Hello,
The wifi status icon doesn't show the signal strength. Is that your case?
Regards
Edit1: Seems it concerns WPA-Personal wifi networks if anyone sees that bug with a different encryption please post

Mines shows as 1 white bar and the rest grey regardless where I am with the phone. I could be next to the router.

Mine changes with strength as I move around. Sometimes full, sometimes just the circle and and in between too.
Mine changes - sometimes one bar, or two, most of the time none. Interestingly, it shows low signal strength even if next to the router, but the WiFi page shows strength as excellent.
Mine updates based on position.
Same here.. mine simply show the white dot at the bottom of the WIFI indicator but none of the lines have ever shown up...

I am having the same problem. I can only see the white dot, with dark grey arcs above. Every time I turn on WiFi, I have the idea that my WiFi reception is bad so I feel compelled to turn WiFi off again. I hope someone can find a way to fix this without doing a hard reset.
Odd, mines has always just been the white circle and grey arcs. I didn't even think that the arcs should go white relative to signal strength....
Now I want them to!
same problem. I found that on some wireless networks (my home) I see only the white circle with grey bars, and on other wireless networks (coffee shops etc.) I get the signal strength on the status bar icon.
Kind of weird. When i'm at home I'm always compelled to go into wireless settings and check the signal strength and it's always excellent even though the status bar icon shows that the signal strength is poor.
I wonder if it's anything to do with the security settings? At home mine is WPA2. Coffee shops will usually be open networks.
Just a thought....

Actually that's an interesting thought. I use WEP (yeah I know it sucks) security on my network.
Now that you mention it, I'm almost sure that I see the signal strength on open networks.
This could be the problem. I don't really see any logic behind this, most likely a bug.
I'll check the next time I go out to a coffee shop.

That's ditto for me. It doesn't matter where I am, I get one bar and the rest greyed out.

On WPA2 w/ AES here and the signal strength is showing OK for me, so I'm not sure about that.
Yeh I disabled security on mine, still only the white dot in the centre. Weird.
Can those of you who have the signal strength showing post details of your software version and build number? Have you installed other WiFi apps like Gmon or WiFi analyser?
Lets see:
Firmware version: 1.5
Baseband Version: 63.18.55.06U_6.35.04.25
Kernel version: 2.6.27-a5504199 [email protected] #521
Build number: 1.76.405.6 146733 CL#47214 release-keys
Software version: 1.0.0.A6288
As for apps, I have WifiScanner installed. But I think signal strength was working fine before I installed that.

Same here. Why the hell would the icon behaviour be different?? I think I may now become obsessed with figuring this out
My home network uses WPA-Personal security, so I don't have the idea that it's related to that. Tomorrow, I have the opportunity to test WPA2-Enterprise at my university so I will report my results afterwards.
My home network is WPA-2 and I don't get the display, as I said. This is mighty odd.
WPA-Personal > only the first dot is white. Even if signal is excellent.

Hi guys, I'm hoping one of you knowledgeable people might be able to help please, I've done a bit of seraching/googling but not really got anywhere...
I've noticed over the last few days that my TD2 keeps losing reception in places where I normally have a very good signal - e.g. the handset will be sat on my desk at work for a while, and when I pick it up to use it to make a call, send a text etc I notice that the network icon on the taskbar at the top is showing an exclamation mark to indicate there is no signal. I have to power off the handset and turn it back on to clear this problem (I've tried going to the comm manager and disabling/enabling 'phone' but when I disable it I cannot re-enable it afterwards).
I was wondering if this is a problem with my handset or the network (T-Mobile UK)?
Anyone got any ideas please?
Device information in case it's needed:
ROM Version: 1.39.405.2 (47382) WWE
ROM Date: 04/07/09
Radio Version: 3.43.25.19
Protocol Version: 61.20t.25.10U
I had the same problem in areas where the 3G signal is weak. I disabled 3G and everything is OK. I also noticed a dramatic increase in battery life.

I get this every 2-3 weeks (known strong signal area, no reception at all indicated), it could a bug in the Radio ROM, perhaps? Updating the Radio ROM might help. But this...

