Hi Guys,
I was wondering why Android on HD2 eat up so much battery. Earlier I was thinking, that android is running of SD card...so its the case. However this is not true as in Android HD2 NAND thread its been mentioned many times...that battery won't increase significantly even after NAND install of Android, so where lies the problem...is it because power management drivers on hd2 android not good enough...just curious?
Regards
There must be a problem with your android build or you are not properly managing your battery life. To enjoy good battery life you need to disable radios via power control, and keep screen brightness low.
Current widget tells me that in standby my hd2 uses 3-7 mA. This draw is fine when compared to similar android devices.
Please provide some details on your build and your reading from current widget.
I think he was asking about how much the HD2 life in android is shorter when compared to WM6.X
If this is the case, this has much to do IMHO about how Android works in its innards.
The Android OS has a way of controlling the apps installed in it, to know which apps do which kind of stuff. Like, when a new app is installed it has a file that tells the OS all features it does, and which of those features can be called by other programs (an example is the gallery 3d, that can be used to open pictures of certain types, every time a file that it can open is accessed android asks [if you have more than one type of gallery] which app you want to use to open the picture).
With this kind of control being done by the system in real time in a way totally different from windows (register??) the OS probably need more awake time and probably use more battery.
With the same amount of time spent using similar stuff in windows mobile and android, WM really rulez in terms of Battery Life. BUT I really prefer the new life Android is giving me in HD2. I'm really happy again, feeling like I have a brand new toy again.
P.S: I'm oversimplifying the way this works, without even mentioning the services, widget services, and several other stuff that are running in the background all the time.
i get about the same battery life in winmo n androud. make sure u have a good radio n compatible rom.

People always say those things...
Well, let me just say that I'm using one of the best combos out there, and yes I have tested almost all combos you can imagine by my self in my own phone, so I wouldn't rely on someone else's idea of a perfect combo.
Tested more than 10 roms (the list is long so, I wont bother saying all of them, but the most used ones are there, Chucky, Miri's, VBNrom, Dutty's, and several others.
About radio... 2.10, 2.11, 2.12 and now 2.14 I have used all of them too and combined them with each rom...
Right now the best combo FOR MY PHONE and in my opinion is VBN 3.14 and radio 2.14
Multi boot, autoboot android 6sec.
I really think that what is most important is the build, with the same builds, almost all WM roms made for android, and Miri, have the same effect for me, the radios I must say that 2.12 and 2.14 are the best, and 2.14 has better reception in my country, for me.
So, as I have said, FOR ME, the best combo is resumed to VBN 3.14, radio 2.14 and any android build, right now using Desire HD 3.1 from Mdeejay with several different kernells (still testing them)
The kernels and the build are the MOST important thing after you find a good combo.
With the best build/combo and a good WM rom, doing similar things (surfing the net for the same amount of time, phone in sleep mode for the same amount of time, same time talking and etc. the best battery life is surely for WM 6.X hands down.
BUT if you are really getting the same Bat life, you are a lucky guy keep the settings you have, because I must say that I have constantly near me 5 HD2 (from friends), all of them with android now, and every single guy says that the bat life is nowhere near WM 6.x
I could go a full day in WM6.5.3 and have 50-40% remaining in the end of a day with heavy usage. Android, with moderate to heavy use, I'm happy if I can reach the end of the day, and even happier with some bat left
Greetings, Santroph.
I agree battery life is not comparable to WM6.x. People who claim they get the same battery life most likely have a buggered up WM6.x setup or they don't know how to manage power/settings.
Which App are you using to monitor power consumption?
Currently I use PowerTutor.
One time I wondered how 30% of power were lost over night?!
So battery lasts maximum one day until it's empty.
On WM 6.5 it lasts for about 2 days, like santroph already said, too.
A friend of me told me, his HTC Desire has about 80% in the evening. Do they have a better battery?
In usage I have about 540-600mW
He has got 550-650mW
So seems the same power consumption.
Regards

I actually get around the same amount of battery life as well. Just running the stock Froyostone 2.1 without tweaks (don't even know how to do tweaks if my life depended on it). Current Widget shows 0mA when waken up from screen off and hovers at 3-4mA with screen on and idle. Battery drop 1-2% per hour over night.

