I am reading about NAND, seems that it is basically a way to flash Google ROMs instead of booting from the memory card.
I have a few questions, I have read that it makes linux run faster and the battery life last longer, my questions are about how much faster and about how much better is the battery life vs running from the card. I am still using a winmo ROM that runs pretty good and gets me a few days of battery life, but I am always itching for something new. I tried Ion and a few others but wasnt even getting close to a day on the battery and it would hang up and/or run slow at times.
Thanks for the guidance, I just wanna do my research before going around flashing with NAND, since I forgot which ROM I am using now and the ability to find it again if I want to revert back to it.
With Plemen's Donut build from the Android Development section, I can get about 5-6 days of battery life. And I do not know about the difference in speed as I have only used this build and only on NAND.
Hello folks,
This is my first post here so I am glad to be here. I just installed the Autoboot program for my build as specified below. I was testing the ChuckyDroidROM (which I really love for its simplicty) with both Matt's Froyo with Sense UI (which I enjoy quite a bit) and the Cyanogen Mod version with shubCRAFT 1.4 and I am finding that I am getting a much better battery life with the latter.
So basically I would like to get a reference for battery life with the tweaks here for each type of combination out there so that we can get an idea of what people are getting.
After all, I am sure that we can get longer battery life that of the EVO can we?
Thanks, Albert

It doesn't matter so much if it runs on sd, because mainly it's running on memory of the phone and it's same as other android phones.
In ways it's even better/faster than phones nand if you have quick sd card.
Android need to access to sdcard to launch and work. Sdcard access has a power consumption ... So Power consumption is higher in Android, but when a Nand Version of Android will be released, it'll be proximately the same between Android and Wm.
agree with the other posts, but if your new here, read the posting guidelines. This section is for development only, not really a q&a section. If you click top left, HTC Leo: HD2 that will back you out to the main Leo section, from that point you can see the different sections and have a better idea where to post..welcome to XDA, this is one of the most knowledgeable forums I have come across.
I'm not convinced NAND will help battery life all that much, my battery use is dominated by cell standby when I'm not using the phone, and screen when I am. NAND won't reduce either of those.
I'm using TMOUS Energy Reference, Leo_Radio_2.12.50.02_2 and Xcelsior's with great results. Battery easily lasts an entire day.
I tested it out with the build in my signature and got about 12 hours of heavy use using 3G but tomorrow I plan to use only EDGE and hopefully get better life for sure.
There are too many variables in everyone's configuration to do a comparison of battery life(twitter, Exchange, POP, IMAP, Facebook, web usage, talk time, WM ROM, Android build etc). However, it might be useful to show what works for individuals and share ideas.
I don't buy into the "NAND saving battery" too much. It's still memory that needs to be accessed. It will be faster on NAND, but better battery life? I don't have the specs on power consumption per access but I would think an Android build that utilized hardware more efficiently would have bigger impact.
Take for instance your example.... why is your shubCRAFT using less battery than mattc?
battery won't improve very much in final versions, maybe -10% or so (+sleep)
but will never get as good as in WM, because android doesn't have very good optimized PM (even when they finish as much as it can be done). look at any android vs. WM device with comparable internals and you'll see that wm has much longer stand-up time
but hey if you take into consideration hd2's tiny batt i think htc has done some great job with hardware
I plan to downgrade my radio from 2.12 to 2.11 and I suspect will increase battery life a lot. Will post more later.
Testing the Xcelsior Sense build and loving it.