..doesn't sound right. I do this and it clears the problem without restarting the phone.
@ kskar - Sometimes I'm in a good 3G area when this happens (Manchester city centre, UK) and sometimes I'm not (at home), so I don't think this would be causing it.
@ Pete_S - I was wondering if it could be anything to do with the Radio ROM... I also tried turning airplane mode on/off in comm manager, but it usually won't come out of airplane mode either without powering off & back on.
You could also try constraining the phone to operate only in the UK bands (phone settings - Band - GSM(900+1800) + UMTS(900+2100)) and, if you only use 3G, set network type to "WCDMA".
Hello Optimus 7 owners,
My Optimus 7 already went in warrancy repair for the infamous "reboot issue" and now the problem is gone but... it seems that data connection is absolutely unstable. I wanted to understand if I'm the only one with this problem or if it's a common one.
The data connection constantly switch from max power H to one bar of G, then 3 bar of 3G, then one bar of H and so on without a rule and many times switching even to the "no signal" icon, then resuming in one second. (if it's unclear I can make a video and post it to youtube)
I'm on Vodafone Italy and it's not an operator signal issue because my wife phone (an old Motorola V3) don't has such strange Behavior, and my old HTC Touch HD worked as expected too!
That behaviour translate to an unstable data connection, many time I see timeouts or long wait time before data start to works in apps that use internet.
The strange thing is that if I speak with phone there seems to have no problem...
I'm alone or someone is in my same boat??? What do you think about this strange Behavior?
Here my versions:
SO version: 7.0.7392.0
Firmware version: 1.0.1.10
Hardware version: 1.0.0.0
Radio sw version: 1.0.1.10
Radio hardware version: 0.3.5.0
Bootloader version: 1.5.0.0
SOC processor version: 0.30.2.0
The phone has it's original firmware, I've never done strange things
Thank you in advance to all kind people that will answer
No one with data connection switching between 3G, H, G and no signal like me? I'm the one in the world with this problem??? I can't believe that...!
I have partly observed that behaviour on my set, I tend to have some signal issues as in always very few bars (say one or two) where others using same carrier have full connection.
Not sure if it's a firmware problem, read something about a pending fix from LG but I can't find the article anymore so it might have been bogus.
This can cause the phone to rapidly switch from 3G to E (Edge) to H at times.
It's not such a big problem for me so I guess I really don't think about it much.
/J
I'm thinking about sending my phone again to repair... :'(

This is the same for me as well - i live in a bad signal area anyway which doesnt help but the phone will go from full signal to no signal back to decent signal.
A Dell Streak on the same network has much more stable signal.
Must say it has improved slightly in Mango although not that much
Well..... I don't know if I have the same issue. I work in a large building and I know I have a weak signal inside. So most of the day it stays on G, sometimes E if I just pull it out of my pocket from behind something.
The issue I have is that when I know there is a better connection, it doesn't seem to jump on it. I either have to go into the cellular selection in settings or simply reboot it and it will find, display, and fully use H connection. Which I am more than pleased with the performance.
Trouble is, both the office and the house have weak signals so as long as it's G or 3G I'm happy. The only time I get to H is if I'm traveling around town and get to play with it.

This is my first post so I would like to greet the entire XDA community.
I'm facing the same issue (instable 3G connection). With my previous smartphone, a Sony Experia X1 with Win Mobile 6.5 + Manila ROM (thanks XDA!!), 3G connection works like a charm. I think that poor connection performance have as side effect the excessive battery drain (12-16 hr with push email disabled).

I have a similar issue. I live in spain, and it seems that the connection here is an option.
Anyways, like I said, the connection is bad, but many times, the phone switches off the data connection alone for a randoom time. then it comes again.
I used the Word switch off, because, although data connection is off, I can make and recieve calls.
This makes me obviously nervious, because I don't want to call trough phone-line, I want to call through Tango!!!! and chat through whatsapp instead of sms
Can you post system info of your LG Optimus 7?
Particularly OS version, brand and SIM operator. I wonder if it happens when brand of smartphone and SIM are different.
Thanks.