I have TMO US HD2 and I'm using NRGZ 21916 18Sep ROM with 2.14 radio. For android I'm using pongster's HyperDroidSense V1.1. I'm using only 2 widgets HTC Analog clock and Weather channel. I have set the screen brightness on automatic and to tell u its quite dull, not at all bright. I've also disabled all Background sync's and no WiFi or bluetooth is enabled...
I do like to fiddle with my phone every now and then...but its not heavy use, I would say its moderate.
Battery life i'm getting is by the end of day, the battery is drained and have to recharge.
Before this android ROM i tried warrenb213 CM6 9/6V1.5a which is claimed by some user's to give best battery life on TMO HD2. Its stock android rom with CyanogenMod...battery life was little better, but it was slow and it didn't had instant wakeup...it took 2-3 seconds after pressing the button to wake...and personally I prefer HTC Sense UI to stock...
On WinMo my phone easily last 2 days with some battery % (about 20-30) left and can easily give me third day too with light use on 3rd day. And by no means i'm using a minimalist WinMo setup...I have CHT v1.8.5 and the same analog clock with seconds hand enabled.
So battery life on Android << that on Winmo. About the argument that Android uses more battery due to how its build. I don't think its the reason, because HTC's other phone like Desire or Desire HD have the same 1230mAh battery and have similar specs...but there battery life is similar what HD2 gives on WinMo.
Also, you must bear in mind that comparing the HD2 to the desire with battery life, the desire is obviously going to win. The desire has been made by HTC to run Android, unlike the HD2. The desire does have a slightly larger battery (i think) but the desire has been optimized by HTC so that it uses the least amount of battery possible I.e when in standby etc.
I don't know all the specifics but this is what I've found out
Hope this helps

^^ya, i do understand...but to me its happening like battery life on hd2 w/ android is like 15 hours from 7am in morning to 10pm in night....WinMo give easily gives like 50-60hours depending on use...desire has similar as i've heard...
Agreed not optimized, but I expect it to give 40hours with full charge?
It is not optimized I guess? I get 6-7 hrs on winmo but 5-6 on android.
We can't compare with Desire, even if the hardware are really similar when looking at CPU/GPU, RAM, radio and stuff like that, we have e HUGE NORMAL LCD screen, that really takes way much more battery than Desire's Smaller Amoled screen.
Recent tests have shown that the new desire with Super LCD (thats way better than ours) do waste more energy than the AMOLED one (despite what HTC has to say about it).
I think that we should compare it with our own phones with WM, and probably with the new Desire HD or Evo 4, which have the same Case/Screen and very similar hardware too (despite Evo beeing CDMA).
IMHO...
P.S: People say that the SD card doesn't have anything to do with the battery drain, and that nand should be the same. Well I can say that this IS and IS NOT true... It all depends on which card are you using. I have 4 MicroSD cards, and they all have different behavior with the same combo/build/kernel/battery, even when in sleep mode with everything else (connections and all) disabled.
I have used WatchDog to see if any program was strangely making this happen, and I didn't find anything at all different when the Hungry SDcard was using that much battery, it was all it's fault.
2GB class 4 -> 5-7ma stable
16gb class 2 -> 3-7ma stable
8gb class 2 -> 5-9ma stable
8gb class 6 -> 5-80ma not stable (can be ina 5-7ma for hours and suddenly be in more than one hour in 40-80ma)
I prefer to use the 16gb class 2 for more battery, since the performance is not that better with the class 6 in android.
I've tested this a lot, and retested.
Greetings, Santroph.
I think that the HD2 battery is shortened by the display (Samsung Vibrant is awesomer in that respect) as well as the processor. If I throttle the processor down to 384mhz and keep the screen at 33% (automatic backlit) then I can get pretty decent battery life from 15-24 hours?
Been trying alot of builds recently trying to get reliable gps (+ compass) and decent battery life. I really like MDJ's desire HD build nice gps + nav and best of all loving the new sense interface. But as with a few other builds i have tried recently battery drainage has gone through the roof.
To compare to darkstones desire hd build i get 3-8 mA in standby and i can get around 18-22 hours out of the phone. But most of the recent builds i am only managing 8-10 hours max.
I have tried shubcraft 2.0, the latest hyperdroid, the latest MDJ evo and of course MDJ's latest desire hd. All of which have increased significantly in battery drainage. But when i switch back to an older build battery drainage falls in line again.
Is there something i can do to sort it out? As i see a lot of people report decent battery life whereas my observations are totally the opposite.