Due to the overwhelming amount of posts in many Rom threads, it is quite difficult even with the search option to find what you are looking for. As many of us who visit XDA on a daily basis realize, a large number of these posts are very repetitive. "Which kernel should I use for the best battery life?" "What Kernel will be the smoothest on my phone?" "Oh you have (Insert Kernel Here) Kernel, what kinda of battery life are you getting?" The questions in regards to battery life, kernels, and performance go on and on. I came up with an idea for a thread and after talking to a MOD about it decided to go ahead and get it started.
The Purpose of this Thread:
-Compile fellow EVO user's experiences with certain Rom and Kernel setup's in order to help all of us get the best performance and battery life with our EVO.
-To help cut down on the amount of repetitive posting about Kernels, Battery Life, and SetCpu in Rom threads. This is a forum and it is about makings posts, but many times people end up posting questions related to these things that have already been answered but may be hard to find.
-To give members a central thread for optimal performance based on other users experiences.
-To help other members find what Kernels, SetCPU settings, and other options will work best based upon their Hardware version.**I bring the hardware version up because it seems like certain things I.E. Kernels and certain settings do not play well with certain Hardware versions of the Evo.**
-To provide an Informational thread based on your experiences to help out everyone.
Please Note:
-This thread is NOT a place to go to war with others over which Rom is best or to bad mouth other Roms, everyone has their own preferences remember that.
-In order to keep this thread as clean and productive as possible, PLEASE REFRAIN FROM ASKING QUESTIONS HERE!
-If you have a question for an individual, PM them.
-If you have a question in regards to a Kernel, refer to the kernels thread.
-If you have a question in regards to SetCPU use the Q&A or your roms thread.
-If there is a basic question that often comes up on the Evo forums I will try to
provide links to the information.
-This thread is to be NON BIASED.
**My hopes would be that enough members post their personal stats and info here that on an OP I can list each rom, the hardware versions of the phone and what set ups seem to work the best with them. This info would be based on a general consensus based upon the information posted here.**
What to Post:
-Rom and Rom version that you are using. (I.E. Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS 4) PLEASE make the font for this RED so users can easily spot which rom you are on when looking through this thread.
-Current Software version on your phone. (I.E. 3.30.651.3)
-Hardware version of your phone. (0001,0002,0003 or 0004) Please make this RED also.
-This is found under: Settings>About Phone>Hardware Information.
-The Kernel that you are using, the full name. (I.E. netarchy-toastmod-4.2.1-cfs-bfq-havs-more-smartass-universal)
-SetCPU? If so, what kind of settings are you using?
-Any kind of battery tweak? (I.E. Colin pH method)
-How would you rate your usage, and what is you awake time? (I.E. Minimal, Moderate, Heavy)(Awake Time:Settings>Battery)
-On a day to day basis what do you use your phone for?
-What kind of battery life are you getting? (On full charge: I.E. 16 hours)
-The Pros/Cons of this setup. (Cons if there are any)
-Why you would recommend this set up to others? (Again, please do not use this to slander other roms)
If you choose to contribute to this thread, Thank you for reading through this and for your contribution. I think if we can make something of this thread we can all benefit a lot from it. If you have any suggestions on what I should add to this please feel free to post it with your info or PM me if your not posting. I will try to update as much as possible, and of course that will depend on the reply that I get.
Reserved for future use
I would state the awake time instead of asking if they are a moderate/heavy...seems less opinionated even though someone with 5 hours awake time with idle cpu is not the same as 3 hours under heavy load.

Thank you sir, I went ahead and just added it in with it. Then we get the idea from both ways. If you have anything else just let me know. I would appreciate it!
i think you should post what kind of battery you are using
is it the standard 1500 mAH battery or the other extended battery
so people won't get lost
This is a good place to start, but it's difficult to get a good idea because there are too many variables that affect battery life from user to user. In addition, my light usage could be your moderate. Then people run different programs which will affect identical setups. Just throwing these things out there if you wonder why you aren't getting the same battery life as someone with same setup.
I'll go first....
I actually think this is an awesome idea. I think the idea of "not every phone is created equally" is a little over-exaggerated with the evo. Maybe we can start finding some similarities.
Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS 4
3.30.651.3
0003
HTC Kernel #17. (I also tried the King's #11 (i think) and got horrible battery drain!)
Not using SetCPU
No Battery tweaks
Moderate usage. Not sure on awake time. I will edit this later today to add.
Mostly phone calls. A couple of texts and emails. Some games while I'm on the throne. The occasional web search.
I get maybe 12-14 hours of battery life.
PRO's:
-it's pretty looking
-a themed rosie launcher.
CON's:
-I got better battery life with Fresh 3.4.0.1 and stock kernel.
-Doesn't offer the original HTC #11 kernel like Fresh does. Anyone have a link to it?
I would recommend this setup to anyone that wants a good looking rom that has lots of customization options. I use it mostly because of the look of it. But, it is quick, scores well on quadrant, and gets decent battery life... It is not the best I have found... but it will get you through most of a day on moderate usage.
---
Can someone tell me... does the battery life depend on how the kernel plays with the ROM? I could get about 20-24 hours of battery life on Fresh with kernel #11. Now that I'm on Myn's and I could find the #11 kernel again, would I get the same battery life?
Good point. One of my biggest goals is to help people who wish to flash a custom kernel find the right one that is friendly with the Rom and most importantly the hardware version. Imo a rather a kernel is going to work with a phone or not has to do a lot with the hardware.