If you want mine you can read them in my signature. Previously I had TIM-IT ROM with Vodafone IT SIM and I had same problem. Today I have reflashed with Vodafone IT ROM and a Vodafone IT SIM, same problem.
I don't know what to do... I don't believe a LG service can fix the problem.... Or yes? Is anyone that sent device to service for that problem??? Please tell us your story!
This is very noticeable on mine - so much so im using a Wildfire S that holds signal perfectly well in the same place (not as good a phone though). Will try and see if locking it to 3G only will help.
Hopefully LG release a firmware update for this.
Some new considerations. Usually I work in an office with poor 3G signal strength (max 2 bars) where I have instable data connection (and voice calls too). Yesterday I worked all day long in another location with good 3G signal strength (at least 4 bars) and I haven't had any connection problem: email (Exchange and Gmail accounts), IE, Market Place etc. always available.
Now I am at my usual office and once again I have an instable data connection. No reset/restart/switch off/fw update in the last three days.
Is it possible that it is only a "bad reception" issue?
How many bars do you have when instable data connection issue occurs?

It's very difficult to tell you how much signal there is at my home (where I've recorded the youtube video) because my LG Optimus 7 is reporting a value from 0 to 5 bars.... Normally it stays at 4 of 5, if I configure not to use 3G it stays to 5 of 5 bars. In My Nokia E65 I've used to compare loading times, the signal is at 100% of the bar.
I really can't understand what's going on with my device... The main thing is that I cannot understand if it's a common device problem or only my device problem. Maybe the second? If that's the case I'll send to repair for the second time my phone (other 3 weeks without phone... ahrg!)
I've the same problems with my LG Optimus 7. My common carrier is E-Plus/base here in germany. Extreme fluctuating signal (switching between 3G, H and E in less than 2 seconds) when starting a "online-app" and it doesn't depend on the location (indoor/outdoor). The Data-Rate is poor and most times i have the "no-signal-sign" in the upper left, but the strange thing is, i can buzz so. without problems...
Looks like a poor programmed signal-display.
no signal
Yes, in fact I noticed too, in these days, that sometimes I'm stuck with "no signal" symbol even if I can ring to my phone... I've also seen the no signal symbol while communicating from internet (yes, wifi was off...) I think the LG driver is very poor, in fact the battery too has the problem that it doesn't update if you don't turn off the device.
I can accept that the signal symbol is not realistic but not that data doesn't come in/out! It's terrible.
I have the issue, I'm from Argentina and I have the same problem, indoor o outdoor it's the same. LG E900H.
I do a Factory reset yesterday and I haven´t this issue anymore. I do it for the battery life, and now I don´t have both issue. May be the unstable connection was the battery problem because the device is looking for signal everytime.
Of course I´m not sure but it´s possible. Good Luck
I have the same issue too.
Try to open MFG app and then select:
7. Engineer Menu
4. Modem settings
2. Band Settings
Select WCDMA Only (GSM only may help also) and reboot phone.
Same here
I'm with Vodafone-it and have the same issue, and even worst: sometimes I loose my connection with Wi-fi, too, at my home, while all other devices continue working.