looked but can only find everything ive been doing ever since android was first developed for hd2. using winmo battery tweaks, setcpu, turning off all unnecessary wireless (wifi, data, syncs) using a android loader + making sure keypad lights are on. only thing new i found was your post about reconditioning the battery to let it know when it is actually full. none of that addresses the 100+ mA i get in standby and neither does reconditioning the battery.
I'm using Mdeejay rEVOlution 2.3 ROM. 'Android System' is using 58% of my battery, Chucky lite ROM with most of the WM settings off, and Hastarin Kernel (can't remember which number). Is this right?
No, usually Display takes most of the battery. Might be a bad build or something, you might want to format your SD card and load a new version of android on it.

Cheers for the reply! I guess I'll crack on with it. Good job it's a Sunday, hey?
i have installed android for the first time yesterday. this is all new to me (flashing roms and stuff) but it all went ok. i have though noticed that battery life is poor. Firstly, i have searched the forum and noted that many users are stating what the battery usage is in mA. how exactly is this measured? is there an app? secondly, it appears the battery can be effected by what rom, radio etc is installed. if i was to try a different rom or radio, would i have to install android again along with all my apps?
thanks
i kind of have this problem too but it hink thats just how these early builds are.
Use currentwidget to measure mA.
My mA idle get down t 5mA, but I am still having some issues getting battery life that i think is acceptable

thanks for that. just tried the widget. lowest i get is 7mA
5 to 9 mA is great battery consumption at idle, I'm having an issue staying there, I bottom out one day at 3mA but then today my phone doesn't drop below 50mA at idle. Windows Rom and radios are important for it to run smoothly but I don't think a lite rom makes a difference over a full rom, when haret launches , is gonna keep anything from running on windows(so I hear) I've tried many many roms, and the vbn rom, which is a super lite rom, didn't perform better than what I'm using right now which is energy cht. Radio will keep you from having issues with the phone waking up,(bsod) I've tried a bunch of radios and settled with the 2.15, a lot of people swear by it!
Hi all,
Just wondering if your all seeing reduced battery life with the ICS builds for the DesireZ?
I was using Miui (2.x) and now trying out Ice Cream JIBWich, and Im discovering the battery life is most certainly less. I've also tried CM9 Alpha and Andromedus r13, all roughly the same.
Battery Widget reports on average 40(ish)mA in sleep, I havent compared it to Miui but just wondering I've done something wrong here..
Install procedure this time was a factory wipe.
Comments?

I don't know if my battery life is worse on ICS than on CM or stock 2.3. Because I don't have any logs of battery life. Maybe I will do some tests in next week, just for curious.
So... I'm getting 30mA - 34mA drain on idle on Andromadus v13 with default kernel. It is lower than yours. I'm using latest radio now (.19).
After implementing new features and fixing bugs, there is a stage of development called optimization. That is when you will see all the battery life milked out of a rom.
And none of the ICS roms are even close to that stage, so battery will probably not be indicative of the final product.
I don't have any hard numbers, but based on my moderate usage, (8am to 11pm) I go from 100% to about 40%. Fairly good IMO when compared to sense roms (that i'm used to) but not as good when compared to AOSP GB or MIUI roms..
Hmm I found my battery doing suprisingly well compared to aosp gb, now that I'm using ics its lasting longer than ever.
It probably has to do with better app/process management.
That's my experience..