Hi
During the past few days I've noticed that my HD2 has been getting quite hot while running Android, and the battery life has also been very poor (lasting around 6 hours)
I've tried multiple SD 'versions' of Android (this could be due to this)
Has anyone else had this problem before? If so how did you fix it?
Cheers once again
Francis.
I've used NAND Android since I've got the phone (one year ago).
Heating was an issue only while I ran some graphic intensive 3D games or while I had gps and wifi on while browsing or navigating.
Since I like to keep my kernel up to date, I've seen that newer kernels seem to have longer battery life and the heating is less pronounced.
So my advice to you is switch to nand as gingerbread roms aren't having any more bugs and make sure you have a newer kernel.
I recommend if you use:
- sense: marc kernel
- miui: tytung
- cyanogen or aosp: dorimanx or tytung

I opening this thread especially for discuss AOKP nightlies, not for Milestone. I did not find separated thread here in XDA for nightly versions of AOKP. I think AOKP deserves a thread here.
To keep clean the AOKP Milestone thread, I suggest to post here any aokp nightly related issue/question.
If you want to post here, please do not forget to report which nightly version you are using currently. In this way I guess we can help each others more efficiently.
Latest nightlies can be found on AOKP website.
About battery time
We was discussed about battery times about nightlies on AOKP Milestone thread. I guess we can continue here as first discuss.
Please send your statistic and your opinion also about your battery time with your current nightly.
AOKP 2013-06-15
Drains the battery under Process "Android OS" about 2-3% / hour that I think too much in idle.
Even if I use my phone, (I mean screen is on) Process: "Android OS" always eats more battery than screen.. I guess its not normal.
AOKP Milestone 1
2% / 8hours in idle - My best results so far..
You can post here your results, please don't forget to tell your version, because its important.

obviously milestone version will be better than nightlies.
i plan to flash back milestone one. since i dont use the new things in the nightlies.
the only think i notice to be different is the auto brightness customization and the ribbon.
the android OS drain is too high.

I created this thread directly beside the AOKP milestone that actually here. I see in this section many another roms also. Why is AOKP not a custom rom? Sorry I don't realy understand. If AOKP Milestone is here, why not right this section for the AOKP nightlies?
If i started this thread in a bad section, I'd like to ask some administrator to move this thread to the right place if possible.
Sorry/thanks

Hi Guys
Strange things just happened.
Im still on nightly with my phone. i have some battery drain by android OS.
BUT
on my nexus the milestone version runs. Its already works good more than a month. Yesterday i noticed the same thing. Android OS drains the battery, more than the screen itself.
I started to find applications that can drain the battery through android os.
No luck. Im sure its not any installed application from playstore.
It must be the Google Apps itselt that the same on my both device.. Between gapps im sure 'currents' is a big battery killer. first i uninstalled and got better result, but still androis os drains the batteries on my both device.. Im pretty sure they are updating themselves without any question. so this battety drain not comes with aokp nightlies, but google apps. and that more frightening: together android os battery drain i noticed mediaserver also works even if i dont watch any video and my phone is muted.... what if google spying on us??? very strange.. I'll try to use my tablet without any connection, just for a test...
Android OS secrvice alway was around 2-5% from a full battery.. even if the device is idle!!!
do you guys experiencing the same behaviour by android os??

This threads offends me. I have taken time to create an aosp roms dicussion thread for discussing all aosp roms, yet you fail to utilize the search function to see if previous thread already exist and open a thread like this. I also posted a link to my thread post #7 which you disregarded. Here it is again:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2176223
Mods, please leave this thread here. We need a place to discuss the nightlies.

My grand grandfather was an astronaut!
Good news!
I did find the problems!
its about google apps....
i uninstalled google currents
and disabld everything in the location settings.
now my battery drain stopped!
in the last 6 hours of idle, drained only 1%!
it seems much better now.
Im still on 06-15 niggtly.
Same thing solved my problem on nexus 7.
So I guess this battery drain not come from any aokp build! If you want, you can install back the latest nightly (imo same stable like milestone was, however i dont use the built in lock screen and i saw peoples having problem with it.).
good luck!