I just bought my Iconia A500 and rooted it (of course ), but i am really disappointed in the Wifi signal strength.
I cant walk more than 50' away from my router at home or at work before I lose signal.
My DInc2, and Aria can pick up signal from the same routers at almost twice that distance.
My laptop picks that signal up at almost 10 times that distance!
I am currently running Byakhee lite 1.0 rom with the 2.6.36.3HoneyVillain-3.4+ kernel
I just bought an A500 two weeks ago and am hugely disappointed in the Wi-Fi performance.
I have a Linksys E4200 router in my home office and that provides adequate signals to the Linksys access point in the living room one floor below and about 70 feet away. I can also rest in bed surfing the web on my laptop and my Droid X, both of which receive a decent signal about 30 feet away from the router.
The A500, on the other hand, received a signal for a minute or two but lost it and never recovered it in both locations.
The laptop has dual antennas in it so I can see it having a better signal capture performance but the Droid X is tiny and doesn't have a huge length of wire in it but it works fine and the Speedtest app will show a download rate as high as my connection allows. So the signal to the two locations is definitely adequate for high speed web surfing.
The A500, on the other hand, can't receive squat. Even in my office 4 feet from the router the signal strength indicator is only on 2 or 3 bars. Only if I put the tablet right next to the router do I get a full signal strength indicated.
I saw a post where the guy said he felt the A500 was acting like the antenna was not actually connected and I've seen people post they are just fine 75 or 100 feet away and outside! So there's clearly some major variability between units. I wonder if I shouldn't just return it and try again.
Yeah, sitting 4 feet from my router with my new A500 last night had me
at 3/4 bars. Something must not be quite right.
Same problem here. I'm six feet away from the router and being told the wi-fi reception is bad.
To those of your with the radio issues, when you are not connected to the network, does it show that it has good reception until you try to connect? I used to have this problem. If the wifi isn't connected, it would show 5 bars for my router. As soon as I try to connect it would go down to 1 bar and give me issues connecting. It seemed to fix it when I forgot the network, rebooting my tablet and then add the network again. Other than that being a problem, my wifi is perfectly fine.
I would also suggest downloading "wifi analyzer" from the market. It will give you a graphical representation of the strength of the wifi networks that are near you.
I definitely have a lower signal in the same location of my house/office on the a500 when compared to my netbook or Android phone. I think most believe it to be due to the metal casing on the Acer.
Setting a static IP is what fixed the signal dropping to zero when it show strong before I connected.
I want to see some one take the back plate off and check the signal to see if it does anything. It must be the case.

Im curious to see if you all are using thenlittle wifi icon on the tablet to measure "good" signal or if yiure using an actual dbi measurement.

When I'm not connected to a network, I don't believe the Wi-Fi signal strength icon shows up. Doesn't it only show when you are already connected? I guess I could have waited until I got home to confirm before posting.... Oh well.
I will try dumping the remembered connection and adding it back but I doubt that will help. If it does, I'll be pleasantly surprised.
I also already have WiFi Analyzer as I use that on my Droid X and there's one major issue I've already noticed. On the Droid, it picks up all the signals in the neighborhood near me. There are about 8 or 10 in the area and I've used it to set my router to a channel other than what the neighbors have set. Of course I only connect to mine but I'm using what amounts to a private channel!
On the A500 though, WiFi Analyzer doesn't show ANY other signals but mine. Even if I stand at the window and hold the tablet up high. Nothing. It really is as if the A500 had no antennas inside it or they are not connected.
I don't think it's receiving much at all.

The icon is surely just a quick indicator of signal strength but it's as good an indicator as it needs to be and it corresponds to the signal data in WiFi Analyzer so it's definitely not a false indicator of what the tablet believes it's receiving. WiFi Analyzer will plot the strength in db and it's all below -90.
So I see it as providing a reasonably accurate representation of what the tablet is receiving. Couple that with no network access by any app be it Weather Bug, any of the browsers I have, or even the ads in free apps, nothing is getting through so, when the icon shows no bars, that definitely corresponds to no network.
Sure the icon is not a $2000 oscilloscope but it definitely works.
By the way, there's a thread at androidtablets.net showing a minor tear down of the A500 (search for "whats under the hood") but I can't tell where the radio antenna(s) are.

