and password empty.
Ok cool i will try that, i'll give me phone a reboot just to make sure as well.
Hmm ok that didnt work either
I had the same problem tommy but just put orangeinternet in apn name & left the other 2 blank. It worked! like the chap above us said. Thanks!

[Q] Tmo Note 3 on Cricket: Internet/MMS not working

I've checked the APNs so many times I've memorized what they're supposed to be. They ARE correct. Is there anything other than having the APNs setup and the data enabled that I can troubleshoot to figure out why my data isn't working?
BTW, I've talked to support. They are of no use. They have me check the APNs, pull SIM, roboot, check APNS, pull SIM, reboot, ..., and on the 10th iteration, they say it could be a tower problem. But it's been like this since I got the phone. I'd like to think they wouldn't have tower problems for 4 days in a row.

1- The easiest way to make sure your sim card and your subscription is OK is putting your sim card into another 'good' phone.
2- Also have another 'good' sim (from the same mobile network) and test with the same 'good' phone at the same location to make sure the network (tower) is good.
3- After (1) and (2), you are sure that your sim card and your network is OK. Then the problem is your device. Try some of the following steps:
a) Consult your service provider for the proper APN parameters and modify it accordingly.
b) You may need to factory reset your device

The APN is correct. I've typed all of it in at least 10 times. Literally. (And I'm not using "literally" as an intensifier there.) And I got them from Cricket's website and from their support staff (both gave the same settings). Since I've checked them so many times and I got them from official sources, I know that the settings entered are correct. I'm pretty certain it is the device or maybe the SIM. But calling and texting work fine, so that should rule out the SIM. (Right?)
I've factory reset the device at least once, while replacing stock firmware with AOKP. (I don't think flashing contributed because it was broken before and after flashing AOKP.) And like I said, APN is correct. Is there anything else? I've looked at the settings in the *#*#4636#*#* screen, but apart from the SMSC, I don't know what any of those settings are for and thus I don't know if any of those settings are related to data/MMS. (I know SMSC is for texting not data/MMS, I'm just saying that as a cue to remind you of the screen.)

- Did you check the steps (1) and (2) as I've mentioned above?
- No need to touch any settings in the *#*#4636#*#*. If you have changed something there, make sure the 'Preferred network type' is set to 'WCDMA preferred'.
- Enter the secret code *#2263# and see what option is selected?
- If you can not enter this secret code, you can use Phone INFO ★Samsung★ app or Shortcut Master app to launch the secret codes (under the 'Secret Code' menu, root is required).
Apparently it was the APNs. I checked the SIM in another phone and it didn't work and then maybe 15 minutes later I changed the authentication type to PAP and it stated working immediately after. So that leaves me with the conclusion that it must have either been a weird coincidence that they fixed the towers almost immediately after the change or the change made the difference. The thing is: their official APN settings say to leave it authentication type! Wtf?
Thanks for the helpful suggestions. Under normal circumstances, they would have undoubtedly been sufficient to determine and maybe even fix the problem.

[Q] Need help - Unlocked Japanese Note 3 no longer works!

Hi All,
Please help. I'm a rookie at rooting and have an unlocked Japanese Note 3 through AU (my Japanese service provider). I was in a rush and paid someone to unlock it before heading back to the States last year. The phone works with my AT&T sim card but when I am back in Japan (with Japanese sim) I am constantly being dropped from the network. 4G service usually works for internet, etc, but I cannot make/receive phone calls and only occasionally can send/receive text messages. I need to know if I should re-root the phone (and leave it rooted) or just do a factory reset (or perhaps change some other setting to get things working again)? The problem with a factory reset is that it will probably re-lock the phone and I don't have a code.
Strange Detail:
Whenever I try to dial a number, the name of a Chinese Province shows up under the Contact's Name. This suggested to me some network issue where the phone somehow thinks it's in China (though texts still kinda work...) and doesn't connect correctly to the Japanese network.
Details:
Model: sm-N900J (per the download screen) i believe this means it has a SnapDragon Processor
Knox warranty has been tripped (apparently by the guy I paid to unlock it originally - is that bad?)
Android 4.3 (looks like I'm still in the original version of Jellybean. Should I upgrade to Kitkat or Lollipop?)
Other Issues:
As of two days ago, the phone now restarts after about 5 minutes of use. Like many Note 3 phones, it's always done the occasional random restart (another reason to root?) but now it's making the phone almost unusable. Also, since having the phone rooted/unlocked/re-rooted I always get a series of warnings upon start-up. Typically, standard Samsung apps like S Planner, Calendar Storage, Keyguard and Index Service have stopped. I have never been able to use the Calendar (or other basic apps) since it always crashes. Is this an issue with Knox clashing with something from the original root (I still see SuperSU loaded -but "turned off"- in the apps menu)?
Idealy...
...someone can help me decide the best course of action (Root, Reset, Other), and how to make sure I can connect back up to my Japanese network properly. I think I'd prefer to root since what I want is an unlocked phone that works smoothly, with good battery life, little to no bloatware, a custom theme and a working S pen. If I root, what's the best method (already have SuperSU apparently) and which ROM and version of Android would be the most stable?
Main Issues Recap:
No connection to phone network (or limited 4G internet).
Phone restarts every few minutes.
Many Apps crash upon Start-up.
Thanks in advance!
So, here's an update that someone with a similar problem might find useful...
Japan uses CDMA for voice and GSM for LTE Data. Somehow (probably through using my phone in the states on a GSM network) the phone was no longer connecting to the CDMA network. Since I'd gotten no responses and felt like there was a good chance that a factory reset would not reverse the sim-unlock I'd stupidly paid to have done, I did a factory reset. Despite appearing to have solved my Index Service, Calendar Storage, S Planner crashing issues, I was still having the exact same problem of LTE working but no CDMA network.
Somehow I stumbled on to this website...(well, I'm unable to post as a new user but searching for "How To Fix Samsung Galaxy error while searching for network" should bring it up).
There, I found some really odd directions that solve network error issues. The only part of the instructions I was really able to carry out was take out the battery and simultaneously press the home and power buttons 10 times. I restarted my phone and miraculously was able to place a call for the first time in a year in Japan!
But then I no longer had any data. I figured it had to do with the APN settings being wiped in the strange reset I just tried. But when I went into Settings>More Networks>Mobile Networks there was no longer an Access Point Names option in the menu. There is no longer a "Network Mode" option either. I used to have that set to LTE/WCDMA/GSM but now I only see a System Select option that simply lets me change my CDMA roaming mode from Automatic to Home Only.
I tried searching everywhere for the missing Access Point Names menu to no avail (and almost attempted to try flashing CyanogenMod for the time hoping this would bring back the APN settings menu) but then I realized that I could do a search in the settings app. I searched APN and the option came right up (though it's frustrating that this now appears to be hidden). Using the following settings (copied below) from the AU by KDDI website I created a new APN profile. Now mobile date appears to be working just fine too!
So, now I just need to decide if I want to keep running Touchwiz in Jellybean or use my new found confidence to try rooting and custom roms...
I'm also kind of curious to see that the next phone bill comes in as expected and I'm not being charged for a bunch of crazy usage! Also, any suggestions to help explain how I got into this problem in the first place, or how to clean up any loose ends would be appreciated.