Well, this might sound strange to say but i'm actually getting the best battery life i've ever had out of ICS so far with Andromadus v13/Jibwich 1.3 on my phone. I seem to manage to get really long charges of at least 48 hours. Maybe i'm not using my phone as much as i was with GB? I'm not quite sure if that's the case or not, but i'm consistently getting longer lasting charges than ever before with GB.
Thing is though that ICS ROMs DO seem to drain the battery more while the phone is actively being used (in comparison to AOSP GB ROMs), this seems to be the case for me, as well as some other people that i've seen.
There were a few strange versions of Andromadus and Jibwich though which seemed to cause severe battery drain for me. Fortunately, that hasn't been the case with any of the latest versions.
All of that said, i still don't think anything compares to the battery life on G2 Slim (Gingerbread AOSP ROM), that ROM has ridiculously good battery life. With that one, i'd use my phone a fair bit (couple hours of tethering, gaming, lots of texting and calls) and it would still last for at least 44 hours or so.
In the end though, there are still some GB ROMs that have much worse battery life than ICS for me. For example, all CM7 variants that i've tried has always had this frustrating radio related battery drain, then some Sense ROMs seem to drain the battery a bit more than AOSP ROMs too. In response to the OP, i never really got amazing battery life with MIUI, so ICS has been a much better experience so far in that regard.
What i do know for sure though is that battery life with ICS is MUCH better than the stock gingerbread OTA update that our phones got.
thanks all,
I've done some checking and according to battery monitor, my JIBWIch rom seams to be fluctuating .. from 36mA to 97mA in standby which to be indicates something's running.. not sure what... Anyone recommend a decent process monitor, there's soo many of them

Agreed..
I'll see how it goes but I might have to go back to Miui (GB) as I use the phone for work..

Here was my (personal) record breaking charge on Andromadus v13 https://www.dropbox.com/gallery/12263406/1/screenies?h=c9ef42
You can see part of my configuration there (radio and CPU speeds).
On top of what's already there, i use supercharger RC6.9 with option 6 and nitro-lag-nullifier.
here are my usage patterns for good battery life:
-I generally stick to 2g networks as i don't do much web browsing while i'm out but when i do, i just switch to 3g.
-I also don't regularly use any task killers but if i detect any choppyness i kill app using Advanced Task Killer.
-I don't use auto-brightness and instead i just use the notification power widget.
-I do lots and lots of texting, some calls here and there, i often use wifi hotspot and i play 2d games a little bit at times, so i'm generally a light-moderate user.
-I also "debloat" as much as possible by getting rid of any system apps that i don't use.
On a random note, right now, i'm using Jibwich 1.3 and it is so great, battery life seems the same as andromadus v13 but this ROM is actually much more smooth and fluid on the home screen.
I hope this helps a bit, give me a thanks if you found this useful ;D
hey thanks for this, yeah very nice!
Just occured to me, im currently in Madrid (Roaming), and the phone's on 2g at the moment, I WONDER.. just wonder, if its constantly hunting for 3G signal.. now that would account for the random power demands...
Meanwhilst I found this app http://androidadvices.com/save-battery-android-phone-enabling-2g-network/
Apart from adding a 2g/3g toggle it also makes the phone go to 2g when sleeping.. I mean when its sleeping we dont need 3g access....
Anyone else tried it? or can recommend a different better/app?

Go to settings --> wireless and networks --> mobile networks
Now see if you have "use only 2g networks" checked. If you do, that'd be why you're always connecting to 2g networks.
As a battery saving tip, it's best to always check that option when you don't need mobile data (like when you're at home and wifi is available).
In addition to that, if that option is NOT checked, then your phone will connect to 3g networks where applicable, you have to check if your carrier actually uses 3g networks on your plan.
Also that app seems fine, but i wouldn't use the "use 2g when sleep" option because that could cause problems with reception between waking and sleeping because it'll be erratically switching between basebands all the time.

It looks to me that yes. Tried 3 ICS inluding JIBWich and CM9 based and battery life was reduced to me about 1/3 maybe 1/4. looks like that. Hope some improovment will come in near future.
I'm running Andromadus v13 and it seems to be only a bit worse than the latest CM7 nightly. However, this is only my subjective opinion, it could be that I'm using my phone more with ICS
I also have the .19 radio and the tweaks associated with v13.
Well from what i've seen, ICS has very steep and sudden drops in the battery stats graph when the phone is being used. This is in contrast to many gingberbread ROMs which just have a sloping negative curve on the battery stats graph. This seems to indicate that ICS uses more battery when the phone is being actively used.
I'll post pics after this current charge is over to show a comparison of ICS battery life with Andro v13 and GB battery with Virtuous G-lite 2.0.1.
I don't see any difference between GB and the ICS battery usage, maybe because i allways configure it from begining and don't restore apps via titanium backup or any other app...
Also battery needs to calibrate under new ROM and after few charges you will see it working little bit longer and longer...
ps. Do you have disabled Google Talk on ICS fresh install? He is always on after installing and eats a lot of battery.