OK, I just checked. Forgetting any networks, turning radio off, rebooting, turning radio on and checking, the notification icon is dark.
Going to the Wi-Fi settings, I see my network listed but NO others. When clicking Connect, the only indication of signal strength is the dialog box stating "Fair" and I'm THREE FEET from my router. That's the only indicator of signal I see. If that's what you're talking about, OK. Otherwise, there is no other indication of signal strength before I connect.
Now I also checked my phone and it shows all the other APs in the area. The A500 only sees my router and the signal is only "fair". Clearly this unit is either defective or the A500 is flawed by design. I can use my puny Droid X all over the house but can only use the A500 in my office!
My router is a Linksys E4200 with dual radios and I'm connecting to the 2.4Ghz radio in mixed b/g/n mode.
when you clicked on wifi settings... there should be a list of available networks and their security...etc.. along with that, to the right side are the icons ( open & locks..etc)... those icons also showed the strength of the networks signal
My A500 see ALL the available networks that my phone sees... ( just 1 bar less)
in your case... your network is the only available one... nevertheless... the icon to the right of the name ( before you even connected )- will indicates the signal of the network ( 1-4 bars...etc )
Icon?
Regardless of what some "signal strength" icon claims - has the op performed speed/ping tests from multiple souces?
Oh, I see what you are saying. Those indicators are about as accurate as the main notification icon and I didn't even pay attention to it since I only saw my network anyway.
Well, in any event, the Acer tech who replied to my detailed explanation of my problem (no other networks but mine with very low signal strength and all the other devices seeing all the other networks, etc., resetting the tablet, forgetting the remembered networks, etc.) said the tablet was clearly defective and needed to be repaired since I had already gone through the standard troubleshooting process with no changes in outcome.
I suggest to anyone with poor signal strength to contact Acer to see if they want to repair the tablet. I don't like buying an item for full price only to have it fixed in the first two weeks so that's why I'm not going that route. Might as well just buy another one and see what happens.
So, I'll be bringing it back for an exchange or, if they don't want to exchange, a refund and I'll buy another one later.
Until I get another one.....

Best of luck! Probably dealing with a defective unit - been using my a500 for months on many random wifi spots and have not seen any poor reception issues.
Let us know how it works out!
I as well have great wifi signal. Not as strong as my laptop but close.
No problem for me on my A500 and A501. Using stock 3.2 rom version. Router is E2000.
Success!
Well, I was able to simply exchange the bad unit for a new one and checked them both side by side in the store and the original one was clearly receiving only the top 2 APs in the store while my phone was picking up about 12 from the entire store and mall.
I opened up the exchange unit, started it up and checked it before I left and, while it did not pick up all 12 APs, it picked up almost all of them clearly showing the original unit was indeed defective.
So, I'm a happy camper now. Works great around the house now.
I suggest to the OP to contact Acer and get a warranty replacement of their unit if they can determine it's a faulty radio.
I've had my Nexus 4 for a few weeks now and have found that there appears to be a radio fault with my device. I originally thought it was a software bug but I've since rooted the device and flashed a new radio. I then installed CM10. Sadly none of the following have fixed the problem.
The problem is somewhat temperamental and the actual problem varies however is usually something like the following:
The phone boots up and has mobile signal without any problems.
However, it will then lose signal and the phone status menu will vary but usually says something like this:
Network: Unknown
Signal: -105 dBm 4 asu
Network Type: UNKNOWN:0
Service Status: Out of Service
In this state the signal indicator shows a hollow outline however I also get a problem where the network connects to 'Hutchison 3G UK' whereas when it works it will connect to '3', all other phones display '3' too. The signal indicator is solid gray with no blue bars in this state.
Switching Airplane Mode on and off doesn't fix it. The phone requires a full reboot to get the network back.
Is this a hardware fault? I'm going to drop into 3 tomorrow and get a new SIM to see if that fixes it.
Google doesn't appear to show anyone with similar issues so I don't really know what to do now.

Flash a stock factory image and see if you have constant coverage again, if it doesn`t help and the new simcard you may have to send it in for repair. Maybe the issue is antenna related.

When you say stock image is that just a stock ROM or is it an entire package that will reflash radio + recovery etc?

You can try flashing the latest .48 stock radio in CWM and see if it helps. Link http://d-h.st/8Jx. Unless you allready have it as CM doesn`t flash a radio or bootloader.

I have exactly the same issue. Please keep this thread updated. I have flashed different combinations of soft and got best results with baseband version .27 with stock 4.2.2, but gsm connection is still dropping. It gets disconnected when untouched.
Flashed the full stock image from Google.
Still having the same problem.
Do Google take returns from handsets not bought from Google Play?

No, you have to contact the store or webshop where you bought the phone.

You are showing Sprint as your model and firmware. This is the international section and using anything in here can turn your phone into an expensive paperweight.
Moved to Sprint Q&A

Have you tried changing what channel your router is using? If you have too many riders on the same channel or their frequency are grossly over lapping can degrade their signal quality to almost nothing. Changes to one that's not in use and see if that doesn't give you a stronger signal. You can use an app like wifi analyzer to see if they are.