Hi, I have high android OS usage even though I clean install the milestone one.
Like u said, the android OS usage is always Slightly higher than screen usage.
Better batter stats doesn't show any partial or kernel wake lock.
I suspect it may be the auto brightness.
I have mine completely customized to my own values.
Maybe it's causing the phone to constant check the light sensor.
I have disable the auto brightness and will check how it behaves.
hi
on my device auto brightness fully disabled i using constant 1% brightness because i alwasys inside... I think you dont need to affraid because of that.
i guess its google apps
go to application and check google services thats already updated. you can delete update.. so i think google services can change in the background.
i also started use better battery stats. i'll let you know if i have some news.

Recently came over from CM, needed more customization. AOKP has been great, but has a couple of weird bugs on my device. Most notably, occasionally the multitasking pane has no quit all button. However, all I have to do is leave and immediately reopen the multitasking. Doesn't affect much, but still a minor annoyance. Still, having a blast playing around with all the customization, I feel like I'm just scratching the surface.

I had the opposite experience. I tried cyanogen mod yesterday.
And was underwhelmed by the lack of things in cm. it lose to aokp in so many ways.
But there are 2 things cm does better than aokp, the torch toggle that leaves a notification in the status bar to be turn off.
And remap volume button to control media volume instead of ringer volume.
The multitasking plane has a kill all button if you enable it in rom settings under general.
I do not face bug where it randomly disappear. If issue persist, you could try reinstall rom.
Fast summary about battery drain problem
After I did try different variations of roms and modem versions (basebands), I must say that: nothing is draining the battery because of AOKP, just looks like...
I feel my battery keeps a little longer with XXELLA baseband than XXEMC2.
In my opinion it's just a bad battery statistics that misleading us.. Somehow in the battery log "Android Os" almost always comming up to the first place, even if that is impossible and not logical.
Just for an example:
Charge up your phone to 100%, then do not switch off your phone.
Switch off everything that can eat extra battery (bluetooth, wifi, mobile data, nfc, gps)
Try to watch movie from your sd card or do anything to drain your battery to approx. 80%.
You will see in the battery log: Screen or/and media is the biggest consumer of the battery.
Leave your phone in idle for 6-8 hours long, then check again the battery log.
Probably your battery losts another 1-2%, but Android OS will be the bigger consumer again, thats logically not possible...
If the battery lost 20% because of the screen, and another 1-2% because of idle: Android OS can not come above the screen time with total 1-2% of consumption.. So its false, we dont need to talking about. Its a battery log bug. I guess the very high numbers of kernel wakelocks mislead the calculations of the battery stat. I also noticed that my screen time changed to less. Certain parts of the battery log was missing or/and incorrect: I did not see screen in the list two times, and once I did see bluetooth as bigger consumer (wih 68 hours!!!) even if i did not use any bluetooth connection. I did try battery calibration - not helps.
Any Nightly version of AKOP don't eats more battery than Milestone!!!
6-16 Nightly is stable on my device, no random restarts or any malfunction, superuser works better, camera bug also fixed
Only thing that I noticed as difference is between basebands:
On my device XXELLA eats less battery [0,25%/hour] in idle, than XXEMC2 [up to ~1,25%/hour - variable sometimes less]
I living in the European Union, so I can't suggest to everyone to use the mentioned version of baseband, But if you notice more battery consumption in idle, good idea to try another (maybe older) baseband version that suggested in your area.
Headphone Volume/Distortion fix
If someone is noticed that: AOKP's headphone output much louder(and distorted) than Originally SGS3 with stock rom, Here is a quckfix:
Use any root explorer (I did use AntTek Explorer - works good and free), make sure it has root privileges.
Go to: System>etc >sound where is a file located, m0
Open the file for edit
Search the section that starts <device name="headphone">
In this section you will see another two row:
<ctl name="Left Output Mixer DAC Volume" val="7"/>
<ctl name="Right Output Mixer DAC Volume" val="7"/>
Set the values from 7 to 4
Save the file
Restart your phone
For me personally not necessary to pumping out my brain with headphones, so I rather need quality sound than high volume. I always using Poweramp and after the change I noticed: I can boost more bass and treble without distorting the sound...
Overally I'm not satisfied with the sound quality of s3 (my old galaxy nexus was much better imo), but with this settings, sounds much better for my ears... If someone is more audiofil, just like me: I suggest to try this settings.