I also configure all new rom's from begining and on Affinity 2 - my battery in averange usage die after ~16h but on ISC os about ~13h, I don't know why.
My battery after full charge get 4.212 V , tried clear battery stats bin no effect
My avg runtime on one charge on CM7 w/o oc, with ilwt or pershoot kernel is 60hours (yes! 3 "work days") or atleast 2 days with 50-70 min calls and 25-35 SMS
Turning data and/or wifi when needed makes phone battery least looooonger...
Now testing Andromadus Audacity b1, charged 7.5h ago (4207mV), i will post when empty (or near ~3600-3650)
Also remember that we don't have the proper kernel source for our phone. There are some tweaks that can't really be made yet, and probably a bunch of wasted cpu time where errors and stuff get worked through.
GB battery life was worse than Froyo at the same stage of development. It'll even out better when we have the official kernel source for the DHD, I think.
Sent from my HTC Desire Z using XDA
So most ICS based roms have roughly the same battery life?
I'm current on the audacity beta, getting about 20 hours with no charge with moderate use. Gingerbread i could go about a day and acouple more hours.
I'm a bit bitter that I can only use 3G or higher on Bell with my DZ...that means if I want better battery life I need to ditch mobile data altogether. Boo.

Better battery life
All,
I was just about to install "Elitemod", which claims to be tuned to bits wrt battery life, and I noticed AudicityBeta1 was released.. so i thought Id try it out.. and
And yes I think its much better!.. this morning I used it a bit, made a dozen phonecalls, sync'd email and for the first time the "voicecalls" are less than the screen.
(see attachment)
Im wondering if the recently released qualcomm drivers made a difference..
At this rate it will last ~40hrs... probably less but as long as it lasts the day Im happy
Anyone else want to confirm my findings?
Hello,
I got my HD2 for about 2 weeks now and I tried almost al available roms (SD) and I really don't have any idea which one has the best overall performance. I know there are a lot of topics like this one and I also already searched trough the forum but all these topics are outdated. These are the ROMS I tried the most and for the longest time:
Nexus HD2 2.3.7 GingerBread (battery died in 4 hours)
DL Desire 4.31 (laggy and most of time not working)
FroyoStone Sense (less ram memory available, Sense is slow)
MCCM HD V6 (really drains battery)
IceCreamTostiDroid v10.0 (good rom but some games and apps are not compatible)
IceCreamTostiDroid v11.0 (same as ICTD 10.0)
RAFDROiD 4.2 (overall performance not so good, only 1200 Quadrant Benchm)
I would really appreciate a good advice. It's for daily use. And I don't really like big roms with all kinda themes...

If you want just SD build, then i would go with hyperdroid. Either CM7 or Gingerbread, battery life is phenomenal. Also, kernel builds will change your battery consumption too. So it may not always be your ROM. Also, there are things running in the background that you may not use, (for me it was google talk, maps, and LatinIME) i used startup manager to keep them from running at startup.
I can't really give you a specific ROM, but I can give you some advice.
First, if you really care about performance and speed, steer away from Sense.
I'd recommend MIUI for battery life, my phone used to last 3-4 days easily (a few phone calls and sms each day, network ON)
Cyanogenmod should be an option as well, it is fast and has a fair battery consumption rate.
However, the major factor is your usage of wireless networking/apps.
e.g. ,, Using 3G network will drink your battery far more than using 2G.
Keeping Bluetooth/WiFi on while not using them will also drain your battery.
Installing apps that require/keep background processes will drain your battery.
After all, it is up to you choosing a ROM.
HyperDroid is a good choice, Cm7 based, fast, dark-eye-candy, and low battery consumption
